ਮਲੁ ਕੂੜੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਤਾਰੀਅਨੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥
mal koorhee naam utaaree-an jap naam ho-aa sachiaar.
Because by meditating on God’s Name, that person has washed off the filth of falsehood and has become a truthful person.
ਕੂੜੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਤਾਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਏਹਿ ਚਲਤ ਹਹਿ ਸੋ ਜੀਵਉ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
jan naanak jis day ayhi chalat heh so jeeva-o dayvanhaar. ||2||
O’ devotee Nanak! that God whose wondrous plays are all these, that beneficent God is eternal.||2||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਕੌਤਕ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ (ਭਾਵ ਅਟੱਲ) ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਤੁਧੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥
tuDh jayvad daataa naahi kis aakh sunaa-ee-ai.
O’ God, there is no other benefactor as great as You, to whom should we describe our state of mind?
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਜੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੁਖੜੇ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਦੱਸੀਏ?
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
gur parsaadee paa-ay jithahu ha-umai jaa-ee-ai.
It is only through the Guru’s grace, that we receive the ambrosial nectar of Naam and ego is also dispelled through him.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਥੋਂ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ’ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਥੋ ਹੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ;
ਰਸ ਕਸ ਸਾਦਾ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈਐ ॥
ras kas saadaa baahraa sachee vadi-aa-ee-ai.
God is above all the worldly tastes and relishes and eternal is His glory.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਇ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ॥
jis no bakhsay tis day-ay aap la-ay milaa-ee-ai.
One upon whom God bestows mercy, He blesses that person with the ambrosial nectar of Naam, and unites him with Himself.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਿਆਈ ॥੯॥
ghat antar amrit rakhi-on gurmukh kisai pi-aa-ee. ||9||
God has kept the ambrosial nectar of Naam in everybody’s heart, He inspires a rare one to partake it through the Guru. ||9||
(ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਬਾਬਾਣੀਆ ਕਹਾਣੀਆ ਪੁਤ ਸਪੁਤ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
baabaanee-aa kahaanee-aa put saput karayn.
Talking to children about the Guru’s stories makes them virtuous,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਾਖੀਆਂ (ਸਿੱਖ-) ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਪੁੱਤਰ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ;
ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਸੇਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
je satgur bhaavai so man lain say-ee karam karayn.
They accept what is pleasing to the true Guru, and act accordingly.
ਉਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਯਕੀਨ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬਿਆਸ ਸੁਕ ਨਾਰਦ ਬਚਨ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
jaa-ay puchhahu simrit saasat bi-aas suk naarad bachan sabh sarisat karayn.
You may go and consult Simrities and Shastras or ask such wise sages like Vyaas, Suk, and Narad, who preach this to the entire world.
ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ, ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ ਵਿਆਸ ਸੁਕ ਤੇ ਨਾਰਦ ਵਰਗਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਵੇਖੋ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਚੈ ਲਾਏ ਸਚਿ ਲਗੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲੇਨਿ ॥
sachai laa-ay sach lagay sadaa sach samaalayn.
Those whom the eternal God has attached to the true Guru’s teachings, remain focused on Him and always lovingly remember Him, the eternal God.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਕੌਤਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਲਾਇਆ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਜੁੜੇ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਭਏ ਜਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇਨਿ ॥੧॥
naanak aa-ay say parvaan bha-ay je saglay kul taarayn. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the advent of those into this world is approved who redeem all their lineages. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਸਿਖ ਭੀ ਅੰਧੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
guroo jinaa kaa anDhulaa sikh bhee anDhay karam karan.
The disciples, whose guru is ignorant, do evil deeds.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਆਪ) ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਭੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਕੰਮ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ) ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਓਇ ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲਨਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਨਿਤ ਝੂਠੋ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲੇਨਿ ॥
o-ay bhaanai chalan aapnai nit jhootho jhooth boliyan.
They follow their own misguided intellect and always utter lie after lie.
(ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਉਹ (ਸਿੱਖ) ਆਪਣੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
koorh kusat kamaavday par nindaa sadaa karayn.
They practice falsehood and deception and always slander others.
ਝੂਠ ਤੇ ਠੱਗੀ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਡੋਬੇਨਿ ॥
o-ay aap dubay par nindkaa saglay kul dobayn.
They who slander others, not only drown themselves in the world-ocean of vices but also drown all their lineages.
ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਡੁੱਬਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਭੀ ਗ਼ਰਕ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਤੁ ਓਇ ਲਾਏ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗੇ ਉਇ ਬਪੁੜੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥੨॥
naanak jit o-ay laa-ay tit lagay u-ay bapurhay ki-aa karayn. ||2||
O’ Nanak, they remain attached to whatever God has attached them; what can the poor creatures do? ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ਕਰਨ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ? ਜਿਧਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ) ਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਓਧਰ ਹੀ ਲੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਸਭ ਨਦਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਦਾ ਜੇਤੀ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਕੀਤੀ ॥
sabh nadree andar rakh-daa jaytee sisat sabh keetee.
God keeps under His glance of grace the entire universe, which He has created.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ) ਜਿਤਨੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਸਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਹੇਠ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਕਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕੁਸਤਿ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ॥
ik koorh kusat laa-i-an manmukh vigootee.
God has attached many to falsehood and deception, these self-willed persons are getting spiritually ruined.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠ ਤੇ ਠੱਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਲਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ॥
gurmukh sadaa Dhi-aa-ee-ai andar har pareetee.
Those who follow the true Guru’s teachings, always lovingly remember God, because within them is love for Him.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ ਵਾਤਿ ਸਿਪੀਤੀ ॥
jin ka-o potai punn hai tinH vaat sipeetee.
Those who have the treasure of virtues, they always utter God’s praises.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਜਾਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨੇਕੀ ਹੈ; ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂਹੰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਸਲਾਹ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਈ ॥੧੦॥
naanak naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai sach sifat sanaa-ee. ||10||
O’ Nanak, we should always lovingly remember God’s Name; the glory of His praises is eternal. ||10||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥

Shalok, First Guru:
ਸਤੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
satee paap kar sat kamaahi.
(In kalyug) people of charity gather wealth by committing sins, they give part of it away in charity and think they are practicing righteousness.
(ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਦੇ) ਦਾਨੀ ਪੁਰਸ਼, ਗੁਨਾਹ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਦੋਲਤ ਦਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਇਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਧਰਮ ਕਮਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ
ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਦੇਵਣ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
gur deekhi-aa ghar dayvan jaahi.
The self proclaimed gurus, for the sake of worldly wealth, go to the houses of their disciples to impart teachings.
(ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ (ਕਹਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ) (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਭਾਉ ॥
istaree purkhai khati-ai bhaa-o.
A so called faithful wife loves her husband only for what he earns,
(ਅਖਵਾਂਦੀ ਪਤਿਬ੍ਰਤਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਲਿਆਵੇ,
ਭਾਵੈ ਆਵਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
bhaavai aava-o bhaavai jaa-o.
otherwise she doesn’t care whether he comes home or not.
(ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ) ਪਤੀ ਚਾਹੇ ਘਰ ਆਵੇ ਚਾਹੇ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਏ (ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ)।
ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
saasat bayd na maanai ko-ay.
Nobody obeys what is written in the Shaastras and the Vedas,
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਵੇਦ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨ ਰਿਹਾ,
ਆਪੋ ਆਪੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapo aapai poojaa ho-ay.
Everyone is working for their own needs as if doing self-worship.
ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਰਜ਼ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਜੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਆਇ ॥
kaajee ho-ay kai bahai ni-aa-ay.
Assuming the role of a Qazi (Muslim judge) one administers justice,
ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦਾ) ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਫੇਰੇ ਤਸਬੀ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
fayray tasbee karay khudaa-ay.
counts beads of the rosary and utters God’s Name.
