ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰ ਦੇਇ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
binvant naanak kar day-ay raakho gobind deen da-i-aaraa. ||4||
Nanak prays, O’ God, the merciful master of the meek, extend your help and save me from drowning in the love for Maya. ||4||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,ਹੇ ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਆਪਣਾ ਹੱਥ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਣੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈ ॥੪॥
ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਗਣਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
so din safal gani-aa har parabhoo milaa-i-aa raam.
That day is judged to be fruitful, when the Guru unites one with God.
ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ) ਮਿਲਾਇਆ (ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਗਟਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰਿ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
sabh sukh pargati-aa dukh door paraa-i-aa raam.
Total peace is revealed and sorrows are e taken far away.
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਜਾ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਅਨਦ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਗੁਨ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
sukh sahj anad binod sad hee gun gupaal nit gaa-ee-ai.
One forever enjoys celestial peace, poise, bliss and happiness by always singing the praises of God.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਿੱਤ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ-ਆਨੰਦ ਅਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਭਜੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਧਾਈਐ ॥
bhaj saaDhsangay milay rangay bahurh jon na Dhaa-ee-ai.
By lovingly meditating on God, in the company of the saints, one does not wander in various incarnations.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਈਦਾ,
ਗਹਿ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਏ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ਆਦਿ ਅੰਕੁਰੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
geh kanth laa-ay sahj subhaa-ay aad ankur aa-i-aa.
One’s preordained destiny is realized when God intuitively unites one with Himself.
ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਸਹਿਜ-ਸੁਭਾ ਹੀ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਗਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਇਉਂ ਮੁਢ ਦਾ ਅੰਗੂਰ ਪੁੰਗਰ ਆਇਆ।
ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਕਤਹੂ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੪॥੭॥
binvant naanak aap mili-aa bahurh kathoo na jaa-i-aa. ||5||4||7||
Nanak submits, God never goes away from him, whom He has united with Himself. ||5||4||7||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਟਕੀਦਾ ॥੫॥੪॥੭॥

O’ my Master, please listen to my supplications.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ।
ਕੋਟਿ ਅਪ੍ਰਾਧ ਭਰੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
kot apraaDh bharay bhee tayray chayray raam.
Even though we are full of millions of sins, still we are Your disciples.
ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਬੜੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਹਾਂ।
ਦੁਖ ਹਰਨ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਨ ਮੋਹਨ ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸਹ ਭੰਜਨਾ ॥
dukh haran kirpaa karan mohan kal kalayseh bhanjnaa.
O’ destroyer of pain, bestower of mercy, enticer of hearts, dispeller of sorrow and strife,
ਹੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ! ਹੇ ਮੋਹਨ! ਹੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਸਰਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਮੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ॥
saran tayree rakh layho mayree sarab mai niranjanaa.
all-pervading and immaculate God, I have come to Your refuge, save my honor.
ਹੇ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ! ਹੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ।
ਸੁਨਤ ਪੇਖਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਭ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨੇਰਹੂ ਤੇ ਨੇਰੇ ॥
sunat paykhat sang sabh kai parabh nayrhoo tay nayray.
O’ God, You listen and see everything, You are with all and nearest of the near.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਤੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰਮ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ।
ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਘਰ ਕੇ ਚੇਰੇ ॥੧॥
ardaas naanak sun su-aamee rakh layho ghar kay chayray. ||1||
O’ my Master, listen to Nanak’s prayer; I am Your devotee, please save my honor. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ ॥੧॥
ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸਦਾ ਹਮ ਦੀਨ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
too samrath sadaa ham deen bhaykhaaree raam.
O’ God, You are eternal and all-powerful; we are mere beggars.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਗਨੁ ਕਢਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi magan kadh layho muraaree raam.
O’ God, we are immersed in the love of Maya, save us from it.
ਹੇ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ! ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੱਢ ਲੈ।
ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਅਨਿਕ ਦੋਖ ਕਮਾਵਨੇ ॥
lobh mohi bikaar baaDhi-o anik dokh kamaavanay.
Bound by greed, emotional attachment and vices, we commit countless sins.
ਮੈਂ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ, ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਅਲਿਪਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਰਹਤ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੀਆ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਾਵਨੇ ॥
alipat banDhan rahat kartaa kee-aa apnaa paavnay.
The Creator is detached from attachments and free from entanglements, but we human beings suffer for our misdeeds.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਤਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਭੁਗਤਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਕਰਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਤੇ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
kar anoograhu patit paavan baho jon bharamtay haaree.
O’ God, the purifier of sinners, bestow mercy on me; I am so tired of wandering through many reincarnation.
ਹੇ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ (ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ) ਥੱਕ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
binvant naanak daas har kaa parabh jee-a paraan aDhaaree. ||2||
Nanak submits that he is the devotee of that God who is the mainstay of the life of all creatures. ||2||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਵਡਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਥੋਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
too samrath vadaa mayree mat thoree raam.
