jan naanak daas daas ko karee-ahu mayraa moond saaDh pagaa hayth rulsee ray. ||2||4||37||
Devotee Nanak prays, make me the servant of Your devotees and let me serve them with such humility as if my head rolls under their feet. ||2||4||37||

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭ ਦਿਨ ਕੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਪੰਥ ਬਿਠੁਲੇ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
sabh din kay samrath panth bithulay ha-o bal bal jaa-o.
O’ my all-powerful beloved, the kindly torch bearer of our path, forever I am dedicated to You.
ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਗ ਦਰਸਾਉਣਹਾਰ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਵਾਨ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਉਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ।
ਗਾਵਨ ਭਾਵਨ ਸੰਤਨ ਤੋਰੈ ਚਰਨ ਉਵਾ ਕੈ ਪਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gaavan bhaavan santan torai charan uvaa kai paa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, bless me with the humble service of those saints of Yours who sing Your praise and are pleasing to You. ||1||Pause||
ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਦੱਸਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਾਸਨ ਬਾਸਨ ਸਹਜ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮੈ ਏਕ ਅਨੰਤ ਅਨੂਪੈ ਠਾਉ ॥੧॥
jaasan baasan sahj kayl karunaa mai ayk anant anoopai thaa-o. ||1||
O’ immaculate Master, show mercy and bless me that I may remain in the humble service of your Saints who do not have any worldly desires; and who in a state of peace and poise remain in Your limitless and unique presence. ||1||
ਹੇ ਤਰਸ-ਸਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਾਂ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਕਰ ਤਲ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਨਾਥ ਅਨੇਕੈ ਨਾਉ ॥
riDh siDh niDh kar tal jagjeevan sarab naath anaykai naa-o.
O’ God, the life of this world, You have all the miraculous powers in the palm of Your hand; O’ the Master-God of all, You are known by many Names.
ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਰਿਧੀਆਂ ਸਿਧੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਨਿਧੀਆਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਲੀਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,! ਹੇ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਸਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਹਨ।
ਦਇਆ ਮਇਆ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਜਸੁ ਜੀਵਾਉ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੮॥੬॥੪੪॥
da-i-aa ma-i-aa kirpaa naanak ka-o sun sun jas jeevaa-o. ||2||1||38||6||44||
O’ God, show kindness, compassion and mercy on Nanak so that he may keep spiritually rejuvenating by listening to Your praises. ||2||1||38||6||44||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਉੱਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰ, ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕਿ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ) ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੮॥੬॥੪੪॥

ਯਹ ਮਨੁ ਨੈਕ ਨ ਕਹਿਓ ਕਰੈ ॥
yeh man naik na kahi-o karai.
This mind does not obey my instructions, even a little bit.
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ।
ਸੀਖ ਸਿਖਾਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਅਪਨੀ ਸੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਨ ਟਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
seekh sikhaa-ay rahi-o apnee see durmat tay na tarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I am so tired of advising it again and again, but still it does not desist from its evil intentions. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਖੋਟੀ ਮਤਿ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਭਇਓ ਬਾਵਰੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਨਹਿ ਉਚਰੈ ॥
mad maa-i-aa kai bha-i-o baavro har jas neh uchrai.
Under the intoxication of Maya (worldly riches and power), it has gone crazy and never utters praises of God.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਇਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ,
ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਜਗਤ ਕਉ ਡਹਕੈ ਅਪਨੋ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰੈ ॥੧॥
kar parpanch jagat ka-o dahkai apno udar bharai. ||1||
By making all kinds of false shows, it deceives the world to fill its belly. ||1||
ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, (ਠੱਗੀ ਨਾਲ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਧਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਆਪਣਾ ਪੇਟ ਭਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਸੂਧੋ ਕਹਿਓ ਨ ਕਾਨ ਧਰੈ ॥
su-aan poochh ji-o ho-ay na sooDho kahi-o na kaan Dharai.
Just as the tail of a dog doesn’t get straightened by any means, similarly, this mind doesn’t listen what is said to it by anyone.
ਕੁੱਤੇ ਦੀ ਪੂਛਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀ) ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਦਾ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਤ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਜੁ ਸਰੈ ॥੨॥੧॥
kaho naanak bhaj raam naam nit jaa tay kaaj sarai. ||2||1||
Nanak says, always meditate on God’s Name, so that your purpose of human life (union with God) may be accomplished.||2||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ, ਆਖ! ਰੋਜ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਨਮ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਹੱਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੨॥੧॥

ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜੀਵਤ ਕੋ ਬਿਵਹਾਰ ॥
sabh kichh jeevat ko bivhaar.
Only during the time one is alive, all the interaction are relevant with people
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਿਊਂਦਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਮੇਲ-ਜੋਲ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਅਰੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maat pitaa bhaa-ee sut banDhap ar fun garih kee naar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
including one’s mother, father, siblings, children, relatives and spouse. |1|Pause|
ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਭਰਾ, ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਭੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹੋਤ ਜਬ ਨਿਆਰੇ ਟੇਰਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਤਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ॥
tan tay paraan hot jab ni-aaray tayrat parayt pukaar.
As soon as the last breaths are separated from the body, all the relatives loudly call the human being as a ghost.
ਜਦੋਂ ਜਿੰਦ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਧ ਘਰੀ ਕੋਊ ਨਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਦੇਤ ਨਿਕਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
aaDh gharee ko-oo neh raakhai ghar tay dayt nikaar. ||1||
Then, no relative wants to keep the body even for half an hour, and are anxious to ake it out of the house. ||1||
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਅੱਧੀ ਘੜੀ ਲਈ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ, ਘਰ ਤੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਯਹ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥
marig tarisnaa ji-o jag rachnaa yeh daykhhu ridai bichaar.
Reflect in your mind and see it for yourself that this worldly play is like a mirage.
ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਵੋ, ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਖੇਡ ਠਗ-ਨੀਰੇ (ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ੱਅਕ ਧੋਖੇ) ਵਾਂਗ ਹੈ l
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਜੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਤ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥੨॥੨॥
kaho naanak bhaj raam naam nit jaa tay hot uDhaar. ||2||2||
Nanak says, always meditate on God’s Name doing which you would be liberated from worldly attachments.||2||2||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ-ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥

Raag Devgandhari, Ninth Guru:
ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਦੇਖੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
jagat mai jhoothee daykhee pareet.
I have observed that any love between individuals in this world is false.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ (ਸਨਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਦਾ) ਪਿਆਰ ਮੈਂ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੀ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਅਪਨੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਸਭ ਲਾਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਦਾਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
apnay hee sukh si-o sabh laagay ki-aa daaraa ki-aa meet. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whether they are spouses or friends, all are concerned only with their own happiness. ||1||Pause||
ਚਾਹੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੈ ਚਾਹੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਹਨ-ਸਾਰੇ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਖ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਤੁਰੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮੇਰਉ ਮੇਰਉ ਸਭੈ ਕਹਤ ਹੈ ਹਿਤ ਸਿਉ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਚੀਤ ॥
mayra-o mayra-o sabhai kahat hai hit si-o baaDhi-o cheet.
Everybody’s mind is tied to worldly attachments, therefore all claim that he is mine, he is mine
ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਇਹੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ‘ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੈ’, ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਚਿੱਤ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਲ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਸੰਗੀ ਨਹ ਕੋਊ ਇਹ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੈ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥
ant kaal sangee nah ko-oo ih achraj hai reet. ||1||
But, at the time of death, no one becomes one’s companion; this is the strange tradition of the world. ||1||
ਪਰ ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ। (ਜਗਤ ਦੀ) ਇਹ ਅਚਰਜ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਚਲੀ ਆ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਜਹੂ ਨਹ ਸਮਝਤ ਸਿਖ ਦੈ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਨੀਤ ॥
man moorakh ajhoo nah samjhat sikh dai haari-o neet.
O’ foolish mind, I have grown weary of instructing you every day, but you still have not understood this reality (about the transitory nature of world).
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਤੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਭੀ ਅਕਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ਜਉ ਗਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਗੀਤ ॥੨॥੩॥੬॥੩੮॥੪੭॥
naanak bha-ojal paar parai ja-o gaavai parabh kay geet. ||2||3||6||38||47||
O’ Nanak, when one sings praises of God, then one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean of vices. ||2||3||6||38||47||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ, ਆਖ! ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੩॥੬॥੩੮॥੪੭॥
