ਜੇਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਤੇਹਾ ਤਿਨ ਰਾਹੁ ॥
jayhee surat tayhaa tin raahu.
As is their level of consciousness, so is their way of life.
ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਸੂਝ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ ਉਹ ਫੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਲੇਖਾ ਇਕੋ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ ॥੧॥
laykhaa iko aavhu jaahu. ||1||
According to our deeds, we come and go in reincarnation.
ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ) ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੀ) ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਾਹੇ ਜੀਅ ਕਰਹਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
kaahay jee-a karahi chaturaa-ee.
Why, O soul, why do you try to be so clever?
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਚਲਾਕੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਲੇਵੈ ਦੇਵੈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
layvai dayvai dhil na paa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God does not hesitate in giving or taking away (our consciousness).
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਝ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਭੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਲੈ ਭੀ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਤਾ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਂਦਾ
ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
tayray jee-a jee-aa kaa tohi.
All creatures are Yours and You are their Master.
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਖਸਮ ਹੈਂ।
ਕਿਤ ਕਉ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਵਹਿ ਰੋਹਿ ॥
kit ka-o saahib aavahi rohi.
(How can we think) that God is angry with us?
ਤੂੰ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਇਹ ਜੀਵ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ)।
ਜੇ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਵਹਿ ਰੋਹਿ ॥
jay too saahib aavahi rohi.
(Even if) we think that the Master is not happy with me,
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਵੇਂ (ਤਾਂ ਕਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਵੇਂ?)
ਤੂ ਓਨਾ ਕਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਓਹਿ ॥੨॥
too onaa kaa tayray ohi. ||2||
they belong to You and You belong to them,
ਤੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ
ਅਸੀ ਬੋਲਵਿਗਾੜ ਵਿਗਾੜਹ ਬੋਲ ॥
asee bolvigaarh vigaarhah bol.
By our foul language we spoil everything with our foul words.
ਆਪਾਂ ਬਦਜ਼ਬਾਨ, (ਆਪਦੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਹੀਣ) ਬਚਨਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਖ਼ਰਾਬ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਤੂ ਨਦਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤੋਲਹਿ ਤੋਲ ॥
too nadree andar toleh tol.
You still judge our actions with Your graceful glance.
ਪਰ ਤੂੰ (ਸਾਡੇ ਕੁਬੋਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਜਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਤਹ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ॥
jah karnee tah pooree mat.
When one’s conduct is good, then one’s consciousness also becomes perfect.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ-ਅਕਲ ਭੀ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ॥੩॥
karnee baajhahu ghatay ghat. ||3||
Without good deeds, (level of consciousness) decreases.
(ਉੱਚੇ) ਆਚਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਬੂਝ ਭੀ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
paranvat naanak gi-aanee kaisaa ho-ay.
Nanak beseeches, what kind of person is a wise man?
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਕੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਹੈ?
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
aap pachhaanai boojhai so-ay.
(Wise men) are those who have self-realization (feel part of God).
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ (ਅਕਲ-ਦਾਤਾ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
gur parsaad karay beechaar.
(This self-realization comes from) Grace of the Guru and contemplating Gurbani.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੇਤਾ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਯਾ ਦੁਆਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੩੦॥
so gi-aanee dargeh parvaan. ||4||30||
Such wise people are accepted in God’s court.
ਅਜੇਹਾ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ

ਤੂ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਮੈ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਕੈਸੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਲਹਾ ॥
too daree-aa-o daanaa beenaa mai machhulee kaisay ant lahaa.
You are like a vast river, All-knowing and All-seeing. I am a small fish (in your vast river; therefore) how can I understand Your limits?
ਤੂੰ ਇਕ ਦਰੀਆ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਇਕ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਮੱਛੀ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸੀ ਫੂਟਿ ਮਰਾ ॥੧॥
jah jah daykhaa tah tah too hai tujh tay niksee foot maraa. ||1||
Wherever I look, I only see You water; when I (as a small fish) am taken out (of the water), I die crying in pain (because of separation from You).
ਜਿਧਰ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਓਥੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ। ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੜਫ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਉ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਜਾਲੀ ॥
na jaanaa may-o na jaanaa jaalee.
