ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਕਿ ॥
har jee-o sabad pachhaanee-ai saach ratay gur vaak.
It’s by following the Guru’s word, and by being imbued with truth, that God is realized.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਵਾਕ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਸਚ ਘਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਓਤਾਕੁ ॥
tit tan mail na lag-ee sach ghar jis otaak..
The person whose mind is always attuned to the service of God is never soiled with filth (of worldly attachments).
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਨੂੰ ਮਲੀਨਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੰਬੜਦੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਕੁ ॥੫॥
nadar karay sach paa-ee-ai bin naavai ki-aa saak. ||5||
It is only when God casts His merciful glance, one obtains His Eternal Naam and relationship with Him cannot be established without meditating on Naam.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੇ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
jinee sach pachhaani-aa say sukhee-ay jug chaar.
Those who have realized the Truth are at peace throughout the four ages.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
ha-umai tarisnaa maar kai sach rakhi-aa ur Dhaar.
Subduing their egotism and desires, they keep the True Name enshrined in their hearts.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੬॥
jag meh laahaa ayk naam paa-ee-ai gur veechaar. ||6||
In this world, the true profit is God’s Name which is earned by contemplating the Guru’s word.
ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਖਟਣਾ ਉਚਿਤ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਖਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੋਚ-ਵੀਚਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਾਚਉ ਵਖਰੁ ਲਾਦੀਐ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
saacha-o vakhar laadee-ai laabh sadaa sach raas.
Acquire the commodity of Naam, and this commodity always yield spiritual gains.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੀ ਜੋੜਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉਹ) ਨਫ਼ਾ (ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਸਦਾ (ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਈ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਚੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
saachee dargeh bais-ee bhagat sachee ardaas.
They who are imbued with true devotion and make a sincere prayer are granted seat in God’s court.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੭॥
pat si-o laykhaa nibrhai raam naam pargaas. ||7||
Being enlightened with God’s Name, their account (of good and bad deeds) is settled with honor.
ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖਾ (ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਊਚਾ ਊਚਉ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
oochaa oocha-o aakhee-ai kaha-o na daykhi-aa jaa-ay.
O’ God, You are higher than the highest, but simply by saying, You cannot be perceived.
ਬੁਲੰਦਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਰਮ-ਬੁਲੰਦ, ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਭੀ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥
jah daykhaa tah ayk tooN satgur dee-aa dikhaa-ay.
Wherever I look, I see only You. The True Guru has helped me to see You.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ, (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ) ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਜਿੱਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੮॥੩॥
jot nirantar jaanee-ai naanak sahj subhaa-ay. ||8||3||
O’ Nanak, now I intuitively see Your Divine light within all.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ l

Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਮਛੁਲੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਸਰੁ ਖਾਰਾ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ॥
machhulee jaal na jaani-aa sar khaaraa asgaahu.
Living in the fathomless briny ocean, the fish didn’t pay attention to the net.
ਮੱਛੀ ਨੇ ਨਮਕੀਨ ਤੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚਲੇ ਫੰਧੇ ਵਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਂ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਤੋ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥
at si-aanee sohnee ki-o keeto vaysaahu.
She was extremely wise and beautiful but why did she trust the bait.
(ਵੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਛੀ) ਬੜੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣੀ (ਜਾਪਦੀ) ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਲ ਦਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਸੀ।
ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਕੜੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਟਲੈ ਸਿਰਾਹੁ ॥੧॥
keetay kaaran paakrhee kaal na talai siraahu. ||1||
On her own doing, she was caught and now death cannot be avoided.
(ਜਾਲ ਉੱਤੇ) ਇਤਬਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੀ ਫੜੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਟਲਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
bhaa-ee ray i-o sir jaanhu kaal.
O’ brother, just like this, see death hovering over your head.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਸਮਝੋ।
ਜਿਉ ਮਛੀ ਤਿਉ ਮਾਣਸਾ ਪਵੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ji-o machhee ti-o maansaa pavai achintaa jaal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
People are just like this fish; unaware, the noose of death descends upon them.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਚਨਚੇਤ (ਮਾਛੀ ਦਾ) ਜਾਲ ਆ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਅਚਨਚੇਤ ਮੌਤ ਆ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧੋ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਲੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥
sabh jag baaDho kaal ko bin gur kaal afaar.
The entire world is subject to death (not once but countless times); without seeking the refuge of the Guru, the fear of death is inevitable.
ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਦਾ ਬੱਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ (ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ) ਅਮਿੱਟ ਹੈ l
ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
sach ratay say ubray dubiDhaa chhod vikaar.
They who are imbued with the love of eternal God, forsake duality and vices, and are saved from the fear of death.
