ਸਾਚਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਘਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ॥
saach sahj sobhaa ghanee har gun naam aDhaar.
By making God’s Name as their main support, they will be able to obtain truth, tranquility and great glory in God’s court.
ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜਿਆਂ) ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ (ਟਿਕਿਆਂ) ਬੜੀ ਸੋਭਾ (ਭੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
ji-o bhaavai ti-o rakh tooN mai tujh bin kavan bhataar. ||3||
O’ God, save us (from the worldly temptations) in whatever way it pleases You, without You, we have no other Master.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ। ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਖਸਮ-ਸਾਈਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ l
ਅਖਰ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਭੇਖੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
akhar parh parh bhulee-ai bhaykhee bahut abhimaan.
By continually reading religious books, people are lost in false beliefs. They take great pride in wearing diverse religious garbs.
ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਵਾਚ ਕੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਜ਼ਹਬੀ ਲਿਬਾਸਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਘਣਾ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
tirath naataa ki-aa karay man meh mail gumaan.
Yet what is the use of bathing at the holy places when one’s mind is filled with the dirt of ego?
ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਇਸ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥੪॥
gur bin kin samjaa-ee-ai man raajaa sultaan. ||4||
Without the Guru who can convey the true understanding to the mind, who (in ego) thinks itself as the supreme master over the body.
ਮਨ (ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰੀ ਦਾ) ਰਾਜਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਿਆ)
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
paraym padaarath paa-ee-ai gurmukh tat veechaar.
The wealth of God’s love is obtained by reflecting on the essence of the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
saa Dhan aap gavaa-i-aa gur kai sabad seegaar.
Such a bride-soul sheds her egotism by decorating herself with the Guru’s word.
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨਵਿਰਤ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਘਰ ਹੀ ਸੋ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
ghar hee so pir paa-i-aa gur kai hayt apaar. ||5||
Through the unlimited (divine) love bestowed by the Guru, she finds the Creator in her own heart.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur kee sayvaa chaakree man nirmal sukh ho-ay.
By serving the Guru and following His advice, the mind is purified from the vices and peace is obtained.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਖੋਇ ॥
gur kaa sabad man vasi-aa ha-umai vichahu kho-ay.
When the Guru’s word is enshrined in the mind, egotism is eliminated from within.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
naam padaarath paa-i-aa laabh sadaa man ho-ay. ||6||
Then a person acquires the wealth of Naam, and in this way the mind always earns the spiritual bliss.
ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੀ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਲਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
karam milai taa paa-ee-ai aap na la-i-aa jaa-ay.
It is only by God’s grace that Naam is obtained: it cannot be obtained by one’s own efforts.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਉਦਮ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਗਿ ਰਹੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
gur kee charnee lag rahu vichahu aap gavaa-ay.
Therefore, get rid of your ego and keep following the Guru’s advice.
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ, ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੁ।
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੭॥
sachay saytee rati-aa sacho palai paa-ay. ||7||
Attuned to Truth, you shall obtain the True One.
ਗੁਰ-ਸਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਜੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਭੁਲਣ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
bhulan andar sabh ko abhul guroo kartaar.
Everyone is prone to making mistakes; only the Guru and the Creator are infallible.
ਸਾਰੇ ਗਲਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਅਚੂਕ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
gurmat man samjhaa-i-aa laagaa tisai pi-aar.
Whoever has trained his mind based on Guru’s teachings, develops the love for God.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧੨॥
naanak saach na veesrai maylay sabad apaar. ||8||12||
O’ Nanak, whom the Guru’s word unites with the infinite God, that person never forgets the Eternal (God)
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਪਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਦੇ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ

Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਘਰ ਨਾਰਿ ॥
tarisnaa maa-i-aa mohnee sut banDhap ghar naar.
The enticing desire for Maya leads people to become emotionally attached to their children, relatives, households and spouses.
ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ, ਘਰ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਧਨਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਲਬਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥
Dhan joban jag thagi-aa lab lobh ahaNkaar.
The desire for worldly wealth, youth (beauty), lust, greed and pride has cheated the entire world.
ਧਨ ਨੇ, ਜੁਆਨੀ ਨੇ, ਲੋਭ ਨੇ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੇ, (ਸਾਰੇ) ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਲੁੱਟ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਹਉ ਮੁਈ ਸਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
moh thag-ulee ha-o mu-ee saa vartai sansaar. ||1||
The intoxication of emotional attachment to Maya has destroyed me, as it has destroyed the whole world.
ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਠੱਗਬੂਟੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਭੀ) ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਮੋਹ-ਠੱਗਬੂਟੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ l
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
mayray pareetamaa mai tujh bin avar na ko-ay.
O’ my Beloved, I have no one except You (who can save me from Maya)
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਇਸ ਠੱਗ-ਬੂਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਣ ਲਈ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਸਮਰੱਥ) ਨਹੀਂ (ਦਿੱਸਦਾ)।
ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਤੂੰ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mai tujh bin avar na bhaav-ee tooN bhaaveh sukh ho-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without You, nothing else is pleasing to me. Only when I love You, I am at peace.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥
naam saalaahee rang si-o gur kai sabad santokh.
