ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
gurmukh vichahu ha-umai jaa-ay.
By following Guru’s teachings, ego departs from within.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
gurmukh mail na laagai aa-ay.
The dirt of egoistic thoughts does not soil the mind of Guru’s follower.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਆ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੰਬੜਦੀ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
gurmukh naam vasai man aa-ay. ||2||
God’s Name, comes to dwell within the mind of a Guru’s follower.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh karam Dharam sach ho-ee.
All deeds and faith of a guru’s follower are based on truth.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੱਚ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦਾ ਅਮਲ ਅਤੇ ਮਜ਼ਹਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਦੋਈ ॥
gurmukh ahaNkaar jalaa-ay do-ee.
A guru’s follower burns down ego and duality from his mind.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
gurmukh naam ratay sukh ho-ee. ||3||
Being imbued with the love of God, a Guru’s follower enjoys peace.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
aapnaa man parboDhahu boojhhu so-ee.
O’ Pandit, First awaken your own mind and understand the existence of God yourself.
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਾਓ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝੋ।
ਲੋਕ ਸਮਝਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
lok samjhaavhu sunay na ko-ee.
Otherwise, people won’t listen to you, even when you try to preach them.
ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀ ਚਾਹੇ ਤੂੰ ਲੋਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰ, ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣੇਗਾ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
gurmukh samjhahu sadaa sukh ho-ee. ||4||
Following Guru’s teachings, understand the right way of life, you will always live in bliss.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਤੁਸੀ ਆਪ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ) ਸਮਝੋ, ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੰਫੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
manmukh damf bahut chaturaa-ee.
The self-willed is overly clever and puts up a false show,
ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬੜੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
jo kichh kamaavai so thaa-ay na paa-ee.
whatever he does is not acceptable in God’s court.
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੫॥
aavai jaavai tha-ur na kaa-ee. ||5||
Therefore he remains in the cycles of birth and death and finds no spiritual peace anywhere.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
manmukh karam karay bahut abhimaanaa.
The egocentric performs religious rituals in great pride.
ਆਪ-ਹੁਦਰਾ ਘਣੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਕਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਗ ਜਿਉ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
bag ji-o laa-ay bahai nit Dhi-aanaa.
He pretends to be sitting in meditation, but actually like a stork his mind is fixed on the next victim.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਬਗਲੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੀ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
jam pakrhi-aa tab hee pachhutaanaa. ||6||
He will repent, when caught by the demon of death.
ਉਹ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੇਗਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰੋਂ ਆ) ਫੜਿਆ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
bin satgur sayvay mukat na ho-ee.
Without following Guru’s advice, liberation is not obtained.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਦੰਭ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
gur parsaadee milai har so-ee.
Only by the Guru’s Grace, one can realize God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਹ (ਘਟ ਘਟ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
gur daataa jug chaaray ho-ee. ||7||
It is through the Guru’s grace that one meets God. Not just in this age, but in all the four ages, only Guru has been the means to salvation.
ਚੌਹਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
gurmukh jaat pat naamay vadi-aa-ee.
For the Guru’s follower, God’s Name is his honor, social status and glory.
ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਾਤੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਇਰ ਕੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
saa-ir kee putree bidaar gavaa-ee.
Through the Naam, the Guru’s follower eradicates the worldly attachments.
ਨਾਮਿ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਪਰੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak bin naavai jhoothee chaturaa-ee. ||8||2||
O’ Nanak, without Naam all the cleverness is false.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਵਿਖਾਣੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ

Raag Gauree, Third Guru:
ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਭਾਈ ॥
is jug kaa Dharam parhahu tum bhaa-ee.
O’ my brothers, read and reflect on what is written in the holy books about the righteous way of life for this day and age.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਕਰਤੱਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੋ (ਭਾਵ, ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖੋ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕੀਹ ਉੱਦਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
poorai gur sabh sojhee paa-ee.
The Perfect Guru has bestowed this clear understanding,
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ,
ਐਥੈ ਅਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥
aithai agai har naam sakhaa-ee. ||1||
that both here and hereafter, it is God’s Name who will be our only companion.
ਕਿ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ ਅਸਲ) ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ l
ਰਾਮ ਪੜਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
raam parhahu man karahu beechaar.
O’ my friends, read about God and reflect on Him in your your mind,
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਪੜ੍ਹੋ, (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰੋ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਉਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parsaadee mail utaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and through Guru’s Grace wash off the filth of your vices.