ਤਸਬੀ ਫੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਵਢੀ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਹਕੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
vadhee lai kai hak gavaa-ay.
Accepting bribery he deprives many people of true justice,
(ਪਰ ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਵੱਢੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਦੂਜੇ ਦਾ) ਹੱਕ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪੁਛੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
jay ko puchhai taa parh sunaa-ay.
If some one questions his decison, he quotes some verse (from the Muslim law to support his false decision).
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਤੇ) ਇਤਰਾਜ਼ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ (ਕੋਈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ਰ੍ਹਾ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੁਰਕ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਕਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
turak mantar kan ridai samaahi.
The Hindhu leaders listen and follow the orders of the Muslim rulars as if the Muslim laws are in their ears and in their hearts.
(ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਤੱਕੋ, ਆਪਣੇ) ਕੰਨ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਤਾਂ) ਤੁਰਕ (ਹਾਕਮਾਂ) ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਲੋਕ ਮੁਹਾਵਹਿ ਚਾੜੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
lok muhaaveh chaarhee khaahi.
They plunder the people and then turn against them.
ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਟਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ (ਹਾਕਮਾਂ ਪਾਸ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਚਉਕਾ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਐਸਾ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
cha-ukaa day kai suchaa ho-ay. aisaa hindoo vaykhhu ko-ay.
Look at such a Hindu, who calls himself pure by simply anointing his kitchen.
ਵੇਖੋ ਐਸੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਵਲ! ਜੋ (ਨਿਰਾ) ਚੌਕਾ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਸੁੱਚਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੋਗੀ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜਟਾ ਬਿਭੂਤ ॥
jogee girhee jataa bibhoot.
The Yogi, with matted hair and ashes on his body, has become a family man.
ਜੋਗੀ ਨੇ ਜਟਾਂ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ, ਸੁਆਹ ਭੀ ਮਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਹੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ,
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥
aagai paachhai roveh poot.
Children are crying around him (because his family still depends on him).
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਅੰਞਾਣੇ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
jog na paa-i-aa jugat gavaa-ee.
He has not attained yoga (union with God), but has lost the proper way of living.
ਜੋਗ-ਮਾਰਗ ਭੀ ਨਾਹ ਲੱਭਾ ਤੇ ਜੀਉਣ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਭੀ ਗਵਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥
kit kaaran sir chhaa-ee paa-ee.
One wonders, why has he put ashes on his head (lost his honor)?
ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਆਹ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਾਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ?
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
naanak kal kaa ayhu parvaan.
O’ Nanak, this is the effect of KalYug,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ,
ਆਪੇ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
aapay aakhan aapay jaan. ||1||
that people themselves are justifying and approving, what they say or do.||1||
ਕਿ ਕਲਿਜੁਗੀ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਰਤੂਤ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਹਿੰਦੂ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਵੈ ॥
hindoo kai ghar hindoo aavai.
When a child is born into a Hindu family,
ਜਦੋ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੂਤੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਪੜਿ ਗਲਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
soot janay-oo parh gal paavai.
after chanting some mantras (a Brahmin) puts a sacred cotton thread around his neck (and declares, that now he has become a Hindu).
ਤੇ (ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਆਦਿਕ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਗਾ ਜਨੇਊ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੂਤੁ ਪਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥
soot paa-ay karay buri-aa-ee.
But even after wearing this sacred thread, if that person indulges in bad deeds,
(ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨੇਊ ਤਾਂ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਜਨੇਊ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਮੰਦ-ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਤਾ ਧੋਤਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
naataa Dhotaa thaa-ay na paa-ee.
none of his sacred ablutions and purifications are approved in God’s presence.
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਿੱਤ) ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਧੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
musalmaan karay vadi-aa-ee.
A Muslim glorifies his own faith,
ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਦੀਨ ਦੀ) ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
