ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਸੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
ant kaal pachhutaasee anDhulay jaa jam pakarh chalaa-i-aa.
At the end, the blind (spiritually ignorant) person regrets deeply when the messenger of death carries him away
ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ! ਜਦੋਂ ਜਮ ਨੇ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਤੂੰ ਪਛੁਤਾਏਂਗਾ।
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥
sabh kichh apunaa kar kar raakhi-aa khin meh bha-i-aa paraa-i-aa.
All the worldly things that you collect, in an instant after death becomes someone else’s property .
ਤੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਂਭਦਾ ਗਿਆ, ਉਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਮਾਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ।
ਬੁਧਿ ਵਿਸਰਜੀ ਗਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥
buDh visarjee ga-ee si-aanap kar avgan pachhutaa-ay.
Your intellect leaves, your wisdom departs and then you repent for the evil deeds you had committed.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਮਾਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸਿਆਣਪ ਗੁੰਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak paraanee teejai pahrai parabh chaytahu liv laa-ay. ||3||
Says Nanak, O mortal, in the third watch of night (third stage of life) watch of the night, let your consciousness be lovingly focused on God. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ) ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ॥੩॥
ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਣੁ ॥
cha-uthai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa biraDh bha-i-aa tan kheen.
In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your body grows old and weak.Your eyes go blind, and cannot see, O my merchant friend, and your ears do not hear any words.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ-ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਚੌਥੇ ਪਹਰ (ਜੀਵ) ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਦੀਸਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣੈ ਨ ਵੈਣ ॥
akhee anDh na dees-ee vanjaari-aa mitraa kannee sunai na vain.
O’ my merchant friend, in this stage of life, the eyes become cloudy and can\'t see properly, and the ears do not hear any words.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਅੱਖਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅੱਖੀਂ ਠੀਕ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲ (ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਾਕਉ ਤਾਣਾ ॥
akhee anDh jeebh ras naahee rahay paraaka-o taanaa.
Your eyes go blind, and your tongue is unable to taste; you live only with the help of others.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਅੱਖਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅੱਖੀਂ ਠੀਕ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲ (ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣ ਸਕਦਾ।ਅੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੀਭ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਆਦ (ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ) ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਉਹ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਦੇ ਬਲ ਆਸਰੇ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
gun antar naahee ki-o sukh paavai manmukh aavan jaanaa.
There are no virtues in the person (who does not follow the Guru’s advice and meditate on God’s Name). How can such a person find any peace? Therefore, the self-willed person goes in cycles of birth and death..
ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਏ, ਹੁਣ ਸੁਖ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਮਿਲੇ? ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖੜੁ ਪਕੀ ਕੁੜਿ ਭਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਇ ਚਲੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਣੁ ॥
kharh pakee kurh bhajai binsai aa-ay chalai ki-aa maan.
In old age, like a ripe crop, human body crumbles. How then can one be proud of this body (which is subject to decay and death)?
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੱਕੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਕੁੜਕ ਕੇ ਟੁੱਟਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਕਰੜਾ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਭੱਜ ਕੇ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਐਸੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ?
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੪॥
kaho naanak paraanee cha-uthai pahrai gurmukh sabad pachhaan. ||4||
Nanak says: “O’ my peddler friend, at least in the fourth stage of life (the old age), realize God’s Name through the Guru’s instruction.||4||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ) ਚੌਥੇ ਪਹਰ (ਤੂੰ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਹੁਣ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ॥੪॥
ਓੜਕੁ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਹਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਜਰੁ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਕੰਨਿ ॥
orhak aa-i-aa tin saahi-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa jar jarvaanaa kann.
O my mortal friend, the end of your allotted breaths has come, and your shoulders are weighed down by cruel old age.
ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਆ ਗਿਆ, ਬਲੀ ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਮੋਢੇ ਉੱਤੇ (ਨੱਚਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ)
ਇਕ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਵਗਣ ਖੜਸਨਿ ਬੰਨਿ ॥
ik ratee gun na samaani-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa avgan kharhsan bann.
Throughout your life, you did not have even an iota of virtue, so now your own vices will bind you and drive you away.
ਹੈ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕ ਭੋਰਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਨੇਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਈ ਅਤੇ ਬਦੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜਕੜਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੂੰ ਅਗੇ ਤੌਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ,
ਗੁਣ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
gun sanjam jaavai chot na khaavai naa tis jaman marnaa.
But the person who departs with self-discipline (or merits) and virtues, does not have to suffer and does not go through the the cycles of birth and death.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ ਇੱਥੋ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਚੋਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ।
ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
kaal jaal jam johi na saakai bhaa-ay bhagat bhai tarnaa.
