ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੈ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
mukh jhoothai jhooth bolnaa ki-o kar soochaa ho-ay.
How can a person be of pure mind who always speaks falsehood ?
ਅਜੇਹਾ ਜੀਵ (ਕਿਸੇ ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਸੁੱਚ ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸੁੱਚਾ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਮਾਂਜੀਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
bin abh sabad na maaNjee-ai saachay tay sach ho-ay. ||1||
Without the holy water of Guru’s word, the mind cannot be cleaned or purified. From the True One alone comes truth.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਜਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨ) ਮਾਂਜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਤੇ) ਇਹ ਸੱਚ (ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣਹੀਣੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕੇਹਿ ॥
munDhay gunheenee sukh kayhi.
O soul-bride, without virtue, what happiness can there be?
ਹੇ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਏ! ਨੇਕੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਕਾਹਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ?
ਪਿਰੁ ਰਲੀਆ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਣਸੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨੇਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pir ralee-aa ras maansee saach sabad sukh nayhi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Only that soul-bride will enjoy the spiritual pleasure of union with God who is at peace through the love of the Guru’s word.
ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ (ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ) ਹੈ
ਪਿਰੁ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਧਨ ਵਾਂਢੀ ਝੂਰੇਇ ॥
pir pardaysee jay thee-ai Dhan vaaNdhee jooray-ay.
If God (the groom) does not dwell in the soul-bride’s heart, the separated soul-bride grieves.
ਜੇ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਦੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਦੇਸ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਛੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਝੂਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਜਲਿ ਥੋੜੈ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
ji-o jal thorhai machhulee karan palaav karay-i.
She wails in pain, like a fish in shallow water.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਮੱਛੀ ਤੜਫਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੨॥
pir bhaavai sukh paa-ee-ai jaa aapay nadar karay-i. ||2||
Spiritual solace is obtained when it pleases God and He himself is benevolent.
ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) ਚੰਗੇ ਲੱਗੇ, ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪ (ਉਸ ਉਤੇ) ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰੇ
ਪਿਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
pir saalaahee aapnaa sakhee sahaylee naal.
O’ soul-bride, praise God (your groom), in the holy congregation of your friends.
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ!) ਤੂੰ ਸਖੀਆਂ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ( ਸਾਧ-ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ l
ਤਨਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਰਤੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥
tan sohai man mohi-aa ratee rang nihaal.
Then your body will become beautiful, your mind will be fascinated, and being imbued with His love you would behold Him.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁਭਾਇਮਾਨ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
sabad savaaree sohnee pir raavay gun naal. ||3||
Adorned with the Guru’s word and her virtues, the beautiful soul-bride enjoys the company of her groom (God).
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਤਨੀ, ਜੋ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨੇਕੀ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਖੋਟੀ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰਿ ॥
kaaman kaam na aavee khotee avgani-aar.
The human life, of an evil soul-bride without any virtues, is wasted in vain.
ਗੁਣ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੀ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਖੋਟੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪੇਈਐ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਝੂਠਿ ਜਲੀ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ॥
naa sukh pay-ee-ai saahurai jhooth jalee vaykaar.
She does not find any peace in this world or in God’s court; she burns (wastes her spiritual life) in falsehood and vices.
ਲੋਕ-ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ; ਝੂਠ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਆਵਣੁ ਵੰਞਣੁ ਡਾਖੜੋ ਛੋਡੀ ਕੰਤਿ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
aavan vanjan daakh-rho chhodee kant visaar. ||4||
Forgotten and abandoned by the groom (God), she is consigned to the torturous cycle of birth and death.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਔਖਾ ਗੇੜ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਕੰਤ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਪਿਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਮੁਤੀ ਸੋ ਕਿਤੁ ਸਾਦਿ ॥
pir kee naar suhaavanee mutee so kit saad.
She used to be the beautiful soul bride of her groom (God). Due to what bad habits has she been deserted?
ਉਹ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਨਾਰ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਣ ਕਰਕੇ) ਛੁੱਟੜ ਹੋ ਗਈ?
ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਬੋਲੇ ਫਾਦਿਲੁ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
pir kai kaam na aavee bolay faadil baad.
Because the soul-bride indulges in worthless arguments which is of no use for attaining union with the groom-God.
ਉਹ ਕਿਉਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਫ਼ਜ਼ੂਲ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕਦਾ?
ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹੈ ਛੂਟੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਸਾਦਿ ॥੫॥
dar ghar dho-ee naa lahai chhootee doojai saad. ||5||
Such a soul-bride who is attracted to other worldly pleasures is deserted and finds no shelter at God’s court.
ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਬੱਬ ਉਹ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਨਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ।
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਾਚਹਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
pandit vaacheh pothee-aa naa boojheh veechaar.
The Pandits, read their books but they do not understand the real essence.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਲੋਕ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ
ਅਨ ਕਉ ਮਤੀ ਦੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
an ka-o matee day chaleh maa-i-aa kaa vaapaar.
After preaching to others they depart from this world, because for them preaching is a business to earn wealth.
ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੱਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਚਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਉੱਦਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਮਾਣ ਲਈ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਕਥਨੀ ਝੂਠੀ ਜਗੁ ਭਵੈ ਰਹਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
kathnee jhoothee jag bhavai rahnee sabad so saar. ||6||
Indulged in false talks, the entire world keeps wandering around. That living alone is sublime which is in accordance with Guru’s word.
ਉਹ ਕੂੜ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮ-ਸਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹਨ।
ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਬੇਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
kaytay pandit jotkee baydaa karahi beechaar.
