ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥
kanchan kaa-i-aa jot anoop.
The body of such a person becomes immaculate like pure gold because of the unparalleled beauty of the divine light of God,
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਲਾਸਾਨੀ ਨੂਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦੇਹਿ, ਸੁੱਧ ਸੋਨੇ ਵਰਗੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਗਲ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥
taribhavan dayvaa sagal saroop.
and he beholds the tangible form of God in the three worlds.
ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਜਹਾਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਸਰਗੁਣ ਸਰੂਪ ਵੇਖ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੂਟੁ ॥੪॥
mai so Dhan palai saach akhoot. ||4||
The devotees says, “this inexhaustible wealth of Naam is in my heart”. ||4||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਝੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਪੰਚ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
panch teen nav chaar samaavai.
God pervades all five elements [earth, water, fire, air, and sky], three worlds, nine regions, and the four directions,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਨੌ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਕੂਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ,
ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਕਲ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥
Dharan gagan kal Dhaar rahaavai.
He supports the earth and the sky with His power.
ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ (ਥਾਂ ਸਿਰ) ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
baahar jaata-o ulat paraavai. ||5||
God turns around the mind wandering after worldly things towards Himself. ||5||
ਸੁਆਮੀ ਬਾਹਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲ ਮੌੜ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ॥੫॥
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
moorakh ho-ay na aakhee soojhai.
That person is a fool who does not see with his eyes God pervading the universe,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
jihvaa ras nahee kahi-aa boojhai.
whose tongue has not relished the elixir of Naam and who does not understand the Guru’s teachings.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ, ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥੬॥
bikh kaa maataa jag si-o loojhai. ||6||
Intoxicated with Maya, he squabbles with the world. ||6||
ਵਿਹੁਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਇਆਉਹਜਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਝਗੜੇ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
ootam sangat ootam hovai.
One can become virtuous by associating with virtuous people.
ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸੁਹਬਤ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ) ਨਾਲ ਆਦਮੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
gun ka-o Dhaavai avgan Dhovai.
In that company he acquires virtues and washes off his sins.
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਈ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇਆਪਣੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਧੋ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥
bin gur sayvay sahj na hovai. ||7||
State of equipoise cannot be attained without the Guru’s teachings. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀਸੇਵਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ॥੭॥
ਹੀਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲੁ ॥
heeraa naam javayhar laal.
God’s Name is precious like diamonds and rubies,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਮ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੀਰੇ ਤੇ ਲਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
man motee hai tis kaa maal.
it (Naam) becomes the spiritual wealth of person whose heart is like pure pearls.
ਜੋ ਮੋਤੀ (ਵਰਗੇ ਸੁੱਚਾ) ਮਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak parkhai nadar nihaal. ||8||5||
O’ Nanak, that person becomes delightful whom the Guru sees with glance of grace. ||8||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੫॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
gurmukh gi-aan Dhi-aan man maan.
O’ brother, follow the Guru’s teachings, realize God in your heart and enjoy the bliss of meditation on God’s Name,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥
gurmukh mahlee mahal pachhaan.
By the grace of the Guru, realize God’s abode in your heart.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਪਛਾਣ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
gurmukh surat sabad neesaan. ||1||
Follow the Guru’s teachings and enshrine divine word of God’s praises in your consciousness, as an insignia. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ, (ਇਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਲਈ) ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
aisay paraym bhagat veechaaree.
By reflecting on the Guru’s word, when one performs loving devotional worship,
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh saachaa naam muraaree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
then by the Guru’s grace he realizes the eternal Name of God. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਥਾਨਿ ਸੁਥਾਨੁ ॥
ahinis nirmal thaan suthaan.
Such a person always remains immaculately pure and his heart becomes the sublime abode of God,
(ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਡੇਰਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤੀਨ ਭਵਨ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
teen bhavan nihkayval gi-aan.
and realizes God who pervades the three worlds and is unaffected by Maya.
ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਤੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
saachay gur tay hukam pachhaan. ||2||
(O’ my friend), understand God’s will from the true Guru. ||2||
(ਤੂੰ ਭੀ) ਅਭੁੱਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਚਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
saachaa harakh naahee tis sog.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings has an everlasting bliss and no sorrow.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਵਾਂ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਂਹਦੀ;
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
amrit gi-aan mahaa ras bhog.
The ambrosial nectar of Naam and divine wisdom becomes the most sublimefood for his soul.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਭੋਜਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੰਚ ਸਮਾਈ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥੩॥
panch samaa-ee sukhee sabh log. ||3||
If people eradicate their five vices (lust, anger, greed, emotional attachments and ego) then the entire world can live in peace. ||3||
(ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ॥੩॥
ਸਗਲੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
saglee jot tayraa sabh ko-ee.
O’ God, divine light pervades the entire universe and everyone belongs to You.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ (ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ) , ਤੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
aapay jorh vichhorhay so-ee.
God Himself unites people and He Himself separates them.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਫਿਰ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
aapay kartaa karay so ho-ee. ||4||
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||4||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
dhaahi usaaray hukam samaavai.