I am not fearful of the fisherman or the net ( death or the cause of Death).
ਨਾਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਛੀ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਦੀ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਸ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ)।
ਜਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਸਮਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa dukh laagai taa tujhai samaalee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But when the pain (of Death) comes, then I will call upon You.
ਜਦ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਵਾਪਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਯਾਂਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
ਤੂ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਮੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
too bharpoor jaani-aa mai door.
(O’my God),You are always omnipresent; But it is I who have deemed You to be far away.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ (ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਤੇ ਦੂਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕਰੀ ਸੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
jo kachh karee so tayrai hadoor.
Whatever I do, I do in Your Presence.
(ਅਸਲ ਗੱਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਉਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਤੂ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਹਉ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਾਉ ॥
too daykheh ha-o mukar paa-o.
You see all my actions, and yet I ignore Your presence.
ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁੱਕਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਤੇਰੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
tayrai kamm na tayrai naa-ay. ||2||
I have not done deeds ordained by You, or remembered You with love.
ਮੈਂ ਨਾਹ ਉਸ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੋਵੇ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਜੇਤਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਹਉ ਖਾਉ ॥
jaytaa deh taytaa ha-o khaa-o.
Whatever You give me, that is what I eat.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਬਿਆ ਦਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
bi-aa dar naahee kai dar jaa-o.
There is no other door-unto which door should I go?
ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਮੈਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ (ਤੇ ਸਵਾਲੀ ਬਣਾਂ)।
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
naanak ayk kahai ardaas.
Nanak offers this one prayer:
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
jee-o pind sabh tayrai paas. ||3||
this body and soul are totally Yours.
ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੜੀ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਮੂਹ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਆਪੇ ਮੰਝਿ ਮਿਆਨੋੁ ॥
aapay nayrhai door aapay hee aapay manjh mi-aano.
He Himself is near, and far away; He Himself is in-between. He is everywhere.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੂਰ ਭੀ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਹਾਨੋੁ ॥
aapay vaykhai sunay aapay hee kudrat karay jahaano.
He Himself beholds, and listens. By His Creative Power, He created the world.
ਆਪੇ ਉਹ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੀ ਸਤਿਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਨੋੁ ॥੪॥੩੧॥
jo tis bhaavai naankaa hukam so-ee parvaano. ||4||31||
Whatever pleases Him, that command is acceptable, says Nank.
ਜੋ ਕੁਛ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਣ ਪਰਮਾਣੀਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਕੀਤਾ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
keetaa kahaa karay man maan.
Why should the created beings feel pride in their minds?
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਕੀਹ ਮਾਣ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੇ ਕੈ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
dayvanhaaray kai hath daan.
The Gift is in the Hands of the Great Giver.
ਦਾਤ ਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਸੋਇ ॥
bhaavai day-ay na day-ee so-ay.
It is his pleasure whether He gives or not.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਵੇ ਜਾਂ ਨਾਹ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਕੀਤੇ ਕੈ ਕਹਿਐ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
keetay kai kahi-ai ki-aa ho-ay. ||1||
What can be done by the order of the created beings?
ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਆਖਿਆਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ॥
aapay sach bhaavai tis sach.
God Himself is Truth; and Truth pleases Him.
ਸੱਚਾ ਉਹ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੱਚ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਧਾ ਕਚਾ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anDhaa kachaa kach nikach. ||1|| rahaa-o.
False and shallow is the blind ( ignorant) person.
ਆਤਮਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਿਕੰਮਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ) ਨਿਕੰਮਿਆਂ ਤੌਂ ਨਿਕੰਮਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੁਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਆਰਾਉ ॥
jaa kay rukh birakh aaraa-o.
The One who owns the trees of the forest and the plants of the garden, embellishes them.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਇਹ) ਰੁੱਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਜਾਵਟ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੇਹੀ ਧਾਤੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤਿਨ ਨਾਉ ॥
jayhee Dhaat tayhaa tin naa-o.
according to their origin, He gives them all their names.
ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਐਸੇ ਨਾਮ, ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਮਾਂਦਰੂ ਖ਼ਸਲਤ ਹੈ।
ਫੁਲੁ ਭਾਉ ਫਲੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਇ ॥
ful bhaa-o fal likhi-aa paa-ay.