There are so many Pandits and astrologers who ponder over the Vedas.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜੋਤਸ਼ੀ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਵੇਦਾਂ (ਦੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੇ ਵਾਦੇ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
vaad viroDh salaahnay vaaday aavan jaan.
They glorify their disputes and arguments, and in these controversies they continue in the cycle of birth and death.
ਉਹ ਝਗੜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਟੰਟੇ ਬਖੇੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਸੰਸਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਬਹਿਸ-ਮੁਬਾਹਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਕਹਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੁ ॥੭॥
bin gur karam na chhutsee kahi sun aakh vakhaan. ||7||
Without following the Guru’s teachings, they cannot be absolved from the consequences of their deeds, no matter how much they say, hear and explain.
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰਾ ਚੰਗਾ) ਵਖਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਂ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਮੈ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabh gunvantee aakhee-ahi mai gun naahee ko-ay.
All other soul brides (who are pleasing to God) are called virtuous, but I have no virtue at all.
ਸਭ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਨੇਕੀ-ਨਿਪੁੰਨ ਕਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਨੇਕੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
har var naar suhaavanee mai bhaavai parabh so-ay.
If I also start feeling love for God, I too shall become His beautiful virtuous bride.
ਜੇ ਉਹ ਹਰੀ-ਪਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਨਾਰ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੜਾ ਨਾ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak sabad milaavrhaa naa vaychhorhaa ho-ay. ||8||5||
O’ Nanak, through the Guru’s word, union with God is obtained; and after that there is no more separation from Him.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਫਿਰ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ l
ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਧੀਐ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
jap tap sanjam saaDhee-ai tirath keechai vaas.
One may chant and meditate, practice austerities and self-restraint, and dwell at sacred shrines of pilgrimage;
ਆਦਮੀ ਪਾਠ, ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਤੇ ਸਵੈ-ਰੋਕ-ਥਾਮ ਪਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰ ਲਵੇ,
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਿਆ ਤਾਸੁ ॥
punn daan chang-aa-ee-aa bin saachay ki-aa taas.
he may give donations to charity, and perform good deeds, but without the True One, what is the use of it all?
ਉਹ ਦਾਨ-ਪੁੰਨ ਦੇਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਭਲੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰੇ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਸਤਿਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ?
ਜੇਹਾ ਰਾਧੇ ਤੇਹਾ ਲੁਣੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਨਮੁ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
jayhaa raaDhay tayhaa lunai bin gun janam vinaas. ||1||
As you sow, so shall you harvest. Without virtues, this human life is useless.
ਜੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਉਹ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਫਲ ਵੱਢ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨੇਕੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ l
ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
munDhay gun daasee sukh ho-ay.
O’ innocent soul-bride, peace is obtained by acquiring spiritual virtues.
ਹੇ ਭੋਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
ਅਵਗਣ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
avgan ti-aag samaa-ee-ai gurmat pooraa so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Renouncing vices, following the Guru’s Teachings, you shall be absorbed into the Perfect One.
ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਪੂਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਵਿਣੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਆ ਤਕੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
vin raasee vapaaree-aa takay kundaa chaar.
Just as without capital, the trader looks around in all four directions (and does not reap any profit).
ਸਰਮਾਏ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਵਪਾਰੀ (ਨਫ਼ੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ) ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਰਹੀ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਿ ॥
mool na bujhai aapnaa vasat rahee ghar baar.
(Similarly without the capital of Naam), one who does not realize one’s own real essence, his true capital (God’s Name) remains hidden within his heart.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ (ਅਣਪਛਾਤਾ) ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਵਖਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥
vin vakhar dukh aglaa koorh muthee koorhi-aar. ||2||
Without the commodity of Naam, there is great pain and the false bride is deceived by falsehood.
ਕੂੜ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਲੁੱਟੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ-ਵੱਖਰ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ਹੈ
ਲਾਹਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਉਤਨਾ ਪਰਖੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
laahaa ahinis na-otanaa parkhay ratan veechaar.
One who contemplates and appraises this Jewel of Naam day and night, reaps the profits of spiritual bliss.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤਿ (ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਿੱਤ) ਨਵਾਂ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਸਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਾਰਿ ॥
vasat lahai ghar aapnai chalai kaaraj saar.
That person finds the commodity (Naam) within his heart, and departs from here after successfully accomplishing the purpose of his life,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਸਲ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਸਿਰੇ ਚਾੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਇਥੋਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
vanjaari-aa si-o vanaj kar gurmukh barahm beechaar. ||3||
O’ my friend,Trade with the saintly persons (who trade in God’s Name) and through the Guru contemplate on the all pervading God.
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕਰ।
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
santaaN sangat paa-ee-ai jay maylay maylanhaar.
If God Himself unites us with saintly persons, we obtain the capital of God’s Name in their company.
ਜੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ-ਕਰਾਣ-ਦੇ-ਸਮਰੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਾ ਦੇਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
mili-aa ho-ay na vichhurhai jis antar jot apaar.
Once a person, whose heart is filled with the light of infinite God, is united with God. That person shall never again be separated from Him.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ (ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ ਜਗ ਪਏ) ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੁੜ ਵਿੱਛੁੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ,
ਸਚੈ ਆਸਣਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰ ॥੪॥
sachai aasan sach rahai sachai paraym pi-aar. ||4||
He remains attuned to the eternal God through true love and devotion.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਵ ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਪਿਆਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਿਨੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥
jinee aap pachhaani-aa ghar meh mahal suthaa-ay.
They who have recognized their true self, found God’s presence in their heart.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਰੂਪ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ-ਥਾਂ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
sachay saytee rati-aa sacho palai paa-ay.
Imbued with God’s love, they realize the Eternal Truth (God)
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
