ਪਾਪ ਪਥਰ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
paap pathar taran na jaa-ee.
the boat of life with loads of sins can not cross through these whirlpools.
ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਲੱਦ ਕੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਘੁੰਮਣ-ਘੇਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਭਉ ਬੇੜਾ ਜੀਉ ਚੜਾਊ ॥
bha-o bayrhaa jee-o charhaa-oo.
If one rides the boat of the revered fear of God, (only then he can go through these whirlpools).
ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਵਾਰ ਹੋਵੇ,(ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਘੁੰਮਣ ਘੇਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਾਹੂ ॥੪॥੨॥
kaho naanak dayvai kaahoo. ||4||2||
Nanak says! God blesses this kind of boat to a rare person. ||4||2||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਅਜੇਹੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਲੇਖ ਪਏ ॥
karnee kaagad man masvaanee buraa bhalaa du-ay laykh pa-ay.
The conduct of mortals is like a paper and their mind is like an inkpot; both good and bad deeds are being written (which becomes their destiny).
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਚਰਨ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਦਵਾਤ ਹੈ ਆਚਰਨ-ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਉਤੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਆਹੀ ਨਾਲ) ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ.
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਚਲੀਐ ਤਉ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥
ji-o ji-o kirat chalaa-ay ti-o chalee-ai ta-o gun naahee ant haray. ||1||
The mortals (are helpless because they) think and do deeds according to their preordained destiny based on their past deeds; O’ God! there is no limit to Your virtues. ||1||
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕੱਠ-ਰੂਪ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ; ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥
ਚਿਤ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਕੀ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਵਰਿਆ ॥
chit chaytas kee nahee baavri-aa.
O’ foolish mind! why don’t you remember God?
ਹੇ ਕਮਲੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ?
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har bisrat tayray gun gali-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By forsaking God, your virtues are decreasing. ||1||Pause||
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਘਟਦੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਾਲੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਾਲੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਹੂਆ ਜੇਤੀ ਘੜੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਤੇਤੀ ॥
jaalee rain jaal din hoo-aa jaytee gharhee faahee taytee.
O’ my mind, every night and every day of your life is like a net and as many are the moments, so many are the nooses to trap you in Maya.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਰਾਤ ਜਾਲ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਜਿਤਨੀਆਂ ਭੀ ਘੜੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾਣ ਹਿਤ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਕਵਨ ਗੁਣੀ ॥੨॥
ras ras chog chugeh nit faaseh chhootas moorhay kavan gunee. ||2||
Everyday you bite at the bait of vices with great relish and keep getting deeper and deeper into vices; O’ fool, with what virtues are you going to escape? ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਸਦਾ ਫਸਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਨਾਲ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ? ॥੨॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਆਰਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੀ ॥
kaa-i-aa aaran man vich lohaa panch agan tit laag rahee.
O’ mortal! the human body is like a furnace and the mind is like a piece of iron in it, the five vices are like the fire heating the furnace;
ਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ, ਮਾਨੋ ਇੱਕ ਭੱਠੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਭੱਠੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਲੋਹਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜ ਅੱਗਾਂ ਬਲ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਕੋਇਲੇ ਪਾਪ ਪੜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਜਲਿਆ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਭਈ ॥੩॥
ko-ilay paap parhay tis oopar man jali-aa sanHee chint bha-ee. ||3||
Sins are like charcoal to boost the heat and worries are like the tongs to burn the mind completely. ||3||
ਤਪਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਜ਼ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੋਲੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਮਨ (ਇਸ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਚਿੰਤਾ ਦੀ ਸੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਹੈ (ਜੋ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਭਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਸਾੜਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਦਦ ਦੇ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ) ॥੩॥
ਭਇਆ ਮਨੂਰੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਨੇਹਾ ॥
bha-i-aa manoor kanchan fir hovai jay gur milai tinayhaa.