The Flower and the Fruit of God’s Love are obtained by pre-ordained destiny.
ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਲਭਧ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦਾ ਪੁਸ਼ਪ ਤੇ ਮੇਵਾ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
aap beej aapay hee khaa-ay. ||2||
As we plant, so do we harvest and eat.
ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਆਪ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵੈਸਾ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਉਸਰਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਕਚੀ ਕੰਧ ਕਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਾਜੁ ॥
kachee kanDh kachaa vich raaj.
Our body is like a house with weak walls and our mind (the mason) is also untrained.
ਕੱਚੀ ਹੈ ਦੇਹਿ ਰੂਪੀ ਦੀਵਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਮਨ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਉਸਾਰੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਰਾਜ-ਕਾਰੀਗਰ ਹੈ l
ਮਤਿ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਫਿਕਾ ਸਾਦੁ ॥
mat aloonee fikaa saad.
The flavor of the intellect is bland and insipid without the Salt.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ ਭੀ ਫਿੱਕੀ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਭੀ ਫਿੱਕਾ (ਬੇ-ਰਸਾ) ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਣੇ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
naanak aanay aavai raas.
O’ Nanak, as He wills, He makes things right.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਧਾਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੁਧਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੩॥੩੨॥
vin naavai naahee saabaas. ||3||32||
Without meditating on God’s Name, no one is approved in His court.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ l

Sri Raag, by the First Guru, Fifth Beat:
ਅਛਲ ਛਲਾਈ ਨਹ ਛਲੈ ਨਹ ਘਾਉ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਕੈ ॥
achhal chhalaa-ee nah chhalai nah ghaa-o kataaraa kar sakai.
Neither the unperceivable ( Maya) can be deceived, nor any dagger can neutralize its evil effect.
ਨ ਠੱਗੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਮਾਇਆ) ਠੱਗਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਠੱਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਖੰਜਰ (ਇਸ ਉਤੇ) ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਲਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਇਸੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਟਲ ਪਲੈ ॥੧॥
ji-o saahib raakhai ti-o rahai is lobhee kaa jee-o tal palai. ||1||
As our Master keeps us, so do we exist.The mind of a greedy person starts wavering.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਥੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਥੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਅੱਗੇ ਡੋਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਤੇਲ ਦੀਵਾ ਕਿਉ ਜਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin tayl deevaa ki-o jalai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
How can the lamp of divine wisdom be lighted without the oil of meditation on God’s Name?
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ) ਤੇਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਦੀਵਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਟਹਕਦਾ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੇ?
ਪੋਥੀ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥ ਭਉ ਵਟੀ ਇਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
pothee puraan kamaa-ee-ai. bha-o vatee it tan paa-ee-ai.
Let the reading of your prayer book be the oil, and let the Fear of God be the wick for the lamp of this body.
ਧਾਰਮਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਠ ਦੇ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਦਾ ਤੇਲ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਬੱਤੀ ਇਸ ਦੇਹਿ (ਦੇ ਦੀਵੇ) ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ।
ਸਚੁ ਬੂਝਣੁ ਆਣਿ ਜਲਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
sach boojhan aan jalaa-ee-ai. ||2||
Light this lamp with the understanding of Truth.
ਸੱਚ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਦੀਵੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਲ।
ਇਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ਦੀਵਾ ਇਉ ਜਲੈ ॥
ih tayl deevaa i-o jalai.
This is the way how this lamp (of divine wisdom) is lighted.
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਤੇਲ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਹੀਏਂ ਇਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਦੀਵਾ ਟਹਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤਉ ਮਿਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar chaanan saahib ta-o milai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
It is only when you enlighten your mind (with divine wisdom), only then God is realized.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਇਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਾਣੀਆ ॥
it tan laagai baanee-aa.
When the Guru’s word shows its effect on the body,
ਜਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਅਸਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਣੀਆ ॥
sukh hovai sayv kamaanee-aa.
then joy and peace is received by humbly meditating on His Name.
ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ) ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
