ਇਆਹੂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਿਹਾਨੇ ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ॥
i-aahoo jugat bihaanay ka-ee janam.
So many lifetimes are wasted in these ways.
ਇਸੇ ਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਦੇ) ਕਈ ਜਨਮ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਆਪਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਮ ॥੭॥
naanak raakh layho aapan kar karam. ||7||
O’ God,please, show mercy and protect him from these vices, prays Nanak.||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਸ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਆਖ) ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਬਚਾ ਲਵੋ
ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਤੁਮ ਪਹਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
too thaakur tum peh ardaas.
O’ God, You are the Master; to You, we offer this prayer.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਮਾਲਿਕ ਹੈਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਰਜ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੀ ਹੈ,
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
jee-o pind sabh tayree raas.
This body and soul are all Your blessings.
ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ (ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ) ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ ਹੈ।
ਤੁਮ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
tum maat pitaa ham baarik tayray.
You are our mother and father; we are Your children.
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਡਾ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਹਾਂ,
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
tumree kirpaa meh sookh ghanayray.
In Your Grace, there are so many joys and peace!
ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ (ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ) ਵਿਚ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਖ ਹਨ।
ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ॥
ko-ay na jaanai tumraa ant.
No one knows Your limits.
ਕੋਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਊਚੇ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥
oochay tay oochaa bhagvant.
O Highest of the High, Most Generous God,
ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਹੈਂ,
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਸੂਤ੍ਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
sagal samagree tumrai sutir Dhaaree.
the entire universe is supported and run by Your command.
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ, ਸਾਰੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ l
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ॥
tum tay ho-ay so aagi-aakaaree.
That which has come from You is under Your Command.
ਤੇਰੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
tumree gat mit tum hee jaanee.
You alone know Your state and extent.
ਕਿਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਕੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈਂ-ਇਹ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak daas sadaa kurbaanee. ||8||4||
O’ God,I dedicate my life to You forever, says Nanak. ||8||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ (ਤੈਥੋਂ) ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ

ਦੇਨਹਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਆਨ ਸੁਆਇ ॥
daynhaar parabh chhod kai laageh aan su-aa-ay.
One who renounces the benevolent God, and attaches himself to the worldly pleasures,
ਜੋ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਰਸਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੂ ਨ ਸੀਝਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak kahoo na seejh-ee bin naavai pat jaa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, such a person shall never succeed in the journey of life. Without Naam, he shall lose his honor. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ-ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਵਿਚ ਕਦੇ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ l

Ashtapadee:
ਦਸ ਬਸਤੂ ਲੇ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
das bastoo lay paachhai paavai.
The mortal receives many amenities from God, and puts them behind him;
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਦਸ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਰੱਖ ਲੈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਾਂਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਬਿਖੋਟਿ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
ayk basat kaaran bikhot gavaavai.
for the sake of one thing withheld by God, he forfeits his faith.
ਇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਏਕ ਭੀ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਦਸ ਭੀ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
ayk bhee na day-ay das bhee hir lay-ay.
But what if God takes all those gifts back and does not give the one he was complaining about,
(ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਭੀ ਨਾਹ ਦੇਵੇ, ਤੇ, ਦਸ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਭੀ ਖੋਹ ਲਏ,
ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
ta-o moorhaa kaho kahaa karay-i.
Then, what could the fool say or do?
ਤਾਂ, ਦੱਸੋ, ਇਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਕੀਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਜਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
jis thaakur si-o naahee chaaraa.
The Master with whom, force is of no avail,
ਜਿਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਜੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਲਦਾ,
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਦ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾ ॥
taa ka-o keejai sad namaskaaraa.
Unto Him, bow forever in adoration and accept His Will.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਉਣਾ ਹੀ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
jaa kai man laagaa parabh meethaa.
The person to whose heart, God is dear,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਤਾਹੂ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠਾ ॥
sarab sookh taahoo man voothaa.
all peace and pleasures come to dwell in his mind.
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਉਸੇ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਅਪਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਆ ॥
jis jan apnaa hukam manaa-i-aa.
The person, whom God empowers to accept His Will,
ਜਿਸਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਨਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
sarab thok naanak tin paa-i-aa. ||1||
O’ Nanak, feels like he has received all the amenities of the world. ll1ll
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਾਨੋ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਲੱਭ ਲਏ ਹਨ l
ਅਗਨਤ ਸਾਹੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
agnat saahu apnee day raas.
God, the Banker, gives endless capital of gifts to the mortal,
ਸ਼ਾਹ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਜੀਵ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਤੈ ਅਨਦ ਉਲਾਸਿ ॥
khaat peet bartai anad ulaas.
who uses this capital with pleasure and joy.
(ਜੀਵ) ਖਾਂਦਾ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਚਾਉ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਪੁਨੀ ਅਮਾਨ ਕਛੁ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਸਾਹੁ ਲੇਇ ॥
apunee amaan kachh bahur saahu lay-ay.
If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker (God),
ਜੇਕਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ , ਮਗਰੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਮਾਨਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਕੁ ਵਾਪਸ ਲੈ ਲਵੇ,
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
agi-aanee man ros karay-i.
the ignorant person feels aggrieved and complains.
ਤਾਂ (ਇਹ) ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਅਪਨੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
apnee parteet aap hee khovai.