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ l
ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
vaad viroDh na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
God is not realized by entering into any religious controversies.
ਕਿਸੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਬਹਸ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
man tan feekaa doojai bhaa-ay.
By the love of duality, the body and mind remain spiritually unsatisfied.
ਹੋਰ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੁੰਞਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabad sach liv laa-ay. ||2||
It is only through Guru’s word that one can attune to the eternal God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਨ ਜੋੜ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
ha-umai mailaa ih sansaaraa.
This world is polluted with egotism.
ਹਉਮੈ (ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ) ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਮਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
nit tirath naavai na jaa-ay ahaNkaaraa.
By taking cleansing baths daily at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, egotism is not eliminated.
ਸਦਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਉਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਭੀ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin gur bhaytay jam karay khu-aaraa. ||3||
Without meeting the Guru, they are tormented by the fear Death.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
so jan saachaa je ha-umai maarai.
Only that person is True, (embodiment of God) who has conquered his ego.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥
gur kai sabad panch sanghaarai.
Through Guru’s word, he conquers all the five passions of lust, greed, anger, ego and emotional attachment.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੪॥
aap tarai saglay kul taarai. ||4||
He saves himself, and also saves all his entire lineage as well.
ਉਹ ਆਪ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੁਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਟਿ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi nat baajee paa-ee.
(God), like a juggler, has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya,
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨਟ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਹ (ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ) ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਰਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥
manmukh anDh rahay laptaa-ee.
and the self-willed, blinded by the Maya, are getting entangled in this drama.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਨਾਲ) ਚੰਬੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh alipat rahay liv laa-ee. ||5||
But the Guru’s followers remain detached from this drama by remaining attuned to God’s love.
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
bahutay bhaykh karai bhaykh-Dhaaree.
The disguiser, who thinks righteousness is only the outer religious garb, puts on various religious disguises.
ਨਿਰੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਮਝਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
antar tisnaa firai ahaNkaaree.
But within himself, he carries the desire for worldly riches and keeps wandering in ego.
ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
aap na cheenai baajee haaree. ||6||
He does not reflect on himself, and therefore loses the game of life.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਰਖਦਾ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਕਾਪੜ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
kaaparh pahir karay chaturaa-ee.
Putting on religious robes, he acts so clever,
ਨਿਰੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ (ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi at bharam bhulaa-ee.
but in fact due to love for Maya he is totally lost in extreme doubts.
(ਪਰ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
bin gur sayvay bahut dukh paa-ee. ||7||
Without following the Guru’s advice, he suffers immense pain.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਾਹ ਆਉਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
naam ratay sadaa bairaagee.
They, who remain imbued with the love of God, are always detached from worldly affairs.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਵੈਰਾਗਮਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
garihee antar saach liv laagee.
Even while taking care of their families, they remain attuned to God.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਗਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak satgur sayveh say vadbhaagee. ||8||3||
O’ Nanak, they who follow the teachings of the True Guru are very fortunate.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ

Raag Gauree, by the Third Guru:
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਵੇਦ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥
barahmaa mool vayd abhi-aasaa.
The Brahma is believed to be the founder of the study of the Vedas.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵੇਦ-ਅਭਿਆਸ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)
ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਦੇਵ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
tis tay upjay dayv moh pi-aasaa.
It is also believed that from him emanated all other gods, but they all appear to be enticed by worldly attachment and desire.
ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਮੰਨੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੀ ਦੱਸੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥
tarai gun bharmay naahee nij ghar vaasaa. ||1||
These gods kept wandering in the three modes of maya (vice, virtue and power), and they did not get place in God’s court.
ਉਹ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹੇ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਨਾਹ ਮਿਲਿਆ
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
ham har raakhay satguroo milaa-i-aa.
God has saved me from the Maya by uniting me with True Guru,
ਸਾਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ) ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
an-din bhagat har naam drirh-aa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
who has instructed me about always remembering God with love and devotion.
ਜਿਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੱਕਾ ਟਿਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ l
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
tarai gun banee barahm janjaalaa.
The gospel of Brahma keeps people entangled in the three impulses of Maya.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾ ਦੇ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥
parh vaad vakaaneh sir maaray jamkaalaa.
After reading this Gospel, the scholars enter into controversies and are tormented by the fear of death.
ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬਹਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਆਪਣੀ ਚੋਟ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
