ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਸਭਨਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਇਆ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਸਭਨਾਹ ॥
sabhnaa marnaa aa-i-aa vaychhorhaa sabhnaah.
Death comes to all, and all must suffer separation.
ਸਭ ਨੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਹੋਣਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੁਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਆਣਿਆ ਆਗੈ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਕਿਨਾਹ ॥
puchhahu jaa-ay si-aani-aa aagai milan kinaah.
Let us ask those wise persons, what kind of people can unite with God after death.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ) ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਤਾ ਲਵੋ ਕਿ ਅਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਕਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਵਡੜੀ ਵੇਦਨ ਤਿਨਾਹ ॥੧॥
jin mayraa saahib veesrai vadrhee vaydan tinaah. ||1||
Those who forsake God, have to suffer the acute pain of separation. ||1||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਭੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਹੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
bhee saalaahihu saachaa so-ay.
So let us always praise that eternal Being,
ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ।
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa kee nadar sadaa sukh ho-ay. rahaa-o.
by whose Grace peace ever prevails. ||Pause||
ਉਸੇ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
vadaa kar salaahnaa hai bhee hosee so-ay.
Let us praise God as the Supreme Being, who is present now and will always be there.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰੋ, ਉਹ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਹੇਗਾ।
ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਮਾਣਸ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabhnaa daataa ayk too maanas daat na ho-ay.
O’ God, You alone are the sole Giver; mankind cannot give any gifts to anyone.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਰੰਨ ਕਿ ਰੁੰਨੈ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
jo tis bhaavai so thee-ai rann ke runnai ho-ay. ||2||
Whatever He wills that happens; what good it does to act like a whining woman? ||2||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰੰਨਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਰੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਕੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ? ॥੨॥
ਧਰਤੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਗੜ ਕੇਤੀ ਗਈ ਵਜਾਇ ॥
Dhartee upar kot garh kaytee ga-ee vajaa-ay.
Many have proclaimed their sovereignty over millions of fortresses on the earth, but even they have departed.
ਇਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਆਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਦਾ) ਢੋਲ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ (ਆਖ਼ਰ) ਚਲੇ ਗਏ।
ਜੋ ਅਸਮਾਨਿ ਨ ਮਾਵਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਨਕਿ ਨਥਾ ਪਾਇ ॥
jo asmaan na maavnee tin nak nathaa paa-ay.
Even those, who think themselves higher than the skies and richer or more powerful than anyone else, have been humbled by God.
ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਤਨਾ (ਤਾਕਤ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਅਸਮਾਨ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਓਂਦੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਕ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਨੱਥ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜੇ ਮਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੂਲੀਆ ਕਾਹੇ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
jay man jaaneh soolee-aa kaahay mithaa khaahi. ||3||
O’ my mind, if you realize that the result of your evil deeds is going to be painful, then why do you indulge in sinful acts of worldly pleasures? ||3||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਲਏਂ ਕਿ ਮੌਜ ਮੇਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਨਤੀਜਾ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਮਸਤ ਰਹੇਂ? ॥੩॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਉਗੁਣ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਤੇਤੇ ਗਲੀ ਜੰਜੀਰ ॥
naanak a-ogun jayt-rhay taytay galee janjeer.
O’ Nanak, all the misdeeds we commit in order to enjoy the worldly pleasures become like nooses around our necks.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਪਾਪ-ਵਿਕਾਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਸਾਡੇ ਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਨਿ ਤ ਕਟੀਅਨਿ ਸੇ ਭਾਈ ਸੇ ਵੀਰ ॥
jay gun hon ta katee-an say bhaa-ee say veer.
However, if only we cultivate the virtues, then we could cut these nooses of misdeeds. Our virtues are the real friends and true relatives.
ਇਹ ਪਾਪ-ਫਾਹੀਆਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਕੱਟੀਆਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਜੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਣ। ਗੁਣ ਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਭਾਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ।
ਅਗੈ ਗਏ ਨ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢਹੁ ਵੇਪੀਰ ॥੪॥੧॥
agai ga-ay na mannee-an maar kadhahu vaypeer. ||4||1||
Otherwise when we are in God’s presence, we will not be given any honor, so drive out these vices . ||4||1||
ਇਥੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਗਏ ਹੋਏ ਪਾਪ-ਵਿਕਾਰ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਆਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣੇ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਦਿਉ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Sorath, First Guru, First Beat:
ਮਨੁ ਹਾਲੀ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਰਮੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਤਨੁ ਖੇਤੁ ॥
man haalee kirsaanee karnee saram paanee tan khayt.
