ਬੰਨੁ ਬਦੀਆ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਵਣੀ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਧੰਨੁ ॥
bann badee-aa kar Dhaavnee taa ko aakhai Dhan.
Make the restraint on sinful activities as your effort, only then shall people praise you and call you blessed.
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਦੀ) ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਆਉਣੋਂ) ਰੋਕ ਦੇ, (ਜੇ ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ) ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸ਼ੇ ਆਖੇਗਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਚੜੈ ਚਵਗਣ ਵੰਨੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak vaykhai nadar kar charhai chavgan vann. ||4||2||
O Nanak, God shall look upon you with His Glance of Grace, and you shall be blessed with honor four fold. ||4||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇੰਜ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖੇਗਾ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਉਤੇ ਚੌ-ਗੁਣਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਰੂਪ ਚੜ੍ਹੇਗਾ ॥੪॥੨॥

Sorat’h, First Guru, Four-Liners:
ਮਾਇ ਬਾਪ ਕੋ ਬੇਟਾ ਨੀਕਾ ਸਸੁਰੈ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਜਵਾਈ ॥
maa-ay baap ko baytaa neekaa sasurai chatur javaa-ee.
The son is loved by his mother and father; later he is considered the wise son-in-law to his father-in-law.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਸੀ, ਕਦੇ ਸਹੁਰੇ ਦਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਜਵਾਈ ਸੀ,
ਬਾਲ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਕੌ ਬਾਪੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਭਾਈ ਕੌ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
baal kanniaa kou baap pi-aaraa bhaa-ee kou at bhaa-ee.
The same man, a father, is loved by his son and daughter, and is very dear to his brother.
ਕਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਧੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪਿਉ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਭਰਾ ਦਾ ਬੜਾ (ਸਨੇਹੀ) ਭਰਾ ਸੀ,
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਈ ਪਰਾਈ ॥
hukam bha-i-aa baahar ghar chhodi-aa khin meh bha-ee paraa-ee.
But by God’s Command, he forsakes his house and leaves, and in an instant, everything becomes alien to him.
ਜਦੋਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਇੰਜ ਇਕ ਪਲਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਓਪਰਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਨ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਧੂੜਿ ਧੁਮਾਈ ॥੧॥
naam daan isnaan na manmukh tit tan Dhoorh Dhumaa-ee. ||1||
The self-conceited person neither has done any meditation on Naam, nor any act of charity, does not cleanse his consciousness, and through this human body he has been doing evil deeds as if rolling in dust. ||1||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੇ ਨਾਹ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਨਾਹ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਆਚਰਨ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਖੇਹ-ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ॥੧॥
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
man maani-aa naam sakhaa-ee.
My mind is convinced that only Naam is one’s true friend and companion.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਾਇ ਪਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paa-ay para-o gur kai balihaarai jin saachee boojh bujhaa-ee. rahaa-o.
Therefore, I bow to the feet of the Guru and feel like sacrificing myself to Him, who has given me this true understanding. ||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੱਚੀ ਮੱਤ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ) ॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਝੂਠ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਵਾਦੁ ਰਚਾਈ ॥
jag si-o jhooth pareet man bayDhi-aa jan si-o vaad rachaa-ee.
The mind of a self-conceited person is impressed with the false love of the world; he develops a strife with God’s devotees.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਝੂਠੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਝਗੜਾ ਖੜਾ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ਮਰੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥
maa-i-aa magan ahinis mag johai naam na layvai marai bikh khaa-ee.
Infatuated with Maya, night and day, he sees only the worldly path; he does not meditate on Naam, and he dies by being poisoned by the love of worldly riches,
ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਹੀ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੰਧਣ ਵੈਣਿ ਰਤਾ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
ganDhan vain rataa hitkaaree sabdai surat na aa-ee.
He is infatuated with dirty songs and dances, which give rise to sinful thoughts, but he hasn’t obtained any consciousness through the teachings of the Guru.
