ਨਾਮੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naamay tarisnaa agan bujhai naam milai tisai rajaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The fire of worldly desires is extinguished only through Naam; but Naam is obtained by God’s Will. ||1||Pause||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥
kal keerat sabad pachhaan.
O’ my friend, in Kalyug understand the Guru’s divine word and always sing the praises of God.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾਈ ਰੱਖ।
ਏਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
ayhaa bhagat chookai abhimaan.
It is the devotional worship through which egotism is eliminated.
ਇਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
satgur sayvi-ai hovai parvaan.
and one gets approved in God’s court by following the Guru’s teachings
ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਆਸਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
jin aasaa keetee tis no jaan. ||2||
Realize that God who has created this desire in the mind of humans. ||2||
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਸਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਦੀਜੈ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
tis ki-aa deejai je sabad sunaa-ay.
What should we offer that Guru who recites the divine word,
ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਨੂੰ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਭੇਟਾ ਦੇਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
kar kirpaa naam man vasaa-ay.
and showing mercy enshrines Naam in our mind?
ਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਾਡੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਇਹੁ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
ih sir deejai aap gavaa-ay.
We should eradicate our self-conceit and completely surrender to that Guru.
ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਅਗੇ ਇਹ ਸਿਰ ਭੇਟਾ ਕਰਕੇ (ਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ) ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹਿਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
hukmai boojhay sadaa sukh paa-ay. ||3||
One who understands God’s will, enjoys lasting celestial peace. ||3||
ਜੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਫੁਰਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਆਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
aap karay tai aap karaa-ay.
God Himself accomplishes everything by manifesting Himself in everyone.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
aapay gurmukh naam vasaa-ay.
He Himself, through the Guru, enshrines Naam in person’s heart.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
aap bhulaavai aap maarag paa-ay.
God Himself lets some go astray and puts some back on the righteous path.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੪॥
sachai sabad sach samaa-ay. ||4||
One merges in the eternal God through the divine word of God’s praises. ||4||
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੀ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
sachaa sabad sachee hai banee.
The Guru’s word uttered in God’s praises is the true divine word,
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
gurmukh jug jug aakh vakhaanee.
which the Guru’s followers have been uttering and describing in every age.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ (ਮਹਾਤਮਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼) ਇਸ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਤੇ ਕਥਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਆਏ ਹਨ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੋਲਾਣੀ ॥
manmukh mohi bharam bholaanee.
But the self-willed people have gone astray in worldly love and doubt.
ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਹਿਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਉਰਾਣੀ ॥੫॥
bin naavai sabh firai ba-uraanee. ||5||
without meditating on Naam, the entire world is wandering around insane. ||5||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਝੱਲੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
teen bhavan meh aykaa maa-i-aa.
Throughout the three worlds, influence of the same Maya has been prevailing.
ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਚਲਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੂਰਖਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥
moorakh parh parh doojaa bhaa-o drirh-aa-i-aa.
The fool has further strengthened the love for worldly things by reading scriptures again and again.
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਆਦਿਕ) ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਗੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੀ ਪੱਕਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
baho karam kamaavai dukh sabaa-i-aa.
He performs all sorts of rituals but still suffers terrible pain and misery.
ਉਹ (ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮਿਥੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਨਿਰਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
satgur sayv sadaa sukh paa-i-aa. ||6||
One always enjoys eternal peace by serving and following the teachings of the true Guru. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭੋਗੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
amrit meethaa sabad veechaar.an-din bhogay ha-umai maar.
One can always enjoy the sweet ambrosial nectar of Naam by reflecting on the Guru’s word and by eradicating ego from within.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਆਦਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਜਿ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
sahj anand kirpaa Dhaar.
Showing mercy, God keeps such persons in equipoise and bliss.
ਹਰੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੭॥
naam ratay sadaa sach pi-aar. ||7||
Imbued with the Naam, they always remain in love with the beloved God. ||7||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
har jap parhee-ai gur sabad veechaar.