O’ my friend, make your mind like a hardworking farmer, your good deeds the farming, your body the farm, and let hard work be the water for your crops.
ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਾਲ਼ੀ (ਵਰਗਾ ਉੱਦਮੀ) ਬਣਾ, ਉਚੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਹੀ ਸਮਝ, ਮੇਹਨਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਣਾ, ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਲੀ ਸਮਝ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਾ ਰਖੁ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਵੇਸੁ ॥
naam beej santokh suhaagaa rakh gareebee vays.
Let God’s Naam be the seed, contentment the plow, and your simple garb of humility the fence.
ਫਿਰ (ਇਸ ਪੈਲੀ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਜ, ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਹਾਗਾ ਬਣਾ, ਤੇ ਸਾਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਾੜ ਹੋਵੇ।
ਭਾਉ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਜੰਮਸੀ ਸੇ ਘਰ ਭਾਗਠ ਦੇਖੁ ॥੧॥
bhaa-o karam kar jammsee say ghar bhaagath daykh. ||1||
Then by doing the deeds of love, the seed of Naam would sprout, and you would see that you have become truly rich with the wealth of Naam. ||1||
ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਖ ਕਿ ਸਰੀਰ-ਘਰ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ ॥੧॥
ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
baabaa maa-i-aa saath na ho-ay.
Brothers, Maya, the worldly riches, don’t accompany a person in the end.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਇਥੋਂ ਤੁਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਮਾਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
ਇਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
in maa-i-aa jag mohi-aa virlaa boojhai ko-ay. rahaa-o.
This Maya has bewitched the world, only a rare one understands this. ||Pause||
ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਗਲ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਹਾਣੁ ਹਟੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਰਜਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਵਥੁ ॥
haan hat kar aarjaa sach naam kar vath.
Let your body be like a shop stocked with the merchandise of Naam.
ਇਸ (ਸਰੀਰ) ਹੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਹਰ ਸਵਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਸੌਦਾ ਬਣਾ।
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੋਚ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਂਡਸਾਲ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਰਖੁ ॥
surat soch kar bhaaNdsaal tis vich tis no rakh.
Let concentration and reason be your warehouse, keep that merchandise of Naam in that warehouse,
ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਮੰਡਲ ਨੂੰ (ਭਾਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਭਾਂਡਸਾਲ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸੌਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ।
ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਮਨ ਹਸੁ ॥੨॥
vanjaari-aa si-o vanaj kar lai laahaa man has. ||2||
Deal with God’s devotees, earn your profit of Naam, and then you will rejoice in your mind. ||2||
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਤਸੰਗੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖੱਟੀ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਖਿੜਾਓ ॥੨॥
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਉਦਾਗਰੀ ਸਤੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਲੈ ਚਲੁ ॥
sun saasat sa-udaagree sat ghorhay lai chal.
Let your trade be listening to the scriptures, and transport this knowledge by the horses of truthful living.
ਧਾਰਮਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਣਨਾਤੇਰਾ ਵਣਜ-ਵਪਾਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਚਣ ਨੂੰ ਲੈਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਸੱਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਘੋੜੇ।
ਖਰਚੁ ਬੰਨੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਮਤੁ ਮਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਕਲੁ ॥
kharach bann chang-aa-ee-aa mat man jaaneh kal.
Let good deeds be like the travel expenses of your soul. O my mind, don’t procrastinate in this trade of Naam.
ਚੰਗੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਰਚ ਬਣਾ। ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਇਸ ਵਪਾਰ ਦੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨੂੰ) ਕੱਲ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਾ।
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਕੈ ਦੇਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਾ ਸੁਖਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਮਹਲੁ ॥੩॥
nirankaar kai days jaahi taa sukh laheh mahal. ||3||
When you arrive in God’s presence, you would find spiritual peace. ||3||
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਟਿਕ ਜਾਏਂ, ਤਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਲੱਭ ਜਾਏਗਾ ॥੩॥
ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੰਮੁ ॥
laa-ay chit kar chaakree man naam kar kamm.
Let the focusing of your consciousness be your service, and let your occupation be the full faith in Naam.
ਪੂਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ) ਨੌਕਰੀ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ-ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਰੱਖ (ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ)।
