Sikhs consider the Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal living Guru and main holy scripture of Sikhism. The fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, put together the origin in the year 1604. It is a combination of the teachings of the Sikh Gurus as well as several saints from diverse religious and social backgrounds which reflects a message of universal brotherhood and spiritual wisdom.
“The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is characterized by the following: Its organization into 1,430 pages known as Angs, is written in Gurmukhi script, divided into 31 Ragas (musical measures) into which the hymns are classified.”
Contents: are three thousand eight hundred and four hymnals or (Shabads) containing teachings by six Sikh Gurus (Guru Nanak, Guru Arjan, Guru Tegh Bahadur), thirty other saints and poets like Kabir, Ravidas, Sheikh Farid on different subjects ranging from godliness to meditation; ethics morality as well as dispelling superstitious beliefs related to harmful social practices such as untouchability based on castes.

Raag Malaar, Fifth Guru:
ਊਤਮੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
ootam aakh na oochaa ho-ay.
By claiming oneself to be sublime, one doesn’t become exalted.
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਤਮ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਪੇ ਛਿੰਝ ਪਵਾਇ ਮਲਾਖਾੜਾ ਰਚਿਆ ॥
aapay chhinjh pavaa-ay malaakhaarhaa rachi-aa.
God Himself has created the world and set it up like an arena for wrestling matches ( for wrestling with the vices);
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਛਿੰਞ ਪਵਾ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ) (ਇਹ ਜਗਤ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਭਲਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੁਲਣ ਦਾ ਥਾਂ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਤਿਖ ਉਤਰੈ ਚੜੈ ਚਵਗਲਿ ਵੰਨੁ ॥੧॥
naanak hukam mani-ai tikh utrai charhai chavgal vann. ||1||
O’ Nanak, thirst for Maya is quenched, only by obeying God’s will, and by doing so, our love for Him increases many-fold. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਟੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਮਿਟਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਚਾਰ ਗੁਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਿਸਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਓਥੈ ਮੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥
istaree purkhai jaaN nis maylaa othai manDh kamaahee. When at night man and woman get together, they cohabit with flesh.
ਫਿਰ,ਜਦੋਂ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਨਾਨੀ ਤੇ ਮਰਦ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਦੋਂ ਭੀ (ਮਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ) ਮੰਦ (ਭਾਵ, ਭੋਗ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਇਆ ਕਰੇਹੀ ॥੨॥
jaa ka-o satgur ma-i-aa karayhee. ||2||
upon whom the true Guru bestows mercy. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ | ॥੨॥