O’ brother, if one meets a perfect Guru then his useless and burnt iron-like mind which is full of sins can become pure like gold.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਜੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸੜ ਕੇ ਨਿਕੰਮਾ ਲੋਹਾ ਹੋ ਚੁਕੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਸੋਨਾ ਬਣਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਓਹੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਟਸਿ ਦੇਹਾ ॥੪॥੩॥
ayk naam amrit oh dayvai ta-o naanak taristas dayhaa. ||4||3||
O’ Nanak, the Guru blesses the ambrosial Name of God, which (takes the mind away from vices and) the body is held steady. ||4||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੪॥੩॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਬਿਮਲ ਮਝਾਰਿ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਰੇ ॥
bimal majhaar basas nirmal jal padman jaaval ray.
The lotus flower and the algae are present in the clean water of the pond.
(ਹੇ ਡੱਡੂ!) ਸਾਫ਼ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਫ਼ ਸੁਥਰੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਤੇ ਜਾਲਾ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਜਲ ਰਸ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
padman jaaval jal ras sangat sang dokh nahee ray. ||1||
The lotus flower surrounded by water and algae remains unaffected by both; (similarly a follower of the Guru remains unaffected by the vices). ||1||
ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਉਸ ਜਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਗ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੇ ॥੧॥
ਦਾਦਰ ਤੂ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
daadar too kabeh na jaanas ray.
O’ frog, you never understand,
ਹੇ ਡੱਡੂ! ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ,
ਭਖਸਿ ਸਿਬਾਲੁ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਖਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhakhas sibaal basas nirmal jal amrit na lakhas ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
that you live in pure water but eat the algae, and never realize the worth of nectar like water; (similarly a self-conceited person, even living among the pious people do not understand the worth of remembering God). ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਫ਼-ਸੁਥਰੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਸਾਫ਼-ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ) ਜਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਜੋ ਉਸ ਸਾਫ਼ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਤ ਨ ਵਸਤ ਅਲੀਅਲ ਮੇਰ ਚਚਾ ਗੁਨ ਰੇ ॥
bas jal nit na vasat alee-al mayr chachaa gun ray.
(O’ frog), you always live in water, although the bumble bee does not reside in water, still it sits on the top of the lotus flower and sucks the sweet juice.
ਹੇ ਡੱਡੂ! (ਤੇਰਾ) ਸਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਵਾਸ ਹੈ, ਭੌਰਾ (ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ) ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ, (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਉਹ (ਫੁੱਲ ਦੀ) ਚੋਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਚੂਸਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਚੰਦ ਕੁਮੁਦਨੀ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਨਿਵਸਸਿ ਅਨਭਉ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
chand kumudanee Dhoorahu nivsas anbha-o kaaran ray. ||2||
Just as the Kami flower bends upon sensing the moon in the distance, (similarly, pious people bow down even at the thought of the Divine-Guru). ||2||
ਕੰਮੀ ਚੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰੋਂ ਹੀ (ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਖਿੜ ਕੇ) ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦਿਲੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਖੰਡੁ ਦੂਧਿ ਮਧੁ ਸੰਚਸਿ ਤੂ ਬਨ ਚਾਤੁਰ ਰੇ ॥
amrit khand dooDh maDh sanchas too ban chaatur ray.
O’ the clever frog of water, God amasses the sublime sweetness of sugar and honey in (cow’s) milk;
ਹੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਚਤੁਰ ਡੱਡੂ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਖੰਡ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਦ ਵਰਗੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮਿਠਾਸ ਦੁੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਪਿਸਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
apnaa aap too kabahu na chhodas pisan pareet ji-o ray. ||3||
just as you don’t abandon your habit of eating algae and the tick attached to cow’s udder loves blood instead of milk, (similarly a self-conceited persons loves poisonous worldly riches instead of Naam). ||3||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਾਲਾ ਖਾਂਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਥਣ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਬੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਚਿੱਚੜ ਦੀ ਲਹੂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਦੁੱਧ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੩॥
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਜਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਗਮ ਸਾਸ ਸੁਨੇ ॥
pandit sang vaseh jan moorakh aagam saas sunay.
