ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
doojai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa visar ga-i-aa Dhi-aan.
O’merchant friend, in the second watch of the night (stage of your life), as soon as you come out of the womb you become oblivious to God.
ਹੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਸੱਜਣਾ! ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ- ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ( ਜਨਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਥੋ ਹਥਿ ਨਚਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਜਸੁਦਾ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਨੁ ॥
hatho hath nachaa-ee-ai vanjaari-aa mitraa ji-o jasudaa ghar kaan.
Then, as a small child, you are lovingly passed around hand to hand as if you were little Krishna in the home of his mother Yashoda.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਨਵਾਂ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਜੀਵ, ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਉੱਤੇ (ਇਉਂ) ਨਚਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਸੋਧਾ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ।
ਹਥੋ ਹਥਿ ਨਚਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮਾਤ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਤੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
hatho hath nachaa-ee-ai paraanee maat kahai sut mayraa.
From hand to hand, you are passed around. your mother says, “This is my son.”
(ਨਵਾਂ ਜਨਮਿਆ) ਜੀਵ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਨਚਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਖਿਡਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ), ਮਾਂ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੈ।
ਚੇਤਿ ਅਚੇਤ ਮੂੜ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
chayt achayt moorh man mayray ant nahee kachh tayraa.
O’ my thoughtless and foolish mind, remember God, because in the end, nothing shall be yours.
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਚੇਤੇ ਰੱਖ, ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੇਗੀ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
jin rach rachi-aa tiseh na jaanai man bheetar Dhar gi-aan.
You are not seriously thinking in your mind about Him (God) who has created this body of yours.
ਜੀਵ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਜਿਸਨੇ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਣਤਰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੨॥
kaho naanak paraanee doojai pahrai visar ga-i-aa Dhi-aan. ||2||
O’ Nanak, a human forgets God in the second stage of life (after the birth).
ਨਾਨਕ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪੜਾਅ (ਜਨਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ॥
teejai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa Dhan joban si-o chit.
In the third watch of the night (stage of life), O my merchant friend, your mind becomes focused on wealth and pleasures of youth.
ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਆਏ ਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਚ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਧਾ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ॥
har kaa naam na chaythee vanjaari-aa mitraa baDhaa chhuteh jit.
You do not meditate on God’s Name, which can deliver you from the bondage of Maya.
ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ (ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾ ਸਕੇਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਬਿਕਲੁ ਭਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
har kaa naam na chaytai paraanee bikal bha-i-aa sang maa-i-aa.
The mortal does not meditate on God’s Name, and gets confused by Maya.
ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਇਤਨਾ ਡੌਰ-ਭੌਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ,
ਧਨ ਸਿਉ ਰਤਾ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮਤਾ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
Dhan si-o rataa joban mataa ahilaa janam gavaa-i-aa.
Revelling in your riches and amazed with youth, you waste your life uselessly.
ਧਨ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ, ਜਵਾਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤਿਆ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਰਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਧਰਮ ਸੇਤੀ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਮਿਤੁ ॥
Dharam saytee vaapaar na keeto karam na keeto mit.
Neither did you meditate on God nor did you make friends with virtuous deeds.
ਨਾਹ ਇਸ ਨੇ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਵਾਪਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੇ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak teejai pahrai paraanee Dhan joban si-o chit. ||3||
O’ Nanak, in the third stage of life, one’s mind is attached to wealth and youth.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ) ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ
ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲਾਵੀ ਆਇਆ ਖੇਤੁ ॥
cha-uthai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa laavee aa-i-aa khayt.
In the fourth stage of life, O my merchant friend, just as the crop grows to maturity and becomes fit for harvesting, you become old and ready to depart.
ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਮ੍ਰਿਤ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਚੌਥੇ ਪਹਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਆ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ) (ਸਰੀਰ-) ਖੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਢਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਜਮ) ਆ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ।
ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
jaa jam pakarh chalaa-i-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa kisai na mili-aa bhayt.
O’ my merchant friend, when the Messenger of Death seizes and dispatches the soul, no one knows the mystery of where you have gone.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਜਦੋਂ ਜਮ ਨੇ (ਆ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ) ਫੜ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਨਾਹ ਪਈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਕੀਹ ਹੋਇਆ
ਭੇਤੁ ਚੇਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
bhayt chayt har kisai na mili-o jaa jam pakarh chalaa-i-aa.
So think of Creator! No one knows this secret, of when the Messenger of Death will seize you and take you away.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੇ ਭੇਤ ਦੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਪੈ ਸਕੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਜਮ ਨੇ (ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ) ਫੜ ਕੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ।
ਝੂਠਾ ਰੁਦਨੁ ਹੋਆ ਦੋੁਆਲੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥
jhoothaa rudan ho-aa do-aalai khin meh bha-i-aa paraa-i-aa.
Then some false weeping and crying takes place around your dead body and in an instant you become a stranger
ਕੂੜਾ ਹੈ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਲੇ। ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਈ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
saa-ee vasat paraapat ho-ee jis si-o laa-i-aa hayt.
