ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
tat na cheeneh baneh pand paraalaa. ||2||
They do not understand the purpose of life, and keep loading themselves with the worthless bundles of straw of religious controversies.
ਉਹ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਨੋਰਥ) ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦੇ, ਉਹ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਚਰਚਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਪਰਾਲੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੰਡਾਂ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
manmukh agi-aan kumaarag paa-ay.
The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the misguided path of evil.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੇਸਮਝੀ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
har naam bisaari-aa baho karam drirh-aa-ay.
They forget God’s Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਕਿਆਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
bhavjal doobay doojai bhaa-ay. ||3||
They drown in the terrifying world-ocean of vices, in the love of duality.
ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੁਬ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
maa-i-aa kaa muhtaaj pandit kahaavai.
Such a person, dependent on worldly wealth, calls himself a Pundit,
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾਲੂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਪੰਡਿਤ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
bikhi-aa raataa bahut dukh paavai.
and being imbued with the love of Maya, he suffers immense pain.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ) ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
jam kaa gal jayvrhaa nit kaal santaavai. ||4||
The noose of the Messenger of Death is around his neck; he is constantly tormented by the fear of death.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
gurmukh jamkaal nayrh na aavai.
The demon (fear) of death does not come near the Guru’s follower.
ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਢੁੱਕਦੀ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥
ha-umai doojaa sabad jalaavai.
Through the Guru’s word, he burns away all ego and duality.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਸੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
naamay raatay har gun gaavai. ||5||
Imbued with God’s Name, he keeps singing His praises.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
maa-i-aa daasee bhagtaa kee kaar kamaavai.
Maya is the maid of God’s devotees; it works for them.
ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਭਗਤਾ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
charnee laagai taa mahal paavai.
The one who humbly serves these devotees also finds a place at God’s court.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
sad hee nirmal sahj samaavai. ||6||
He is forever immaculate; he is absorbed in intuitive peace.
ਉਹ ਭੀ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਮਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
har kathaa suneh say Dhanvant diseh jug maahee.
They who listen to God’s praises are seen to be the spiritually wealthy people in this world.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ) ਧਨਾਢ ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਹੀ ॥
tin ka-o sabh niveh an-din pooj karaahee.
Everyone bow down to them, and always adore them.
ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਨਿਊਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਆਦਰ-ਸਤਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
sehjay gun raveh saachay man maahee. ||7||
Intuitively, they keep singing the praises of God in their minds.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
poorai satgur sabad sunaa-i-aa.
The person to whom the true Guru has revealed the Shabad (Divine word),
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਾਈ ਹੈ,
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਚਉਥੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
tarai gun maytay cha-uthai chit laa-i-aa.
has eradicated the three modes of Maya (vice, virtue and power) from his mind, and he has attuned himself to the fourth state (free from the effect of Maya).
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਮਿਟਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਸਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak ha-umai maar barahm milaa-i-aa. ||8||4||
O’ Nanak, subduing egotism, the Guru has united him with God.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ

Raag Gauree, by the Third Guru:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
barahmaa vayd parhai vaad vakhaanai.
A Pundit reads vedas, uttered by Brahma, and enters in philosophical strife.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੇ ਰਚੇ ਹੋਏ ਵੇਦ ਵਾਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਝਗੜੇ ਝਾਂਜੇ ਵਰਨਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
antar taamas aap na pachhaanai.
His mind is filled with darkness of ignorance; he does not reflect on himself.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੧॥
taa parabh paa-ay gur sabad vakhaanai. ||1||
Such a person can only realize God by uttering and following the Guru’s word.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥
gur sayvaa kara-o fir kaal na khaa-ay.
So, serve the Guru by following his teachings, and you shall not be consumed by the fear of death.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਤਦ ਮੌਤ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਵੇਗੀ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
manmukh khaaDhay doojai bhaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The self-willed manmukhs have been consumed by the love of duality.
ਹੋਰਸੁ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੇ ਅਧਰਮੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸੀਧੇ ॥
gurmukh paraanee apraaDhee seeDhay.
