The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the main religious scripture in Sikhism and perhaps the eternal Guru for Sikhs. It is a diverse and comprehensive collection of hymns and poetries authored by the Sikh Gurus and other great saints and poets belonging to wide-ranging cultural backgrounds, compiled in 1604 by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, and later expanded by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru.
The Granth Sahib Ji is a book with 1,430 pages, with text in the Gurmukhi script. It contains hymns (Shabads) of six Sikh Gurus: Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji, Guru Amardas Ji, Guru Ramdas Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. Other than that, it comprises the contribution of Hindu and Muslim saints like Kabir, Farid, Namdev, Ravidas, and so on, pointing toward that universal tune of spirituality and devotion.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
manmukh doojai bharam bhulaa-ay naa boojheh veechaaraa. ||7||
But the self-willed people are lost in doubt and duality and do not understand the righteous way of life. ||7||
ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਹੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦੀ ॥੭॥
ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
naamay hee sabh jaat pat naamay gat paa-ee.
Listening to Naam with concentration brings the feeling of honor of high lineage and it is through Naam that sublime spiritual state is attained.
ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਕੁਲ ਵਾਲੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ|
ਅਕਲਿ ਏਹ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਅਕਲਿ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
akal ayh na aakhee-ai akal gavaa-ee-ai baad.
That is not called true wisdom which is wasted in conflicts.
ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀ ਜੋ ਬਖੇੜਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਆ ਲਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਅਕਲਮੰਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੋਨੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਥਕੇ ਭੇਖ ਥਕੇ ਤਨੁ ਧੋਇ ॥
pandit monee parh parh thakay bhaykh thakay tan Dho-ay.
The pandits and sages are exhausted reading holy books and also tired are those who adorne various garbs and bathe at sacred places.
ਮੁਨੀ ਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਹਾਰ ਗਏ, ਭੇਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ,

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਸਦਾ ਤੂ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੬॥
naanak naam Dhi-aa-ay sadaa too bhav saagar jit paavahi paar. ||4||6||
O’ Nanak, always lovingly remember God’s Name, through which you will cross over the world-ocean of vices. ||4||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਹਿਂਗਾ ॥੪॥੬॥
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਡੁਬਦਾ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥
jan naanak ka-o parabh kirpaa Dhaaree bikh dubdaa kaadh la-i-aa. ||4||6||
God has bestowed mercy on devotee Nanak, and has rescued him from drowning in the world-ocean of vices. ||4||6||
ਸੇਵਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ॥੪॥੬॥
ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਕੀਟ ਕੀਟ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਪਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਖ ਜਠਰ ਕਉ ਭਰਤੇ ॥
raaj tay keet keet tay surpat kar dokh jathar ka-o bhartay.
From kings to worms and from worms to lord Indira, the king of all gods, no matter who they are, if they do sinful deeds they all go through reincarnations.
ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਤਕ, ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਤਕ (ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ) ਪਾਪ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਗਰਭ-ਜੂਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
