ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਰਾਤੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪਰਭਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
tujh hee man raatay ahinis parbhaatay har rasnaa jap man ray. ||2||
O’ God, bless me so that I remain imbued with your love in my mind day and night. O’ my mind, keep chanting God’s Naam with your tongue. ||2||
(ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕਿ) ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹੇ। ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਸਵੇਰੇ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ! ॥੨॥
ਤੁਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਰਾਚੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਸਾਚੇ ॥
tum saachay ham tum hee raachay sabad bhayd fun saachay.
You are the Ultimate and Eternal Truth, and I am absorbed in Your meditation; through realizing the teachings of the Guru, I shall ultimately become stable in my mind again.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹੀਏ, ਜੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਝੇ ਰਹੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਭੀ (ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਅਡੋਲ-ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੇ ਸੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥੩॥
ahinis naam ratay say soochay mar janmay say kaachay. ||3||
Those who are imbued with the Naam day and night are pure, while those who die to be reborn are impure. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਆਤਮਾ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਜੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਘਾੜਤ ਅਜੇ ਕੋਝੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
avar na deesai kis saalaahee tiseh sareek na ko-ee.
I do not see any other like God; who else should I praise? No one is equal to Him.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮੈਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ।
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੫॥
paranvat naanak daasan daasaa gurmat jaani-aa so-ee. ||4||5||
Prays Nanak, I am the slave of His slaves; by Guru’s Instruction, I have gotten to know Him. ||4||5||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ (ਲਾ-ਸ਼ਰੀਕ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੫॥

Raag Sorat’h, First Guru:
ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਕਰਮਾ ॥
alakh apaar agamm agochar naa tis kaal na karmaa.
God is unknowable, infinite, unfathomable and imperceptible. He is not subject to either death or destiny.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਅਦ੍ਰਿੱਸ਼ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ, ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ, ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ, ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਦਬਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜੀਵ ਕਰਮ-ਅਧੀਨ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ)।
ਜਾਤਿ ਅਜਾਤਿ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਭਰਮਾ ॥੧॥
jaat ajaat ajonee sambha-o naa tis bhaa-o na bharmaa. ||1||
He has no caste, He is unborn, self-created, and free of doubt and desire. ||1||
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ। ਨਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਾਚੇ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥
saachay sachiaar vitahu kurbaan.
I am a sacrifice to the true and eternal God.
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਚਾਈ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪ ਵਰਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naa tis roop varan nahee raykh-i-aa saachai sabad neesaan. rahaa-o.
He has no form, color, or features, and is revealed through the teachings of the Guru. ||Pause||
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਰੰਗ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਚਿਹਨ ਚੱਕ੍ਰ ਹੈ। ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਥਹੁ-ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
naa tis maat pitaa sut banDhap naa tis kaam na naaree.
God has no parents, siblings or relatives; He is free of sexual desire; has no mate.
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਨਾਹ ਮਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਪਿਉ ਨਾਹ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨਾਹ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ। ਨਾਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਫੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅਪਰ ਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸਗਲੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
akul niranjan apar parampar saglee jot tumaaree. ||2||
God has no ancestry; He is immaculate, infinite and endless; O’God, Your Light pervades in all. ||2||
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਭ ਥਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥
ghat ghat antar barahm lukaa-i-aa ghat ghat jot sabaa-ee.
God is hidden within each and every heart, and in every heart is His light.
ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਗੁਪਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਘਟ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਉਸੇ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ[
ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ॥੩॥
bajar kapaat muktay gurmatee nirbhai taarhee laa-ee. ||3||
It is as if our mind is behind heavy doors which are opened by Guru’s enlightenment; one becomes poised and resolute, through deep meditation. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਰੜੇ ਕਵਾੜ ਖੁਲ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਡਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਤਾ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥
jant upaa-ay kaal sir jantaa vasgat jugat sabaa-ee.
After creating the beings, He has made them subject to death and has kept the way of life of all the creatures under His control.
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਮੌਤ (ਭੀ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੪॥
satgur sayv padaarath paavahi chhooteh sabad kamaa-ee. ||4||
They, who follow the teachings of the true Guru , obtain the treasure of Naam; they are freed from worldly bonds. ||4||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਢਾਲ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਸੂਚੈ ਭਾਡੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੂਚਾਚਾਰੀ ॥
soochai bhaadai saach samaavai virlay soochaachaaree.
Just as a clean commodity is only stored in a clean vessel, similarly, God can only be enshrined in a pure mind, but rare are the persons, whose conduct is truthful and pure.
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਟਿਕ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ (ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਾਲੇ) ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤੰਤੈ ਕਉ ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥੬॥
tantai ka-o param tant milaa-i-aa naanak saran tumaaree. ||5||6||
Then the individual soul is united with the Supreme Soul; Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary, O God. ||5||6||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮ-ਆਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮੇਲ ਕਰਦਾ) ਹੈਂ ॥੫॥੬॥

