ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
janam janam kay kilbikh dukh kaatay aapay mayl milaa-ee. rahaa-o.
The sins and sorrows of their countless lifetimes are eradicated and God unites them with Himself ||Pause ||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਪ ਕੱਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਇਹੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਭੁ ਜੀਅ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਭਾਈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾ ਸੈਂਸਾਰਾ ॥
ih kutamb sabh jee-a kay banDhan bhaa-ee bharam bhulaa saiNsaaraa.
O‘ brother, all these worldly relatives are like bondage for the soul; the world is deluded by doubt.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਭੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਨਿਰਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਹਿਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੰਧਨ ਟੂਟਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥
bin gur banDhan tooteh naahee gurmukh mokh du-aaraa.
Without the Guru’s teachings, these bonds cannot be broken; only by following the Guru’s teachings one finds liberation from the worldly bonds.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਬੰਧਨ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
karam karahi gur sabad na pachhaaneh mar janmeh vaaro vaaraa. ||2||
Those who pursue worldly affairs without following the Guru’s teachings, are caught in the cycle of birth and death. ||2||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ-ਧੰਧੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ, ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਹਉ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਗੁ ਪਲਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਕੇਰਾ ॥
ha-o mayraa jag palach rahi-aa bhaa-ee ko-ay na kis hee kayraa.
O’ brother, the world is caught in selfishness and ego, and no one truly cares for the other.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਗਤ ਮੈਂ-ਮੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਲਝਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥
gurmukh mahal paa-in gun gaavan nij ghar ho-ay basayraa.
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings and sing God’s praises, they spiritually dwell in His presence.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ,ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਐਥੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
aithai boojhai so aap pachhaanai har parabh hai tis kayraa. ||3||
One who understands this secret while living in this world and realizes his own self, God remains that person’s helper throughout. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਈ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਈ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
satguroo sadaa da-i-aal hai bhaa-ee vin bhaagaa ki-aa paa-ee-ai.
O’ brother, the true Guru is forever merciful; but without destiny, what could one receive from the Guru?
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੀ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੀਹ ਮਿਲੇ?
ਏਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਜੇਹਾ ਭਾਉ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
ayk nadar kar vaykhai sabh oopar jayhaa bhaa-o tayhaa fal paa-ee-ai.
The Guru showers his grace equally upon all; but we receive the reward amount of grace in accordance with the depth of our love for him
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਫਲ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੪॥੬॥
naanak naam vasai man antar vichahu aap gavaa-ee-ai. ||4||6||
O’ Nanak, when we eradicate self-conceit from within, then we realize God residing in our mind. ||4||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲਈਏ, ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੬॥

ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚੀ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
sachee bhagat satgur tay hovai sachee hirdai banee.
It is only from the true Guru that one receives the gift of devotional worship, and the divine words of God’s praises are enshrined in the heart.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ,ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
satgur sayvay sadaa sukh paa-ay ha-umai sabad samaanee.
One who follows the true Guru ‘s teachings, receives eternal peace and his ego is eradicated through the Guru’s word.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਹੋਰ ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਇਆਣੀ ॥
bin gur saachay bhagat na hovee hor bhoolee firai i-aanee.
The devotional worship cannot be performed without the true Guru’s teachings; without it the world wanders around in ignorance.
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਇੰਞਾਣ-ਪੁਣੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਰਾਹੇ ਪਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
manmukh fireh sadaa dukh paavahi doob mu-ay vin paanee. ||1||
The self-willed persons wander around; they always suffer, as if they drowned without water and died. (1)
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਡੁੱਬ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
bhaa-ee ray sadaa rahhu sarnaa-ee.
O’ brother, forever remain in the Guru’s refuge.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੁ।
ਆਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aapnee nadar karay pat raakhai har naamo day vadi-aa-ee. rahaa-o.
Bestowing His grace, the Guru protects his honor and blesses greatness through God’s Name. ||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇਕ ਵੱਡੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ ॥ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
pooray gur tay aap pachhaataa sabad sachai veechaaraa.