God destroys and rebuilds the universe; also by His will everything merges into Him.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਢਾਹ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੁੜ ਉਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਮੁੜ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
hukmo vartai jo tis bhaavai.
Whatever pleases Him, His command pervades accordingly.
ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
gur bin pooraa ko-ay na paavai. ||5||
Without the Guru’s teachings, no one can realize the perfect God. ||5||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੫॥
ਬਾਲਕ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਨ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਰਾਨਿ ॥
baalak biraDh na surat paraan.
One who does not attune to God during childhood or old age,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਬਚਪਨ ਜਾਂ ਬੁਢੇਪੇ ਵਿੱਚ (ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਸਮੇ) ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦੀ,
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਬੂਡੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ॥
bhar joban boodai abhimaan.
and in the prime of youth he remains drowned in ego,
ਤੇ ਭਰ-ਜਵਾਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ (ਜਵਾਨੀ ਦੇ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਲਹਸਿ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੬॥
bin naavai ki-aa lahas nidaan. ||6||
without meditating on Naam, what would he spiritually gain in the end? ||6||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਕੀਹ ਖੱਟੇਗਾ? ॥੬॥
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਅਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
jis kaa an Dhan sahj na jaanaa.
If one does not intuitively acknowledge the One who has blessed him with food and worldly wealth,
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਧਨ ਜੀਵ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ,
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥
bharam bhulaanaa fir pachhutaanaa.
deluded by doubt, he later regrets,
ਵਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਹ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਪਛਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਬਉਰਾ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥੭॥
gal faahee ba-uraa ba-uraanaa. ||7||
around the neck of such a fool is the noose of Maya ||7||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਬੂਡਤ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤਉ ਡਰਿ ਭਾਗੇ ॥
boodat jag daykhi-aa ta-o dar bhaagay.
upon seeing the world being drowned in the emotional attachments, they get scared and run away.
ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬਦਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਡਰ ਕੇ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੮॥੬॥
satgur raakhay say vadbhaagay. naanak gur kee charnee laagay. ||8||6||
O’ Nanak, these fortunate people seek the refuge of the true Guru who saves them from the emotional bonds. ||8||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਬੜੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,॥੮॥੬॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੀਤੇ ਚੀਤਿ ਅਨੀਤੇ ॥
gaavahi geetay cheet aneetay.
Those whose minds are full of evil thought but sing devotional songs for others;
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ) ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੰਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ (ਮੌਜੂਦ) ਹਨ;
ਰਾਗ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਬੀਤੇ ॥
raag sunaa-ay kahaaveh beetay.
they recite religious music and declare themselves spiritually superior.
ਉਹ ਰਾਗ ਅਲਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਨੀਤੇ ॥੧॥
bin naavai man jhooth aneetay. ||1||
But without meditating on Naam, their minds are false and wicked. ||1||
ਪਰਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਝੂਠ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਕਰਮ (ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ) ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਕਹਾ ਚਲਹੁ ਮਨ ਰਹਹੁ ਘਰੇ ॥
kahaa chalhu man rahhu gharay.
O’ mind, Why are you going after these people? Search your own heart.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ (ਕੁਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਕਿਉਂ ਭਟਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ? ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੁ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ਖੋਜਤ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh raam naam tariptaasay khojat paavhu sahj haray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By attuning to God’s Name, the Guru’s followers remain satiated and by searching within their heart,they intuitively realize Him. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ-ਸਮਰਪਨ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਉਹ ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥
kaam kroDh man moh sareeraa.
One whose mind and body is afflicted with lust, anger and emotional attachment,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮ ਹੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਹੈ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ,
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਸੁ ਪੀਰਾ ॥
lab lobh ahaNkaar so peeraa.
and is suffering from the maladies of greed and ego.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੱਬ, ਲੋਭਅਤੇ ਹੰਕਾਰਦਾ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੨॥
raam naam bin ki-o man Dheeraa. ||2||
How can his mind find any solace without meditation on God’s Name? ||2||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਟਾਕਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੨॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
antar naavan saach pachhaanai.
One who purifies his heart (by eradicating these vices), realizes the eternal God.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਨਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
antar kee gat gurmukh jaanai.
Such a Guru’s follower knows the inner state of his own mind.
ਐਸਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਲੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਹਾਲਤ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
saach sabad bin mahal na pachhaanai. ||3||
No one can realize God in his heart without the Guru‘s divine word. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
nirankaar meh aakaar samaavai.
One who sees the visible form of the universe in the formless God,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਪਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ;)
ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਟਿਕਾਵੈ ॥
akal kalaa sach saach tikaavai.
and enshrines in his heart the eternal God whose power is beyond limit,
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ, ਜਿਸਦੀ ਸੱਤਿਆ-ਗਿਣਤੀ ਮਿਣਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੪॥
so nar garabh jon nahee aavai. ||4||
such a person does not enter the cycle of births and deaths. ||4||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਰਭ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ) ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਜਹਾਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਹ ਜਾਉ ॥
jahaaN naam milai tah jaa-o.
O’ God, bless me, that I may go wherever Your Name is to be realized.
ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਿਥੋਂਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਏ, ਮੈਂ ਉਥੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਵਾਂ,