O’ brother, many foolish persons live in the company of the pandits and also listen to discourses from the vedas and shastras, (but they never abandon their foolish nature).
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੂਰਖ ਬੰਦੇ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਹ ਵੇਦ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਰਖਤਾ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੇ;
ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੪॥
apnaa aap too kabahu na chhodas su-aan poochh ji-o ray. ||4||
O’ frog-like self conceited person, just as a dog’s tail never gets straightened, similarly you do not renounce your evil nature. ||4||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਪੂਛਲ (ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਟੇਡਾ-ਪਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੀ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੇ ਡੱਡੂ! ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਰੇ ॥
ik paakhandee naam na raacheh ik har har charnee ray.
There are many hypocrites who do not fall in love with God’s Name, but there are many fortunates who always remain attuned to His immaculate Name.
ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਪਖੰਡੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ , ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਰੇ ॥੫॥੪॥
poorab likhi-aa paavas naanak rasnaa naam jap ray. ||5||4||
O’ Nanak, meditate on God’s Name with your tongue, you would receive what has been preordained to you. ||5||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਜਪਿਆ ਕਰ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੁਛ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕੁਛ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ ॥੫॥੪॥

ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਅਸੰਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗ ॥
patit puneet asaNkh hohi har charnee man laag.
Countless sinners, whose minds get attuned to God, become immaculate.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗ ॥੧॥
athsath tirath naam parabh naanak jis mastak bhaag. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the merit of sixty-eight places of pilgrimage is there in remembering God’s Name; but he alone, who is predestined, receives it.||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ, ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਣ ॥੧॥

ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਹੇਲੀ ॥
sakhee sahaylee garab gahaylee.
O’ my ego-engrossed friend and companion,
ਹੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਰਸ-ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਮੱਤੀ ਸਖੀਏ! ਮੇਰੀਏ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! (ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੰਨ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜੀਭ!)।
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਹ ਕੀ ਇਕ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ॥੧॥
sun sah kee ik baat suhaylee. ||1||
listen to the peace giving praises of the Husband-God. ||1||
ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣ (ਤੇ ਕਰ), ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜੋ ਮੈ ਬੇਦਨ ਸਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾ ਮਾਈ ॥
jo mai baydan saa kis aakhaa maa-ee.
O’ my mother, to whom may I relate the anguish of my mind?
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਮਾਂ! ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ?
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਕੈਸੇ ਰਾਖਾ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har bin jee-o na rahai kaisay raakhaa maa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ my mother, my mind cannot rest without realizing God; how else can I calm it? ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਯਾਦ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ। ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਘਬਰਾਹਟ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਚਾਵਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਉ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਖਰੀ ਰੰਞਾਣੀ ॥
ha-o dohaagan kharee ranjaanee.
I am an unfortunate soul-bride who is extremely miserable,
ਮੈਂ ਮੰਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ, ਮੈਂ ਬੜੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਹਾਂ ,
ਗਇਆ ਸੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
ga-i-aa so joban Dhan pachhutaanee. ||2||
like that woman whose youth, which could unite her with her husband, has passed and now she is repenting. ||2||
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਜਿਸ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਜੋਬਨ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤੂ ਦਾਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
too daanaa saahib sir mayraa.
O’ God, You are my sagacious supreme Master
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਦਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹੈਂ ।
ਖਿਜਮਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਜਨੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
khijmat karee jan bandaa tayraa. ||3||
I wish that I may always humbly serve You like Your devotee and sevant. ||3||
(ਮੇਰੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਤੇਰੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਏਹੀ ॥
bhanat naanak andaysaa ayhee.
Nanak humbly prays, this is my only concern,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈਸੇ ਰਵਉ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥੪॥੫॥
bin darsan kaisay rava-o sanayhee. ||4||5||
that without the blessed vision of my beloved God, how can I enjoy union with Him? ||4||5||
ਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਪਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਬਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੪॥੫॥