ਉਹ ਗੰਦੇ ਗੀਤਾਂ (ਗਾਵਣ ਸੁਣਨ) ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੰਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹਿਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ।
ਰੰਗਿ ਨ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੨॥
rang na raataa ras nahee bayDhi-aa manmukh pat gavaa-ee. ||2||
Without being imbued with God’s love, and without being pierced with the relish of Naam, a self-conceited person loses honor (both in this and the next world). ||2||
ਨਾਹ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੱਚ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਮਨਮੁਖ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਧ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਈ ॥
saaDh sabhaa meh sahj na chaakhi-aa jihbaa ras nahee raa-ee.
He does not enjoy celestial peace in the Company of the Holy, and there is not even a bit of sweetness on his tongue.
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਣਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਕਦੇ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਦਰ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
man tan Dhan apunaa kar jaani-aa dar kee khabar na paa-ee.
He calls his mind, body and wealth his own; he has no knowledge of the Presence of God.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਮਝੀ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਬਰ-ਸੂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ।
ਅਖੀ ਮੀਟਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
akhee meet chali-aa anDhi-aaraa ghar dar disai na bhaa-ee.
O brother, closing his eyes, he walks in spiritual darkness; he cannot perceive his true home,
ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ-ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਟ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਦਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
jam dar baaDhaa tha-ur na paavai apunaa kee-aa kamaa-ee. ||3||
So bound at the door of the demon of death, he reaps what he has sown and finds no place to escape.||3||
ਆਖ਼ਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਅਖੀ ਵੇਖਾ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
nadar karay taa akhee vaykhaa kahnaa kathan na jaa-ee.
When God casts His Glance of Grace, then I see Him everywhere with my own eyes; this is a sublime feeling which cannot be described.
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
kannee sun sun sabad salaahee amrit ridai vasaa-ee.
With my ears, I continually listen to the teachings of the Guru, and I praise Him; His Heavenly Naam is enshrined within my heart.
ਤਾਂ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਮੈਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
nirbha-o nirankaar nirvair pooran jot samaa-ee.
He is Fearless, Formless and absolutely without vengeance; His light is fully pervading in the entire world.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੈ ਨਿਰ-ਆਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak gur vin bharam na bhaagai sach naam vadi-aa-ee. ||4||3||
O Nanak, without the Guru, doubt is not dispelled; through the True Naam, glorious honor is obtained. ||4||3||
(ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਕੇਵਲ ਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੩॥

ਪੁੜੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਪੁੜੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਆਸਣੁ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਚਉਬਾਰਾ ॥
purh Dhartee purh paanee aasan chaar kunt cha-ubaaraa.
O God, this whole creation is your lofty mansion – the surrounding universe is like the four walls of the mansion, the earth is the floor, the sky is the roof – this is your throne.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਚੁਬਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਚਾਰੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਉਸ ਚੁਬਾਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਕੰਧਾਂ ਹਨ, ਧਰਤੀ ਉਸ ਚੁਬਾਰੇ ਦਾ (ਹੇਠਲਾ) ਪੁੜ ਹੈ (ਫ਼ਰਸ਼ ਹੈ), ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਉਸ ਚੁਬਾਰੇ ਦਾ (ਉਪਰਲਾ) ਪੁੜ ਹੈ (ਛੱਤ ਹੈ)।
ਸਗਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਏਕਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਟਕਸਾਲਾ ॥੧॥
sagal bhavan kee moorat aykaa mukh tayrai taksaalaa. ||1||
Yours is the one and only form of the entire universe; You are the factory that creates all. ||1||
ਇਸ ਚੁਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੈ। ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ (ਦੇ ਜੀਆਂ ਜੰਤਾਂ) ਦੀਆਂ ਮੂਰਤੀਆਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਟਕਸਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਘੜੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ॥
mayray saahibaa tayray choj vidaanaa.
O’ God, wonderful are Your astonishing plays.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ! ਤੇਰੇ ਕੌਤਕ ਅਚਰਜ ਹਨ।
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਲੀਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jal thal mahee-al bharipur leenaa aapay sarab samaanaa. rahaa-o.