By following the Guru’s teachings, many sinful mortals become righteous.
ਪਾਪੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੀਧੇ ॥
gur kai sabad antar sahj reeDhay.
Through the Guru’s Word, they find intuitive peace and poise deep within.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਧੇ ॥੨॥
mayraa parabh paa-i-aa gur kai sabad seeDhay. ||2||
By following the Guru’s word they have become successful in realizing my God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਸਫਲ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
satgur maylay parabh aap milaa-ay.
God unites those with Himself whom the true Guru wants to be united with God.
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਮਿਲਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
mayray parabh saachay kai man bhaa-ay.
They become pleasing to my eternal God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
har gun gaavahi sahj subhaa-ay. ||3||
They sing the Glorious Praises of God, in the poise of celestial peace.
ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
bin gur saachay bharam bhulaa-ay.
Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਏ ॥
manmukh anDhay sadaa bikh khaa-ay.
These ignorant, self-willed, always consume the poison of false worldly pursuits.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਹੀ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
jam dand saheh sadaa dukh paa-ay. ||4||
They bear the brunt of the demon of death and always suffer in pain.
ਉਹ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ) ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਜਮੂਆ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
jamoo-aa na johai har kee sarnaa-ee.
The demon of death cannot even catch sight of one who enters the refuge of God.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਜਮ ਉਸ ਵਲ ਤੱਕ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ l
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
ha-umai maar sach liv laa-ee.
Subduing egotism, he lovingly remains attuned to the eternal God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
sadaa rahai har naam liv laa-ee. ||5||
He keep his consciousness constantly focused on God’s Name.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪਵਿਤਾ ॥
satgur sayveh say jan nirmal pavitaa.
They who serve and follow the True Guru are pure and immaculate.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਾ ॥
man si-o man milaa-ay sabh jag jeetaa.
By uniting their mind with the mind of the Guru (and following his advice), they conquer the entire world.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥੬॥
in biDh kusal tayrai mayray meetaa. ||6||
O’ my friend, in this way,you too shall find happiness.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਿੱਤਰ! (ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏਂ, ਤਾਂ) ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭੀ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹੇਗਾ
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satguroo sayvay so fal paa-ay.
The one who faithfully follows Guru’s advice will obtain this reward:
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਇਹ) ਫਲ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
hirdai naam vichahu aap gavaa-ay.
that God’s Name comes to dwell, within his mind, and he dispels all his ego.
ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੭॥
anhad banee sabad vajaa-ay. ||7||
The unstruck melody of the Shabad (divine word) vibrates within him.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਵਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਨ ਸੀਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
satgur tay kavan kavan na seeDho mayray bhaa-ee.
O’ my brother, who does not succeed in life by following the Guru’s teachings?
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਕੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ?
ਭਗਤੀ ਸੀਧੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
bhagtee seeDhay dar sobhaa paa-ee.
The devotees become successful in life and are honored in God’s Court.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak raam naam vadi-aa-ee. ||8||5||
O’ Nanak, there is always glory in (meditation of) God’s Name.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ l

Raag Gauree, by the Third Guru:
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
tarai gun vakhaanai bharam na jaa-ay.
The one who is interested only in three modes of Maya ( vice, virtue and power) his mind always remain in doubts.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਦਿਲ-ਚਸਪੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
banDhan na tooteh mukat na paa-ay.
His bonds (of Maya) are not broken, and he does not obtain liberation.
ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁੱਟਦੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
mukat daataa satgur jug maahi. ||1||
The True Guru is the Bestower of liberation from the love of maya in this world.
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਸਿਰਫ਼) ਗੁਰੂ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
gurmukh paraanee bharam gavaa-ay.
By following the advice of Guru, a person dispels all the delusions.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sahj Dhun upjai har liv laa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The celestial tune arises in his mind, which attunes him to the remembrance of God.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੀ ਰੌ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਲੈ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
tarai gun kaalai kee sir kaaraa.
They who are controlled by the three modes of Maya have death hovering over their heads.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਲ-ਚਸਪੀ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸਦਾ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
