Raag Gauree, Chhant, First Guru:
ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਉ ਏਕਲੜੀ ਬਨ ਮਾਹੇ ॥
sun naah parabhoo jee-o aykalrhee ban maahay.
O’ God, my venerable husband, please listen. I am all alone in the wilderness of the world.
ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਪਤੀ ਜੀ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣੋ। ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਹਾਂ।
ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰੈਗੀ ਨਾਹ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥
ki-o Dheeraigee naah binaa parabh vayparvaahay.
O’ my carefree husband God, how can I be solaced without You?
ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਪ੍ਰਵਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੈਂ ਖਸਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਧੀਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਫੜ ਸਕਦੀ l
ਧਨ ਨਾਹ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਬਿਖਮ ਰੈਣਿ ਘਣੇਰੀਆ ॥
Dhan naah baajhahu reh na saakai bikham rain ghanayree-aa.
A bride-soul cannot live without God-husband. Without Him, the night-life passes in great diffculity.
ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ (ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਸ ਦੀ) ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਔਖੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਹ ਨੀਦ ਆਵੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮੇਰੀਆ ॥
nah need aavai paraym bhaavai sun baynantee mayree-aa.
O’ God, please listen to my supplication, Your love is so dear to me that without You I cannot get any peace.
ਹੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੈ ਵਿਚ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਬਾਝਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਏਕਲੜੀ ਕੁਰਲਾਏ ॥
baajhahu pi-aaray ko-ay na saaray aykalrhee kurlaa-ay.
Besides the Husband-God, no one cares for the soul-bride and she wails alone.
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਸ ਜਿੰਦ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਵਾਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਦਾ। ਇਹ ਇਕੱਲੀ ਹੀ ਕੂਕਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥
naanak saa Dhan milai milaa-ee bin pareetam dukh paa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, only that soul-bride unites with her Master-God, whom the Guru unites. Without her beloved-God she suffers in agony.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ, ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਪਿਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਅੜੀ ਜੀਉ ਕਵਣੁ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥
pir chhodi-arhee jee-o kavan milaavai.
Who can unite that soul-bride who has been deserted by her husband-God?
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਤੀ ਨੇ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੌਣ (ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਰਸਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥
ras paraym milee jee-o sabad suhaavai.
The soul-bride who, through the Guru’s word, grows imbued in the love of God becomes spiritually beautiful.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜਿੰਦ-ਵਹੁਟੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ) ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦੇ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਦੀਪਕ ਦੇਹ ਉਜਾਰੈ ॥
sabday suhaavai taa pat paavai deepak dayh ujaarai.
Yes, when through the Guru’s word she becomes spiritually beautiful and the divine knowledge illuminates her mind, she obtains honor here and hereafter.
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ) ਸੋਹਣੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਖੱਟਦੀ ਹੈ; ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਦੀਵਾ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੈ ॥
sun sakhee sahaylee saach suhaylee saachay kay gun saarai.
Listen, O’ my friend, the soul-bride who contemplates on the virtues of the eternal God lives in peace and comfort.
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਸੁਣ! ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਸੌਖੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਾ ਪਿਰਿ ਰਾਵੀ ਬਿਗਸੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
satgur maylee taa pir raavee bigsee amrit banee.
When the true Guru attuned her to his Word, then the husband-God united her with Himself and she felt delighted singing the ambrosial words.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਿਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲਿਆ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਕੌਲ-ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਤਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਜਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
naanak saa Dhan taa pir raavay jaa tis kai man bhaanee. ||2||
O’ Nanak, the soul-bride enjoys the company of her Husband-God only when she is pleasing to His mind.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਨੀਘਰੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੇ ॥
maa-i-aa mohnee neeghree-aa jee-o koorh muthee koorhi-aaray.
Fascination with Maya has driven her out divine state, because she has been deceived by the deception of short lived worldly wealth.
ਮੋਹਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਧਨ-ਦੌਲਤ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੇਘਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਝੂਠੀ ਨੂੰ ਝੂਠ ਨੇ ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਉ ਖੂਲੈ ਗਲ ਜੇਵੜੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
ki-o khoolai gal jayvarhee-aa jee-o bin gur at pi-aaray.
How can the noose of Maya around her neck be untied, without the Most Beloved Guru?
ਪਰਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਵਾਨ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਰਦਨ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੇ?
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
har pareet pi-aaray sabad veechaaray tis hee kaa so hovai.
The one who gets imbued with God’s love by reflecting on the Guru’s word, becomes the devotee of God.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਨਾਵਣ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਤਰ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
punn daan anayk naavan ki-o antar mal Dhovai.
