ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
aath pahar har kay gun gaavai bhagat paraym ras maataa.
Absorbed in the love and devotional worship of God, he always sings His praises.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
harakh sog duhu maahi niraalaa karnaihaar pachhaataa. ||2||
Both in happiness and sorrow he remains unaffected and recognizes the Creator-God. ||2||
ਉਹ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਤੇ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਾ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਰਖਿ ਲੀਆ ਸਗਲ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥
jis kaa saa tin hee rakh lee-aa sagal jugat ban aa-ee.
That Master-God to whom he belongs has saved him from the worldly bonds and all his efforts became successful.
ਜਿਸ (ਮਾਲਕ) ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਜੁਗਤੀਆਂ ਕੰਮ ਆ ਗਈਆਂ
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਇਆਲਾ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥੧॥੯॥
kaho naanak parabh purakh da-i-aalaa keemat kahan na jaa-ee. ||3||1||9||
Nanak says, the all pervading God is always merciful to his devotees; His worth cannot be described. ||3||1||9||

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੀਏ ਕਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਸਗਲ ਕਰਤ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੋ ॥
patit pavitar lee-ay kar apunay sagal karat namaskaaro.
God sanctifies the sinners and makes them His devotees; then all pay obeisance to them.
ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਰਨੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੋਊ ਪੂਛੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਚਰਨ ਰਵਾਰੋ ॥੧॥
baran jaat ko-oo poochhai naahee baachheh charan ravaaro. ||1||
No one asks about their ancestry and social status; instead, they yearn for their humble service. ||1||
ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਰਨ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਹੈ। ਸਭ ਲੋਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਐਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੋ ॥
thaakur aiso naam tumHaaro.
O’ Master-God, such a powerful is Your wondrous Name.
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਸਚਰਜ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੋ ਧਣੀ ਕਹੀਜੈ ਜਨ ਕੋ ਅੰਗੁ ਨਿਰਾਰੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sagal sarisat ko Dhanee kaheejai jan ko ang niraaro. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Although You are called the Master of the entire world, yet the way You protect the interests of Your devotees is unique. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਸਮੂਹ ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਹੀ ਪੱਖ ਪੂਰਦਾ ਹੈ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥
saaDhsang naanak buDh paa-ee har keertan aaDhaaro.
O’ Nanak, one who comes to the holy congregation and attains immaculate wisdom, singing God’s praises becomes the mainstay of his life.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ (ਸੁਚੱਜੀ) ਅਕਲ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਦਾਸਰੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਇਓ ਚੰਮਿਆਰੋ ॥੨॥੧॥੧੦॥
naamday-o tarilochan kabeer daasro mukat bha-i-o chammi-aaro. ||2||1||10||
Namdev, Tirlochan, Kabir, and the shoemaker Ravidas, they all got liberated from the bonds of Maya by singing God’s praises. ||2||1||10||

ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਬੂਝਨਹਾਰੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਕਵਨੁ ਭਤਾ ॥
hai naahee ko-oo boojhanhaaro jaanai kavan bhataa.
There is none who has the ability to understand the real nature of God.
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਐਸਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਸਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ।
ਸਿਵ ਬਿਰੰਚਿ ਅਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਮੋਨਿ ਜਨ ਗਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਾਹਿ ਗਤਾ ॥੧॥
siv biranch ar sagal mon jan geh na sakaahi gataa. ||1||
Shiva, Brahma and all the silent sages cannot understand the state of God. ||1||
ਸ਼ਿਵ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ ਮੁਨੀ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ ॥੧॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਕਥਾ ॥
parabh kee agam agaaDh kathaa.
Any discussion about God or his actions is incomprehensible.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ (ਲੀਲ੍ਹਾ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਸੋਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰ੍ਹੇ ਹੈ
ਸੁਨੀਐ ਅਵਰ ਅਵਰ ਬਿਧਿ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਬਕਨ ਕਥਨ ਰਹਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sunee-ai avar avar biDh bujhee-ai bakan kathan rahtaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is heard to be one thing but is understood to be something else; He is beyond description and explanation. ||1||Pause||
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਬਾਰੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਸੁਣੀਦਾ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸਮਝੀਦਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ) ਦੱਸਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ॥
aapay bhagtaa aap su-aamee aapan sang rataa.
God Himself is the devotee and He Himself is the Master; He is imbued with Himself.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਭਗਤ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਸਤ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਹੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਕਤਾ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੧॥
naanak ko parabh poor rahi-o hai paykhi-o jatar kataa. ||2||2||11||
Nanak’s God is pervading everywhere; he has seen Him in all places. ||2||2||11||
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, (ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੧॥