O’ my friends, reflect on the Guru’s word and meditate on God’s Name
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ (ਤੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
har jap parhee-ai ha-umai maar.
Subdue your ego and meditate on God’s Name.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਭਇ ਸਚਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
har japee-ai bha-ay sach pi-aar.
Yes, we should meditate on God while remaining in His revered fear.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੩॥੨੫॥
naanak naam gurmat ur Dhaar. ||8||3||25||
O’ Nanak, follow the Guru’s teachings and enshrine Naam in your heart. |8|3|25|
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੮॥੩॥੨੫॥
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਘਰੁ ੮ ਕਾਫੀ ॥

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
gur tay saaNt oopjai jin tarisnaa agan bujhaa-ee.
Spiritual peace emanates from the Guru’s teaching, which extinguishes the fire of worldly desire.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਠੰਢ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥
gur tay naam paa-ee-ai vadee vadi-aa-ee. ||1||
We receive Naam and great glory from the Guru. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਵੱਡਾ ਆਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
ayko naam chayt mayray bhaa-ee.
O’ my brother, meditate on God’s Name alone.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ।
ਜਗਤੁ ਜਲੰਦਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jagat jalandaa daykh kai bhaj pa-ay sarnaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Seeing the humanity burning in vices, I ran to the Guru’s refuge. ||1||Pause||
ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੜਦਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸਰਨ ਦੌੜ ਕੇ ਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਮਹਾ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
gur tay gi-aan oopjai mahaa tat beechaaraa.
Spiritual wisdom, which is the supreme essence of reality, emanates from the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
gur tay ghar dar paa-i-aa bhagtee bharay bhandaaraa. ||2||
Through the Guru’s teachings I have realized God dwelling in my heart, by virtue of which my mind is full with devotional worship. ||2||
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai boojhai veechaaraa.
When we follow the Guru’s teachings and meditate on Naam, then we understand the truth.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਲਾਹ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
gurmukh bhagat salaah hai antar sabad apaaraa. ||3||
We worship and sing God’s praises through the Guru’s blessings and the divine word of the limitless God’s praises comes to reside within us. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh sookh oopjai dukh kaday na ho-ee.
Spiritual peace arises within by following the Guru’s teachings and no sorrow can ever come near.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
gurmukh ha-umai maaree-ai man nirmal ho-ee. ||4||
Our mind becomes immaculate when we conquer our ego through the Guru’s teachings. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
satgur mili-ai aap ga-i-aa taribhavan sojhee paa-ee.
Upon meeting the true Guru and by following his teachings, a person’s self-conceit goes away and he obtains the knowledge of the three words.
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਜਹਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਆਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਸਰਿ ਰਹੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
nirmal jot pasar rahee jotee jot milaa-ee. ||5||
He comes to realize that God’s immaculate light is pervading everywhere and his conscience gets attuned to the Prime soul-God. ||5||
ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੁੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਮਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਈ ॥
poorai gur samjhaa-i-aa mat ootam ho-ee.
The intellect of a person becomes sublime, when the perfect Guru imparts the knowledge about leading a spiritual life,.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ) ਸਮਝਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਅਕਲ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
antar seetal saaNt ho-ay naamay sukh ho-ee. ||6||
A cooling and soothing peace comes within and spiritual peace prevails in the mind by meditating on Naam. ||6||
ਹਿਰਦਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਕੇ) ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਂ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਈ ॥
pooraa satgur taaN milai jaaN nadar karay-ee.
One meets the Perfect True Guru only when God bestows His glance of grace.
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਭੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਪਾਪ ਸਭ ਕਟੀਅਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
kilvikh paap sabh katee-ah fir dukh bighan na ho-ee. ||7||
Then all his evils and sins are dispelled and he never suffers any pain or obstruction in life’s journey. ||7||
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੁੜ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥੭॥
