Raag Maaru, First Guru, First beat, Four Stanzas:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Shalok:
ਸਾਜਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨ ਕੀ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਾ ਸਦ ਧੂਰਿ ॥
saajan tayray charan kee ho-ay rahaa sad Dhoor.
O’ my Friend, my God! (bless me that) I may become humble like the dust of Your feet and remain attuned to Your immaculate Name.
ਹੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੀਆ ਪੇਖਉ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥੧॥
naanak saran tuhaaree-aa paykha-o sadaa hajoor. ||1||
O’ Nanak! I have come to Your refuge, (my humble submission is that) I may always be behold You everywhere around me. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ। (ਮੇਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ ਸੰਗ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੧॥

Shabad:
ਪਿਛਹੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਦੜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਲੇਹਿ ॥
pichhahu raatee sad-rhaa naam khasam kaa layhi.
Those whom the Master-God Himself sends a message (and inspires) in the last hours of the night, they alone (wake up) and recite His Name.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਪਿਆਰ-ਭਰਿਆ ਸੱਦਾ ਭੇਜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਖੇਮੇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸਰਾਇਚੇ ਦਿਸਨਿ ਰਥ ਪੀੜੇ ॥
khaymay chhatar saraa-ichay disan rath peerhay.
All the things of comfort such as tents, canopies, side-walls and carriages are always at their disposal.
ਤੰਬੂ, ਛੱਤਰ, ਕਨਾਤਾਂ ਰਥ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਤਿਆਰ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ॥੧॥
jinee tayraa naam Dhi-aa-i-aa tin ka-o sad milay. ||1||
O’ God! those who remember You with loving adoration, You call them to Your presence and unite them with You. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਜੂਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੱਦ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥
ਬਾਬਾ ਮੈ ਕਰਮਹੀਣ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥
baabaa mai karamheen koorhi-aar.
O’ reverend God! I, the unfortunate one, remained involved in worldly things,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੰਦ-ਭਾਗੀ (ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ), ਮੈਂ ਕੂੜੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਣਜ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਧਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam na paa-i-aa tayraa anDhaa bharam bhoolaa man mayraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and did not receive Your Name because my spiritually ignorant mind remained lost in the illusion of the worldly riches and power. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿਉਂਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਦ ਕੀਤੇ ਦੁਖ ਪਰਫੁੜੇ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਮਾਇ ॥
saad keetay dukh parfurhay poorab likhay maa-ay.
O’ my mother! as per my pre-ordained destiny, I remained indulged in the false worldly pleasures and my sufferings kept increasing.
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮੈਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਧਦੇ ਗਏ।
ਸੁਖ ਥੋੜੇ ਦੁਖ ਅਗਲੇ ਦੂਖੇ ਦੂਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥
sukh thorhay dukh aglay dookhay dookh vihaa-ay. ||2||
Now my joys are few but sufferings are many, and my life is going through utter agony. ||2||
ਸੁਖ ਤਾਂ ਥੋੜੇ ਹੀ ਮਾਣੇ, ਪਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉਗਮ ਪਏ, ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੁ ॥
vichhurhi-aa kaa ki-aa veechhurhai mili-aa kaa ki-aa mayl.
What other separation could be worse for those who are separated from God? Those who are united with God, what other better union can be there for them?
ਜੋ ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਬੁਰਾ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਵਾਪਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਜੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲਈ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਬਾਕੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਖੇਲੁ ॥੩॥
saahib so salaahee-ai jin kar daykhi-aa khayl. ||3||
We should praise God, who created this worldly play and is taking care of it. ||3||
ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਮੇਲਾਵੜਾ ਇਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥
sanjogee maylaavarhaa in tan keetay bhog.