By doing so, he himself destroys his own credibility,
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਆਪਣਾ ਇਤਬਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
bahur us kaa bisvaas na hovai.
resulting in not to be trusted again.
ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਸਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
jis kee basat tis aagai raakhai.
Someone who offers to God what belongs to Him anyway,
(ਜੇ) ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ (ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਈ) ਚੀਜ਼ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ) ਰੱਖ ਦਏ,
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਾਥੈ ॥
parabh kee aagi-aa maanai maathai.
and willingly abides by God’s Will,
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਚਉਗੁਨ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥
us tay cha-ugun karai nihaal.
gets blessed many times more by Him.
ਤਾਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਅੱਗੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚਉਗੁਣਾ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥੨॥
naanak saahib sadaa da-i-aal. ||2||
O’ Nanak, our Master (God) is merciful forever. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਾਲਕ ਸਦਾ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥ ਸਰਪਰ ਹੋਵਤ ਜਾਨੁ ਅਨੇਤ ॥
anik bhaat maa-i-aa kay hayt. sarpar hovat jaan anayt.
Understand that, the many forms of worldly attachments are transitory and surely these shall pass away.
ਸਮਝ ਲੈ ਕਿ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਲਗਨਾਂ, ਆਰਜੀ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਨਿਸਚਿਤ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ।
ਬਿਰਖ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
birakh kee chhaa-i-aa si-o rang laavai.
A person falls in love with the shade of the tree,
(ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਛਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਬੈਠੇ,
ਓਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਉਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥
oh binsai uho man pachhutaavai.
and when it disappears, he feel regret in his mind.
ਉਹ ਛਾਂ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਾਲਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
jo deesai so chaalanhaar.
Whatever is seen, is transitory ( ;
(ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ) ਜੋ ਦਿੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ,
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤਹ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥
lapat rahi-o tah anDh anDhaar.
yet, the blindest of the blind clings to it.
ਇਸ (ਜਗਤ) ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਜੀਵ) ਜੱਫਾ ਪਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਟਾਊ ਸਿਉ ਜੋ ਲਾਵੈ ਨੇਹ ॥
bataa-oo si-o jo laavai nayh.
Anyone who falls in love with a passerby,
ਜੋ (ਭੀ) ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਕਿਸੇ) ਰਾਹੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕੇਹ ॥
taa ka-o haath na aavai kayh.
obtains nothing from the relationship.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਪੱਲੇ ਕੁਛ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ।
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
man har kay naam kee pareet sukh-daa-ee.
O’ mind, only love with God’s Name bestows peace.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਹੀ) ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ;
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਲਾਈ ॥੩॥
kar kirpaa naanak aap la-ay laa-ee. ||3||
O’ Nanak, His love is received by only those whom He Himself blesses with it. (3)
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਸੀਬ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
mithi-aa tan Dhan kutamb sabaa-i-aa.
False (perishable) are body, wealth, and all relations.
ਸਰੀਰ, ਧਨ ਤੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
mithi-aa ha-umai mamtaa maa-i-aa.
False are ego, possessiveness and Maya.
ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ਹੰਕਾਰ, ਅਪਣੱਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ।
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਾਜ ਜੋਬਨ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ॥
mithi-aa raaj joban Dhan maal.
False (temporary) are power, youth, wealth and property.
ਰਾਜ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਤੇ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ਸਭ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ,
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
mithi-aa kaam kroDh bikraal.
False are lust and wild anger.
ਕਾਮ (ਦੀ ਲਹਰ) ਤੇ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਇਹ ਭੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ।
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਥ ਹਸਤੀ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥
mithi-aa rath hastee asav bastaraa.
False (transitory) are chariots, elephants, horses and expensive clothes.
ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ, ਹਾਥੀ, ਘੋੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਸ਼ਾਕਾਂ।
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਸਤਾ ॥
mithi-aa rang sang maa-i-aa paykh hastaa.
False is the love of gathering wealth, and reveling in the sight of it.
ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵ) ਹੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਹ ਹਾਸਾ ਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਭੀ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਮੋਹ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
mithi-aa Dharoh moh abhimaan.
False are deception, emotional attachment and egotistical pride.
ਦਗ਼ਾ, ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ-(ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਦੇ) ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਤਰੰਗ) ਹਨ;
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਆਪਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰਤ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
mithi-aa aapas oopar karat gumaan.
False is the self-pride with ego.
ਆਪਣੇ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਨਾ ਭੀ ਝੂਠ ਹੈ।
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸਰਨ ॥
asthir bhagat saaDh kee saran.
Only the devotional worship of God is imperishable, performed under the protection of the Guru.
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਭਗਤੀ (ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਣ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ॥੪॥
naanak jap jap jeevai har kay charan. ||4||
O’ Nanak, one can live a true life only by meditating on Naam.||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣ (ਹੀ) ਸਦਾ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਸਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸੁਨਹਿ ॥
mithi-aa sarvan par nindaa suneh.
Useless are the ears which listen to the slander of others.
ਕੰਨ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ (ਜੇ ਉਹ) ਪਰਾਈ ਬਖ਼ੀਲੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਸਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਕਉ ਹਿਰਹਿ ॥
mithi-aa hasat par darab ka-o hireh.
Useless are the hands which steal the wealth of others.
ਹੱਥ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ (ਜੇ ਇਹ) ਪਰਾਏ ਧਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਰਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ;
