ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
jo tis bhaavai so fun ho-ay.
Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sun bharthar naanak kahai beechaar.
O’ Bharthari Yogi, listen, after due deliberation Nanak says this,
ਹੇ ਭਰਥਰੀ ਜੋਗੀ! ਸੁਣ, ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧॥
nirmal naam mayraa aaDhaar. ||8||1||
that the Immaculate Name of God is my only Support in life. ||8||1||
ਉਸ (ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਸਭਿ ਜਪ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
sabh jap sabh tap sabh chaturaa-ee.
Even if one is performing all kinds of worship and penance, and shows all kinds of cleverness,
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੇ ਤਪ ਸਾਧਦਾ ਹੈ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਆਦਿਕ ਸਮਝਣ ਬਾਰੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ-ਅਕਲ ਭੀ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
oojharh bharmai raahi na paa-ee.
yet, he is not on the right path in life and instead is wandering in the wilderness.
ਉਹ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੇ ਭਟਕ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
bin boojhay ko thaa-ay na paa-ee.
Without understanding the righteous way of living, all his efforts are worthless and he is not approved in God’s court.
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਨ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਜਪ ਤਪ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ) ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉੱਦਮ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣੈ ਮਾਥੇ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
naam bihoonai maathay chhaa-ee. ||1||
Without the wealth of Naam, he is disgraced in God’s court. ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਸੁਆਹ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸਾਚ ਧਣੀ ਜਗੁ ਆਇ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
saach Dhanee jag aa-ay binaasaa.
The world continues to be created and destroyed but the Creator is eternal.
ਜਗਤ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
chhootas paraanee gurmukh daasaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By following the Guru’s teachings, a devotee of God is saved from the cycles of birth and death. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਸਾ ॥
jag mohi baaDhaa bahutee aasaa.
The world is bound in emotional attachments and many worldly desires.
ਜਗਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਇਕਿ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
gurmatee ik bha-ay udaasaa.
But some remain detached from Maya by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਪਰ ਕਈ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥
antar naam kamal pargaasaa.
They realize God dwelling within and they remains delighted like a lotus.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-) ਕਮਲ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
tinH ka-o naahee jam kee taraasaa. ||2||
They have no fear of death. ||2|
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਜਗੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥
jag tari-a jit kaaman hitkaaree.
The entire humanity is controlled by lust.
ਜਗਤ ਕਾਮਾਤੁਰ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਲਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
putar kaltar lag naam visaaree.
Emotionally attached to family, one forsakes Naam.
ਪੁੱਤਰ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa baajee haaree.
Thus wastes human life in vain and loses the game of life.
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
satgur sayvay karnee saaree. ||3||
However, one who follows the Guru’s teachings and remembers God, his conduct becomes sublime. ||3||
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
baahrahu ha-umai kahai kahaa-ay.
Even if a Guru’s follower utters some egotistical remarks in public.
ਉਂਞ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਉਹ ਵੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਾ ਜਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
andrahu mukat layp kaday na laa-ay.
But he remains from the effects of Maya and never afflicted by ego.
ਪਰ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
maa-i-aa moh gur sabad jalaa-ay.
By following the Guru’s word, such a person burns away his love for Maya,
ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੪॥
nirmal naam sad hirdai Dhi-aa-ay. ||4||
and always meditates on the Immaculate Naam in his heart ||4||
ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
Dhaavat raakhai thaak rahaa-ay.
He restrains his wandering mind and keeps it under control.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
sikh sangat karam milaa-ay.
The company of such a Guru’s disciple is obtained by God’s grace.
ਐਸੇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
gur bin bhoolo aavai jaa-ay.
Without the Guru’s teachings, one goes astray and continues in the cycle of birth and death.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੫॥
nadar karay sanjog milaa-ay. ||5||
When God bestows His glance of grace, He brings about a person’s union with the Guru. ||5|
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ॥੫॥
ਰੂੜੋ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
roorho kaha-o na kahi-aa jaa-ee.
O’ God, You are beautiful, but I cannot describe how beautiful, You are.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਦੱਸਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਉ ਨਹ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
akath katha-o nah keemat paa-ee.
O’ God, Your virtues are indescribable; even if I try, I cannot estimate the worth of Your virtues.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ, ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੂਖ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
sabh dukh tayray sookh rajaa-ee.
Sorrows turn into pleasures by Your Will.
ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਈ ॥੬॥
sabh dukh maytay saachai naa-ee. ||6||
All sorrows are eradicated by meditating on God’s Name. ||6||
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੬॥
ਕਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਵਾਜਾ ਪਗ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਾਲਾ ॥
kar bin vaajaa pag bin taalaa.
