ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰੁ ॥
sukh maanai bhaytai gur peer.
He who meets and follows the Guru-prophet’s teachings enjoys peace.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ-ਪੀਰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਵਜੀਰੁ ॥੫॥
ayko saahib ayk vajeer. ||5||
O’ God, You alone are the King and You alone are the Minister. ||5||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ (ਸਲਾਹਕਾਰ) ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ਹੈਂ ॥੫॥
ਜਗੁ ਬੰਦੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਹਉ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
jag bandee muktay ha-o maaree.
The world is imprisoned in ego; they alone are saved who eradicate their ego.
ਜਗਤ (ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ) ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਉਹੀ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜਗਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਆਚਾਰੀ ॥
jag gi-aanee virlaa aachaaree.
In this world, rare is the wise person whose conduct is truly immaculate.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਉਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਿੱਤ-ਆਚਰਨ ਉਸ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੈ l
ਜਗਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
jag pandit virlaa veechaaree.
Rare in this world is a scholar who reflects on the Guru’s word.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨ ਭੀ ਹੈ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
bin satgur bhaytay sabh firai ahaNkaaree. ||6||
Without meeting and following the true Guru’s teachings all wander in ego. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
jag dukhee-aa sukhee-aa jan ko-ay.
Generally the humanity is miserable, rare is the person who dwells in peace.
ਜਗਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਗੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਇ ॥
jag rogee bhogee gun ro-ay.
The world is spiritually sick from indulgences in vices and is yearning for virtue.
ਜਗਤ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਰੋਗੀ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਵਿਰਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਲਈ ਤਰਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥
jag upjai binsai pat kho-ay.
Losing its honor, the humanity is going through the cycles of birth and death.
ਜਗਤ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥
gurmukh hovai boojhai so-ay. ||7||
Only the one who becomes the Guru’s follower understands this secret. ||7||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਭੇਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਮਹਘੋ ਮੋਲਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥
mahgho mol bhaar afaar.
Nothing equals God in virtues; He is realized by paying a special price such as loving devotional worship and self surrender.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਕ ਹੈ
ਅਟਲ ਅਛਲੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਧਾਰੁ ॥
atal achhal gurmatee Dhaar.
Follow the Guru’s teachings and enshrine that eternal and undeceivable God in your heart.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ-ਛਲੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ।
ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਭਇਕਾਰੁ ॥
bhaa-ay milai bhaavai bha-ikaar.
God is realized only through loving devotional worship and one who lives in His revered fear is pleasing to Him.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਲ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak neech kahai beechaar. ||8||3||
Lowly Nanak says this after deep contemplation. ||8||3||
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੩॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਏਕੁ ਮਰੈ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ॥
ayk marai panchay mil roveh.
When someone dies, one’s five closest relatives (mother, father, siblings, spouse and children) join together and mourn.
ਜਦ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਕ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ (ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ, ਭਰਾ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਪੁਤ੍ਰ) ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ,a
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵਹਿ ॥
ha-umai jaa-ay sabad mal Dhoveh.
But they who wash away the dirt of their evil thoughts by reflecting on the Guru’s word, their ego is dispelled.
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਧੋ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਮਝਿ ਸੂਝਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ॥
samajh soojh sahj ghar hoveh.
By understanding that soul never dies, they remain in a state of peace and poise at the death of a relative.
ਉਹ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਵਿਚ ਕੇ (ਕਿ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ) ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
bin boojhay saglee pat khoveh. ||1||
Without understanding this truth, they continue to grieve and lose their honor in God’s court. ||1||
ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਸਮਝ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ, ਰੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਕਉਣੁ ਮਰੈ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਓਹੀ ॥
ka-un marai ka-un rovai ohee.
Who dies and who mourns for whom?
ਕੌਣ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕੌਣ (ਮਰੇ ਨੂੰ) ‘ਉਹ, ਉਹ’ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਭਸੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਤੋਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karan kaaran sabhsai sir tohee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ the Creator-God, You are present in everyone, (therefore, one whose body dies is You and the one who cries is also You). ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ! ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ (ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਬਿਨਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਰੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
moo-ay ka-o rovai dukh ko-ay.
Rare is the one who truly mourns for the pain of the soul of the dead?
ਕੋਈ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਮਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੀ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਖਾਤਰ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਸੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੇਦਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
so rovai jis baydan ho-ay.
Only that one cries on whom befalls some problem because of the dead person.
ਮਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੇ ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਆ ਵਾਪਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਬੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥
jis beetee jaanai parabh so-ay.
Only God Himself knows what that dead person’s soul is going to face,
ਪਰ ਜਿਸ ਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਜੋ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
aapay kartaa karay so ho-ay. ||2||
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||2||
ਜੋ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਕੁੱਛ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ॥੨॥
ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਣਾ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
jeevat marnaa taaray tarnaa.
Those who eradicate self-conceit while still alive know that the world-ocean of vices can be crossed only by God’s help.
ਜੇ ਹਰੀ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵਤ ਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਮਰ ਕੇ (ਅਪਣੱਤ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ) ਤਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
jai jagdees param gat sarnaa.
Salute the Master-God by seeking whose refuge the supreme spiritual status is attained.
ਉਸ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਜੈ ਹੋਵੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਓਟ ਲੈਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣਾ ॥
ha-o balihaaree satgur charnaa.
But God’s refuge is attained through the true Guru’s teaching, therefore, I dedicate myself to him.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੩॥
gur bohith sabad bhai tarnaa. ||3||
The Guru’s teachings is like a boat and the world-ocean of vices can be crossed over only by reflecting and following the Guru’s teachings. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਨੋ, ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਭਵ-ਸਾਗਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ॥
nirbha-o aap nirantar jot.
