ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੀਐ ਚਰਣ ਰੇਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਬਾਛੈ ॥੧॥
saaDhsangat kee sarnee paree-ai charan rayn man baachhai. ||1||
I should seek the refuge of holy congregation, my mind longs only for the humble service of the saints. ||1||
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਗੁਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਮਾਇ ਆਛੈ ॥
jugat na jaanaa gun nahee ko-ee mahaa dutar maa-ay aachhai.
I do not have any virtues nor I know how to swim across the worldly ocean of Maya, which is so difficult to cross.
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਢੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਗੁਣ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਇ ਪਇਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਤਉ ਉਤਰੀ ਸਗਲ ਦੁਰਾਛੈ ॥੨॥੨॥੨੮॥
aa-ay pa-i-o naanak gur charnee ta-o utree sagal duraachhai. ||2||2||28||
O’ Nanak, I have followed the Guru’s teachings and all my evil desires have vanished. ||2||2||28||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈ ਆ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਡਿੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮੰਦੀਆਂ-ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ॥੨॥੨॥੨੮॥

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਬਚਨ ਤੁਹਾਰੇ ॥
amritaa pari-a bachan tuhaaray.
O’ beloved God, the words of Your praises are spiritually rejuvenating.
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ;
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮਨਮੋਹਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਭਹੂ ਮਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
at sundar manmohan pi-aaray sabhhoo maDh niraaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ extremely beautiful, heart-captivating beloved God, You are amidst everyone and yet detached from everyone. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁੰਦਰ! ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੋਹਣ! ਹੇ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਰਾਜੁ ਨ ਚਾਹਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਚਾਹਉ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲਾਰੇ ॥
raaj na chaaha-o mukat na chaaha-o man pareet charan kamlaaray.
I do not seek kingdom, nor I seek liberation from the cycles of birth and death; all my mind longs for is the love of Your immaculate Name.
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਰਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦਾ, ਮੈਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦਾ, ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਕੋਮਲ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ। ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਹੇਸ ਸਿਧ ਮੁਨਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹੀ ਦਰਸਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
barahm mahays siDh mun indraa mohi thaakur hee darsaaray. ||1||
Others may long for the sight of deities like Brahma, Shiva, Indira, or sages, and sidhas, but I only seek the blessed vision of my Master-God.||1||
ਲੋਕ ਤਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਜੋਗੀ, ਰਿਸ਼ੀ, ਮੁਨੀ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਹੀ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਦੀਨੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਇਓ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਸੰਤ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
deen du-aarai aa-i-o thaakur saran pari-o sant haaray.
O’ my Master-God: I, the helpless and exhausted one, have come to the refuge of Your saints.
ਹੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ! ਮੈਂ ਗਰੀਬ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲੇ ਮਨੋਹਰ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲ ਬਿਗਸਾਰੇ ॥੨॥੩॥੨੯॥
kaho naanak parabh milay manohar man seetal bigsaaray. ||2||3||29||
Nanak says, I have realized the heart captivating God and my mind is cooled and delighted. ||2||3||29||
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਠੰਢੀ ਤੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੩॥੨੯॥

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿਓ ॥
har jap sayvak paar utaari-o.
By remembering God, a devotee is helped to cross over the world-ocean of vices.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਪਨੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
deen da-i-aal bha-ay parabh apnay bahurh janam nahee maari-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The merciful God becomes that devotee’s own and He does not subject that devotee to the cycles of birth and death. ||1||Pause||
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਮਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਰਿਓ ॥
saaDhsangam gun gaavah har kay ratan janam nahee haari-o.
He sings praises of God in the company of the saints, and this way does not waste this jewel like precious human life.
ਸਤਿ ਸੰਗਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀਰੇ ਵਰਗੇ, ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ।
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਨੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਧਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥
parabh gun gaa-ay bikhai ban tari-aa kulah samooh uDhaari-o. ||1||
By singing praises of God, he swims across this poisonous worldly ocean and even saves all his generations as well.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਆਪ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਬਸਿਆ ਰਿਦ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਉਚਾਰਿਓ ॥
charan kamal basi-aa rid bheetar saas giraas uchaari-o.
God’s immaculate Name remains enshrined within his heart and he recites Naam with every breath and morsel of food.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਚਰਨ ਸਦਾ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਜਗਦੀਸੁਰ ਪੁਨਹ ਪੁਨਹ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਿਓ ॥੨॥੪॥੩੦॥
naanak ot gahee jagdeesur punah punah balihaari-o. ||2||4||30||
O’ Nanak, he has grasped on to the support of the Master of the universe and I am dedicated to such a devotee again and again.||2||4||30||

