ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ ॥l
man ray ki-o chhooteh bin pi-aar.
O’ my mind, you cannot be saved (from the vices) without the love for God.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ) ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਖਸੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh antar rav rahi-aa bakhsay bhagat bhandaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God dwells in the heart of Guru’s followers and they are blessed with the treasure of devotion.
ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਮਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਨੀਰ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee machhulee neer.
O’ my mind, you should love God, like fish loves water.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰ, ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਮੱਛੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਅਧਿਕਉ ਤਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
ji-o aDhika-o ti-o sukh ghano man tan saaNt sareer.
More the water, happier the fish is, and it gives greater comfort to her body and peace of mind.
ਪਾਣੀ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਹੈ, ਮੱਛੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਸੁਖ-ਆਨੰਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਠੰਡ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਭ ਪੀਰ ॥੨॥
bin jal gharhee na jeev-ee parabh jaanai abh peer. ||2||
But without water, fish cannot live even for a moment and God knows the pain of her separation.
ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਭੀ ਜੀਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ। ਮੱਛੀ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਵੇਦਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਆਪ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਮੇਹ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee chaatrik mayh.
O my mind, love the God, as the song-bird loves the rain.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕਰ, ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਪਪੀਹੇ ਦੀ ਮੀਂਹ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਸਰ ਭਰਿ ਥਲ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਕੇਹ ॥
sar bhar thal haree-aavlay ik boond na pav-ee kayh.
Even if all the pools are filled with water, and the land is blossoming in green, they are of no use to the song-bird if that raindrop does not fall in its mouth.
ਜੇਕਰ ਮੀਹ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਕਣੀ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਾਂ ਪਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਲਬਾਲਬ ਭਰੇ ਤਲਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਸਬਜ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ?
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੇਹ ॥੩॥
karam milai so paa-ee-ai kirat pa-i-aa sir dayh. ||3||
One unites with God only through His grace, otherwise one’s body and soul has to endure the results of past deeds.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਪੂਰਬਲਾ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਝੱਲਣਾ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਜਲ ਦੁਧ ਹੋਇ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee jal duDh ho-ay.
O my mind you should love the God like water loves the milk.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਪਾ ਜੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਦੁਧ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਆਵਟਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਖਵੈ ਦੁਧ ਕਉ ਖਪਣਿ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥
aavtan aapay khavai duDh ka-o khapan na day-ay.
When heated, the water bears the heat and it does not let the milk burn.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਪਾਣੀ-ਰਲੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਉੱਤੇ ਰੱਖੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਉਬਾਲਾ (ਪਾਣੀ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁੱਧ ਨੂੰ ਸੜਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ।
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ਸਚਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥
aapay mayl vichhunni-aa sach vadi-aa-ee day-ay. ||4||
God unites the separated ones with Himself, and blesses them with true glory.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਿਛੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਮਾਣ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee chakvee soor.
O’ my mind, have such a love for God as the chakwi duck has for the sun.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰ, ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਚਕਵੀ ਦਾ (ਪਿਆਰ) ਸੂਰਜ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
khin pal need na sov-ee jaanai door hajoor.
She (Chakwi duck) does not sleep even for a moment (at night), thinking the sun is very near whereas it is very far away.
ਇਕ ਲੰਮ੍ਹੇ ਭਰ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਨੀਦ੍ਰ ਵਸ ਸੌਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਰੇਡੇ (ਸੂਰਜ ਨੂੰ) ਇਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਐਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਜਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ।.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥੫॥
manmukh sojhee naa pavai gurmukh sadaa hajoor. ||5||
But the self-willed person never understands (this kind of love), while Guru’s followers always feel the presence of God with them.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁੱਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾ ਵਣੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
manmukh ganat ganaavanee kartaa karay so ho-ay.
The self-willed person tries to show off counting his so called great deeds, but whatever Creator does that happens.
ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਗਿਣਤੀਆਂ ਗਿਣਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai jay lochai sabh ko-ay.
God’s worth cannot be estimated, even though all men may desire it.
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਣੇ ਪਏ ਇੱਛਾ ਕਰਨ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੁਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
gurmat ho-ay ta paa-ee-ai sach milai sukh ho-ay. ||6||
It is only through Guru’s teachings that we realize Him, and it is only by merging in the true God, that we find peace.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ) ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇ। (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
sachaa nayhu na tut-ee jay satgur bhaytai so-ay.
If we meet the true Guru, he will help us to develop such a true love for God that it will never break.
ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਣ ਤਾਂ ਸਚੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁਟਦੀ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
gi-aan padaarath paa-ee-ai taribhavan sojhee ho-ay.
Through Guru’s guidance we obtain divine knowledge and gain insight into all the three worlds.
ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ ਗਿਆਤ ਦੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਜਹਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥
nirmal naam na veesrai jay gun kaa gaahak ho-ay. ||7||
If a person becomes a buyer of merits (of God), he or she will never forget His pure, immaculate Name.
