ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟੇ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥੬॥
kal kalays mitay khin bheetar naanak sahj samaa-i-aa. ||4||5||6||
O’ Nanak, then in an instant, all his sins and worries are destroyed and he remains in a state of poise. ||4||5||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-) ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦੁੱਖ-ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੫॥੬॥

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਪਹਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੋ ਅਪਨੈ ਦੁਖਿ ਭਰਿਆ ॥
jis maanukh peh kara-o bayntee so apnai dukh bhari-aa.
Whoever I approach to ask for help, I find him full of his own troubles.
ਮੈਂ ਜਿਸ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੋਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਭਉ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਿਆ ॥੧॥
paarbarahm jin ridai araaDhi-aa tin bha-o saagar tari-aa. ||1||
He who has lovingly meditated upon the all pervading God from the core of his heart, he alone has crossed over the terrifying world-ocean of vices, ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਡਰ (-ਭਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਪਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੈ ॥
gur har bin ko na baritha dukh kaatai.
None but the Guru and God, can remove anyone’s pain and sorrow.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਧਿਰ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ) ਦੁੱਖ ਪੀੜ ਕੱਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਜਿ ਅਵਰ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੇ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤੁ ਜਸੁ ਘਾਟੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
parabh taj avar sayvak jay ho-ee hai tit maan mahat jas ghaatai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One’s honor, dignity and reputation are decreased by forsaking God and serving someone else. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਦਰਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਜੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸੋਭਾ ਘਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਸਨਬੰਧ ਸੈਨ ਸਾਕ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥
maa-i-aa kay san-banDh sain saak kit hee kaam na aa-i-aa.
Worldly relations and family bound through Maya are of no avail.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਹ ਸਾਕ ਸਜਣ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ (ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਵਿਰਤੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਨੀਚ ਕੁਲੁ ਊਚਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
har kaa daas neech kul oochaa tis sang man baaNchhat fal paa-i-aa. ||2||
God’s devotee, even from a low social status, is exalted; in his company one obtains the fruit of his mind’s desire. ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਜੇ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਕੁਲ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ (ਜਾਣੋ), ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਮਨ-ਇੱਛਤ ਫਲ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਈਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਲਾਖ ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਬਿੰਜਨ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨ ਬੂਝੀ ॥
laakh kot bikhi-aa kay binjan taa meh tarisan na boojhee.
Even if one may have millions of worldly dainty dishes to enjoy, still in the midst of all such luxuries, the fire of his worldly desires is not extinguished.
ਜੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਹੋਣ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਿਆਂ (ਖਾਣ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ।
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੋਟਿ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਸੂਝੀ ॥੩॥
simrat naam kot ujee-aaraa basat agochar soojhee. ||3||
By meditating on Naam, mind is enlightened with divine knowledge as if it has been illuminated with thousands of suns, and the incomprehensible wealth of Naam becomes apparent.||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ (ਅੰਦਰ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ (ਸੂਰਜਾਂ ਦਾ) ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤਕ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੩॥
ਫਿਰਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੈ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
firat firat tumHrai du-aar aa-i-aa bhai bhanjan har raa-i-aa.
O’ God, the sovereign king and the destroyer of fears, I have come to Your refuge after roaming and wandering through many births.
ਹੇ ਡਰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ! ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ
ਸਾਧ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੂਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਬਾਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥
saaDh kay charan Dhoor jan baachhai sukh naanak ih paa-i-aa. ||4||6||7||
Devotee Nanak begs for the most humble service of the Guru, in it he finds spiritual peace. ||4||6||7||
ਗੋਲਾ ਨਾਨਕ, ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਕ ਲੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਗਰਭ ਮਾਤਾ ਕੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਊਹਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਧਰਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
parathmay garabh maataa kai vaasaa oohaa chhod Dharan meh aa-i-aa.
First, one came to dwell in mother’s womb; leaving it, he came into the world.