Having acquired contentment by Guru’s instruction, I praise God’s Name with love!
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਸਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਕੂੜਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਵੇਖੁ ॥
jo deesai so chalsee koorhaa moh na vaykh.
Whatever is seen shall pass away. So do not be attached to this false show.
ਇਸ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਮੋਹ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਵੇਖ, ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਕੁੱਝ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ।
ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਊ ਆਇਆ ਨਿਤ ਚਲਦਾ ਸਾਥੁ ਦੇਖੁ ॥੨॥
vaat vataa-oo aa-i-aa nit chaldaa saath daykh. ||2||
You have come in this world like a traveller. You can see that your company is passing away each day (and so will you one day)
(ਜੀਵ ਇਥੇ) ਰਸਤੇ ਦਾ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਿਰ (ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਿੱਤ ਚਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝ l
ਆਖਣਿ ਆਖਹਿ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
aakhan aakhahi kayt-rhay gur bin boojh na ho-ay.
Many preach sermons, but without the Guru, understanding is not obtained.
ਦੱਸਣ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵ ਦੱਸ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਇਉਂ ਬਚ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਹੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਪੈ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam vadaa-ee jay milai sach rapai pat ho-ay.
But if one receives the blessing of God’s Name (through the Guru), one is imbued with truth and obtains true honor.
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ, ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਖੋਟਾ ਖਰਾ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
jo tuDh bhaaveh say bhalay khotaa kharaa na ko-ay. ||3||
O’ God, they alone are good who are pleasing to you. On one’s own saying nobody is good or bad.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹੀ ਭਲੇ ਹਨ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ) ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹ ਖਰਾ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਖੋਟਾ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
gur sarnaa-ee chhutee-ai manmukh khotee raas.
We can only be saved (from the vices) in Guru’s shelter, a self-willed person always collects false wealth.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੀਦੀ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਖੋਟੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੀ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ
ਅਸਟ ਧਾਤੁ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਕੀ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਗਾਸਿ ॥
asat Dhaat paatisaah kee gharhee-ai sabad vigaas.
The human body, created by God with eight elements, becomes spiritually enlightened when molded by the Guru’s word.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਇਹ ਅੱਠ ਧਾਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਕਾਂਇਆਂ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਘੜੀ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਹੁਲਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖੇ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਪਵੈ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੪॥
aapay parkhay paarkhoo pavai khajaanai raas. ||4||
And God Himself examines the human souls, He accepts the virtuous ones, and unites them with Himself.
ਪਰਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਿਕਿਆਂ (ਜੀਵਾ) ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅਸਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਸਭ ਡਿਠੀ ਠੋਕਿ ਵਜਾਇ ॥

ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਤਜਰਬਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕਹਣੈ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਸਚਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
kahnai haath na labh-ee sach tikai pat paa-ay.
Just by saying the depth of Your virtues cannot be found. Those who have faith in You have obtained honor,
ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਥਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ। ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਸੱਚ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸ ਜਾਵੇ, ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
gurmat tooN salaahnaa hor keemat kahan na jaa-ay. ||5||
The Guru’s teaching is that mortals should praise You, and acknowledge that Your worth or limit cannot be described.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਦਰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਾਦੁ ॥
jit tan naam na bhaav-ee tit tan ha-umai vaad.
The person who does not praise the Naam is infested with ego and strife.
ਜਿਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ, ਉਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਬਖੇੜਾ ਵਧਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਾਦੁ ॥
gur bin gi-aan na paa-ee-ai bikhi-aa doojaa saad.
Without the Guru, spiritual wisdom is not obtained, and the mind begins craving for the poison of Maya.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਹੋਰ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਿਰੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ। ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਫੀਕਾ ਸਾਦੁ ॥੬॥
bin gun kaam na aavee maa-i-aa feekaa saad. ||6||
Without spiritual merits nothing else will help, even the pleasures of Maya will taste insipid.
ਨੇਕੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਕੁਝ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਣਾ। ਫਿਕਾ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਦ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਦਾ।
ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਆਸਾ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਇ ॥
aasaa andar jammi-aa aasaa ras kas khaa-ay.
A human being is born because of the desires of previous birth, and in this birth also experiences the good and bad results of the desires.
ਜੀਵ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਬੱਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦ ਤਕ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਸਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਹੀ (ਮਿੱਠੇ) ਕਸੈਲੇ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਰਸਾਂ (ਵਾਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
aasaa banDh chalaa-ee-ai muhay muhi chotaa khaa-ay.
Bound down by desires, he is driven away from this world where he faces severe punishment.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਥੋਂ ਤੋਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਮੂੰਹ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਵਗਣਿ ਬਧਾ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੭॥
avgan baDhaa maaree-ai chhootai gurmat naa-ay. ||7||
Trapped in vices he lives sinful life and suffers, it is only by following the Guru’s teachings he can find release from the vices.
ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ ਬੱਧਾ ਮਾਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ (ਆਸਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