One feels such a joy as if a musical instrument is playing within his heart without the use of hands and a dance is being performed without the use of feet,
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਅਜੇਹੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਬਿਨਾ ਹੱਥੀਂ ਵਜਾਏ ਵਾਜਾ ਵੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਨੱਚਿਆਂ ਤਾਲ ਪੂਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥
jay sabad bujhai taa sach nihaalaa.
if he realizes God dwelling within him by understanding the Guru’s Word.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਵੇ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਭੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲਾ ॥
antar saach sabhay sukh naalaa.
With the realization of God within, that person feels blissful,
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਸੁਖ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੭॥
nadar karay raakhai rakhvaalaa. ||7||
When the Savior God shows His glance of grace, He saves the person from worldly afflictions. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਖਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
taribhavan soojhai aap gavaavai.
One who sheds self-conceit is able to realize God everywhere.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਦਿੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਾਣੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
banee boojhai sach samaavai.
He understands the Guru’s word and merges in the eternal God.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥
sabad veechaaray ayk liv taaraa.
Reflecting on the Guru’s word that person keeps attuned to God alone.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੋਚ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak Dhan savaaranhaaraa. ||8||2||
O’ Nanak, great is God, the embellisher of human beings. ||8||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੁਬਾਰਕ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਸ਼ੋਭਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੮॥੨॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
laykh asaNkh likh likh maan.
There are innumerable writings about God; by continually writing, the authors become egotistical about their knowledge.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬਾਰੇ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਲਿਖਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਖਾਨੁ ॥
man maanee-ai sach surat vakhaan.
When one’s heart accepts God, only then he can understands and speaks of Him.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਵੇ, ਕੇਵਲ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਅਤੇ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ
ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
kathnee badnee parh parh bhaar.
Just uttering or reading again and again about His virtues (without accepting) only multiplies the load of ego on our minds.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਣ ਨਾਲ ਬੋਲਣ ਨਾਲ ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਭੀ (ਮਨ ਉਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ) ਭਾਰ (ਹੀ ਵਧਦਾ) ਹੈ।
ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
laykh asaNkh alaykh apaar. ||1||
There are innumerable writings about God’s virtues but He is infinite and beyond description. ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬਾਰੇ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰੱਤੂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਕੱਥ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਤੂੰ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
aisaa saachaa tooN ayko jaan.
O’ my friend, recognize only one such eternal God,
ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਾਣ ,
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaman marnaa hukam pachhaan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and understand that birth and death is under His will. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੀ ਸਮਝ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi jag baaDhaa jamkaal.
Because of love for Maya, the world is in the grip of the fear of death.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਗਤ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਬਾਂਧਾ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥
baaNDhaa chhootai naam samHaal.
The world can be released from this grip by meditating on God’s Name.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਬੱਝਾ ਛੁਟ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
gur sukh-daata avar na bhaal.
The Guru is the giver of peace through Naam; do not look for anyone else.
ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇ ਕੇ) ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਨਾਂ ਕਰ।
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
halat palat nibhee tuDh naal. ||2||
This Naam would stand by you both in this and the next world. ||2||
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
sabad marai taaN ayk liv laa-ay.
When a person completely eradicates his self-conceit through the Guru’s word, only then he can attune his mind to God.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰ ਜਾਏ
ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
achar charai taaN bharam chukaa-ay.
When one conquers one’s unconquerable evil desires, only then he can get rid of all worldly illusion.
ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦੇ) ਨਾਹ ਮੁਕਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਟੋਲੇ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ) ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
jeevan mukat man naam vasaa-ay.
He who enshrines Naam in his heart attains liberation from vices while still alive.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਇਸੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥
gurmukh ho-ay ta sach samaa-ay. ||3||
He merges in the eternal God by following the Guru’s teachings. ||3||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਕੇ ॥੩॥
ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਸਾਜੀ ਗਗਨੁ ਅਕਾਸੁ ॥
jin Dhar saajee gagan akaas.
God, who created the earth and the sky,
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਆਦਿਕ ਰਚੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭ ਥਾਪੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
jin sabh thaapee thaap uthaap.
He who created the universe and who is able to create and destroy it.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ।
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
sarab nirantar aapay aap.
He Himself is thoroughly pervading within all.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ,
ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਪੂਛੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥
kisai na poochhay bakhsay aap. ||4||
He does not consult anyone and He Himself blesses all. ||4||
ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਤੇ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਤੂ ਪੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰੁ ॥
too pur saagar maanak heer.
O’ God, You Yourself are the world-ocean full of precious virtues.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਇਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਣਕ-ਹੀਰਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਤੂ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥
too nirmal sach gunee gaheer.
You are immaculate, eternal and the treasure of virtues.
ਤੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈਂ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈਂ।