How can one wash off the dirt of vices from within the heart by giving in charities and performing countless ablutions at holy places.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪੁੰਨ-ਦਾਨ ਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਧੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਬੇਬਾਣੈ ॥
naam binaa gat ko-ay na paavai hath nigrahi baybaanai.
Without meditation on Naam, no one attains high spiritual state through obstinate self-control and living in the wilderness.
ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ, ਹਠੀਲੀ ਸਵੈ-ਰਿਆਜ਼ਤ ਅਤੇ ਬੀਆਬਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਘਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
naanak sach ghar sabad sinjaapai dubiDhaa mahal ke jaanai. ||3||
O’ Nanak, the true home of God, the heart, is recognized only through the Guru’s word and the one who is in love with duality cannot recognize it.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰੇ ਦੀ ਝਾਕ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੋ ॥
tayraa naam sachaa jee-o sabad sachaa veechaaro.
O’ Dear God; True is Your Name, True is contemplation of Your virtues.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ l
ਤੇਰਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਸਚਾ ਜੀਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੋ ॥
tayraa mahal sachaa jee-o naam sachaa vaapaaro.
O’ dear God, True is Your court and meditating on Naam is the true trade.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੋ ॥
naam kaa vaapaar meethaa bhagat laahaa andino.
Yes, sweet is the trade of meditation on Naam, and there is always a spiritual gain in devotional worship.
ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਸੁਆਦਲਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੈ, ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਧਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੋ ॥
tis baajh vakhar ko-ay na soojhai naam layvhu khin khino.
Beside remembering God, there is no other more profitable trade, therefore, O’ my friends remember Him with loving devotion at every moment.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਦੇਵੇ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਦਾ ਖਿਨ ਖਿਨ, ਪਲ ਪਲ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ।
ਪਰਖਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
parakh laykhaa nadar saachee karam poorai paa-i-aa.
The one who understood the worth of meditation on God’s Name, has realized Him through His Grace.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਵਪਾਰ ਦੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਅਟੱਲ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਹੋਈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ-ਵੱਖਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak naam mahaa ras meethaa gur poorai sach paa-i-aa. ||4||2||
O’ Nanak, the Nectar of God’s Name is very sweet, this everlasting gift of Naam is obtained through the perfect Guru.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ, ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈl

ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satnaam kartaa purakh gurparsaad.
One eternal, Creator, all pervading God. Realized by the Guru’s Grace:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ, ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਬਿਨਉ ਕਰੇ ਜੀਉ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
saa Dhan bin-o karay jee-o har kay gun saaray.
The soul-bride who longs to reunite with God offers her prayers to God and dwells upon His Glorious Virtues.
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਭਾਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
khin pal reh na sakai jee-o bin har pi-aaray.
She cannot live peacefully even for a moment without her dear God.
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਭਰ ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭਰ (ਸ਼ਾਂਤ-ਚਿੱਤ) ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
bin har pi-aaray reh na saakai gur bin mahal na paa-ee-ai.
Yes, she cannot live in peace without her beloved God; but He can not be realized without the Guru’s teachings.
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ-ਚਿੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ। ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਲੱਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਪਰੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥
jo gur kahai so-ee par keejai tisnaa agan bujhaa-ee-ai.
The fire of desire is extinguished by faithfully following the Guru’s teachings.
ਜੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
har saachaa so-ee tis bin avar na ko-ee bin sayvi-ai sukh na paa-ay.
God alone is eternal, there is none other besides Him, and without remembering Him with love and devotion the soul-bride cannot enjoy the eternal bliss.
ਇੱਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਾਣ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੧॥
naanak saa Dhan milai milaa-ee jis no aap milaa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, only that soul-bride is united with God, whom He Himself unites through the Guru.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਮਿਲਾ ਲਏ l
ਧਨ ਰੈਣਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੜੀਏ ਜੀਉ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
Dhan rain suhaylrhee-ay jee-o har si-o chit laa-ay.
The soul-bride passes the life-night in comfort and bliss only when she remains attuned to God,
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ-ਰੂਪ) ਰਾਤ ਸੌਖੀ ਬੀਤਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
satgur sayvay bhaa-o karay jee-o vichahu aap gavaa-ay.
and follows the true Guru’s teachings with love and eradicates her self-conceit.
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਮਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ-ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਭਾਓ ॥
vichahu aap gavaa-ay har gun gaa-ay an-din laagaa bhaa-o.
Yes, the soul-bride who sheds her ego and sings praises of God, always remains imbued with God’s love.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਦਾ ਗਾਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਮੇਲੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਓ ॥
sun sakhee sahaylee jee-a kee maylee gur kai sabad samaa-o.
By listening to the Guru’s word from her soul mate friends, she remains merged in the Guru’s word.
ਮਿਲੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਸਖੀਆਂ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹੋਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
