ਮੁਖਿ ਅਪਿਆਉ ਬੈਠ ਕਉ ਦੈਨ ॥
mukh api-aa-o baith ka-o dain.
to feed you as you rest,
ਜੋ ਬੈਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਗੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰ)।
ਇਹੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੁ ਗੁਨੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
ih nirgun gun kachhoo na boojhai.
O’ God, this virtueless person does not appreciate the value of any of Your favours done to him,
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਇਹ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਣ ਜੀਵ (ਤੇਰਾ) ਕੋਈ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ,
ਬਖਸਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੧॥
bakhas layho ta-o naanak seejhai. ||1||
O’ Nanak, If You bless him with forgiveness, only then he can succeed in achieving the Goal of human life. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ) (ਜੇ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇਂ, ਤਾਂ (ਇਹ ਜਨਮ-ਮਨੋਰਥ ਵਿਚ) ਸਫਲ ਹੋਵੇ l
ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਧਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਬਸਹਿ ॥
jih parsaad Dhar oopar sukh baseh.
By whose Grace, you dwell in comfort upon the earth.
(ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) ਜਿਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ l
ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਮੀਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਸਹਿ ॥
sut bharaat meet banitaa sang haseh.
With your children, siblings, friends and spouse, you laugh and enjoy yourself.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਭਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ;
ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਪੀਵਹਿ ਸੀਤਲ ਜਲਾ ॥
jih parsaad peeveh seetal jalaa.
By Whose Grace, you enjoy this soothing cool water,
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਠੰਢਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ਪਵਨੁ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਅਮੁਲਾ ॥
sukh-daa-ee pavan paavak amulaa.
along with priceless soothing air and fire.
ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹਵਾ ਤੇ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਅੱਗ (ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈਂ)
ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਭੋਗਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਰਸਾ ॥
jih parsaad bhogeh sabh rasaa.
By Whose Grace, you enjoy all sorts of pleasures,
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰੇ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਬਸਾ ॥
sagal samagree sang saath basaa.
and are provided with all the necessities of life.
ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਲੋੜੀਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੈਆਂ ਸਮੇਤ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੀਨੇ ਹਸਤ ਪਾਵ ਕਰਨ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਰਸਨਾ ॥
deenay hasat paav karan naytar rasnaa.
Who gave you hands, feet, ears, eyes and tongue,
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੱਥ ਪੈਰ ਕੰਨ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਜੀਭ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ,
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਅਵਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਚਨਾ ॥
tiseh ti-aag avar sang rachnaa.
yet, you forsake Him and attach yourself to others.
ਉਸ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ (ਹੇ ਜੀਵ!) ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਗਨ ਹੈਂ।
ਐਸੇ ਦੋਖ ਮੂੜ ਅੰਧ ਬਿਆਪੇ ॥
aisay dokh moorh anDh bi-aapay.
Spiritually blind fools are in the grip of such sinful mistakes;
ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪੇ ॥੨॥
naanak kaadh layho parabh aapay. ||2||
O’ God, save them from these sinful mistakes, prays Nanak.||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ, ਤੇ ਆਖ) ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਲੈ l
ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਜੋ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
aad ant jo raakhanhaar.
The one who is our Protector from birth till death,
ਜੋ ਜਨਮ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਮਰਨ ਸਮੇਂ ਤਕ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਕਰੈ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥
tis si-o pareet na karai gavaar.
yet, the ignorant person does not love Him.
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jaa kee sayvaa nav niDh paavai.
Serving Whom by meditating on Naam is like the nine treasures of the world.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਨੌ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
taa si-o moorhaa man nahee laavai.
yet, the foolish person does not attune his minds to Him.
ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋੜਦਾ।
ਜੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰੇ ॥
jo thaakur sad sadaa hajooray.
That God who is always present within and around us,
ਜੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਦੀਵ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਹੈ,
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਅੰਧਾ ਜਾਨਤ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
taa ka-o anDhaa jaanat dooray.
the spiritually blind believes that He is far away.
ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੂੰ (ਕਿਤੇ) ਦੂਰ (ਬੈਠਾ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਟਹਲ ਪਾਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
jaa kee tahal paavai dargeh maan.
In Whose service by meditation, one receives honor in God’s court,
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਟਹਲ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਸਾਰੈ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਅਜਾਨੁ ॥
tiseh bisaarai mugaDh ajaan.
yet, the spiritually ignorant fool forgets Him.
ਮੂਰਖ ਤੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਇਹੁ ਭੂਲਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
sadaa sadaa ih bhoolanhaar.