You are pervading in all the waters, lands, and the sky, and You are pervading everywhere. ||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ, ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਉਪਰ (ਸਾਰੇ ਪੁਲਾੜ ਵਿਚ) ਭਰਪੂਰ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ। ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਕਿਨੇਹਾ ॥
jah jah daykhaa tah jot tumaaree tayraa roop kinayhaa.
Wherever I look, I see Your Light, but I wonder, what is Your form?
ਮੈਂ ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ (ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ) ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕੈਸਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਬਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ)।
ਇਕਤੁ ਰੂਪਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਪਰਛੰਨਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਜੇਹਾ ॥੨॥
ikat roop fireh parchhannaa ko-ay na kis hee jayhaa. ||2||
Although You are just one, yet still You appear in so many different forms and garbs and none of these forms or features resemble each other. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੁਕ ਕੇ ਫਿਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ (ਅਸਚਰਜ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਕੋਈ ਇਕ ਜੀਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਸੇਤਜ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਜੰਤਾ ॥
andaj jayraj ut-bhuj saytaj tayray keetay jantaa.
All these different creatures and species whether born through eggs, placenta, earth, or sweat are Your created beings.
ਅੰਡੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ, ਜਿਓਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ, ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ, ਮੁੜ੍ਹਕੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜੰਮੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
ਏਕੁ ਪੁਰਬੁ ਮੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤੂ ਸਭਨਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਰਵੰਤਾ ॥੩॥
ayk purab mai tayraa daykhi-aa too sabhnaa maahi ravantaa. ||3||
The one astonishing play of Yours which I have seen is that You are pervading in all creation. ||3||
ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਅਚਰਜ ਖੇਡ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ ॥੩॥
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
tayray gun bahutay mai ayk na jaani-aa mai moorakh kichh deejai.
Your glories and merits are so many, and I have not realized even one. Please bless me, the fool, with some wisdom.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗੁਣ ਹਨ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗੀ ਅਕਲ ਦੇਹ!
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਡੁਬਦਾ ਪਥਰੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੪॥
paranvat naanak sun mayray saahibaa dubdaa pathar leejai. ||4||4||
Prays Nanak, listen, O my Master: I am sinking like a stone in this worldly ocean – please, save me! ||4||4||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਸੁਣ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪੱਥਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਰਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਲੈ! ॥੪॥੪॥

Sorat’h, First Guru:
ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਤਿਤੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਤੂ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
ha-o paapee patit param paakhandee too nirmal nirankaaree.
I am a sinner, an apostate, and a great hypocrite; You are immaculate and formless.
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ!) ਮੈਂ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ, (ਸਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਡਿਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਪਖੰਡੀ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਹੈਂ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਪਰਮ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
amrit chaakh param ras raatay thaakur saran tumaaree. ||1||
Those who come to Your sanctuary, by tasting the nectar of Naam, they remain intoxicated with the supreme relish of Your Love. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜੇ, ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਆ ਕੇ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਚੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ॥
kartaa too mai maan nimaanay.
O my Creator, for me the honorless, You are my honor.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ! ਮੈਂ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮਾਣ ਹੈਂ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ, ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ)।
ਮਾਣੁ ਮਹਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maan mahat naam Dhan palai saachai sabad samaanay. rahaa-o.
Honored are those who have the glory and wealth of Naam and who remain absorbed in the teachings of the Guru. ll Pause ll
ਮਾਣ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਤੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਹਮ ਊਰੇ ਹੋਛੇ ਤੂ ਗਉਰਾ ਹਮ ਹਉਰੇ ॥
too pooraa ham ooray hochhay too ga-uraa ham ha-uray.
You are perfect, while I am worthless and imperfect. You are profound, while I am trivial.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਊਣੇ ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਥੋੜ੍ਹ-ਵਿਤੇ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਹੌਲੇ ਹਾਂ।
