ਸੂਰੇ ਸੇਈ ਆਗੈ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਮਾਣੋ ॥
sooray say-ee aagai aakhee-ahi dargeh paavahi saachee maano.
They alone are called the brave in the world hereafter, who receive true honor in the eternal God’s presence.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਬੰਦੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਣੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਆਗੈ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
dargeh maan paavahi pat si-o jaaveh aagai dookh na laagai.
Yes, they depart from here in honor, are received with honor in God’s presence, and no pain afflicts them hereafter.
ਉਹ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਅਗਾਂਹ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ।
ਕਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਤਾਂ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
kar ayk Dhi-aavahi taaN fal paavahi jit sayvi-ai bha-o bhaagai.
They remember God with single minded devotion; they receive the fruit of Naam from that God, by remembering whom all fears flee away.
ਉਹ ਇਕ ਮਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਮ ਰੂਪੀ ਫਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਹਰ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਊਚਾ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਣਾ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੋ ॥
oochaa nahee kahnaa man meh rahnaa aapay jaanai jaano.
One should not indulge in egotism and should control oneself; the omniscient God knows everything.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਬੋਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਛ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਰਣੁ ਮੁਣਸਾਂ ਸੂਰਿਆ ਹਕੁ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ ਮਰਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੋ ॥੩॥
maran munsaaN soori-aa hak hai jo ho-ay mareh parvaano. ||3||
The dying of the brave people is fruitful who are approved in God’s presence before death. ||3||
ਸਫਲ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਪੁਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਰਣਾ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਾਬਾ ਰੋਈਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੋ ॥
naanak kis no baabaa ro-ee-ai baajee hai ih sansaaro.
O’ Nanak, this world is merely a play, therefore it is pointless to cry over somebody’s death.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਇਕ ਖੇਡ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਰੋਣਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਕੀਤਾ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥
keetaa vaykhai saahib aapnaa kudrat karay beechaaro.
God sustains His own created universe, He takes care of His own creation.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਆਪ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੀ ਰਚੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਆਪ ਧਿਆਨ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਧਾਰਣ ਧਾਰੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
kudrat beechaaray Dhaaran Dhaaray jin kee-aa so jaanai.
God ponders over and supports His creation, He who has created this universe knows its needs also.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਚੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਵੱਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਸਰਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਭੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
aapay vaykhai aapay boojhai aapay hukam pachhaanai.
God Himself watches everybody’s deeds, He Himself knows what is in their mind and He Himself recognizes His command.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਪਾਰੋ ॥
jin kichh kee-aa so-ee jaanai taa kaa roop apaaro.
God who has created this universe, He alone knows what its needs are; His capabilities are infinite.
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਾਬਾ ਰੋਈਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੋ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak kis no baabaa ro-ee-ai baajee hai ih sansaaro. ||4||2||
O’ Nanak, this world is merely a play, therefore it is pointless to cry over somebody’s death. ||4||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਇਕ ਖੇਡ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਰੋਣਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥

ਸਚੁ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ਸਚਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਚੜਾ ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰੋ ॥
sach sirandaa sachaa jaanee-ai sachrhaa parvadgaaro.
We should understand that God, the creator of this universe, is eternal; the eternal God is the sustainer of the living beings.
ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਕਰੋ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈl
ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਸਚੜਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੋ ॥
jin aapeenai aap saaji-aa sachrhaa alakh apaaro.
He who created Himself, that indescribable and infinite God is eternal.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ।
ਦੁਇ ਪੁੜ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿਅਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੋਰੁ ਅੰਧਾਰੋ ॥
du-ay purh jorh vichhorhi-an gur bin ghor anDhaaro.
After joining the two shells (the earth and the sky), God created the universe and then separated the beings from Himself; without the Guru there is pitch darkness of ignorance in the world.
ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪੁੜ (ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼) ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੂਰਜੁ ਚੰਦੁ ਸਿਰਜਿਅਨੁ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਚਲਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੋ ॥੧॥
sooraj chand sirji-an ahinis chalat veechaaro. ||1||
Creating the sun and the moon, He has thoughtfully designed and executed this phenomena of day and night in the universe. ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਸੂਰਜ ਤੇ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਦਾ ਜਗਤ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਚੜਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਤੂ ਸਚੜਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sachrhaa saahib sach too sachrhaa deh pi-aaro. rahaa-o.
You are eternal Master; You bestow eternal love on Your living beings. ||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ। ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਤੁਧੁ ਸਿਰਜੀ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੋ ॥
tuDh sirjee maydnee dukh sukh dayvanhaaro.
O’ God, You created this universe and You are the giver of pain and pleasure.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ।
ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਿਰਜਿਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥
naaree purakh sirji-ai bikh maa-i-aa moh pi-aaro.
You created men and women and also created the love and attachment for worldly wealth and power, excess of which is poison for the spiritual life.
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਮਰਦ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੇਰੀਆ ਦੇਹਿ ਜੀਆ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥
khaanee banee tayree-aa deh jee-aa aaDhaaro.
You are the architect of the sources of creation of living beings and the languages; You provide the support for all living beings.
ਜੀਵ-ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਖਾਣੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਰਚੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਤਖਤੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਸਚਿ ਨਿਬੇੜਣਹਾਰੋ ॥੨॥
kudrat takhat rachaa-i-aa sach nibayrhanhaaro. ||2||
You have established this nature as Your throne in order to deliver Your true justice. ||2||
ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਚਨਾ-ਰੂਪ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੇਖ ਭੀ ਮੁਕਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੨॥
ਆਵਾ ਗਵਣੁ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਤੂ ਥਿਰੁ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੋ ॥
aavaa gavan sirji-aa too thir karnaihaaro.
O’ God, You have created the cycle of birth and death for the beings, but You Yourself are the eternal Creator.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਰਣਹਾਰ ਹੈਂ।
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਬਧਿਕੁ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਕਾਰੋ ॥
jaman marnaa aa-ay ga-i-aa baDhik jee-o bikaaro.
Engrossed in the vices, the human being keeps going through the cycle of birth and death.
ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਨਿੱਤ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਚੱਕਰ ਪਿਆ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੂਡੜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬੂਡੜੈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਾਰੋ ॥
bhoodrhai naam visaari-aa boodrhai ki-aa tis chaaro.
The evil-minded human being has forsaken Naam; being drowned in the love for worldly attachments, he cannot do anything to help himself.
ਭੈੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਪੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
ਗੁਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਵਣਜਾਰੋ ॥੩॥
gun chhod bikh ladi-aa avgun kaa vanjaaro. ||3||
Forsaking virtues, he has amassed the poisonous worldly riches and he keeps dealing with vices. ||3||
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਇਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਦੜੇ ਆਏ ਤਿਨਾ ਜਾਨੀਆ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਚੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੋ ॥
sad-rhay aa-ay tinaa jaanee-aa hukam sachay kartaaro.
When according the eternal Creator’s command, the soul receives the call to depart from this world,
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੂਹ ਨੂੰ ਇਥੋਂ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਸੱਦੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੋ ॥
naaree purakh vichhunni-aa vichhurhi-aa maylanhaaro.
then men and women get separated; God alone is capable to reunite the separated ones.
ਤਾਂ (ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਰਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੇਲਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਹਣੀਐ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਬਧੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰੋ ॥
roop na jaanai sohnee-ai hukam baDhee sir kaaro.
The demon of death does not consider person’s beauty while summoning for one’s death since he is also bound by God’s command.
ਜਮ ਕਿਸੇ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ (ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਖਿਮਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਦਾ) ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਬਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਲਕ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤੋੜਨਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥੪॥
baalak biraDh na jaannee torhan hayt pi-aaro. ||4||
The demon does not care whether a person is young or old, thus the love and affection for each other is broken. ||4||
ਜਮ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਬੁੱਢਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਇੰਜ ਸਭ ਦਾ (ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਦਾ) ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਟੱਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਨਉ ਦਰ ਠਾਕੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਚੈ ਹੰਸੁ ਗਇਆ ਗੈਣਾਰੇ ॥
na-o dar thaakay hukam sachai hans ga-i-aa gainaaray.
