ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is of Eternal Existence. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self-revealed. He is realized by the true Guru’s grace
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

Raag Soohee, First Guru, Four stanzas, First Beat:
ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧੋਇ ਬੈਸਿ ਧੂਪੁ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਤਉ ਦੂਧੈ ਕਉ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥
bhaaNdaa Dho-ay bais Dhoop dayvhu ta-o dooDhai ka-o jaavhu.
Just as a container is thoroughly washed and disinfected to receive milk, similarly to receive the nectar of Naam, the heart needs to be cleansed of all evils.
ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਨੂੰ ਧੂਪ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਤਦੋਂ ਦੁੱਧ ਲੈਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰੇ l
ਦੂਧੁ ਕਰਮ ਫੁਨਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਜਮਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥
dooDh karam fun surat samaa-in ho-ay niraas jamaavahu. ||1||
As yeast converts milk to yogurt, similarly staying attuned to Naam keeps us detached from the worldly allurements. ||1||.
ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੀ ਜਾਗ ਲਾਉੱਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮਤਾ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧ ॥
ਜਪਹੁ ਤ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥

O’ brother, Meditate only on God’s Name,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਪੋ।
ਅਵਰਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

as all other deeds (rituals or austerities) are useless efforts. ||1||Pause||
ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਈਟੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਉ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
ih man eetee haath karahu fun naytara-o need na aavai.
Control your mind and don’t let it fall into the slumber of worldly allurements, like you control the churning spindle with rope and its wooden handles.
ਨੇਤਰੇ ਦਿਆਂ ਈਟੀਆਂ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਮਧਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਂਗ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਈਟੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰੋ ਤਾਂਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਮਨ ਉੱਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨ ਪਾਏ ।
ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਬ ਮਥੀਐ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥
rasnaa naam japahu tab mathee-ai in biDh amrit paavhu. ||2||
As butter is obtained by churning yogurt, likewise recite Naam with your tongue while doing daily chores, this way you would attain ambrosial Naam. ||2||
ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, ਇਂਝ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ ਦੁੱਧ ਰਿੜਕੀਂਦਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ, ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਵੇਂਗਾ ॥੨॥
ਮਨੁ ਸੰਪਟੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਭਾਵਨ ਪਾਤੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥
man sampat jit sat sar naavan bhaavan paatee taripat karay.
Just as a priest keeps the god’s idol in a box and bathes it with water, similarly if one lets his mind be the abode for God, bathes his mind in the pool of the holy congregation and pleases God with the leaves of his love.
(ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਡੱਬੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਜੀਵ) ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਡੱਬਾ ਬਣਾਏ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖੇ) ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰੇ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੂੰ) ਸਰਧਾ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰੇ।
ਪੂਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੇ ਸੇਵੇ ਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਵਤੁ ਰਹੈ ॥੩॥
poojaa paraan sayvak jay sayvay inH biDh saahib ravat rahai. ||3||
In this way, the devotee who lovingly remembers God with the breath of his life, keeps enjoying His love. ||3||
ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਅੰਦਰ-ਵੱਸਦੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ (ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਹਦੇ ਕਹਹਿ ਕਹੇ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
kahday kaheh kahay kahi jaaveh tum sar avar na ko-ee.
People who just talk, they talk about Your praises and waste their life away, but O’ God! there is no parallel to recitation of your Name with adoration.
ਕਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ-ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ!
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਨੁ ਜੰਪੈ ਹਉ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥
bhagat heen naanak jan jampai ha-o saalaahee sachaa so-ee. ||4||1||
Devotee Nanak who is devoid of devotional worship prays that I may keep singing the praises of the eternal God. ||4||1||
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੪॥੧॥

ਰਾਗ ਸੂਹੀ, ਘਰ ੨ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
There is only one God who is realized by the grace of the True Guru.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਨ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
antar vasai na baahar jaa-ay.
One who understands that God is within, does not get engrossed in the unnecessary worldly desires.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਏ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ l
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੧॥
amrit chhod kaahay bikh khaa-ay. ||1||
Why should he forsake the ambrosial nectar of Naam and expose himself to the poison of worldly evils? ||1||
ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਖਾਂਏੇ? ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
aisaa gi-aan japahu man mayray.
O’ my mind, contemplate on such divine knowledge,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਨ! ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਰੱਬੀ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ,
ਹੋਵਹੁ ਚਾਕਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hovhu chaakar saachay kayray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
so that you can be the true devotee of the eternal God. ||1||Pause||
ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ (ਸੱਚਾ) ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣ ਸਕੇਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਰਵੈ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan sabh ko-ee ravai.
Everyone talks as if he knows everything about divine knowledge or meditation,
ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮਬੋਧ ਤੇ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਾਂਧਨਿ ਬਾਂਧਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਵੈ ॥੨॥
baaNDhan baaNDhi-aa sabh jag bhavai. ||2||
but the reality is that almost the entire world is roaming around tied in the bonds of Maya, the worldly riches and power. ||2||
ਪਰ (ਵੇਖਣ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭਟਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚਾਕਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sayvaa karay so chaakar ho-ay.
One who always remembers God with adoration becomes His true devotee,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
jal thal mahee-al rav rahi-aa so-ay. ||3||
and experiences God pervading the water, the land, and the sky. ||3||
ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹਮ ਨਹੀ ਚੰਗੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
ham nahee changay buraa nahee ko-ay.
One who understands that he is not better than anyone else and no one is worse than him,
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਮੈਥੋਂ ਮਾੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ,
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੨॥
paranvat naanak taaray so-ay. ||4||1||2||
Nanak submits, God ferries such a devotee across the worldly ocean of vices. ||4||1||2||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ- ਅਜੇਹੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਕਾਰ-ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੨॥