Raag Sorat’h, First Guru:
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਪਿਆਸ ॥
ji-o meenaa bin paanee-ai ti-o saakat marai pi-aas.
Just as a fish dies without water, a worshipper of worldly riches dies in the thirst for worldly wealth,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੱਛੀ (ਤੜਫਦੀ) ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਰੀਐ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਜੋ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਵੈ ਸਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
ti-o har bin maree-ai ray manaa jo birthaa jaavai saas. ||1||
So shall you die, O mind, because without remembering God, each breath is in vain. ||1||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਹਰੀ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਸੁਆਸ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਇ ॥
man ray raam naam jas lay-ay.
O mind, chant God’s Naam, and sing His praises.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਹਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin gur ih ras ki-o laha-o gur maylai har day-ay. rahaa-o.
Without the guidance of the Guru, this bliss cannot be obtained. It can be obtained only by His grace when God unites a person with the Guru. ||Pause||
(ਪਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਇਹ ਰਸ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲੁ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sant janaa mil sangtee gurmukh tirath ho-ay.
So O’ my mind, go and join the company of the saintly people, because that is the pilgrimage station of the Guru.
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ (ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੀ (ਅਸਲ) ਤੀਰਥ (-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ) ਹੈ।
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਮਜਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
athsath tirath majnaa gur daras paraapat ho-ay. ||2||
Being in the presence of the Guru, and following his teachings, one obtains the merit of bathing at all the sixty-eight holy places. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸਮਝੋ) ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਉ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਤਪੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥
ji-o jogee jat baahraa tap naahee sat santokh.
Like the Yogi without abstinence, and like penance without truth and contentment,
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਉਹ ਜੋਗੀ (ਨਿਸਫਲ ਹੈ), ਜੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉੱਚਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤਾਂ (ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਤਪ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਉ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦੋਖੁ ॥੩॥
ti-o naamai bin dayhuree jam maarai antar dokh. ||3||
so is the body without Naam; death will slay it, because of it’s sins. ||3||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ। ਨਾਮ-ਹੀਣੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਸਜ਼ਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਾਕਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥
saakat paraym na paa-ee-ai har paa-ee-ai satgur bhaa-ay.
The faithless cynic does not obtain God’s Love; God’s Love is obtained only through the True Guru.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪਿਆਰ ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੭॥
sukh dukh daataa gur milai kaho naanak sifat samaa-ay. ||4||7||
O’ Nanak, God is the benefactor both in pain and pleasure, one merges in God’s praises by meeting the true Guru. ||4||7||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਰੱਬ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੭॥

Raag Sorat’h, First Guru:
ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਨਿ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਹਮ ਥਾਰੇ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
too parabh daataa daan mat pooraa ham thaaray bhaykhaaree jee-o.
God, You are a great Giver and perfect in wisdom, and we are merely Your beggars.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਖੁੰਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੇ (ਦਰ ਦੇ) ਮੰਗਤੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਮੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
mai ki-aa maaga-o kichh thir na rahaa-ee har deejai naam pi-aaree jee-o. ||1||
What should I beg for? Nothing remains permanent; O’ God, please, bless me with Your Beloved Naam. ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਮੰਗਾਂ? ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੈ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਕੇਵਲ) ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇਹ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥
ghat ghat rav rahi-aa banvaaree.
God pervades in each and every heart.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਗੁਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jal thal mahee-al gupto vartai gur sabdee daykh nihaaree jee-o. rahaa-o.
In the water, on the land, and all over, He is pervading but can’t be seen; through the teachings of the Guru, He is revealed. ||Pause||
ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ, ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਉਪਰ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਲੁਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। (ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ! ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਮਰਤ ਪਇਆਲ ਅਕਾਸੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਓ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
marat pa-i-aal akaas dikhaa-i-o gur satgur kirpaa Dhaaree jee-o.
The true Guru has shown kindness to me, and he has shown me God pervading in the mortal world, the netherworld, and all over.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ, ਧਰਤੀ, ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਨੀ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥
so barahm ajonee hai bhee honee ghat bheetar daykh muraaree jee-o. ||2||
I have also realized that God doesn’t go through the womb, He is present now, and He would always be there; O’ my friend, see God, the destroyer of ego within your own heart. ||2||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਰਹੇਗਾ, ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਵੇਖ ॥੨॥
