ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ ॥

all kinds of clever efforts are futile to satisfy the worldly desires.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੇ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ।
ਭੇਖ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
bhaykh anayk agan nahee bujhai.
Wearing various religious robes, does not extinguish the fire of worldly desires.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਭੇਖ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੁੱਝਦੀ,
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਹੀ ਸਿਝੈ ॥
kot upaavdargeh nahee sijhai.
Making millions of such efforts does not help getting accepted in the God’s court.
ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਪਰਾਲਿਆਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ।
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
chhootas naahee oobh pa-i-aal.
With all such efforts, one is not released from the worldly attachmentseven if one escapes to the skies or hides in the nether regions.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਜਤਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵ ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਚਾਹੇ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਜਾਏ, ਚਾਹੇ ਪਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਲੁਕ ਜਾਏ,
ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
mohi bi-aapahi maa-i-aa jaal.
Instead one keeps getting entangled in the web of emotional attachments and desires.
ਸਗੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅਵਰ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਜਮੁ ਡਾਨੈ ॥
avar kartoot saglee jam daanai.
All other efforts are punished by the Messenger of Death,
(ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਡੰਨ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
govind bhajan bintil nahee maanai.
Who accepts nothing else, but meditation on the Omniscient God.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਭਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
har kaa naam japat dukh jaa-ay.
By meditating on God’s Name with loving devotion, all sorrow is dispelled.
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਗ਼ਮ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੪॥
naanak bolai sahj subhaa-ay. ||4||
Nanak say this intuitively.||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ) ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ) ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ ॥
chaar padaarath jay ko maagai.
If one wants the four cardinal blessings, (righteousness, worldly wealth, procreation and salvation).
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਧਰਮ, ਅਰਥ, ਕਾਮ, ਮੋਖ) ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
saaDh janaa kee sayvaa laagai.
he should follow the teachings of the Saints (Guru).
(ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ।
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
jay ko aapunaadookh mitaavai.
If one wishes to end his sorrows,
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਮਿਟਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੇ,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
har har naam ridai sad gaavai.
then he should always remember (recite) God’s Name in the heart.
ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰੇ।
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਲੋਰੈ ॥
jay ko apunee sobhaa lorai.
If someone seeks gloryin God’s court,
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਰੈ ॥
saaDhsang ih ha-umaichhorai.
then he should seek holy congregation and renounce his ego.
ਤਾਂ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਇਸ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰੇ।
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤੇ ਡਰੈ ॥
jay ko janam maran tay darai.
If one dreads the cycle of birth and death,
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦੇ ਗੇੜ) ਤੋਂ ਡਰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੈ ॥
saaDh janaa kee sarnee parai.
then he should seek the refuge of the Holy.
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗੇ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
jis jan ka-o parabh daras pi-aasaa.
The one who has longing to unite with God,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
naanaktaa kai bal bal jaasaa. ||5||
O’ Nanak, I dedicate my life for that person. ||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ ਕਿ) ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਵਾਂ
ਸਗਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ ॥
sagal purakh meh purakh parDhaan.
Among all persons, the supreme person is the one,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
saaDhsang jaa kaa mitai abhimaan.
whose egotistical pride departs in the Company of the holy.
ਸਤ ਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਚਾ ॥
aapas ka-o jo jaanai neechaa.
One who considers himself as lowly,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋਊ ਗਨੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥
so-oo ganee-ai sabh tay oochaa.
should be accounted as the highest of all.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥
aa kaa man ho-ay sagal kee reenaa.
One who is very humble in his mind,
ਜੋ ਸਭ ਨਾਲ ਗਰੀਬੀ-ਸੁਭਾਉ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਚੀਨਾ ॥
har har naamtinghatghat cheenaa.
has truly recognized Naam, the essence of God in every heart.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈ ਹੈ।
ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਤੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਮਿਟਾਨਾ ॥
man apunaytay buraa mitaanaa.
One who eradicates all evil from his own mind,
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬੁਰਾਈ ਮਿਟਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਪੇਖੈ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ॥
paykhai sagal sarisat saajnaa.
looks upon all the world as his friend.
ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ (ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ) ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਜਨ ਸਮ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
sookh dookh jan samdaristaytaa.
One who looks upon pleasure and pain as one and the same,
ਜੋ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਗ਼ਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਲੇਪਾ ॥੬॥
naanak paap punn nahee laypaa. ||6||
O’ Nanak, he rises above the thought of sin or virtue (always does good deeds).||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਵ ਹੀ ਨੇਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਨਿਰਧਨ ਕਉ ਧਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
nirDhan ka-oDhantayro naa-o.
To the poor devotee, Your Name is his wealth.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਕੰਗਾਲ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਧਨ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਥਾਉ ॥
nithaavay ka-o naa-otayraa thaa-o.
To the supportless devotee, Your Name is his support.
ਨਿਆਸਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਮਾਨੇ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
nimaanay ka-o parabh tayro maan.
O’ God, You are the honor of the honorless
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਦਰ ਮਾਣ ਹੈ,
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕਉ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
sagalghataa ka-odayvhudaan.
To all the mortals, You are the Giver of gifts.
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
karan karaavanhaar su-aamee.
O’ my master, You do and cause everything to be done.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
sagalghataa kay antarjaamee.
O’ the knower of all the hearts,
ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ!
ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
apnee gat mit jaanhu aapay.
You alone know Your state and extent.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ (ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੀ) ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ;
ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
aapan sang aap parabh raatay.
O’ God, You Your are immersed Yourself.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਹੈਂ।
ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
tumHree ustat tumtay ho-ay.
O’ God,only You know Your greatness.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਹੀ (ਬਿਆਨ) ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੭॥
naanak avar na jaanas ko-ay. ||7||
O’ Nanak, no one else knows Your greatness. ||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ, ਕਿ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ
ਸਰਬ ਧਰਮ ਮਹਿ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਧਰਮੁ ॥
sarabDharam meh saraysatDharam.
Of all the faiths, the best Faith is,
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਇਹ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮੁ ॥
har ko naam jap nirmal karam.
is to meditate on God’s Name and performing immaculate deeds.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਅਮਲ ਕਮਾਉਣੇ
ਸਗਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
sagal kir-aa meh ootam kiri-aa.
Of all religious rituals, the most sublime ritual,
ਇਹ ਕੰਮ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥
saaDhsangdurmat mal hiri-aa.
is to erase the filth of evil thoughts in the Company of the Holy.
ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ (ਰੂਪ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ।
ਸਗਲ ਉਦਮ ਮਹਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਭਲਾ ॥
sagal udam meh udambhalaa.
Of all efforts, the best effort,
ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ (ਹੋਰ) ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਭਲਾ ਹੈ
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਸਦਾ ॥
har kaa naam japahu jee-a sadaa.
is to always recite the Name of God with love and passion.
ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦਿਲੋਂ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਨਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਗਲ ਬਾਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
sagal baanee meh amrit baanee.
Of all spoken words, the most ambrosial word,
ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਬਚਨ-ਬਿਲਾਸਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਮਈ ਬਚਨ-ਬਿਲਾਸ
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥
har ko jas sun rasan bakhaanee.
is to listen and utter God’s praises.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਸੁਣਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਉਚਾਰਨਾ।
ਸਗਲ ਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਓਹੁ ਊਤਮ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
sagal thaantay oh ootam thaan.
Of allplaces, the most sublime place,
ਉਹ (ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਰੂਪ) ਥਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ (ਤੀਰਥ) ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ-
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak jihghat vasai har naam. ||8||3||
O’ Nanak, is that heart in which the Name of God dwells. ||8||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥

ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰ ਇਆਨਿਆ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
nirgunee-aar i-aani-aa so parabh sadaa samaal.
O’ virtueless, ignorant mortal, always remember God.
ਹੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ! ਹੇ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ (ਮਨੁੱਖ)! ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੀਤਿ ਰਖੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥
jin kee-aatis cheet rakh naanak nibhee naal. ||1||
O’ Nanak, cherish in your consciousness the One who created you, He alone shall be with you when you depart from this world. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰੋ) ਰੱਖ, ਉਹੀ (ਤੇਰੇ) ਨਾਲ ਸਾਥ ਨਿਬਾਹੇਗਾ
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥

ਰਮਈਆ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਚੇਤਿ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥
rama-ee-aa kay gun chayt paraanee.
O’ mortal, remember the virtues of all-pervading God.
ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਸੋਹਣੇ ਰਾਮ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ,
ਕਵਨ ਮੂਲ ਤੇ ਕਵਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਨੀ ॥
kavan mooltay kavandaristaanee.
From what basic material (egg and sperm) He has created this beautiful body.
ਕਿਸ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ (ਤੈਨੂੰ) ਕੇਹਾ (ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਵਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ
ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਿਆ ॥
jintooN saaj savaar seegaari-aa.
He who fashioned, adorned and decorated you,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਣਾ ਸਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਗਰਭ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਆ ॥
garabh agan meh jineh ubaari-aa.
in the fire of the womb, He preserved you.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੇਟ (ਬੱਚੇਦਾਨੀ) ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਬਚਾਇਆ;
ਬਾਰ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੈ ਦੂਧ ॥
baar bivasthaatujheh pi-aaraidooDh.
He made provision for your nourishment (milk) in the infancy.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਲ-ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੀਣ ਲਈ ਦੁੱਧ ਦਿਤਾ।
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਸੁਖ ਸੂਧ ॥
bhar jobanbhojan sukh sooDh.
In the height of youth, He gave you the sense of food and other comforts.
ਭਰ-ਜੁਆਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਭੋਜਨ ਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਿੱਤੀ l
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਊਪਰਿ ਸਾਕ ਸੈਨ ॥
biraDh bha-i-aa oopar saak sain.
As you grew older, He provided you with family and friends to take care of you.
ਜਦ ਤੂੰ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਹੋਇਆ, ਤਾਂ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਕ-ਸੱਜਣ ਖੜੇ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੇ,