One who reflects on his spiritual life through the perfect Guru; starts reflecting on the divine virtues by attuning to the divine words of God ‘s praises.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਦ ਵਸਿਆ ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
hirdai jagjeevan sad vasi-aa taj kaam kroDh ahaNkaaraa.
By renouncing the lust, anger, egotism etc. he realizes God, the life of the world, ever residing in His heart.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰ) ਤਿਆਗਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਆ ਵੱਸਿਆ।
ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
sadaa hajoor ravi-aa sabh thaa-ee hirdai naam apaaraa.
With the infinite God’s Name enshrined within the heart, he experiences God’s presence with him and everywhere.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਿਆ।
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀ ਨਾਉ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੨॥
jug jug banee sabad pachhaanee naa-o meethaa maneh pi-aaraa. ||2||
He recognizes that throughout the ages, the Guru’s word is the only way to unite with God and therefore, Naam seems sweet to his mind. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਪਛਾਣ ਆ ਗਈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ॥੨॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
satgur sayv jin naam pachhaataa safal janam jag aa-i-aa.
Successful is that person’s advent into this world, who realizes Naam by following the true Guru’s teachings.
ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਗਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ।
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣੀ ਅਘਾਇਆ ॥
har ras chaakh sadaa man taripti-aa gun gaavai gunee aghaa-i-aa.
His mind becomes satiated for ever by relishing the nectar of God’s Name; he keeps singing God’s praises and feels satiated from worldly riches and power.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਮਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥
kamal pargaas sadaa rang raataa anhad sabad vajaa-i-aa.
He always remains imbued with God’s love and his heart blooms in happiness, as if a non-stop melody of divine music is vibrating in His heart.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕਮਲ ਖਿੜ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
tan man nirmal nirmal banee sachay sach samaa-i-aa. ||3||
His mind and body become immaculate through the immaculate words of the Guru, and he remains absorbed in the eternal God. ||3||
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
raam naam kee gat ko-ay na boojhai gurmat ridai samaa-ee.
No one knows the glory of God’s Name; Its presence in the mind is realized by the intelect imparted by the Guru.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ; ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਮਗੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਈ ॥
gurmukh hovai so mag pachhaanai har ras rasan rasaa-ee.
One who becomes the Guru’s follower, understands the Path to God; his tongue savors the sublime essence of Naam.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ) ਰਸਤਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਨਾਲ ਰਸ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
jap tap sanjam sabh gur tay hovai hirdai naam vasaa-ee.
Meditation, austerity and self-discipline are all received from the Guru; presence of Naam in the heart is realized through the Guru’s teachings.
ਜਪ, ਤਪ,ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਮੂਹ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੭॥
naanak naam samaaleh say jan sohan dar saachai pat paa-ee. ||4||7||
O’ Nanak, the devotees who enshrine God’s Name in their heart, look beauteous and receive honor in the presence of eternal God. ||4||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੭॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਉਲਟੀ ਭਈ ਭਾਈ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਬੂਝ ਪਾਇ ॥
satgur mili-ai ultee bha-ee bhaa-ee jeevat marai taa boojh paa-ay.
O’ brother, one’s intellect turns away from the vices by meeting and following the Guru’s teachings; but one receives this understanding only when one becomes detached from the world while still living in it.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਰਤ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਛੋਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
so guroo so sikh hai bhaa-ee jis jotee jot milaa-ay. ||1||
O’ my brothers, the one (who gives such an understanding) is the Guru, and the one (who understands this thing) is the Sikh, whose (soul) light (God) unites with His (own prime soul or) Light. ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਅਸਲ) ਸਿੱਖ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
man ray har har saytee liv laa-ay.
O’ my mind, be lovingly attuned to God.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ।
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਥਾਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man har jap meethaa laagai bhaa-ee gurmukh paa-ay har thaa-ay. rahaa-o.
O’ my mind, by always meditating on God, we start loving God: O’ brother, the one who follows the Guru’s teachings finds a place in the presence of God. ||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਪ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ (ਥਾਂ) ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਰਹਾਉ॥