ਮਤਾ ਮਸੂਰਤਿ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਆਇਓ ॥
mataa masoorat avar si-aanap jan ka-o kachhoo na aa-i-o.
God’s devotee doesn’t think about seeking worldly advice and suggestions.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਸਲਾਹ ਮਸ਼ਵਰਾ, ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ-ਇਹ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਹੁੜਦਾ।
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਤਹਾ ਤਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਓ ॥੧॥
jah jah a-osar aa-ay bani-o hai tahaa tahaa har Dhi-aa-i-o. ||1||
In any situation, he only remembers God with loving devotion.||1||
ਜਿੱਥੇ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮੌਕਾ ਆ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉੱਥੇ ਉੱਥੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਬਿਰਦਾਇਓ ॥
parabh ko bhagat vachhal birdaari-o.
It is the very nature of God to love His devotees;
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ-ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਭਗਤੀ (ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ) ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਲਾਡ ਲਡਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karay partipaal baarik kee ni-aa-ee jan ka-o laad ladaa-i-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He cherishes all like His children, but caresses His devotees. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ (ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਡ ਲਡਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਜਨਿ ਗਾਇਓ ॥
jap tap sanjam karam Dharam har keertan jan gaa-i-o.
A devotee of God has always sung his praises; for him this is worship, penance, austerity, and all other deeds of faith or righteousness.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੇ (ਸਦਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਸੇਵਕ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ) ਜਪ ਤਪ ਹੈ, ਸੰਜਮ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਹੈ।
ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੀ ਅਭੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੨॥੩॥੧੨॥
saran pari-o naanak thaakur kee abhai daan sukh paa-i-o. ||2||3||12||
O’ Nanak, a devotee of God, always seeks the refuge of the Master and obtains the gift of fearlessness and spiritual peace. ||2||3||12||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ) ਨਿਡਰਤਾ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੩॥੧੨॥

ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਆਰਾਧਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੋ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਢੀਲਾ ॥
din raatee aaraaDhahu pi-aaro nimakh na keejai dheelaa.
Always remember that beloved God and do not delay even for a moment.
ਉਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਰੋ, ਅੱਖ ਦੇ ਝਮਕਣ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਢਿੱਲ ਨਾਂ ਕਰੋ ।
ਸੰਤ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਲਾਈਐ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਹਾਠੀਲਾ ॥੧॥
sant sayvaa kar bhaavnee laa-ee-ai ti-aag maan haatheelaa. ||1||
Forsaking any ego and obstinacy, we should develop faith in God through devotional worship by following the Guru’s teachings. ||1||
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਹਠ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਰਧਾ ਬਣਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮੋਹਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਮਾਨ ਰਾਗੀਲਾ ॥
mohan paraan maan raageelaa.
The fascinating, playful God is the honor of my life.
ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜੇ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਸਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਹੀਅਰੇ ਕੈ ਸੰਗੇ ਪੇਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਮਨੁ ਲੀਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
baas rahi-o hee-aray kai sangay paykh mohi-o man leelaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He dwells in my heart and His wondrous play has fascinated my mind. |1||Pause|
ਉਹ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹਰੀ (ਸਦਾ) ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੌਤਕ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਤ ਅਨੰਦਾ ਉਤਰੈ ਮਨਹੁ ਜੰਗੀਲਾ ॥
jis simrat man hot anandaa utrai manhu jangeelaa.
Remembering whom, mind becomes blissful and the rust of vices is removed.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਲਬੇ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰੈ ਪਰੀਲਾ ॥੨॥੪॥੧੩॥
milbay kee mahimaa baran na saaka-o naanak parai pareelaa. ||2||4||13||
O’ Nanak, I cannot describe the glory of realizing such a God; His glory is beyond any limit or description. ||2||4||13||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮੈਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਰ੍ਹੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰ੍ਹੇ (ਬੇਅੰਤ) ਹੈ ॥੨॥੪॥੧੩॥

ਮੁਨਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਗਿ ਕਹਾਵਤ ਸਭ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਬਸਿ ਅਪਨਹੀ ॥

Maya, the worldly wealth has gained control over all those who call themselves as sages, yogis and the scholars of Shastras.
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜੋਗੀ,ਮੁਨੀ, ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਤਾ ਕਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ,ਓਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਤੀਨਿ ਦੇਵ ਅਰੁ ਕੋੜਿ ਤੇਤੀਸਾ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਹੈਰਤਿ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਰਹੀ ॥੧॥
teen dayv ar korh tayteesaa tin kee hairat kachh na rahee. ||1||
Even the astonishment of the three gods (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) and millions of angels was beyond description. ||1||
(ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ, ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ) ਤਿੰਨ ਦੇਵ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਤੇਤੀ ਕ੍ਰੋੜ ਦੇਵਤੇ- ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੈਰਾਨਗੀ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੱਦ ਨਾਹ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ॥੧॥