Forever and ever, this person makes mistakes;
ਇਹ ਜੀਵ (ਤਾਂ) ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਭੁੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
naanak raakhanhaar apaar. ||3||
O’ Nanak, the infinite God is our Savior. ||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ l
ਰਤਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਉਡੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਚੈ ॥
ratan ti-aag ka-udee sang rachai.
Forsaking the priceless Naam, one is engrossed with worldly wealth.
ਜੀਵ ਨਾਮ- ਰਤਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਰੂਪ) ਕਉਡੀ ਨਾਲ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਝੂਠ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਚੈ ॥
saach chhod jhooth sang machai.
He renounces Truth and embraces the falsehood.
ਸੱਚੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ (ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਭੂਹੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਛਡਨਾ ਸੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
jo chhadnaa so asthir kar maanai.
That thing which must ultimately be abandoned he believes it to be everlasting,
ਜੋ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਜੋ ਹੋਵਨੁ ਸੋ ਦੂਰਿ ਪਰਾਨੈ ॥
jo hovan so door paraanai.
That (death) which is imminent, he believes to be far off.
ਜੋ (ਮੌਤ) ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਵਾਪਰਨੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਕਿਤੇ) ਦੂਰ (ਬੈਠੀ) ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਇ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
chhod jaa-ay tis kaa saram karai.
He struggles for worldly wealth, which he must eventually leave behind.
ਉਸ ਧਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਖੇਚਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅੰਤ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਣੀ ਹੈ;
ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥
sang sahaa-ee tis parharai.
He turns away from God, who is always with him.
ਉਹ ਉਸ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਚੰਦਨ ਲੇਪੁ ਉਤਾਰੈ ਧੋਇ ॥ ਗਰਧਬ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭਸਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
chandan layp utaarai Dho-ay. garDhab pareet bhasam sang ho-ay.
He is being like a donkey,who even if anointed with sandal, would wash it off because it’s love is with ashes only.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਖੋਤਾ) ਚੰਦਨ ਦਾ ਲੇਪ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਲਾਹ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,ਖੋਤੇ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਸਦਾ) ਸੁਆਹ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
anDh koop meh patit bikraal.
He has fallen into the deep, dark pit of vices.
ਜੀਵ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ਖੂਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਿੱਗਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥
naanak kaadh layho parabh da-i-aal. ||4||
O’ Nanak, pray and say, O’ Merciful God, save him from drowning in the ocean of vices. ||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ, ਹੇ ਦਿਆਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਇਸ ਖੂਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੱਢ ਲੈ
ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਪਸੂ ਕੀ ਮਾਨਸ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
kartoot pasoo kee maanas jaat.
He belongs to the human species, but he acts like animals.
ਜਾਤਿ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨੁੱਖ-ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹੈ) ਪਰ ਕੰਮ ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ,
ਲੋਕ ਪਚਾਰਾ ਕਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
lok pachaaraa karai din raat.
Day and Night, he is busy showing off (his wealth and wisdom) to others.
(ਉਂਞ) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਲੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
baahar bhaykh antar mal maa-i-aa.
Outwardly, he wears religious robes, but within is the filth of Maya.
ਬਾਹਰ (ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਹੈ,
ਛਪਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਕਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥
chhapas naahi kachh karai chhapaa-i-aa.
He cannot conceal this, no matter how hard he tries.
ਜਿੰਨਾ ਜੀ ਕਰੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਲੁਕਾਵੇ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਕਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥
baahar gi-aan Dhi-aan isnaan.
Outwardly, he displays knowledge, meditation and purification,
ਬਾਹਰ (ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) (ਤੀਰਥ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਭੀ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਸੁਆਨੁ ॥
antar bi-aapai lobh su-aan.
but within clings the dog-like greed.
ਪਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਭ (-ਰੂਪ) ਕੁੱਤਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਤਨੁ ਸੁਆਹ ॥
antar agan baahar tan su-aah.
The fire of desire rages within; but outwardly he applies ashes to the body. (to appear as a Yogi who has renounced all worldly desires)
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਹੈ, ਬਾਹਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੁਆਹ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਬੇੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ l
ਗਲਿ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੈਸੇ ਤਰੈ ਅਥਾਹ ॥
gal paathar kaisay tarai athaah.
With load of worldly desires and sins like stones around the neck, how can one swim across the Unfathomable ocean of vices?
(ਜੇ) ਗਲ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਪੱਥਰ (ਹੋਣ ਤਾਂ) ਅਥਾਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਤਰੇ?
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ॥
jaa kai antar basai parabh aap.