In the next life, you receive only that you had longed for in this life.
ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ (ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਮੋਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਗਈ (ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ)
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਲਾਵੀ ਲੁਣਿਆ ਖੇਤੁ ॥੪॥੧॥
kaho naanak paraanee cha-uthai pahrai laavee luni-aa khayt. ||4||1||
Says Nanak, O mortal, this is how the human life ends in the fourth stage of life like the ripe field is harvested.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਚੌਥੇ ਪਹਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਆ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਫ਼ਸਲ) ਵੱਢਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਨੇ ਸਰੀਰ-ਖੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਆ ਕੱਟਿਆ l

ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਾਲਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਅਚੇਤੁ ॥
pahilai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa baalak buDh achayt.
O’ my merchant friend, your innocent mind has a child-like understanding.
ਹੈ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਸੱਜਣਾ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ (ਜੀਵ) ਬਾਲਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਵਾਲਾ (ਅੰਞਾਣ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖੀਰੁ ਪੀਐ ਖੇਲਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਹੇਤੁ ॥ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਨੇਹੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਾਈ ॥
kheer pee-ai khaylaa-ee-ai vanjaari-aa mitraa maat pitaa sut hayt. maat pitaa sut nayhu ghanayraa maa-i-aa moh sabaa-ee.
O’ my merchant friend, you are suckled and fondled. Your father and mother love you immensely, and everyone is afflicted with the love for Maya.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਬਾਲਕ ਦੁੱਧ ਪੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਡ ਲਡਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l ਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਉ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ l ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ (ਇਹ) ਮੋਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ (ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
sanjogee aa-i-aa kirat kamaa-i-aa karnee kaar karaa-ee.
By the good fortune from the good deeds done in the past, you have come, and now you perform actions to determine your future.
ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਦੌਲਤ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਗਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਰਹੁ-ਰੀਤੀ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਬੂਡੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਹੇਤਿ ॥
raam naam bin mukat na ho-ee boodee doojai hayt.
Without meditating on God’s Name, there is no salvation, the entire world is drowning in duality (in the love of things other than God).
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਸ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਛੂਟਹਿਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿ ॥੧॥
kaho naanak paraanee pahilai pahrai chhootahigaa har chayt. ||1||
Nanak says, O’ mortal, even in the first stage of your life, you would be emancipated only by remembering God.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ,ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੇਂਗਾ
ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮੈ ਮਤਿ ॥
doojai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa bhar joban mai mat.
In the second watch of the night (stage of life), O my merchant friend, you are intoxicated with the wine of youth and beauty.
ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰੀ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚਿਤਿ ॥
ahinis kaam vi-aapi-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa anDhulay naam na chit.
Day and night, you are engrossed in sexual desire, O my merchant friend, and your consciousness is blind to the Naam.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਜੀਵ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਦਬਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਮੀਠੇ ॥
raam naam ghat antar naahee hor jaanai ras kas meethay.
One does not cherish the divine Name in the heart, because one deems all other indulgences and tastes as sweet.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ, (ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਕਸੈਲੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁਗੇ ਝੂਠੇ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan gun sanjam naahee janam marhugay jhoothay.
O’ false human being, without the merits of any divine wisdom, meditation, or self-discipline, you would keep suffering in rounds of births and deaths.
ਕੂੜੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੇ ਪਲੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਵੀਚਾਰ, ਬੰਦਗੀ ਨੇਕੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਪਾ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਹੇਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਮਰਣ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਏਗਾ।
ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
tirath varat such sanjam naahee karam Dharam nahee poojaa.
No ritualistic deeds, such as visiting) holy places, observing fasts, cleansing the body, or performing acts of piety and worship will be of any avail to you.
ਧਰਮ-ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾਂ, ਉਪਹਾਸ, ਸਫਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਰਿਆਜ਼ਤ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ, ਧਾਰਮਕ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥
naanak bhaa-ay bhagat nistaaraa dubiDhaa vi-aapai doojaa. ||2||
O’ Nanak, it is only through the loving adoration of God that one is emancipated. Everything else leads to duality (the love of worldly things).
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੋਖ਼ਸ਼ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਪਰੇਮ-ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ। ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂਦਾਰੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਗ਼ਲਤਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਸਰਿ ਹੰਸ ਉਲਥੜੇ ਆਇ ॥
teejai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa sar hans ultharhay aa-ay.
In the third stage of your life, O my merchant friend, you hair has turned grey, (indicating that span of your life has shortened and you should remember God).
ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਸਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੰਸ ਆ ਉੱਤਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਧੌਲੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੋਬਨੁ ਘਟੈ ਜਰੂਆ ਜਿਣੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਆਵ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
joban ghatai jaroo-aa jinai vanjaari-aa mitraa aav ghatai din jaa-ay.
O’ my merchant friend, youth wears itself out, and old age triumphs, as time passes, your days diminish.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਜੁਆਨੀ ਛਿਜਦੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਜਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਹਾੜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਮਰ ਕਮ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ l
