ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
jit ko laa-i-aa tit hee laagaa.
Everyone does the task to which one has been assigned by God.
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਉਸੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਹੀ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੮॥੬॥
so sayvak naanak jis bhaagaa. ||8||6||
O’ Nanak, only that person becomes God’s devotee who is so blessed.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਜਾਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ l

Raag Gauree, Fifth Guru:
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਜੈਸੇ ਸਰਪ ਆਰਜਾਰੀ ॥
bin simran jaisay sarap aarjaaree.
Without meditating on God’s Name, one’s life is like that of a snake (long & evil).
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਸੱਪ ਵਰਗੀ ਹੈ। (ਉਮਰ ਤਾਂ ਲੰਮੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਸੱਪ ਸਦਾ ਡੰਗ ਹੀ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।)
ਤਿਉ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
ti-o jeeveh saakat naam bisaaree. ||1||
Similarly forsaking God, faithless cynics live a life of sin and harm to others.
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਊਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਮੌਕਾ ਬਣਨ ਤੇ ਡੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ)
ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਆ ॥
ayk nimakh jo simran meh jee-aa.
The one who has lived even an instant in lovingly meditating on God,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਇਕ ਅੱਖ ਝਮਕਣ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਸਮਾ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਊਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੋਟਿ ਦਿਨਸ ਲਾਖ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kot dinas laakh sadaa thir thee-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
consider that he has lived not just for millions of days, but he has become immortal forever. |1||Pause||
ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਲਈ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਸ ॥
bin simran Dharig karam karaas.
Without remembering God, one’s all other worldly deeds are cursed.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨੇ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੀ ਹਨ,
ਕਾਗ ਬਤਨ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਹਿ ਵਾਸ ॥੨॥
kaag batan bistaa meh vaas. ||2||
Like the crow’s beak , he dwells in the filth of vices.
ਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਚੁੰਝ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਗੰਦਗੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਭਏ ਕੂਕਰ ਕਾਮ ॥
bin simran bha-ay kookar kaam.
Without remembrance of God, they become greedy like dogs.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਾਕਤ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਪੂਤ ਨਿਨਾਮ ॥੩॥
saakat baysu-aa poot ninaam. ||3||
The faithless cynics become as shameless as the offspring of a prostitute whose father’s name is unknown.(3)
ਅਧਰਮੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ (ਨਿਲੱਜ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਉ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੀਙ ਛਤਾਰਾ ॥
bin simran jaisay seeny chhataaraa.
Without meditating on God, they are burden on society like horns on a ram.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਭਾਰ ਹੀ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਛੱਤਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਸਿੰਗ;
ਬੋਲਹਿ ਕੂਰੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਮੁਖੁ ਕਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
boleh koor saakat mukh kaaraa. ||4||
The faithless cynic always lie and are dishonored everywhere.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਦਾ) ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੁਕਾਲਖ ਹੀ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਗਰਧਭ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ॥
bin simran garDhabh kee ni-aa-ee.
Without the remembrance of God, they spend their lives in filth (of vices) like a donkey.
ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਖੋਤੇ ਵਾਂਗ (ਸਦਾ ਸੁਆਹ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੇਟ ਕੇ) ਮਲੀਨ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਸਾਕਤ ਥਾਨ ਭਰਿਸਟ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥੫॥
saakat thaan bharisat firaa-ee. ||5||
The faithless cynics wander through many degraded places of evil deeds.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਕੁਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਗੰਦੇ ਥਾਈਂ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੂਕਰ ਹਰਕਾਇਆ ॥
bin simran kookar harkaa-i-aa.
Without meditating on God, they become like a rabid dogs.
ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਹਲਕੇ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਸਾਕਤ ਲੋਭੀ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
saakat lobhee banDh na paa-i-aa. ||6||
The faithless cynics remain entangled in greed and do not follow any moral restrictions.
ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ ਭੀ) ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਘਾਤੀ ॥
bin simran hai aatam ghaatee.
Without remembering God, the mortal is committing himself to spiritual death.
ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਕਤ ਨੀਚ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੁਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੭॥
saakat neech tis kul nahee jaatee. ||7||
The faithless cynic is wretched and loses his family-name or social standing.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਲ ਰੁਚੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਾਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਕੁਲ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ l
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਇਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
jis bha-i-aa kirpaal tis satsang milaa-i-aa.
The one on whom God becomes merciful, He unites that person with the holy congregation.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਆ ਰਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੭॥
kaho naanak gur jagat taraa-i-aa. ||8||7||
Nanak says, in this way, through the Guru, God saves the humanity from the world ocean of vices,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
gur kai bachan mohi param gat paa-ee.
Through the Guru’s Word, I have attained the supreme spiritual status.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਈ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ॥੧॥
gur poorai mayree paij rakhaa-ee. ||1||
The Perfect Guru has preserved my honor.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲਈ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
gur kai bachan Dhi-aa-i-o mohi naa-o.
