ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਲੇਹੁ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
kar da-i-aa layho larh laa-ay.
O’ God, bestow mercy and attach me with Your Name,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੜ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲੈ।
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥
naankaa naam Dhi-aa-ay. ||1||
so that I, Nanak, may keep meditating on Your Name. ||1||
ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ ॥੧॥
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
deenaa naath da-i-aal mayray su-aamee deenaa naath da-i-aal.
O’ merciful Master of the meek, O’ my merciful Master-God,
ਹੇ ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਸਮ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਸੋਮੇ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਹੇ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆਲ!
ਜਾਚਉ ਸੰਤ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaacha-o sant ravaal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I beg for the most humble service of Your saints. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੂਪ ॥
sansaar bikhi-aa koop.
This world is like a pit of Maya which is poison for the spiritual life,
ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦਾ ਖੂਹ ਹੈ,
ਤਮ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਮੋਹਤ ਘੂਪ ॥
tam agi-aan mohat ghoop.
because of the utter darkness of spiritual ignorance, I am being enticed by Maya,
ਆਤਮਕ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ ਦੇ ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ;
ਗਹਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
geh bhujaa parabh jee layho.
O’ reverend God, please extend Your support and pull me out of this pit of Maya.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਂਹ ਫੜ ਕੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈ
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਦੇਹੁ ॥
har naam apunaa dayh.
O’ God! please bless me with Your Name.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼!
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥
parabh tujh binaa nahee thaa-o.
O’ God, except You, I have no one else to support me,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥
naankaa bal bal jaa-o. ||2||
Nanak is dedicated to You for ever. ||2||
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ , ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧੀ ਦੇਹ ॥
lobh mohi baaDhee dayh.
The human body is in the grip of greed and attachment,
ਮੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਖੇਹ ॥
bin bhajan hovat khayh.
Without remembering You, it is becoming useless like dust.
(ਤੇਰਾ) ਭਜਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ॥
jamdoot mahaa bha-i-aan.
The demons of death appear very dreadful to me.
ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਡਰਾਉਣੇ ਲੱਗ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਚਿਤ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਰਮਹਿ ਜਾਨ ॥
chit gupat karmeh jaan.
Chittar Gupat (conscious and unconscious mind) knows my deeds.
ਚਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਾਖਿ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥
din rain saakh sunaa-ay.
Day and night, they bear witness against me.
ਦਿਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਤ (ਇਹ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ) ਗਵਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਕੇ (ਇਹੀ ਕਹਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਮੰਦ-ਕਰਮੀ ਹਾਂ)
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
naankaa har sarnaa-ay. ||3||
O’ God! Nanak has come to Your refuge. ||3||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bhanjnaa muraar.
O’ God, the destroyer of dreads,
ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!
ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਿ ॥
kar da-i-aa patit uDhaar.
bestow mercy and save me, the sinner, from vices.
ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਖ ਗਨੇ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
mayray dokh ganay na jaahi.
My sins cannot even be counted.
ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਗਿਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਤਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
har binaa kateh samaahi.
O’ God! except You, no one can erase these?
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਗਹਿ ਓਟ ਚਿਤਵੀ ਨਾਥ ॥
geh ot chitvee naath.
O’ my Master! I thought of Your support and seized it.
ਹੇ ਨਾਥ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੀ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੇ ਰਖੁ ਹਾਥ ॥੪॥
naankaa day rakh haath. ||4||
O’ God! extend Your support and save Nanak from the vices. ||4||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਆਪਣਾ ਹੱਥ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੪॥
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
har gun niDhay gopaal.
O’ God! the treasure of virtues and the protector of the universe,
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਹੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ! ਹੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਰੱਖਿਅਕ,
ਸਰਬ ਘਟ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
sarab ghat partipaal.
O the sustainer of all hearts.
ਹੇ ਸਭ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ!
ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥
man pareet darsan pi-aas.
In my mind is a keen desire for Your love and Your blessed vision.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ। ,
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸ ॥
gobind pooran aas.
O’ God of the universe! please fulfill this desire of mine.
ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਆਸ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ!
ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
ik nimakh rahan na jaa-ay.
O’ God! I cannot spiritually survive without You even for a moment.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈ ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਰਿਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਵਡ ਭਾਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥
vad bhaag naanak paa-ay. ||5||
O’ Nanak, one realizes You only by great good fortune. ||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਵੱਡੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰ ॥
parabh tujh binaa nahee hor.
O’ God! except for You, there is no one else more dear to me.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ (ਆਸਰਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚੰਦ ਚਕੋਰ ॥
man pareet chand chakor.
My mind loves You, as the partridge loves the moon,
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ (ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਚਕੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਜਲ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
ji-o meen jal si-o hayt.
just as the fish loves the water,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮਛਲੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ l,
ਅਲਿ ਕਮਲ ਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
al kamal bhinn na bhayt.
just as the bee and the lotus flower cannot be separated,
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਭੌਰ ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ,
ਜਿਉ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰਜ ਆਸ ॥
ji-o chakvee sooraj aas.
just as the chakvi bird (shelduck) longs for the sun,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚਕਵੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਰਜ (ਦੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ) ਦੀ ਉਡੀਕ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਰਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥੬॥
naanak charan pi-aas. ||6||
similarly, O’ God! Nanak has a craving for Your immaculate Name. ||6||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਜਿਉ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਭਰਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥
ji-o tarun bharat paraan.