ਜੇਕਰ ਬੰਦਾ ਨੇਕੀ ਦਾ ਖਰੀਦਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁਲਦਾ।
ਖੇਲਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਖਣੂੰ ਜੋ ਚੁਗਦੇ ਸਰ ਤਲਿ ॥
khayl ga-ay say paNkh-nooN jo chugday sar tal.
Like birds who come to peck near the pool of water and then fly away, similarly, humans in this world are guests for a short time
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਛੀ ਇਸ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਸਰੋਵਰ ਉੱਤੇ (ਚੋਗ) ਚੁਗਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਵਨ-) ਖੇਡ ਖੇਡ ਕੇ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।.
ਘੜੀ ਕਿ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਅਜੁ ਕਿ ਕਲਿ ॥
gharhee ke muhat ke chalnaa khaylan aj ke kal.
Everybody has to depart from this world in a short time after playing their role for a day or two.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਛੀ ਨੇ ਘੜੀ ਪਲ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਖੇਡ ਕੇ ਇਥੋਂ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਖੇਡ ਇਕ ਦੋ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਚਾ ਪਿੜੁ ਮਲਿ ॥੮॥
jis tooN mayleh so milai jaa-ay sachaa pirh mal. ||8||
Only with Your blessings one can unite with You and will get a seat in the Arena of Truth.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਥੋਂ ਸੱਚੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin gur pareet na oopjai ha-umai mail na jaa-ay.
Without (the guidance of) Guru, true love for God does not develop, and the dirt of ego doesn’t go away.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਉਤਪੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਸੋਹੰ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
sohaN aap pachhaanee-ai sabad bhayd patee-aa-ay.
When one feels completely satisfied through the Guru’s word, then one realizes that God within himself.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਵਰ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
gurmukh aap pachhaanee-ai avar ke karay karaa-ay. ||9||
Only through the Guru’s guidance we obtain self-realization, what more is there left to door have done?
ਜਦ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਹੋਰ ਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਜਾਂ ਕਰਾਉਣਾ ਬਾਕੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
mili-aa kaa ki-aa maylee-ai sabad milay patee-aa-ay.
Those who unite with God after having been satiated by the Guru’s word, there is no need to unite them again because they are never separated.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਜਾਏ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
manmukh sojhee naa pavai veechhurh chotaa khaa-ay.
However, the self- willed person does not understand this; having been separated from God, such a person keeps on suffering.
ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜ ਕੇ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥੧੧॥
naanak dar ghar ayk hai avar na doojee jaa-ay. ||10||11||
O’ Nanak, for a human being, there is but one door to seek, and no other place.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ (ਦਿੱਸਦਾ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ

Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਭੂਲੀ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਇ ॥
manmukh bhulai bhulaa-ee-ai bhoolee tha-ur na kaa-ay.
The self-willed soul bride is gone astray from the right path and finds no place of rest.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ) ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਰਾਹੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਵਈ ਅੰਧੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur bin ko na dikhaava-ee anDhee aavai jaa-ay.
Without Guru, nobody can show her the right path, blinded by the worldly vices, she keeps wandering.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ (ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ) ਵਿਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
gi-aan padaarath kho-i-aa thagi-aa muthaa jaa-ay. ||1||
Those who have lost spiritual wisdom due to the worldly vices, they depart cheated and deceived.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਢਹੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ-ਗਿਆਤ ਦੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਗੁਆ ਕੇ, ਆਦਮੀ ਲੁਟਿਆ ਪੁਟਿਆ ਟੁਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
baabaa maa-i-aa bharam bhulaa-ay.
My friend, it is Maya (worldly temptations) which deceives us with its illusion.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਪਿਰ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bharam bhulee dohaaganee naa pir ank samaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The unfortunate bride (soul) who gets lost in this illusion cannot unite with her Husband-God.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਭਾਗ ਹੀਣ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਕਦੇ ਭੀ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ
ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
bhoolee firai disantree bhoolee garihu taj jaa-ay.
The conceited soul-bride, abandoning her own home (her inner-self), wanders in all kinds of risky rituals, and cults, as if lost in foreign lands.
ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸਾਂਤਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭੂਲੀ ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਥਲਿ ਚੜੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
bhoolee doongar thal charhai bharmai man dolaa-ay.
Being lost from the right path, the soul-bride climbs the mountains (performs pilgrimages and other rituals) but her mind is always wavering in doubt.
ਸ਼ੱਕ ਸ਼ੁਭੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਡਿਕਡੋਲੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਰਾਹੋਂ ਘੁਸ ਕੇ ਉਚੇ ਮੈਦਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਹਾੜੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
Dharahu vichhunnee ki-o milai garab muthee billaa-ay. ||2||
Separated from the Primal Being by His command, she cannot unite with Him. Therefore, deluded by her self-conceit, she wails.
ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਛੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ, ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੁੱਟੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕਲਪਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
vichhurhi-aa gur maylsee har ras naam pi-aar.
The Guru will unite the separated ones with God by imbuing them with the bliss of God’s Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ, ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਮੁੜ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