God Himself is free of any fear and His divine light permeates in all.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਗਿ ਛੋਤਿ ॥
bin naavai sootak jag chhot.
But without meditating on Naam, the world is lost in superstitions, such as impurity and untouchability at someone’s death.
ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਸੂਤਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਭਿੱਟ ਦਾ ਭਰਮ ਹੈ।
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਤਿ ॥
durmat binsai ki-aa kahi rot.
People are getting spiritually ruined because of their evil intellect, what can one say and cry about them?
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਗਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ) ਕੀਹ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਰੋਵੇ?
ਜਨਮਿ ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥੪॥
janam moo-ay bin bhagat sarot. ||4||
Without devotional worship and without listening to God’s praises, they continue to pass through the cycles of birth and death. ||4||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ, ਜੀਵ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤ ॥
moo-ay ka-o sach roveh meet. tarai gun roveh neetaa neet.
The three modes of Maya (vice, virtue, and power) are the ones who cry when a person has so overcome his ego as if he has already died while still alive.
ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਮਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਸਚ ਮੁਚ ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਪਹਿਲੇ) ਮਿੱਤਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣ ਨਿੱਤ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਚੀਤ ॥
dukh sukh parhar sahj sucheet.
Discarding any feelings of pain or pleasure, such a person is intuitively awakened,
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ (ਦਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ) ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੫॥
tan man sa-opa-o krisan pareet. ||5||
and has dedicated his body and mind to the love of God. ||5||
ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਤੋਂ ਭੇਟਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਭੀਤਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖ ॥
bheetar ayk anayk asaNkh.
The same One (God) dwells within the various countless living beings.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥
karam Dharam baho sankh asaNkh.
But people follow myriad of faiths and perform innumerable rituals.
(ਪਰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਰਚ ਲਏ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਭੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਰੰਥ ॥
bin bhai bhagtee janam biranth.
Without devotional worship and revered fear of God, one’s life is a total waste.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ, ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਰਮਾਰੰਥ ॥੬॥
har gun gaavahi mil parmaaranth. ||6||
Those who sing God’s praises attain the supreme purpose of human life. ||6||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥
ਆਪਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਿ ॥
aap marai maaray bhee aap.
When a person dies then in a way God dwelling in him dies and it is also He Himself who kills that person.
ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ, ਮਾਨੋ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
aap upaa-ay thaap uthaap.
God Himself creates the universe and after creating He Himself destroys it.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਤੂ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
sarisat upaa-ee jotee too jaat.
O’ God, You created the universe and from Your divine light You created countless species.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ,ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੋਤ ਤੋਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਾਤੀਆਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ।
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ॥੭॥
sabad veechaar milan nahee bharaat. ||7||
By reflecting on the Guru’s word, one attains union with God and he no longer wanders in any doubt. ||7||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ॥੭॥
ਸੂਤਕੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
sootak agan bhakhai jag khaa-ay.
Impurity is there in the burning fire, which devours the world.
ਸੂਤਕ ਹੈ ਮਚਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ, ਜੋ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਸਮ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਥਾਇ ॥
sootak jal thal sabh hee thaa-ay.
There is impurity is in the water, upon the land, and everywhere.
ਸੂਤਕ ਹੈ ਪਾਣੀ, ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੂਤਕਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
naanak sootak janam mareejai.
O’ Nanak, by entertaining superstitions like impurity, people continue to go through the cycles of birth and death.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੂਤਕ (ਦੇ ਭਰਮ) ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹੋਂਦ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
gur parsaadee har ras peejai. ||8||4||
By the Guru’s Grace, we should drink the nectar of God’s Name. ||8||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ-ਰਸ ਪੀਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੪॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਪਰਖੇ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
aap veechaarai so parkhay heeraa.
One who reflects on the self, recognizes the worth of jewel like Naam.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ) ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
ayk darisat taaray gur pooraa.
With a single glance of mercy, the perfect Guru helps him swim across the world-ocean of vices.
ਆਪਣੀ ਇਕ (ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ) ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੧॥
gur maanai man tay man Dheeraa. ||1||
Such a person develops complete faith in the Guru’s teachings and his mind does not waver in the love of Maya. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਦਿਲੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਤੇ ਸਰਧਾ ਲਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਡੋਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
aisaa saahu saraafee karai.
The Guru is like a banker, who tests us before bestowing the wealth of Naam.
ਗੁਰੂ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ (ਸਰਾਫ਼) ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਸਰਾਫ਼ੀ (ਪਰਖ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saachee nadar ayk liv tarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and casts his true glance of grace, that person’s mind gets attuned to God and he swims across the worldly ocean of vices. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੱਚੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
poonjee naam niranjan saar.
One who considers the immaculate God’s Name as the sublime capital and
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ) ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
nirmal saach rataa paikaar.
is imbued with the love of eternal God, becomes an immaculate wise man.
ਜੋ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ (ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਿਆਰੀਏ ਵਾਂਗ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
sifat sahj ghar gur kartaar. ||2||
He intuitively enshrines the Guru-God in his heart by singing God’s praise. ||2||
ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
aasaa mansaa sabad jalaa-ay.
He burns away all his hopes and worldly desires through the Guru’s word.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਕ ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਕ ਫੁਰਨਾ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
raam naraa-in kahai kahaa-ay.
He himself utters God’s praises and motivates others to do the same.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਜਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
gur tay vaat mahal ghar paa-ay. ||3||
By following the Guru’s teachings, he finds the righteous way of life and realizes God’s abode in his heart. ||3||
ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ) ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਹਲ ਘਰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