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਤ ਫਿਰੇ ਬਨ ਭੇਖ ਮੋਹਨ ਰਹਤ ਨਿਰਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karat firay ban bhaykh mohan rahat niraar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Those who keep roaming in jungles in holy garbs, the fascinating God remains aloof from them. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਿਆਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਥਨ ਸੁਨਾਵਨ ਗੀਤ ਨੀਕੇ ਗਾਵਨ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਧਰਤੇ ਗਾਰ ॥੧॥
kathan sunaavan geet neekay gaavan man meh Dhartay gaar. ||1||
They discourse, preach and sing melodious songs, but their minds are filled with the filth of arrogance, and evil intentions.||1||
ਉਹ ਵਖਿਆਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਚੰਗੇ ਗਾਉਣ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਹੁ ਚਤੁਰ ਸਿਆਨੇ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਰਸਨਾ ਚਾਰ ॥੨॥
at sundar baho chatur si-aanay bidi-aa rasnaa chaar. ||2||
Because of their education, they may speak very sweetly, may appear very beautiful, extremely clever and wise.||2||
ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਵੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ, ਚਤੁਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਮੇਰ ਤੇਰ ਬਿਬਰਜਿਤ ਏਹੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ॥੩॥
maan moh mayr tayr bibarjit ayhu maarag khanday Dhaar. ||3||
To remain unaffected by pride, emotional attachment and the sense of ‘mine and yours’ is very difficult; it is like walking on the edge of a sword. ||3||
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ, ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ, ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਤੋਂ, ਬਚੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ-ਇਹ ਰਸਤਾ ਖੰਡੇ ਦੀ ਧਾਰ ਵਰਗਾ ਬਰੀਕ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੀਅਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤ ਸੰਗਾਰ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥
kaho naanak tin bhavjal taree-alay parabh kirpaa sant sangaar. ||4||1||31||
Nanak says, he alone is able to swim across the terrifying world-ocean of vices, who by God’s grace joins the company of saints. ||4||1||31||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਰੀ ਊਚਾ ਮੋਹਨੁ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥
mai paykhi-o ree oochaa mohan sabh tay oochaa.
O’ my friends, I have seen the most captivating God, who is the highest of all.
ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬਹੁਤ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਨ ਨ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਕੋਊ ਲਾਗੈ ਢੂਢਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਮ ਮੂਚਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aan na samsar ko-oo laagai dhoodh rahay ham moochaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
No one else is equal to Him, I have made the most extensive search. |1||Pause|
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ। ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਖੋਜ ਭਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬਹੁ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਅਤਿ ਬਡੋ ਗਾਹਰੋ ਥਾਹ ਨਹੀ ਅਗਹੂਚਾ ॥
baho bay-ant at bado gaahro thaah nahee aghoochaa.
He is extremely infinite, exceedingly great, unfathomable and is beyond reach.
ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ,ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਡੂੰਘਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੀ, ਇਤਨਾ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਤਕ ਅੱਪੜਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਤੋਲਿ ਨ ਤੁਲੀਐ ਮੋਲਿ ਨ ਮੁਲੀਐ ਕਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨ ਰੂਚਾ ॥੧॥
tol na tulee-ai mol na mulee-ai kat paa-ee-ai man roochaa. ||1||
His worth cannot be estimated and He is priceless; we do not know how can we realize such a heart-captivating God? ||1||
ਕਿਸੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੋਲਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਕਿਸੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਰੀਦਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਉਸ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭੀਏ ॥੧॥
ਖੋਜ ਅਸੰਖਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਤਪੰਥਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਹੀ ਪਹੂਚਾ ॥
khoj asankhaa anik tapanthaa bin gur nahee pahoochaa.
we may launch countless searches, may do innumerable penances, but without the Guru’s teachings, no one has ever realized him.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਭਾਲਾਂ ਕਰੀਏ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਸਤੇ ਵੇਖੀਏ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕੀਦਾ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਰਸ ਭੂੰਚਾ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੨॥
kaho naanak kirpaa karee thaakur mil saaDhoo ras bhoonchaa. ||2||1||32||
Nanak says, he on whom the Master has shown His mercy, enjoys the sublime essence of Naam by meeting the Guru and following his teachings. ||2||1||32||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੧॥੩੨॥