Just as for a young bride, her husband is dear like her own life,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜੁਆਨ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਖਸਮ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰਾ (ਜਿੰਦ-ਜਨ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉ ਲੋਭੀਐ ਧਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
ji-o lobhee-ai Dhan daan.
as the greedy person becomes happy upon receiving wealth,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ-ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉ ਦੂਧ ਜਲਹਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥
ji-o dooDh jaleh sanjog.
as is the union between milk and water,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਦੁੱਧ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉ ਮਹਾ ਖੁਧਿਆਰਥ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
ji-o mahaa khuDhi-aarath bhog.
as food is dear to an extremely hungry person,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ),
ਜਿਉ ਮਾਤ ਪੂਤਹਿ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
ji-o maat pooteh hayt.
and as a mother loves her son,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇਤ ॥੭॥
har simar naanak nayt. ||7||
similarly O’ Nanak, you should always remember God with adoration. ||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ) ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ ॥੭॥
ਜਿਉ ਦੀਪ ਪਤਨ ਪਤੰਗ ॥
ji-o deep patan patang.
As the moth, for its love for flame, falls into the lighted lamp,
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਬੱਝੇ) ਭੰਬਟ ਦੀਵੇ ਉਤੇ ਡਿੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਿਉ ਚੋਰੁ ਹਿਰਤ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥
ji-o chor hirat nisang.
as the thief steals without hesitation,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚੋਰ ਝਾਕਾ ਲਾਹ ਕੇ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੈਗਲਹਿ ਕਾਮੈ ਬੰਧੁ ॥
maiglahi kaamai banDh.
an elephant gets entrapped by his lustful urges,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਬਿਖਈ ਧੰਧੁ ॥
ji-o garsat bikh-ee DhanDh.
a sinner remains entangled in the sinful life,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ) ਧੰਧਾ ਗ੍ਰਸੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉ ਜੂਆਰ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
ji-o joo-aar bisan na jaa-ay.
as the gambler’s addiction does not leave him,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜੁਆਰੀਏ ਦੀ (ਜੂਆ ਖੇਡਣ ਦੀ) ਭੈੜੀ ਆਦਤ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੮॥
har naanak ih man laa-ay. ||8||
O’ Nanak, similarly keep this mind of yours attuned to God. ||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤਿਵੇਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖੀਂ ॥੮॥
ਕੁਰੰਕ ਨਾਦੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
kurank naadai nayhu.
Just as a deer loves the sound of the hunter’s bell,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਹਰਨ ਦਾ ਘੰਡੇਹੇੜੇ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਚਾਹਤ ਮੇਹੁ ॥
chaatrik chaahat mayhu.
and as the song-bird longs for the rain,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਪੀਹਾ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਮੀਂਹ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਜਨ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ॥
jan jeevnaa satsang.
similarly God’s devotee likes to live in the company of the holy persons,
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਭਜਨਾ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
gobid bhajnaa rang.
where he lovingly remembers God.
ਜਿਥੇ ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈL
ਰਸਨਾ ਬਖਾਨੈ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸਨ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੯॥
rasnaa bakhaanai naam. naanak darsan daan. ||9||
O’ Nanak, the devotee keeps reciting God’s Name with his tongue and begs for the gift of His blessed vision. ||9||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੇਵਕ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਸੁਨਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੇਇ ॥
gun gaa-ay sun likh day-ay.
One who sings, listens and writes about God’s praises and inspires others,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ, ਸੁਣ ਕੇ, ਲਿਖ ਕੇ (ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਸਰਬ ਫਲ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
so sarab fal har lay-ay.
he realizes God, the benefactor of the fruits of all his desires.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਫਲ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਕਰਤ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
kul samooh karat uDhaar. sansaar utras paar.
Such a person crosses over the world-ocean of vices and also gets his entire lineage emancipated.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਾਰ-ਉਤਾਰਾ ਕਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਹਿ ॥
har charan bohith taahi. mil saaDhsang jas gaahi.
Joining the company of the Guru, those who sing the praises of God, His immaculate Name is like a ship to carry them across the world-ocean of vices.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਲਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹਨ l
ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥੧੦॥੨॥
har paij rakhai muraar. har naanak saran du-aar. ||10||2||
O’ Nanak, they remain in God’s refuge and He protects their honor.||10||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,॥੧੦॥੨॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਕਮ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
aykam aykankaar niraalaa.
The first lunar day, there is but one God who is unique,
ਪਹਿਲੀ (ਤਿੱਥ): ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਅਮਰੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਲਾ ॥
amar ajonee jaat na jaalaa.
He is immortal, unborn, beyond any social class and any bonds.
ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਬੰਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ।
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ॥
agam agochar roop na raykh-i-aa.
He is inaccessible and incomprehensible, He has no form or feature.
ਉਹ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਤਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ॥
khojat khojat ghat ghat daykhi-aa.
But after searching Him again and again, He can be seen pervading each and every heart.
ਪਰ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੇਖ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
