ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥
gur parsaadee karam kamaa-o.
By the Guru’s grace, may I perform such deeds by which I may attain Naam,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਉਹੀਕੰਮ ਕਰਾਂ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇ),
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥
naamay raataa har gun gaa-o. ||5||
and imbued with Naam, may I sing God’s praise. ||5||
ਤੇਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੫॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
gur sayvaa tay aap pachhaataa.
One who has understood his inner self by following the Guru’s teachings,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
amrit naam vasi-aa sukh-daata.
has realized the peace giving ambrosial Naam in his heart.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪਿਆ (ਸਮਝੋ)।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੬॥
an-din banee naamay raataa. ||6||
By singing God’s praises he always remains imbued with the love of Naam. ||6|
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਾਏ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
mayraa parabh laa-ay taa ko laagai.
When my God blesses someone to Naam, only then is that person becomes imbued with Naam.
ਜਦੋਂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਜਾਗੈ ॥
ha-umai maaray sabday jaagai.
and by eradicating ego through the Guru’s word, he remains alert to his ego.
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਵਲੋਂ ਸਦਾ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੭॥
aithai othai sadaa sukh aagai. ||7||
Then he enjoys lasting peace both here and hereafter. ||7||
ਫਿਰ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
man chanchal biDh naahee jaanai.
The fickle mind does not know the way to eradicate his ego.
ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਦਾਤਰੀਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ,
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
manmukh mailaa sabad na pachhaanai.
A self conceited person’s mind always remains filthy from the dirt of vices; it does not understand and follow the Guru’s teachings.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਦਾ) ਮੈਲਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੮॥
gurmukh nirmal naam vakhaanai. ||8||
A Guru’s follower always meditates on Naam and remains immaculate. ||8||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
har jee-o aagai karee ardaas.
I pray to the reverend God,
ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਅੱਗੇ ਇਹ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
saaDhoo jan sangat ho-ay nivaas.
that I may always dwell in the congregation of saintly persons,
ਕਿ,ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇ,
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੯॥
kilvikh dukh kaatay har naam pargaas. ||9||
and God’s Name may become manifest in my heart, which may eradicate my sins and sufferings. ||9||
ਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚਮਕ ਪਏ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਕੱਟ ਦੇਵੇ ॥੯॥
ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥
kar beechaar aachaar paraataa.
One who deliberates on the Guru’s word understands the value of good conduct,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਚੰਗਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਬਣਾਣਾ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
satgur bachnee ayko jaataa.
and by following the true Guru’s word realizes God,
ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੧੦॥੭॥
naanak raam naam man raataa. ||10||7||
O’ Nanak, his mind is imbued with God’s Name. ||10||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ॥੧੦॥੭॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਮਨੁ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥
man maigal saakat dayvaanaa.
The mind of the faithless cynic is like a crazy elephant.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਨ ਪਾਗਲ ਹਾਥੀ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ,
ਬਨ ਖੰਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹੈਰਾਨਾ ॥
ban khand maa-i-aa mohi hairaanaa.
Distracted by the love for Maya, it keeps wandering in the world like an untamed elephant wandering in the forest
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੰਸਾਰ- ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਘਬਰਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਚਾਪੇ ॥
it ut jaahi kaal kay chaapay.
Hounded by the fear of death, it wanders here and there.
ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਦੇ ਦਬਾ ਹੇਠ ਇਹ ਐਧਰ ਓਧਰ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥੧॥
gurmukh khoj lahai ghar aapay. ||1||
But the Guru’s follower seeks and realizes God within his heart . ||1||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ॥੧॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਠਉਰਾ ॥
bin gur sabdai man nahee tha-uraa.
The mind does not stop wandering without focusing on the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨ ਇਕ ਥਾਂ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
simrahu raam naam at nirmal avar ti-aagahu ha-umai ka-uraa. ||1||
rahaa-o. Therefore, meditate on the immaculate God’s Name and renounce all other bitter worldly relishes which enhance ego. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਜੋ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਰਸ ਛੱਡੋ ਜੋ ਕੌੜੇ ਭੀ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹਸੀ ॥
ih man mugaDh kahhu ki-o rahsee.
Tell me, how can this foolish mind remain stable?
ਦੱਸੋ, ਇਹ ਮੂਰਖਮਨ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥
bin samjhay jam kaa dukh sahsee.
Without understanding its true nature, it would suffer the pain of death.
ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰੇਗਾ ਹੀ।
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ॥
aapay bakhsay satgur maylai.
One on whom God showers His grace, He unites that one with the true Guru.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪੇਲੈ ॥੨॥
kaal kantak maaray sach paylai. ||2||
The Guru eradicates his painful fear of death by coaxing him towards God. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦੁਖਦਾਈਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਚਲ ਸੁੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
ih man karmaa ih man Dharmaa.
This mind engages in faith rituals and religious deeds.