According to the eternal God’s command, when the call comes for the soul to depart, the soul goes into the sky and the nine openings of the body get closed.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੂਹ ਦੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ) ਨੌ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ (ਕਿਤੇ) ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਛੁਟੀ ਮੁਠੀ ਝੂਠਿ ਵਿਧਣੀਆ ਮਿਰਤਕੜਾ ਅੰਙਨੜੇ ਬਾਰੇ ॥
saa Dhan chhutee muthee jhooth viDh-nee-aa miratkarhaa annynarhay baaray.
The woman is separated from her dead husband and defrauded by the love of Maya, she is left alone while her husband’s dead body lies in the yard
(ਜਦ ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਚਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਨਿਖਸਮੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਲੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਵਿਧਵਾ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਲੋਥ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਵੇਹੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮੁਈ ਮਰੁ ਮਾਈਏ ਮਹਲ ਰੁੰਨੀ ਦਰ ਬਾਰੇ ॥
surat mu-ee mar maa-ee-ay mahal runnee dar baaray.
While sitting at the threshold, the widow cries out and says, O’ my mother, with this death even my intellect is not stable anymore.
ਉਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਲੀਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠੀ ਰੋਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ-) ਹੇ ਮਾਏ! ਇਸ ਮੌਤ (ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਮੇਰੀ ਅਕਲ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ।
ਰੋਵਹੁ ਕੰਤ ਮਹੇਲੀਹੋ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
rovhu kant mahayleeho sachay kay gun saaray. ||5||
O’ the soul-brides of the Husband-God, enshrine the virtues of the eternal God in your heart and feel the pangs of your separation from Him. ||5||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਕੰਤ ਦੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਓ!ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਵੈਰਾਗ-ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਓ ॥੫॥
ਜਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਜਾਨੀ ਨਾਵਾਲਿਆ ਕਪੜਿ ਪਟਿ ਅੰਬਾਰੇ ॥
jal mal jaanee naavaali-aa kaparh pat ambaaray.
The relatives and friends bathe the body of the dead person and dress it up with many expensive clothes.
ਸਾਕ-ਸੰਬੰਧੀ (ਮਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਲੋਥ ਨੂੰ) ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਰੇਸ਼ਮ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਕੱਪੜੇ ਨਾਲ (ਲਪੇਟਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਵਾਜੇ ਵਜੇ ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀਆ ਪੰਚ ਮੁਏ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
vaajay vajay sachee baanee-aa panch mu-ay man maaray.
The ceremonial words are uttered while taking the body for cremation, but the close family members remain stricken with grief.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ “ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਤਿ ਹੈ” ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਦੇ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਗ਼ਮ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਇਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਾਨੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੜੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਭਇਆ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
jaanee vichhunnrhay mayraa maran bha-i-aa Dharig jeevan sansaaray.
His bride cries out and says, due to separation from my husband, I too have become like a dead person and accursed is my living in this world.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਰੋਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ- ਸਾਥੀ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਭੀ ਮੋਇਆ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹਾਂ, ਹੁਣ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਊਣ ਨੂੰ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ ਹੈ।
ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਸੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਰ ਸਚੜੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੬॥
jeevat marai so jaanee-ai pir sachrhai hayt pi-aaray. ||6||
One who detaches oneself from worldly attachments while still alive, is recognized in God’s presence. ||6||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਮੋਹ ਨੂੰ ਛਡਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਤੁਸੀ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਰੋਵਣ ਆਈਹੋ ਝੂਠਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
tusee rovhu rovan aa-eeho jhooth muthee sansaaray.
O’ soul-brides, you are destined to cry; you have come to this world to suffer because you have been deceived by the false love for Maya.
ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਓ! ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਈਆਂ ਹੋ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਨੇ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
