ਆਪਣੈ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਦੇ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਾਏ ॥
aapnai hath vadi-aa-ee-aa day naamay laa-ay.
All glories are in God’s hand; He attaches one to Naam through the Guru and blesses him these glories.
ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥੪॥੨੬॥
naanak naam niDhaan man vasi-aa vadi-aa-ee paa-ay. ||8||4||26||
O’ Nanak, in whose heart is enshrined the treasure of Naam receives glory both here and hereafter. ||8||4|26||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੪॥੨੬॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
sun man man vasaa-ay tooN aapay aa-ay milai mayray bhaa-ee.
Listen, O’ my mind, keep God’s Name enshrined in you: O’ my brother, by doing so, God Himself comes to meet us.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣ; ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ। ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ! ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈ ॥੧॥
an-din sachee bhagat kar sachai chit laa-ee. ||1||
Always perform true devotional worship and remain attuned to God. ||1||
ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ, ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ! ॥੧॥
ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
ayko naam Dhi-aa-ay tooN sukh paavahi mayray bhaa-ee.
O my brother, meditate on God’s Name alone, you would attain spiritual peace.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੀਰ! ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-umai doojaa door kar vadee vadi-aa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Eradicate egotism and love for worldly things from within and you would obtain great honor both here and hereafter. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਸੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਨੋ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਲੋਚਦੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
is bhagtee no sur nar mun jan lochday vin satgur paa-ee na jaa-ay.
The angels and sages long for this devotional worship, but it cannot be attained without following the true Guru’s teachings.
ਦੇਵਤੇ ਤੇ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ-ਮੁਨੀ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਹਰਿ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਦੇ ਜੋਤਿਕੀ ਤਿਨ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
pandit parh-day jotikee tin boojh na paa-ay. ||2||
The pandits and astrologers keep reading their books, but even they do not gain any understanding about devotional worship of God ||2||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਲੋਕ ਅਤੇ ਜੋਤਸ਼ੀ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਹਰਿ-ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥੨॥
ਆਪੈ ਥੈ ਸਭੁ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
aapai thai sabh rakhi-on kichh kahan na jaa-ee.
God has kept everything in His hand, therefore nothing can be said about this.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਕੁਝ ਕਿਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ l
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੩॥
aapay day-ay so paa-ee-ai gur boojh bujhaa-ee. ||3||
The Guru has given this understanding that whatever God gives us, we receive only that. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਾਈ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਿਸ ਦੇ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਈ ॥
jee-a jant sabh tis day sabhnaa kaa so-ee.
All creatures and beings are created by that God and He is the Master of all.
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਤ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਸਮ ਹੈ,
ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
mandaa kis no aakhee-ai jay doojaa ho-ee. ||4||
So how can we label anyone bad? We could do that only if there were another creator. ||4||
ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਭੈੜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ (ਭੈੜਾ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਏ, ਜੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ ॥੪॥
ਇਕੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਏਕਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
iko hukam varatdaa aykaa sir kaaraa.
The command of God alone prevails throughout the world and every one has to perform only that task which is written in his destiny.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਨੇ ਉਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ (ਲਿਖੀ ਗਈ) ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਭਵਾਲੀ ਦਿਤੀਅਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
aap bhavaalee ditee-an antar lobh vikaaraa. ||5||
God Himself has led some people astray, because of that they have greed and vices within their hearts. ||5||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲੇਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਸਦੇ ਹਨ॥੫॥
ਇਕ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੀਤਿਅਨੁ ਬੂਝਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
ik aapay gurmukh keeti-an boojhan veechaaraa.
God Himself made many people as the Guru’s followers and they understand the concept of righteous life.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਉਹ ਸਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਭੀ ਓਨਾ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੀਅਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
bhagat bhee onaa no bakhsee-an antar bhandaaraa. ||6||
God blessed them with devotional worship and filled their hearts with the treasure of Naam. ||6||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਭੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਦਿਤੇ ॥੬॥
ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਨੋ ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
gi-aanee-aa no sabh sach hai sach sojhee ho-ee.
Such spiritually wise persons behold the eternal God all around, and they become aware of the Truth.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹੀ ਸੱਚ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਓਇ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੇ ਨ ਭੁਲਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੭॥
o-ay bhulaa-ay kisai day na bhulnHee sach jaanan so-ee. ||7||
They are not led astray by anybody because they understand that the eternal God is pervading everywhere. ||7||
ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾਏ ਹੋਏ, ਉਹ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦੇ। ਉਹ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਪੰਚ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਪੰਚੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
ghar meh panch varatday panchay veechaaree.
Even though the five passions are present within these wise ones, but here these five passions are kept under control.
ਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਪੰਜ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੫॥੨੭॥
naanak bin satgur vas na aavnHee naam ha-umai maaree. ||8||5||27||
O’ Nanak, these five evils do not come under control without following the Guru’s teachings and ego is conquered only by meditating on Naam. ||8||5||27||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ,ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੫॥੨੭॥

Raag Aasaa, Third Guru:
ਘਰੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਵਥੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
gharai andar sabh vath hai baahar kichh naahee.
The wealth of Naam is within our heart; there is nothing outside.
ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਬਾਹਰ ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਚ ਢੂੰਢਿਆਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟ ਖੁਲਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
gur parsaadee paa-ee-ai antar kapat khulaahee. ||1||
This wealth of Naam is received when by the Guru’s grace, the doors of ignorance are opened. ||1||
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਬੰਦ ਕਿਵਾੜ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,॥੧॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ॥
satgur tay har paa-ee-ai bhaa-ee.
O’ my brother, God is realized only by following the true Guru’s teachings.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
antar naam niDhaan hai poorai satgur dee-aa dikhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The treasure of Naam is within all, but only the true Guru reveals it. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਵਿਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਲਏ ਪਾਏ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
har kaa gaahak hovai so la-ay paa-ay ratan veechaaraa.
One who is a seeker of the wealth of God’s Name, receives this priceless jewel- like Naam by reflecting on the Guru’s word.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦਾ ਗਾਹਕ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਦਰੁ ਖੋਲੈ ਦਿਬ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
andar kholai dib disat daykhai mukat bhandaaraa. ||2||
He becomes broad minded and through the spiritually enlightened eyes he sees the treasure of Naam which can free him from the worldly bonds. ||2||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਤਮ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਿਵਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹਲ ਅਨੇਕ ਹਹਿ ਜੀਉ ਕਰੇ ਵਸੇਰਾ ॥
andar mahal anayk heh jee-o karay vasayraa.
There are many treasures of Naam within our heart; our soul dwells within too.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹਨ, ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਭੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥
man chindi-aa fal paa-isee fir ho-ay na fayraa. ||3||
By the Guru’s grace when one understands this, then he attains the fruit of his heart’s desire and doesn’t fall in the cycles of births and deaths anymore. ||3||
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨ-ਇੱਛਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ-ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਪਾਰਖੀਆ ਵਥੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਲਈ ਗੁਰ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
paarkhee-aa vath samaal la-ee gur sojhee ho-ee.
Those appraisers of spiritual life who obtained the understanding from the Guru, cherished the Wealth of Naam in their heart.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਪਾਰਖੂਆ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੂਝ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ ਲਿਆ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਸਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੪॥
naam padaarath amul saa gurmukh paavai ko-ee. ||4||
Priceless is the wealth of Naam, but only a rare person receives it by following the Guru’s teachings. ||4||
ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਬੇ-ਮੁਲਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਬਾਹਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਲਹੈ ਵਥੁ ਘਰੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
baahar bhaalay so ki-aa lahai vath gharai andar bhaa-ee.
O’ brother, the treasure of Naam is within us; one who tries to find it outside in the wilderness does not get anything.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕ ਢੂੰਢਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ।
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੫॥
bharmay bhoolaa sabh jag firai manmukh pat gavaa-ee. ||5||
Deluded by doubt, the entire world is wandering around; the self-willed person loses his honor. ||5||
ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਛੋਡੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਝੂਠਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
ghar dar chhoday aapnaa par ghar jhoothaa jaa-ee.
To search for God outside is like the behavior of a person who forsakes his own house and goes to another’s house for worldly wealth.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਝੂਠਾ (ਠੱਗ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਘਰ-ਘਾਟ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਧਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਪਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਚੋਰੈ ਵਾਂਗੂ ਪਕੜੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਈ ॥੬॥
chorai vaaNgoo pakrhee-ai bin naavai chotaa khaa-ee. ||6||
Such a person is caught like a thief and bears punishment, similarly a person without Naam suffers blows in God’s presence. ||6||
ਉਹ ਚੋਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਫੜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਸੱਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਭਾਈ ॥
jinHee ghar jaataa aapnaa say sukhee-ay bhaa-ee.
O’ brother, those who realize God within their own hearts live in peace.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਡੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੁਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੭॥
antar barahm pachhaani-aa gur kee vadi-aa-ee. ||7||
By virtue of the greatness of the Guru, they realize God within their hearts. ||7||
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਤਾਪ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਆਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
aapay daan karay kis aakhee-ai aapay day-ay bujhaa-ee.
God Himself blesses a person with the gift of Naam and He Himself bestows understanding about Naam.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂੰ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥੮॥੬॥੨੮॥
naanak naam Dhi-aa-ay tooN dar sachai sobhaa paa-ee. ||8||6||28||
O’ Nanak, keep meditating on Naam and you would receive honor in the eternal God’s presence. ||8||6||28||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੇਗਾ ॥੮॥੬॥੨੮॥