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਰੀਵਾਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਤੇ ਜਨਮਾ ॥
ih man panch tat tay janmaa.
This mind is born of the five elements (earth, ether, air, fire, and water).
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈl
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੂੜਾ ॥
saakat lobhee ih man moorhaa.
This foolish mind becomes greedy and worshipper of Maya.
ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਲਾਲਚੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੂਰਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥
gurmukh naam japai man roorhaa. ||3||
But, the mind of a person becomes spiritually elevated who follows the Guru’s teachings and meditates on Naam. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸੁੰਦਰਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
gurmukh man asthaanay so-ee.
A true follower of the Guru’s teachingskeeps his mind focused on God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਥਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh taribhavan sojhee ho-ee.
The Guru’s follower gains the knowledge about all three worlds.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਰੀਏ ਉਸ ਨੂੰਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪੈ ॥
ih man jogee bhogee tap taapai.
Sometimes this mind becomes a yogi; sometimes an enjoyer of worldly comforts and at other times it suffers the pains of penance.
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਦੇ ਜੋਗ-ਸਾਧਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਤਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੀਨੈ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੈ ॥੪॥
gurmukh cheenHai har parabh aapai. ||4||
But the Guru’s follower realizes God within himself. ||4||
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਰੀਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ,ਹਰੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਖੋਜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
man bairaagee ha-umai ti-aagee. ghat ghat mansaa dubiDhaa laagee.
Each and every heart is afflicted with duality and worldly desires, but at times it renounces ego and becomes detached from the world.
ਹਰ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਦਵੈਤ ਭਾਵ ਚਿਮੜੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ।ਪਰ ਕਦੇਇਹ ਮਨਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇਵੈਰਾਗਵਾਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਖੈ ॥
raam rasaa-in gurmukh chaakhai.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings and tastes the divine elixir,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਰਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਚੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥੫॥
dar ghar mahlee har pat raakhai. ||5||
the Master-God preserves his honor everywhere. ||5||
ਅੰਦਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਮਹਲ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮਿ ॥
ih man raajaa soor sangraam.
This mind becomes a brave king in the battle against its evil passions (lust, anger greed, worldly attachments and ego).
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਕਦੇ ਰਣ-ਭੂਮੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਜਾ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ॥
ih man nirbha-o gurmukh naam.
when it becomes fearless by meditating on Naam through the Guru’s teachings.
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਡਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
maaray panch apunai vas kee-ay.
The mind subdues the five evil passions and brings them under control,
ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ (ਵੈਰੀਆਂ) ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਥਾਇ ਕੀਏ ॥੬॥
ha-umai garaas ikat thaa-ay kee-ay. ||6||
After eradicating ego, it controls the vices. ||6||
ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਕੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਕਾਬੂ) ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਨ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥
gurmukh raag su-aad an ti-aagay.
The follower of the Guru‘s teachings renounces all worldly pleasures which take him away from God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਰਾਗ (ਦ੍ਵੈਖ) ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਸੁਆਦ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
gurmukh ih man bhagtee jaagay.
By engaging in devotional worship the mind of the Guru’s follower remains alert to the onslaught of Maya.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਹਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
anhad sun maani-aa sabad veechaaree.
By reflecting on the Guru’s word and listening to the continuous divine melody, his mind gets satiated,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ,ਅਤੇ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੀ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਨੂੰ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੭॥
aatam cheeneh bha-ay nirankaaree. ||7||
and by reflecting on the inner self, he becomes the embodiment of the formless God. ||7||
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
ih man nirmal dar ghar so-ee.
When the mind becomes pure, it sees the same God both within himself and in the universe.
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਮਨਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਾਹਰ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਧੁਨਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh bhagat bhaa-o Dhun ho-ee.
Then loving adoration of God wells up in this Guru’s follower.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ahinis har jas gur parsaad.
By the Guru’s grace he always keeps singing God’s praises.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ॥੮॥
ghat ghat so parabh aad jugaad. ||8||
A Guru’s follower sees that God in all hearts, who has been pervading even before all ages and will remain there after the end of all ages. ||8||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥
raam rasaa-in ih man maataa.
The mind becomes engrossed with the sublime elixir of God’s Name,
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
sarab rasaa-in gurmukh jaataa.
By following the Guru’s teachings, when one comes to realize God-the source sublime elixir.
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਸਭ ਰਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੋਮੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥
bhagat hayt gur charan nivaasaa.
Love for devotional worship wells up in the mind when it so obediently follows the Guru’s teachings, as if it is residing at the Guru’s feet.
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਇਸ ਮਨ ਦਾ) ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ (ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੯॥੮॥
naanak har jan kay daasan daasaa. ||9||8||
O’ Nanak, then it becomes the humble servant of God’s devotees. ||9||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਮਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥੮॥