The one within whose heart God Himself dwells,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਤਿ ॥੫॥
naanak tay jan sahj samaat. ||5||
O’ Nanak, that person intuitively gets imbued in the love of God. ||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸੁਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
sun anDhaa kaisay maarag paavai.
Just by listening, how can the blind find the path?
ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰਾ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਹ ਲੱਭ ਲਏ?
ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਓੜਿ ਨਿਬਹਾਵੈ ॥
kar geh layho orh nibhaavai.
If someone holds his hand, then he can reach his destination.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹੱਥ ਫੜ ਲਓ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਟਿਕਾਣੇ ਤੇ ਪੁੱਜ ਜਾਏਗਾ।
ਕਹਾ ਬੁਝਾਰਤਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਡੋਰਾ ॥
kahaa bujhaarat boojhai doraa.
How can a riddle be understood by the deaf?
ਬੋਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਨਿਰੀ) ਸੈਨਤ ਨੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਸਮਝੇ?
ਨਿਸਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਮਝੈ ਭੋਰਾ ॥
nis kahee-ai ta-o samjhai bhoraa.
Say ‘night’, and he thinks you said ‘day’.
(ਸੈਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਜੇ) ਆਖੀਏ (ਇਹ) ਰਾਤ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ) ਦਿਨ (ਹੈ)।
ਕਹਾ ਬਿਸਨਪਦ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁੰਗ ॥
kahaa bisanpad gaavai gung.
How can the mute sing the devotional Songs?
ਗੂੰਗਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਬਿਸ਼ਨ-ਪਦੇ ਗਾ ਸਕੇ?
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਤਉ ਭੀ ਸੁਰ ਭੰਗ ॥
jatan karai ta-o bhee sur bhang.
He may try, but his voice will fail him.
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰ ਟੁੱਟੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਹ ਪਿੰਗੁਲ ਪਰਬਤ ਪਰ ਭਵਨ ॥
kah pingul parbat par bhavan.
How can the cripple climb up the mountain?
ਲੂਲ੍ਹਾ ਕਿਥੇ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਤੇ ਭਉਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਨਹੀ ਹੋਤ ਊਹਾ ਉਸੁ ਗਵਨ ॥
nahee hot oohaa us gavan.
He simply cannot go there.
ਓਥੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮੈ ਦੀਨੁ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
kartaar karunaa mai deen bayntee karai.
O’ creator, O’ merciful God, Your humble servant prays.
ਹੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ! ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਗਰ! (ਇਹ) ਨਿਮਾਣਾ ਦਾਸ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤਰੈ ॥੬॥
naanak tumree kirpaa tarai. ||6||
O’ Nanak, only Your kindness can save a mortal from world-ocean of vices. (6)
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ) ਤਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਸੁ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
sang sahaa-ee so aavai na cheet.
God, who is always with him as support, the mortal does not remember Him,
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਇਸ ਮੂਰਖ ਦਾ) ਸੰਗੀ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਇਹ) ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ,
ਜੋ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
jo bairaa-ee taa si-o pareet.
instead, shows love to his enemy, Maya.
(ਪਰ) ਜੋ ਵੈਰੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਲੂਆ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ॥
baloo-aa kay garih bheetar basai.
The mortal lives in the body which is like a castle of sand, crumbling down.
ਉਹ ਰੇਤ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੰਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਭਾਵ ਰੇਤ ਦੇ ਕਿਣਕਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਉਮਰ ਛਿਨ ਛਿਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕਿਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ),
ਅਨਦ ਕੇਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਸੈ ॥
anad kayl maa-i-aa rang rasai.
enjoys the games of worldly pleasures and the tastes of Maya.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਮਸਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਨੰਦ ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤਿ ॥
darirh kar maanai maneh parteet.
He strongly believes that his stay in this world and the worldly pleasures are all permanent.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਰ ਤੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੰਗਰਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਸਤਕਿਲ ਸਮਝੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹੀ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮੂੜੇ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
kaal na aavai moorhay cheet.
The thought of death does not even come to the mind for the fool.
ਮੂਰਖ ਦੇ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ (ਕਦੇ) ਮੌਤ (ਦਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ
ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮੋਹ ॥
bair biroDh kaam kroDh moh.
Hate, conflict, lust, anger, emotional attachment,
ਵੈਰ ਵਿਰੋਧ, ਕਾਮ, ਗੁੱਸਾ, ਮੋਹ,
ਝੂਠ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਾ ਲੋਭ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ॥
jhooth bikaar mahaa lobh Dharoh.
falsehood, sins, immense greed and deceit:
ਝੂਠ, ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮ, ਭਾਰੀ ਲਾਲਚ ਤੇ ਦਗ਼ਾ- ਠੱਗੀ