We received human life because of pre-ordained destiny, but we remained busy enjoying the false worldly pleasure,
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕਰਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੰਜੋਗਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿਲਇਆ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਰਹੇ।
ਵਿਜੋਗੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੀ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥੪॥੧॥
vijogee mil vichhurhay naanak bhee sanjog. ||4||1||
because of which we lost the chance of uniting with God; but O’ Nanak! there still is hope that God may bless another opportunity of union with Him. ||4||1||
ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜਨਮ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੜੇ ਰਹੇ; ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੇ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਉਮੈਦ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਫੇਰ ਭੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Maaru, First Guru:
ਮਿਲਿ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
mil maat pitaa pind kamaa-i-aa.
(O’ brother! that Creator-God, according to whose will), your father and mother got together to create your body,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਤੇਰੇ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ,
ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
tin kartai laykh likhaa-i-aa.
the same Creator inscribed your destiny.
ਉਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ (ਤੇਰੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਇਹ) ਲੇਖ (ਭੀ) ਲਿਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਲਿਖੁ ਦਾਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
likh daat jot vadi-aa-ee.
According to this writ, you were supposed to remember the gifts of God and sing His praises,
ਕਿ ਤੂੰ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ) ਜੋਤਿ-ਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰੀਂ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਭੀ ਕਰੀਂ
ਮਿਲਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੧॥
mil maa-i-aa surat gavaa-ee. ||1||
but engrossed in the love for Maya, you lost your discerning sense. ||1||
ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਚੇਤਾ ਹੀ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧॥
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਰਸਹਿ ਮਾਣਾ ॥
moorakh man kaahay karseh maanaa.
O’ my foolish mind, why do you indulge in egotistical pride of false worldly possessions?
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤਾਂ ਦਾ) ਕਿਉਂ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
uth chalnaa khasmai bhaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You shall have to depart from here when command comes from the Master-God. ||1||Pause||
ਜਦੋਂ) ਖਸਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਦੋਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਪਏਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤਜਿ ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
taj saad sahj sukh ho-ee.
(O’ my mind), spiritual peace and poise wells up only by abandoning the worldly pleasures.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਘਰ ਛਡਣੇ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
ghar chhadnay rahai na ko-ee.
These worldly homes have to be abandoned; no one remains here forever.
ਇਹ) ਘਰ ਤਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ (ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ) ਟਿਕਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਕਿਛੁ ਖਾਜੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਧਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
kichh khaajai kichh Dhar jaa-ee-ai.
You may be using some of the worldly wealth and amassing the rest for future (for the next life).
ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਇਹ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ) ਕੁਝ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਖਾ-ਹੰਢਾ ਲਈਏ ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖੀ ਜਾਈਏ,
ਜੇ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਆਈਐ ॥੨॥
jay baahurh dunee-aa aa-ee-ai. ||2||
(But that would be wise only) if you were to come back in this world to use this wealth. ||2||
(ਪਰ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਤਾਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜੇ ਮੁੜ (ਇਸ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਸਕਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ ॥੨॥
ਸਜੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਟੁ ਹਢਾਏ ॥
saj kaa-i-aa pat hadhaa-ay.
(forsaking God) one adorns his body and dress up in expensive silken clothes,
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਜਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰੇਸ਼ਮੀ ਕਪੜਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਹੰਢਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
furmaa-is bahut chalaa-ay.
issues many commands,
ਹੁਕਮ ਭੀ ਬਥੇਰਾ ਚਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਕਰਿ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
kar sayj sukhaalee sovai.
and sleeps on a comfortable bed,
ਅਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੇਜ ਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਭੀ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
ਹਥੀ ਪਉਦੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਰੋਵੈ ॥੩॥
hathee pa-udee kaahay rovai. ||3||
but when seized by the demon of death, then why does he cry? ||3||
ਆਖ਼ਿਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਜਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ? ॥੩॥
ਘਰ ਘੁੰਮਣਵਾਣੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
ghar ghummanvaanee bhaa-ee.
O’ my brothers! emotional attachments to household affairs are like the whirlpools in a river.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਘਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਰਿਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਘੁੰਮਣ ਘੇਰੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਹਨ,
