ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਅੰਤਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥
ih Dhan sampai maa-i-aa jhoothee ant chhod chali-aa pachhutaa-ee.
This wealth, property and Maya are false. In the end, you must leave these, and depart in sorrow.
ਇਹ ਦੌਲਤ, ਜਾਇਦਾਦ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੂੜ ਹਨ। ਅਖੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
jis no kirpaa karay gur maylay so har har naam samaal.
The one whom God, in His Mercy, unites with the Guru, reflect upon the Naam.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੇ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak teejai pahrai paraanee say jaa-ay milay har naal. ||3||
Says Nanak, Nanak says(such mortals who in this third stage meditate on God) go from here to unite with God
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜੇਹੜੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਭਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ.
ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਚਲਣ ਵੇਲਾ ਆਦੀ ॥
cha-uthai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa har chalan vaylaa aadee.
O’ my mortal friend, in the fourth watch of the night (old age), your time to depart from this world has arrived.
ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ-ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਚੋਥੇ ਹਿਸੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੂਚ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਸਭ ਚਲੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਦੀ ॥
kar sayvhu pooraa satguroo vanjaari-aa mitraa sabh chalee rain vihaadee.
O’ my merchant friend, serve the Perfect True Guru by following his teachings, your entire life-night is passing away.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਅਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਵੋ, (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਢਿਲ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਹੋਵਹੁ ॥
har sayvhu khin khin dhil mool na karihu jit asthir jug jug hovhu.
remember God at every moment, and do not delay this at all, so that you may become eternal (unite with God) through all the ages.
ਤੂੰ ਹਰ ਮੁਹਤ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਰੀ ਨਾਂ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਯੁਗਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਅਮਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਸਦ ਮਾਣਹੁ ਰਲੀਆ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਖੋਵਹੁ ॥
har saytee sad maanhu ralee-aa janam maran dukh khovhu.
In this way, you will enjoy eternal happiness in God’s company and be rid of the pains of birth and death.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ l
ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖਾਂਦੀ ॥
gur satgur su-aamee bhayd na jaanhu jit mil har bhagat sukhaaNdee.
Know that there is no difference between the God and the True Guru, in whose company, devotion to God gives true happiness.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ (ਰਤਾ ਭੀ) ਫ਼ਰਕ ਨਾਹ ਸਮਝੋ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਸਫਲਿਓੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਦੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩॥
kaho naanak paraanee cha-uthai pahrai safli-o rain bhagtaa dee. ||4||1||3||
Nanak says, fruitful is the night-life of God’s devotees.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਚੌਥੇ ਪਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ) ਰਾਤ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ

ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਧਰਿ ਪਾਇਤਾ ਉਦਰੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
pahilai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa Dhar paa-itaa udrai maahi.
O my merchant friend, in the first watch of the night-life, Creator placed your soul in the womb of your mother.
ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਹਿਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਸਜਣਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੇਟ ਅੰਦਰ ਧਰ ਦਿਤਾ
ਦਸੀ ਮਾਸੀ ਮਾਨਸੁ ਕੀਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
dasee maasee maanas kee-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa kar muhlat karam kamaahi.
O my merchant friend, in the tenth month, you were developed into a full human being, and you were given your allotted time to perform your deeds.
ਦਸਾਂ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਯਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਤਾ ਗਿਆ
ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਣੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
muhlat kar deenee karam kamaanay jaisaa likhat Dhur paa-i-aa.
You were given this time to perform your deeds, according to your pre-ordained destiny.
ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਪੁਰਬਲੀ ਲਿਖਤਾਕਾਰ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਅਉਸਰ ਦੇ ਦਿਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਤਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸੰਜੋਇਆ ॥
maat pitaa bhaa-ee sut banitaa tin bheetar parabhoo sanjo-i-aa.
God tied you in relationships with your mother, father, brother, son, and wife.
ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਭਰਾ, ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਤਨੀ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਕਰਮ ਸੁਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਇਸੁ ਜੰਤੈ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
karam sukaram karaa-ay aapay is jantai vas kichh naahi.
He Himself makes a person perform good or bad deeds, nothing is in control of this mortal.
