ਅੰਤਿ ਸੰਗ ਕਾਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਦੀਨਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਆਪੁ ਬੰਧਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
ant sang kaahoo nahee deenaa birthaa aap banDhaa-i-aa. ||1||
None of these worldly things have accompanied anyone in the end, and you haveunnecessarily entrapped yourself in these worldly bonds. ||1||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਤੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਜਕੜ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਿਓ ਨ ਗੁਰ ਜਨੁ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਨਹ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਕਛੁ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
naa har bhaji-o na gur jan sayvi-o nah upji-o kachh gi-aanaa.
You neither mediated on God, nor followed the Guru’s teachings and divine wisdom has not welled up in you.
ਨਾਹ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਹੈਂ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ।
ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਤੈ ਖੋਜਤ ਉਦਿਆਨਾ ॥੨॥
ghat hee maahi niranjan tayrai tai khojat udi-aanaa. ||2||
The immaculate God dwells within your heart, but you have been searching for Him in wilderness. ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਤੂੰ (ਬਾਹਰ) ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੨॥
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਜਨਮ ਭਰਮਤ ਤੈ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
bahut janam bharmat tai haari-o asthir mat nahee paa-ee.
Wandering through so many lives, you have lost the game of life; you have not acquired wisdom to remain in equipoise for ending the cycle of birth and death.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਹਾਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਅਜੇਹੀ ਅਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ।
ਮਾਨਸ ਦੇਹ ਪਾਇ ਪਦ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਾਤ ਬਤਾਈ ॥੩॥੩॥
maanas dayh paa-ay pad har bhaj naanak baat bataa-ee. ||3||3||
O’ Nanak, the Guru has imparted this teaching, that now you have received this precious human body, you should remember God with adoration. |3||3|
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਾਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਉੱਚਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰ ॥੩॥੩॥

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਬਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
man ray parabh kee saran bichaaro.
O’ my mind, come to God’s refuge and remember Him with adoration.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਕਰ।
ਜਿਹ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਗਨਕਾ ਸੀ ਉਧਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jih simrat gankaa see uDhree taa ko jas ur Dhaaro. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Enshrine the praise of that God in your mind, meditating on whom even a prostitute like Ganika was emancipated. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਗਨਕਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਣੋਂ) ਬਚ ਗਈ ਸੀ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ, (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਟਲ ਭਇਓ ਧ੍ਰੂਅ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਅਰੁ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
atal bha-i-o Dharoo-a jaa kai simran ar nirbhai pad paa-i-aa.
By remembering whom the devotee Dhruv became immortal and received the status of fearlessness,
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨਿਰਭੈਤਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ,
ਦੁਖ ਹਰਤਾ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੈ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਸਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
dukh hartaa ih biDh ko su-aamee tai kaahay bisraa-i-aa. ||1||
Why have you forsaken that God from your mind, who is the destroyer of these kind of sorrows? ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਗਹੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਗਜ ਗਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਛੂਟਾ ॥
jab hee saran gahee kirpaa niDh gaj garaah tay chhootaa.
When the mythical elephant-Gaj cried for help and took to the refuge of God, the ocean of mercy, he escaped from the crocodile.
ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੀ (ਗਜ ਨੇ) ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਉਹ ਗਜ (ਹਾਥੀ) ਤੰਦੂਏ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਕਲ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਮਹਮਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਲਉ ਬਰਨਉ ਰਾਮ ਕਹਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਤਿਹ ਤੂਟਾ ॥੨॥
mahmaa naam kahaa la-o barna-o raam kahat banDhan tih tootaa. ||2||
How much can I describe the glory of Naam? Uttering the Name of the all pervading God, the bonds of that elephant-Gaj were broken. ||2||
ਮੈਂ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਤਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੱਸਾਂ? ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ (ਹਾਥੀ) ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਟੁੱਟ ਗਏ ਸਨ ॥੨॥
ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਨੇ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥
ajaamal paapee jag jaanay nimakh maahi nistaaraa.
Ajamall, who was known as a sinner throughout the entire world, he was saved in a moment by remembering God with adoration.
ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਜਾਮਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਸੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਇਕ ਮੁਹਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਰ-ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਤ ਚੇਤ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ ਤੈ ਭੀ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥੪॥
naanak kahat chayt chintaaman tai bhee utreh paaraa. ||3||4||
Nanak says, meditate on God, the wish-fulfilling jewel, so that you are also ferried across this dreadful worldly ocean of vices. ||3||4||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਚਿਤਵਨੀਆਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ, ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ ॥੩॥੪॥

ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਉਨੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਕਰੈ ॥
paraanee ka-un upaa-o karai.
What kind of efforts should one make,
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਹੀਲਾ ਕਰੇ,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਤ੍ਰਾਸੁ ਹਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa tay bhagat raam kee paavai jam ko taraas harai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
to receive the devotional worship of the all pervading God and be able to eradicate the fear of death? ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ; ਅਤੇ ਜਮ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਉਨੁ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਰਈ ॥
ka-un karam bidi-aa kaho kaisee Dharam ka-un fun kar-ee.
What deeds, what knowledge, and what other deeds of righteousness one can practice?
ਉਹ ਕੇਹੜੇ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਧਰਮ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਕਰੇ;
ਕਉਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰ ਕਉ ਤਰਈ ॥੧॥
ka-un naam gur jaa kai simrai bhav saagar ka-o tar-ee. ||1||
What is that Naam blessed by the Guru, by meditating on which one may swim across this dreadful worldly ocean of vices? ||1||
ਉਹ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ (ਦੱਸਿਆ) ਨਾਮ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਕਲ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜਪੈ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kal mai ayk naam kirpaa niDh jaahi japai gat paavai.
God’s Name alone is the treasure of mercy in this world, meditating on which one receives the supreme spiritual status.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰਜਪਕੇਮਨੁੱਖਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਉਰ ਧਰਮ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਮ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
a-or Dharam taa kai sam naahan ih biDh bayd bataavai. ||2||
No other deeds of righteousness are equal to meditating on Naam, the Vedas (scriptures of the Hindus) tell us this. ||2||
ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਕਰਮ ਉਸ (ਨਾਮ) ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ-ਬੇਦ (ਭੀ) ਇਹ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਰਹਤ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਲੇਪੀ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਹਤ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
sukh dukh rahat sadaa nirlaypee jaa ka-o kahat gusaa-ee.
God who is known as the Master of the universe is beyond any pain or pleasure and always remains detached from Maya.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਜਗਤ) ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਖਸਮ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਪਨਿ ਨਿਆਈ ॥੩॥੫॥
so tum hee meh basai nirantar naanak darpan ni-aa-ee. ||3||5||
O Nanak, God always dwells within you, like the image in a mirror. ||3||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭੀ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਕਸ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।॥੩॥੫॥

O’ my mother, how can I recognize God, the Master of the universe?
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਛਾਣਾਂ?
ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਤਿਮਰਿ ਮੋ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਿਓ ਉਰਝਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mahaa moh agi-aan timar mo man rahi-o urjhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Because my mind is entangled in the intense worldly attachments and pitch darkness of spiritual ignorance. ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ (ਤਾਂ) ਵੱਡੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਗਲ ਜਨਮ ਭਰਮ ਹੀ ਭਰਮ ਖੋਇਓ ਨਹ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
sagal janam bharam hee bharam kho-i-o nah asthir mat paa-ee.
I have wasted away all my life in one doubt after the other, and have never obtained such wisdom which may keep my mind stable.
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਨਮ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। (ਅਜੇ ਤਕ ਅਜੇਹੀ) ਮਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ (ਜੋ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਅਡੋਲ ਰੱਖ ਸਕੇ।
ਬਿਖਿਆਸਕਤ ਰਹਿਓ ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਨਹ ਛੂਟੀ ਅਧਮਾਈ ॥੧॥
bikhi-aaskat rahi-o nis baasur nah chhootee aDhmaa-ee. ||1||
Day and night I remain engrossed in worldly riches and power and I have not been able to renounce my wickedness. ||1||
ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੰਪਟ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਨੀਚਤਾ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ ॥੧॥
ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਨਾ ਨਹ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਾਈ ॥
saaDhsang kabhoo nahee keenaa nah keerat parabh gaa-ee.
I never joined the holy congregation nor did I ever sing the praises of God.
ਮੈਂ ਕਦੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ, ਮੈਂ ਕਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਗੀਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਾਇਆ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਗੁਨੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥੨॥੬॥
jan naanak mai naahi ko-oo gun raakh layho sarnaa-ee. ||2||6||
O’ Nanak, I have no virtues at all; O’ God! keep me in Your refuge. ||2||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ;ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ॥੨॥੬॥

ਮਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰੋ ਬਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
maa-ee man mayro bas naahi.
O’ my mother, my mind is not under my control.
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਤ ਕਿਹਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੋਕਉ ਤਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nis baasur bikhi-an ka-o Dhaavat kihi biDh roka-o taahi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Day and night, it runs after poisonous worldly riches and power. How can I restrain it? ||1||Pause||
ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੋਕਾਂ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਕੇ ਮਤ ਸੁਨਿ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਹੀਏ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
bayd puraan simrit kay mat sun nimakh na hee-ay basaavai.
Even after listening to the teachings of Vedas, Puranas, and Smritis (scriptures), one doesn’t enshrine these teachings in his heart even for an instant.
ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ।
ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਦਾਰਾ ਸਿਉ ਰਚਿਓ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
par Dhan par daaraa si-o rachi-o birthaa janam siraavai. ||1||
He remains engrossed in thoughts about others’ wealth and women, and in that way he spends all his life in vain. ||1||
ਪਰਾਏ ਧਨ, ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ) ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਭਇਓ ਬਾਵਰੋ ਸੂਝਤ ਨਹ ਕਛੁ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
mad maa-i-aa kai bha-i-o baavro soojhat nah kachh gi-aanaa.
Being intoxicated with Maya, he has gone insane and does not even understand a bit of spiritual wisdom.
ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ।
ਘਟ ਹੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸਤ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
ghat hee bheetar basat niranjan taa ko maram na jaanaa. ||2||
The immaculate God resides within the heart itself, but he doesn’t understand this secrete. ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਭੇਦ ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ॥੨॥