O’ God, You are great and all-powerful but my intellect is very shallow.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਵੱਡੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਅਕਲ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੈ
ਪਾਲਹਿ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਨਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
paaleh akirat-ghanaa pooran darisat tayree raam.
O’ God, You cherish even the ungrateful ones; Your glance of grace is perfect.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਸਦਾ ਇਕ-ਸਾਰ ਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਨਾ-ਸ਼ੁਕਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧਿ ਅਪਾਰ ਕਰਤੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
agaaDh boDh apaar kartay mohi neech kachhoo na jaanaa.
O’ the incomprehensible, limitless and divinely knowledgeable Creator, I am lowly and do not know anything.
ਹੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ! ਹੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ (ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਬਤ) ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਰਤਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਨ ਕਉਡੀ ਪਸੂ ਨੀਚੁ ਇਆਨਾ ॥
ratan ti-aag sangrehan ka-udee pasoo neech i-aanaa.
Forsaking the priceless Naam, I keep amassing the worthless worldly wealth; I am a lowly, ignorant and foolish like a beast.
ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਕਉਡੀਆਂ ਇਕੱਠੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਪਸੂ-ਸੁਭਾਉ ਹਾਂ, ਨੀਵਾਂ ਹਾਂ, ਅੰਞਾਣ ਹਾਂ।
ਤਿਆਗਿ ਚਲਤੀ ਮਹਾ ਚੰਚਲਿ ਦੋਖ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੋਰੀ ॥
ti-aag chaltee mahaa chanchal dokh kar kar joree.
By committing sins I kept amassing that Maya, the worldly wealth; which is very fickle, it easily forsakes its hoarder.
ਮੈਂ ਪਾਪ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਕਦੇ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੈਠਦੀ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਸਮਰਥ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮੋਰੀ ॥੩॥
naanak saran samrath su-aamee paij raakho moree. ||3||
O’ my Almighty Master-God, I have come to Your refuge, please save my honor, says Nanak. ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੇ ਸਭ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਵੀਛੁੜਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
jaa tay veechhurhi-aa tin aap milaa-i-aa raam.
God Himself united that person with Him, from whom he was separated for long,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਚਿਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ,
ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਮੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
saaDhoo sangmay har gun gaa-i-aa raam.
when he started singing God’s praises in the company of the Guru.
ਜਦ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਗੋਵਿਦ ਸਦਾ ਨੀਕੇ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਮੈ ਪਰਗਟ ਭਏ ॥
gun gaa-ay govid sadaa neekay kali-aan mai pargat bha-ay.
By always singing beautiful praises of the Master of the universe, the blissful God became manifest in the heart.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਗੀਤ ਸਦਾ ਗਾਣ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਨੰਦ-ਸਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਗਏ।
ਸੇਜਾ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਿ ਲਏ ॥
sayjaa suhaavee sang parabh kai aapnay parabh kar la-ay.
Now his heart is adorned with God’s presence and He has made him His own.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਸੇਜ ਸਸ਼ੋਭਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ (ਸੇਵਕ) ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ
ਛੋਡਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਅਚਿੰਤ ਹੋਏ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
chhod chint achint ho-ay bahurh dookh na paa-i-aa.
By shedding anxiety, one becomes free of worries, and is not afflicted with any sorrow after that.
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ-ਚਿਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਜੀਵੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥੮॥
naanak darsan paykh jeevay govind gun niDh gaa-i-aa. ||4||5||8||
O’ nanak, those who sing praises of God, the treasure of virtues, get spiritually rejuvenated upon realizing His presence within themselves. ||4||5||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੫॥੮॥

O’ the man of sublime faith, chant God’s praises; why are you silent?
ਹੇ ਉੱਤਮ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਵਾਲੇ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਕਰ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਚੁੱਪ ਵੱਟੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ?
ਤੂ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
too naytree daykh chali-aa maa-i-aa bi-uhaaree raam.
See with your eyes that one who deals only with Maya, departs with nothing.
ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ; ਨਿਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਥੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਿਨਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
sang tayrai kachh na chaalai binaa gobind naamaa.
Except God’s Name, nothing else can accompany you to the next world.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਦੇਸ ਵੇਸ ਸੁਵਰਨ ਰੂਪਾ ਸਗਲ ਊਣੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥
days vays suvran roopaa sagal oonay kaamaa.
All the pursuits for the sake of dominions, dresses, gold and silver are useless.
ਦੇਸਾਂ (ਦੇ ਰਾਜ), ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਸੋਨਾ, ਚਾਂਦੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ।
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਹਸਤ ਘੋਰਿ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
putar kaltar na sang sobhaa hasat ghor vikaaree.
Children, spouse, worldly glory do not accompany one in the end; expensive possessions such as elephants and horses lead one to evil habits.
ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ- ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ । ਹਾਥੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਭੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਮ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
binvant naanak bin saaDhsangam sabh mithi-aa sansaaree. ||1||
Nanak submits that without the company of saintly persons, all the worldly efforts are false. ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