The Messenger of Death and his trap cannot touch him; through loving devotional worship, he crosses over the ocean of fear.
ਜਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਲ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਉਸ ਵਲ ਤੱਕ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਡਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
pat saytee jaavai sahj samaavai saglay dookh mitaavai.
He goes with honor, absorbed in the supreme bliss, free of agonies.
ਉਹ ਇਥੋਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥੨॥
kaho naanak paraanee gurmukh chhootai saachay tay pat paavai. ||5||2||
O’ Nanak, such a Guru’s follower is emancipated (from birth and death), he is saved and honored by the True God.||5||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੨॥

Siree Raag, Fourth Mehl:
ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਉਦਰ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥
pahilai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa har paa-i-aa udar manjhaar.
(Comparing the human life to the four watches (stages) of night in a peddler’s life, who comes to this world to earn the treasure of Naam, the Guru says): in the first watch of the night (stage of life), O my merchant friend, God places you in mother’s womb.
ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਖ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰਿ ॥
har Dhi-aavai har uchrai vanjaari-aa mitraa har har naam samaar.
(In the mother’s womb), O my merchant friend, you meditate on God, chant His Name, and remain absorbed in Him.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! (ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ),ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥
har har naam japay aaraaDhay vich agnee har jap jeevi-aa.
Chanting the Naam, and meditating on it within the fire of the womb, your life is sustained by dwelling on the Naam.
(ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਰਾਧਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਰਸੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਥੀਵਿਆ ॥
baahar janam bha-i-aa mukh laagaa sarsay pitaa maat theevi-aa.
You are born and you come out of mother’ womb, and your mother and father are delighted to see your face.
(ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਤੋਂ) ਬਾਹਰ (ਆ ਕੇ) ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਦੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
jis kee vasat tis chaytahu paraanee kar hirdai gurmukh beechaar.
Remember the One, O mortal, who sent this child to the world. As Gurmukh, reflect upon Him within your heart.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਹੋ! ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹ ਬਾਲਕ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰੋ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
kaho naanak paraanee pahilai pahrai har japee-ai kirpaa Dhaar. ||1||
O Nanak, in the first stage of life, the mortal can remember God only by His Grace. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖ-ਜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ) ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
doojai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa man laagaa doojai bhaa-ay.
In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the mind gets attached wordly pleasures.
ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ, ਹੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਚਿੱਤ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਲੀਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
mayraa mayraa kar paalee-ai vanjaari-aa mitraa lay maat pitaa gal laa-ay.
Mother and father hug you close in their embrace, claiming, “He is mine, he is mine”; so is the child brought up, O my merchant friend.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ। ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਆਖ ਆਖ ਕੇ (ਬਾਲਕ) ਪਾਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਗਲ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਖਟਿ ਖਵਾਏ ॥
laavai maat pitaa sadaa gal saytee man jaanai khat khavaa-ay.
Your mother and father constantly hug you close in their embrace; in their minds, they believe that you will provide for them and support them.
ਮਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਿਓ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਿੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਆਪਣੇ ਰਿਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਆੲੈਗਾ।
ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੂੜਾ ਦਿਤੇ ਨੋ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥
jo dayvai tisai na jaanai moorhaa ditay no laptaa-ay.
The fool does not know the One who gives; instead, he clings to the gift.
ਮੂਰਖ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ (ਨਹੀਂ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ) ਜੇਹੜਾ (ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਧਨ ਆਦਿਕ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ (ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਧਨ ਆਦਿਕ) ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
ko-ee gurmukh hovai so karai veechaar har Dhi-aavai man liv laa-ay.
Rare is the Gurmukh who reflects upon, meditates upon, and within his mind, is lovingly attached to the Creator.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
kaho naanak doojai pahrai paraanee tis kaal na kabahooN khaa-ay. ||2||
Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, gurmukh, spiritually, death never devours you. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖ- ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ-ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਗਾ ਆਲਿ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ॥
teejai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa man lagaa aal janjaal.
In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your mind is entangled in worldly and household affairs.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ-ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਧਨੁ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਵੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
Dhan chitvai Dhan sanchvai vanjaari-aa mitraa har naamaa har na samaal.
You think of wealth, and gather wealth, O my merchant friend, but you do not contemplate the Creatoror the Naam.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਨ (ਹੀ) ਚਿਤਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਧਨ (ਹੀ) ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਸਮਾਲੈ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
har naamaa har har kaday na samaalai je hovai ant sakhaa-ee.
You never dwell upon the Naam, who will be your only Helper and Support in the end.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਆਖ਼ਿਰਕਾਰ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