ਜੀਵ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫਿਰ) ਉਹ ਥਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਲ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗ ਮੰਦਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਕਛਹੂ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
chitar saal sundar baag mandar sang na kachhhoo jaa-i-aa. ||1||
He enjoys the splendid mansions, beautiful gardens and palaces, but none of these go with him in the end. ||1||
(ਇਥੇ) ਚਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਬਾਗ਼ (ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਚੀਜ਼ (ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੧॥
ਅਵਰ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭ ਲਬੀ ॥
avar sabh mithi-aa lobh labee.
All other greeds and desire of the greedy are false.
ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਭ ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜੀਅ ਕਉ ਏਹਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਫਬੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur poorai dee-o har naamaa jee-a ka-o ayhaa vasat fabee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The person whom the perfect Guru has blessed with God’s Name, this Naam pleasing to that person’s soul. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਵੀਂ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਸਟ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਰਚਿ ਹਸਿਆ ॥
isat meet banDhap sut bhaa-ee sang banitaa rach hasi-aa.
One enjoys and laughs with dear friends, relatives, sons and brothers and wife,
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ, ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰ, ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਭਰਾ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੂੜਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਹੱਸਦਾ-ਖੇਡਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਬ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਆਇ ਬਨਿਓ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਕਾਲਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਆ ॥੨॥
jab antee a-osar aa-ay bani-o hai unH paykhat hee kaal garsi-aa. ||2||
but when the very last moment comes, then death seizes him right in front of their eyes. ||2||
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਅੰਤਲਾ ਸਮਾ ਆ ਪੁੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੇਂਹਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਂਹਦਿਆਂ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਆ ਫੜਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਰਥ ਬਿਹਾਝੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਦਾਮਾ ॥
kar kar anrath bihaajhee sampai su-inaa roopaa daamaa.
By continual oppression and exploitation, he accumulates wealth, gold, silver and money,
(ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਧੱਕੇ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੌਲਤ ਸੋਨਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਰੁਪਏ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾੜੀ ਕਉ ਓਹੁ ਭਾੜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਭਇਓ ਬਿਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
bhaarhee ka-o oh bhaarhaa mili-aa hor sagal bha-i-o biraanaa. ||3||
What ever he uses in his life time is the wages of his labor and the rest becomes the property of others.||3||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਾ ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ) ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਰਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਧਨ (ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ) ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਥ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਗਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
haivar gaivar rath sambaahay gahu kar keenay mayray.
He collects horses, elephants and chariots, and claims them as his own,
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ ਰਥ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੂਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਲਕੀਅਤ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ਲਾਂਮੀ ਧਾਈ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕ ਪੈਰੇ ॥੪॥
jab tay ho-ee laaNmee Dhaa-ee chaleh naahee ik pairay. ||4||
but when he sets out on the long journey of death, they will not go even one step with him. ||4||
ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਲੰਮਾ ਕੂਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਘੋੜੇ ਆਦਿਕ) ਇਕ ਪੈਰ ਭੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ) ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਰਦੇ ॥੪॥
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
naam Dhan naam sukh raajaa naam kutamb sahaa-ee.
God’s Name alone is the true wealth, source of celestial peace, family and helper.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਧਨ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਹੈ, ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਦੀਈ ਓਹ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥
naam sampat gur naanak ka-o dee-ee oh marai na aavai jaa-ee. ||5||1||8||
The Guru has blessed Nanak with the wealth of Naam; which never get destroyed, nor keeps coming and going. ||5||1||8||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਦੌਲਤ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਦੌਲਤ ਕਦੇ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕਦੇ ਗੁਆਚਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੫॥੧॥੮॥

ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਖ ਆ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
naam niDhaan satguroo drirh-aa-i-aa binas na aavai jaa-ee. ||1||
within whom the Guru has implanted the treasure of Naam; he does not deteriorate spiritually and is liberated from cycle of birth and death.||1||
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ, ਉਹ ਨਾਹ (ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ) ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੇ ॥
har jap maa-i-aa banDhan tootay.
By remembering God with loving devotion, the bonds of Maya for that person are cut away.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਛੂਟੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bha-ay kirpaal da-i-aal parabh mayray saaDhsangat mil chhootay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
On whom my merciful God becomes kind, that person is liberated from the bonds of worldly attachments by joining the holy congregation. ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਅਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