ਜੋ ਸੱਚ, ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀਜੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਤੇ ਪਾਪ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥੨॥
ha-o tin kai balihaarnai dar sachai sachiaar. ||2||
I dedicate myself to such devotees, who are recognized as true and honest in God’s court.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਸੀਚਾਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਪੰਖੀਆ ਜਾਲੀ ਬਧਿਕ ਹਾਥਿ ॥
seechaanay ji-o pankhee-aa jaalee baDhik haath.
Think of the hawk preying on the birds, and the net in the hands of the hunter.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬਾਜ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਲ ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਹਨ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ)
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਫਾਥੇ ਚੋਗੈ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
gur raakhay say ubray hor faathay chogai saath.
Those who are protected by the Guru are saved; the rest are caught by the bait.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ-ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲੇ, ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਚੋਗੇ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਜਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਗਏ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਚੁਣਿ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੰਗੀ ਸਾਥਿ ॥੩॥
bin naavai chun sutee-ah ko-ay na sangee saath. ||3||
Without God’s Name, they are picked up and thrown away; they have no friends or companions.
ਹਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਉਹ ਦੋਸਤ ਵਿਹੂਣ ਤੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਰਹਿਤ ਚੁਗ ਕੇ ਪਰੇ ਵਗਾਹ ਦਿਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
sacho sachaa aakhee-ai sachay sachaa thaan.
we should always meditate on the truest of the true God, whose seat is eternal.
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
jinee sachaa mani-aa tin man sach Dhi-aan.
Those who accept Him as True, attune their minds to Him.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਦੀ ਲਿਵ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਚੇ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੪॥
man mukh soochay jaanee-ahi gurmukh jinaa gi-aan. ||4||
Pure are deemed the thoughts and words of those who, through the Guru, obtained the divine knowledge.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਵ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
satgur agai ardaas kar saajan day-ay milaa-ay.
Offer your most sincere prayers to the True Guru, so that He may unite you with God, your Best Friend.
(ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਅੱਗੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ, (ਗੁਰੂ) ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਜਨਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
saajan mili-ai sukh paa-i-aa jamdoot mu-ay bikh khaa-ay.
Upon meeting this divine friend, you would obtain so much peace as if the demon of death has died by eating poison.
ਜੇ ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਮਦੂਤ ਤਾਂ (ਇਉਂ ਸਮਝੋ ਕਿ) ਜ਼ਹਰ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਨਾਵੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਉ ਵਸਾਂ ਨਾਉ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੫॥
naavai andar ha-o vasaaN naa-o vasai man aa-ay. ||5||
I wish that I may dwell in Naam and Naam may keep dwelling within my mind.
(ਜੇਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ) ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
baajh guroo gubaar hai bin sabdai boojh na paa-ay.
Without the Guru, there is pitch darkness of ignorance. Way out of this darkness cannot be found without the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ-ਘੁੱਪ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਸਮਝ ਸੋਚ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
gurmatee pargaas ho-ay sach rahai liv laa-ay.
Through the Guru’s teachings, the divine Light shines (in the mind), and the mortal remains absorbed in the love of eternal God.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਰੱਬੀ-ਨੂਰ ਚਮਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸੱਚੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਸਨੇਹ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੰਚਰੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
tithai kaal na sanchrai jotee jot samaa-ay. ||6||
In that state of mind, one is beyond the reach of death; because then the one’s light remains merged in the divine Light.
ਉਥੇ ਮੌਤ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ (ਆਤਮਾ) ਵਡੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
tooNhai saajan tooN sujaan tooN aapay maylanhaar.
You are my Best Friend; You are All-knowing. You are the One who unites us with Yourself.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੁਖ-ਦਰਦ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਹੈਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
gur sabdee salaahee-ai ant na paaraavaar.
We praise you through the Guru’s word, even though there is no end or limit to you virtues.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਂਵ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਅੰਤ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ l
ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਅਪੜੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
tithai kaal na aprhai jithai gur kaa sabad apaar. ||7||
Death does not reach that place, where the Infinite Word of the Guru resounds.
ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਥੇ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਭੇ ਊਪਜਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
hukmee sabhay oopjahi hukmee kaar kamaahi.
It’s by God’s will that all are created, and all perform their assigned tasks according to His command.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
hukmee kaalai vas hai hukmee saach samaahi.
By His Command, all are subject to death; by His Command, they lovingly remember the eternal God.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੈ, ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਇਨਾ ਜੰਤਾ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੮॥੪॥
nanak jo tis bhaavai so thee-ai inaa janta vas kichh naahi. ||8||4||
O’ Nanak, whatever pleases His Will comes to pass. Nothing is in the hands of these beings.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ

Siree Raag, by the First Guru:
ਮਨਿ ਜੂਠੈ ਤਨਿ ਜੂਠਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜੂਠੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
man joothai tan jooth hai jihvaa joothee ho-ay.
if one’s mind has been polluted by the vices, then the body also becomes polluted (engaging in vices) and the tongue becomes polluted as well.
ਜੋ ਆਤਮਾ ਅਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਦੇਹਿ ਅਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜ਼ਬਾਨ।