Following the Guru’s Word, I have meditated on God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parsaad mohi mili-aa thaa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By Guru’s Grace, I have obtained a place in God’s court.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਥਾਂ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਰਸਨ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
gur kai bachan sun rasan vakhaanee.
I listen to the Guru’s Word, and keep uttering the praises of God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
gur kirpaa tay amrit mayree banee. ||2||
By Guru’s Grace, my own words have become sweet like nectar.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਸੁਧਾਰਸ ਵਰਗੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪੁ ॥
gur kai bachan miti-aa mayraa aap.
By acting on the Guru’s teachings my ego has been erased.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮਿਟ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਇਆ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੩॥
gur kee da-i-aa tay mayraa vad partaap. ||3||
By the Guru’s grace, I have obtained great glory.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਬੜਾ ਤੇਜ-ਪਰਤਾਪ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਮੁ ॥
gur kai bachan miti-aa mayraa bharam.
By following the Guru’s teachings, my doubt has been removed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੪॥
gur kai bachan paykhi-o sabh barahm. ||4||
Through the Guru’s Word, I have realized God pervading everywhere.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ -ਵੱਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ॥
gur kai bachan keeno raaj jog.
By following the Guru’s teachings, I have enjoyed the (bliss of) union with God while still living in the household.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥੫॥
gur kai sang tari-aa sabh log. ||5||
Everybody who follow the Guru’s teachings is ferried across the world ocean of vices.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
gur kai bachan mayray kaaraj siDh.
Through the Guru’s Word, my affairs are resolved.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਰਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਉ ਨਿਧਿ ॥੬॥
gur kai bachan paa-i-aa naa-o niDh. ||6||
Through the Guru’s Word, I have obtained the treasures of Naam.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥
jin jin keenee mayray gur kee aasaa.
Whoever has placed his faith in my Guru,
ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਟੀਐ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਾ ॥੭॥
tis kee katee-ai jam kee faasaa. ||7||
that person has been liberated from the fear of death.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਕੱਟੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਮੁ ॥
gur kai bachan jaagi-aa mayraa karam.
Following the Guru’s teachings , I have become fortunate.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਜਾਗ ਪਈ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੮॥੮॥
naanak gur bhayti-aa paarbarahm. ||8||8||
O’ Nanak, meeting the Guru, I have realized the Supreme God. (8) (8)
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ l

Raag Gauree, Fifth Guru:
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ॥
tis gur ka-o simra-o saas saas.
I remember that Guru with each and every breath.
ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਹ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur mayray paraan satgur mayree raas. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Guru is my breath of life, the True Guru is my spiritual wealth. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਜੀਵਾ ॥
gur kaa darsan daykh daykh jeevaa.
I feel spiritually alive by continually beholding the sight of the Guru.
ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਧੋਇ ਧੋਇ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥
gur kay charan Dho-ay Dho-ay peevaa. ||1||
I humbly follow my Guru’s teaching. ||1||
ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਧੋਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਨਿਤ ਮਜਨੁ ਕਰਉ ॥
gur kee rayn nit majan kara-o.
I daily clean my mind by listening to the Guru’s words,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਦਾ ਜਲ ਹੈ ਉਸ) ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਹਰਉ ॥੨॥
janam janam kee ha-umai mal hara-o. ||2||
and thus, I am getting rid of the filth of ego of many previous births. ||2||
ਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੀ (ਇਕੱਠੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੋਈ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ l
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਝੂਲਾਵਉ ਪਾਖਾ ॥
tis gur ka-o jhoolaava-o paakhaa.
I serve with complete devotion the Guru,
ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਪੱਖਾ ਝੱਲਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਮਹਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਹਾਥੁ ਦੇ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੩॥
mahaa agan tay haath day raakhaa. ||3||
who has saved me from the intense fire of vices by giving his support.
ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਵੱਡੀ ਅੱਗ ਤੋਂ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਹੱਥ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਬਚਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਢੋਵਉ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
tis gur kai garihi dhova-o paanee.
I serve with complete devotion the Guru,
ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਲਈ ਜਲ ਢੋਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੪॥
jis gur tay akal gat jaanee. ||4||
from Whom I have learnt about God, who never changes.
ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕਦੇ ਘਟਦਾ ਵਧਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ l
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੀਸਉ ਨੀਤ ॥
tis gur kai garihi peesa-o neet.
I serve with complete devotion the Guru,
ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਦਾਣੇ ਪੀਹਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵੈਰੀ ਸਭ ਮੀਤ ॥੫॥
jis parsaad vairee sabh meet. ||5||
by whose grace all my enemies have become friends.
ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ) ਵੈਰੀ (ਦਿੱਸ ਰਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਹੁਣ) ਸਾਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਜਾਪ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ
