ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਨ ਤੋਲੀਐ ਕਥਨਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
saahib atul na tolee-ai kathan na paa-i-aa jaa-ay. ||5||
God is unassessable, cannot be assessed and cannot be realized by mere talks.
ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ (ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ) ਨੂੰ ਤੋਲਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਉਹ ਤੋਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ l ਉਹ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ l
ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਆਏ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ॥
vaapaaree vanjaari-aa aa-ay vajahu likhaa-ay.
All Human beings come in this world with a pre-ordained number of breaths, just as a peddler comes to a city with the pre authorized capital.
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ-ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ- ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਸ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਰੋਜ਼ੀਨਾ ਲਿਖਾ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਲਾਹਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
kaar kamaaveh sach kee laahaa milai rajaa-ay.
They, who do the deeds of truth (meditate on God’s Name), earn the wealth of Naam as per God’s will.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਲਾਭ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
poonjee saachee gur milai naa tis til na tamaa-ay. ||6||
However, the true wealth of Naam is obtained only by those who meet the Guru, and they don’t have even an iota of personal desire or greed.
ਇਹ ਲਾਭ ਉਹੀ ਖੱਟ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਭੀ ਲਾਲਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋੁਲਾਇਸੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਰਾਜੀ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
gurmukh tol tolaa-isee sach taraajee tol.
A Guru’s follower would always keep assessing his wealth of truth (conduct) according to the Guru’s teachings.
ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਤੱਕੜੀ ਤੇ ਸੱਚ ਦੇ ਵੱਟਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਪਰਖ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਉਤਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁੱਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਠਾਕੀ ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
aasaa mansaa mohnee gur thaakee sach bol.
Hope and desire which allure our minds are restrained by the Guru’s true Word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ, ਉਮੀਦ ਤੇ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਜੋ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹਿਕਾ ਲੈਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਰੋਕ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲਾਏ ਤੋਲਸੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥੭॥
aap tulaa-ay tolsee pooray pooraa tol. ||7||
God Himself would weigh (and examine that person’s conduct), then He would find that person of perfect weight (completely worthy of union with Him).
ਉਹ ਖੁਦ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ (ਇਨਸਾਨੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਤਰਾਜ਼ੂ ਵਿੱਚ, ਤੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਕਥਨੈ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਨਾ ਪੜਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਭਾਰ ॥
kathnai kahan na chhutee-ai naa parh pustak bhaar.
No one is saved by mere talk and speech, nor by reading loads of books.
ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਨਾਲ ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ।
ਕਾਇਆ ਸੋਚ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਿਆਰ ॥
kaa-i-aa soch na paa-ee-ai bin har bhagat pi-aar.
We cannot realize God by mere ablution of the body, without true devotion and love for Him.
ਜੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤਾਂ ਨਿਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੮॥੯॥
naanak naam na veesrai maylay gur kartaar. ||8||9||
O’ Nanak, the person who does not forget Naam, Guru will unite him with God.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ

Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਰਤਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
satgur pooraa jay milai paa-ee-ai ratan beechaar.
If we meet the perfect Guru, then we obtain his precious teachings.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਕੀਮਤੀ) ਰਤਨ (ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਰਤਨ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ।
ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਰਬ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
man deejai gur aapnay paa-ee-ai sarab pi-aar.
When we completely surrender our mind to our Guru; we find the universal love.
ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਪਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਵਗਣ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
mukat padaarath paa-ee-ai avgan maytanhaar. ||1||
Then we obtain the commodity of God’s Name, which brings us salvation and destroy our vices.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਿਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਔਗੁਣ ਮਿਟਾਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ l
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhaa-ee ray gur bin gi-aan na ho-ay.
O’ Brother, without The Guru, divine knowledge is not obtained.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਨਾਰਦੈ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਆਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
poochhahu barahmay naardai bayd bi-aasai ko-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Go and ask Brahma, Naarad and Vyas, the writer of Vedas, they will agree,
(ਬੇਸ਼ਕ) ਕੋਈ ਧਿਰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਨੂੰ, ਨਾਰਦ ਨੂੰ, ਵੇਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ ਬਿਆਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛ ਲਵੋ,
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਨਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan Dhun jaanee-ai akath kahaavai so-ay.
that it is only through the Guru’s word that we understand divine knowledge and meditation on Naam. The Guru makes us recite God’s indescribable virtues.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਉਣੀ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਨੀ,(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ) ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਛਾਵ ਘਣੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
safli-o birakh haree-aavlaa chhaav ghanayree ho-ay.
Like a Green, fruit-bearing Tree with abundance of shade, the Guru is the provider of peace and comfort.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਇਕ ਹਰਾ ਤੇ ਫਲਦਾਰ ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੀ ਸੰਘਣੀ ਛਾਂ ਹੈ।
ਲਾਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕੀ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
laal javayhar maankee gur bhandaarai so-ay. ||2||
All the precious divine wisdom comes from the Guru.
ਲਾਲਾਂ ਜਵਾਹਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੋਤੀਆਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਉੱਚੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
gur bhandaarai paa-ee-ai nirmal naam pi-aar.
Only from the Guru we obtain love and devotion for the immaculate Naam.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੋ ਵਖਰੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
saacho vakhar sanchee-ai poorai karam apaar.
By the grace of the infinite God, we acquire the true capital of His Name.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਸੌਦਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਣੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਸੁਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
sukh-daata dukh maytno satgur asur sanghaar. ||3||
The true Guru is the Giver of peace, the eliminator of pain and anguish, and slayer of demons like lust, anger, and greed.
ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਸੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਟਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ l
ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਨਾ ਕੰਧੀ ਨਾ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
bhavjal bikham daraavno naa kanDhee naa paar.
This world is like a vast difficult and dreadful ocean of vices, which has no shore on either sides.
ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਬੜਾ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਹੈ ਬੜਾ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਢਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ।
ਨਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹੜਾ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਵੰਝੁ ਮਲਾਰੁ ॥
naa bayrhee naa tulharhaa naa tis vanjh malaar.
And there is no boat, no raft, no pole, and no boatman to help us cross this world ocean.
ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਮਲਾਹ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਮਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਵੰਝ-ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਲੰਘਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੈ ਕਾ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
satgur bhai kaa bohithaa nadree paar utaar. ||4||
Only with the Blessings and Grace of The True Guru, that we can cross over this dreadful ocean.
ਕੇਵਲ ਸੱਚਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਡਰਾਉਣੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਬਚਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਕ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
ik til pi-aaraa visrai dukh laagai sukh jaa-ay.
If I forget my beloved (God), even for a moment, peace and comfort depart, and pain and suffering sets in.
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਕ ਰਤਾ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਆ ਘੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੁੱਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜਲਉ ਜਲਾਵਣੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਰਸਾਇ ॥
jihvaa jala-o jalaavanee naam na japai rasaa-ay.
Therefore, may that tongue burn down which does not utter God’s Name.
ਸੜ ਜਾਏ ਉਹ ਸੜਨ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੀਭ ਜੋ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਪਦੀ।
ਘਟੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲੋ ਜਮੁ ਪਕੜੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥੫॥
ghat binsai dukh aglo jam pakrhai pachhutaa-ay. ||5||
When the body of a person perishes, that person suffers great pain and caught by the demon of Death, he regret and repents in vain.
ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀਨ ਬੰਦੇ ਦਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਮ ਆ ਫੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਗਏ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
mayree mayree kar ga-ay tan Dhan kalat na saath.
Many have departed from the world crying ‘this is mine, that is mine,’ yet neither their body, nor wealth, nor their wife accompanied them (after death).
ਜੀਵ ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਮੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁਕਾਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਟੁਰ ਗਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੇਹਾਂ, ਦੌਲਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਹੁਟੀਆਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਈਆਂ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਆਥਿ ॥
bin naavai Dhan baad hai bhoolo maarag aath.
Without God’s Name, worldly wealth is useless and those who run after it, stray from the righteous path.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਧਨ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚਉ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਕਥੋ ਕਾਥਿ ॥੬॥
saacha-o saahib sayvee-ai gurmukh aktho kaath. ||6||
We should always remember the eternal Master. The indescribable virtues of God can only be described through the Guru’s teachings.
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕਰ।
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
aavai jaa-ay bhavaa-ee-ai pa-i-ai kirat kamaa-ay.
One continues in the cycles of birth and death as per one’s past deeds
ਆਦਮੀ ਜੰਮਦਾ, ਮਰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਧੱਕਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਮੇਟੀਐ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
poorab likhi-aa ki-o maytee-ai likhi-aa laykh rajaa-ay.
How can this destiny based on one’s past deeds be erased when it is written by God’ will?
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੭॥
bin har naam na chhutee-ai gurmat milai milaa-ay. ||7||
Without God’s Name one cannot be saved from the cycle of birth and death. Only through Guru’s teachings one can be united with God.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਰਾਨੁ ॥
tis bin mayraa ko nahee jis kaa jee-o paraan.
Without God, I don’t have anyone to call my own, to Him belongs my body and soul.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਉ ਲੋਭੁ ਜਲਉ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa jal bala-o lobh jala-o abhimaan.
Let this ego, attachment, greed, and pride be burnt to ashes (which have separated me from my God)
ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ, ਅਪਣੱਤ, ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਸੜ ਬਲ ਜਾਏ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੮॥੧੦॥
naanak sabad veechaaree-ai paa-ee-ai gunee niDhaan. ||8||10||
O’ Nanak, it is only by reflecting and following the Guru’s teachings that we can realize God, who is the treasure of all virtues.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ

Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਜਲ ਕਮਲੇਹਿ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee jal kamlayhi.
O’ my mind, have that kind of love for God like the lotus flower has for water.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰ, ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ l
ਲਹਰੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਛਾੜੀਐ ਭੀ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਅਸਨੇਹਿ ॥
lahree naal pachhaarhee-ai bhee vigsai asnayhi.
Tossed about by the waves, it still blossoms with love.
ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਧੱਕੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ (ਪਰਸਪਰ) ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੌਲ ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜਦਾ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ
ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮਰਣੁ ਤਿਨੇਹਿ ॥੧॥
jal meh jee-a upaa-ay kai bin jal maran tinayhi. ||1||
Like lotus flowers, God has created some creatures in water who cannot survive without water.
ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