ਇਸ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਇਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਧਰਿ ਪਾਇਤਾ ਉਦਰੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
kaho naanak paraanee pahilai pahrai Dhar paa-itaa udrai maahi. ||1||
Nanak says, O mortal, in the first watch of the life-night, the soul is placed in the womb.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਦੇ) ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪਹਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਪੈਤੜਾ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਭਰਿ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਲਹਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥
doojai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa bhar ju-aanee lahree day-ay.
In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the fullness of youth rises in you like waves.
ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਫੁਲਤ ਯੁਵਾ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਖੂਬ ਛੱਲਾਂ ਮਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਾ ਅਹੰਮੇਇ ॥
buraa bhalaa na pachhaan-ee vanjaari-aa mitraa man mataa ahamay-ay.
O my merchant friend, one does not distinguish between good and evil, the mind is intoxicated with ego.
ਹੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ! ਤਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਤਮੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਆਗੈ ਪੰਥੁ ਕਰਾਰਾ ॥
buraa bhalaa na pachhaanai paraanee aagai panth karaaraa.
Mortal does not distinguish between good and evil, and the road ahead is treacherous.
ਜੀਵ ਚੰਗੇ ਤੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਅਤੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਰਸਤਾ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰਾ ॥
pooraa satgur kabahooN na sayvi-aa sir thaadhay jam jandaaraa.
The mortal does not follow the teachings of the Perfect True Guru, and the cruel demons of death stand over his head.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਜਮ ਆ ਖਲੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਜਬ ਪਕਰਸਿ ਬਵਰੇ ਤਬ ਕਿਆ ਜਬਾਬੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Dharam raa-ay jab pakras bavray tab ki-aa jabaab karay-i.
The crazy one (doesn’t know what he is going to say in one’s defense),when the righteous Judge would catch hold and ask the account of one’s deeds.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਕਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ) ਝੱਲੇ ਹੋ ਚੁਕੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਦੋਂ ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਆ ਫੜੇਗਾ, ਤਦੋਂ (ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਮੰਦੀਆਂ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ?
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਲਹਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥੨॥
kaho naanak doojai pahrai paraanee bhar joban lahree day-ay. ||2||
Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night,the waves of prime youth mount in the mortal.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਸਿਖਰ ਤੇ ਪੁੰਹਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੋਬਨ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਉਛਾਲੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
teejai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa bikh sanchai anDh agi-aan.
O’ my merchant friend, in the third stage of your life (middle age), in blind ignorance you amass the poison (of worldly wealth).
ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਸਰੇ ਹਿਸੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਬੰਦਾ (ਧਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਇਕੱਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਪੁਤ੍ਰਿ ਕਲਤ੍ਰਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਲਪਟਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਲੋਭਾਨੁ ॥
putir kaltir mohi lapti-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa antar lahar lobhaan.
He is entangled in emotional attachment to his wife and sons, O my merchant friend, and deep within him, the waves of greed are rising up.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਤਨੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆ! ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਲਾਲਚ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਲਾਂ ਠਾਠਾਂ ਮਾਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਲੋਭਾਨੁ ਪਰਾਨੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
antar lahar lobhaan paraanee so parabh chit na aavai.
The waves of greed are rising up within him, and he does not remember God.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਮ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਰੰਗ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਅਰਾਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਆ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
saaDhsangat si-o sang na kee-aa baho jonee dukh paavai.
He does not join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and he suffers in terrible pain through countless incarnations.
ਉਹ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
sirjanhaar visaari-aa su-aamee ik nimakh na lago Dhi-aan.
He has forgotten the Creator, his Master, and he does not meditate on Him, even for an instant.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਰਚਣਹਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਛਡਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਦਾ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੇ ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak paraanee teejai pahrai bikh sanchay anDh agi-aan. ||3||
Nanak says in the third watch of the night the ignorant, foolish mortal gathers the poison (of worldly riches).
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ) ਰਾਤ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਪਹਰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਧਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਹੀ) ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
cha-uthai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa din nayrhai aa-i-aa so-ay.
In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, that day of death is drawingnear.
ਰਾਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਚੋਥੇ ਹਿਸੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੇ ਸੁਦਾਗਰ ਬੇਲੀਆਂ! ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਦਿਹਾੜਾ ਲਾਗੇ ਢੁਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੇਲੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
