ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
naam na cheeteh upaavanhaaraa.
They do not remember the Name of the Creat
ਉਹ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ।
ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
mar jameh fir vaaro vaaraa. ||2||
They continue in the cycles of birth and death.
ਉਹ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੰਮਦੇ ਹਨ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਅੰਧੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
anDhay guroo tay bharam na jaa-ee.
A spiritually blind guru cannot appease the wandering mind of his follower.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਈ ॥
mool chhod laagay doojai bhaa-ee.
Abandoning the root Source (God), they become attached to the love of duality.
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ-ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
bikh kaa maataa bikh maahi samaa-ee. ||3||
Intoxicated with poison of Maya, they remain immersed in that poison.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਭਰਮਾਏ ॥
maa-i-aa kar mool jantar bharmaa-ay.
Believing Maya as basic support of life, people keep wandering in the search of worldly wealth.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ) ਆਸਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ) ਭਟਕਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥
har jee-o visri-aa doojai bhaa-ay.
They have forgotten the Dear God, and they are in love with duality.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਭੁਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
jis nadar karay so param gat paa-ay. ||4||
The supreme status is obtained only by those who are blessed with His Grace.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਰਹਿਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥
antar saach baahar saach vartaa-ay.
One who has Truth (God) pervading within, radiates Truth outwardly as well.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੱਚ, ਉਹ ਬਾਹਰ ਭੀ ਸੱਚ ਹੀ ਵੰਡਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਛਪੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਰਖੈ ਛਪਾਏ ॥
saach na chhapai jay ko rakhai chhapaa-ay.
The (bliss of) Truth does not remain hidden, even though one may try to hide it.
ਸੱਚ ਲੁਕਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਆਦਮੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਰੱਖੇ।
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੫॥
gi-aanee boojheh sahj subhaa-ay. ||5||
The spiritually wise knows this intuitively.
ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮਵੇਤਾ,(ਗਿਆਨੀ) ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
gurmukh saach rahi-aa liv laa-ay.
A Guru’s follower always remains attuned to the eternal God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
ha-umai maa-i-aa sabad jalaa-ay.
Ego and Maya are burned away through the Guru’s Word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦਾ ਮੋਹ) ਸਾੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
mayraa parabh saachaa mayl milaa-ay. ||6||
My True God unites a Guru’s follower with Himself.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
satgur daataa sabad sunaa-ay.
To whom the beneficent true Guru recites his divine word.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
Dhaavat raakhai thaak rahaa-ay.
He controls and stops his wandering mind from running after worldly wealth.
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
pooray gur tay sojhee paa-ay. ||7||
From the perfect Guru, he understands the righteous way of living.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ) ਸਮਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
aapay kartaa sarisat siraj jin go-ee.
The Creator Himself has created the universe; He Himself shall destroy it also.
ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਨੇ ਖੁਦ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਸਾਜੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
tis bin doojaa avar na ko-ee.
There is no one else beside Him.
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੮॥੬॥
naanak gurmukh boojhai ko-ee. ||8||6||
O’ Nanak, only a rare Guru’s follower, understands this concept.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ (ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਭੇਦ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ l

Raag Gauree, by the Third Guru:
ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
naam amolak gurmukh paavai.
A Guru’s follower obtains the invaluable gift of God’s Name from the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਮੁੱਲਾ ਨਾਮ, ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੋ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
naamo sayvay naam sahj samaavai.
He always remember God’s Name with love and devotion, and through Naam he merges in a state of equipoise.
ਉਹ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
amrit naam rasnaa nit gaavai.
He recites the Ambrosial Naam each and every day.
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ, ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
jis no kirpaa karay so har ras paavai. ||1||
Only the one upon whom God bestows His mercy, relishes the elixir of Naam.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਪਉ ਜਗਦੀਸਾ ॥
an-din hirdai japa-o jagdeesaa.
I always remember God, The Master of Universe, with love and devotion.
ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਸੂਖਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh paava-o param pad sookhaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By following Guru’s teachings I have obtained the supreme spiritual state.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸੂਖੁ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
hirdai sookh bha-i-aa pargaas.
The minds of those, are illuminated and remain in spiritual bliss,
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚਾਨਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
gurmukh gaavahi sach guntaas.
-who follow the Guru’s teachings and keep singing the praises of God, the treasure of virtues.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥
daasan daas nit hoveh daas.
They always remain extremely humble, ( the servant of the servants of God)
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
garih kutamb meh sadaa udaas. ||2||
And even while taking care of their households and families, they remain detached from worldly affairs.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ, ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥
jeevan mukat gurmukh ko ho-ee.
It is only a very rare Guru’s follower who, while living the ordinary life of a householder, is free from worldly bonds and vices.
ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਪਰਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
param padaarath paavai so-ee.
Only such a detached person obtains the supreme wealth of God’s Name.
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
tarai gun maytay nirmal ho-ee.
Eradicating the three impulses of vice, virtue and power) such a person becomes immaculate,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਮਿਟਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਆਤਮਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
sehjay saach milai parabh so-ee. ||3||
-and intuitively gets united with the eternal God.
ਉਹ ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ, ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
moh kutamb si-o pareet na ho-ay.
Emotional attachment to family does not remain,
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹ) ਮੋਹ-ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ,
ਜਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
jaa hirdai vasi-aa sach so-ay.
when the eternal God dwells within the heart.
ਜਦ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gurmukh man bayDhi-aa asthir ho-ay
totally imbued with love of God, becomes steady.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਵਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
hukam pachhaanai boojhai sach so-ay. ||4||
Such a person then recognizes the God’s Will and realizes the eternal God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ.
ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
tooN kartaa mai avar na ko-ay.
O’ God, You are the creator and I do not depend on anyone else besides You.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ,
ਤੁਝੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
tujh sayvee tujh tay pat ho-ay.
I only remember You with love and devotion and obtain honor through You.
ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਗਾਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
kirpaa karahi gaavaa parabh so-ay.
If You show your mercy, then only I can sing Your praises.
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇਂ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥੫॥
naam ratan sabh jag meh lo-ay. ||5||
Jewel-like Name of God spiritually illuminates the entire world.
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਚਾਨਣ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
gurmukh banee meethee laagee.
The Guru’s follower, whom the Bani (divine Words) seems so sweet.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
antar bigsai an-din liv laagee.
-his heart is delighted with happiness. and his mind always remains lovingly attuned to God.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਖਿੜ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ॥
sehjay sach mili-aa parsaadee.
By Guru’s grace, he is intuitively united with the eternal God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੬॥
satgur paa-i-aa poorai vadbhaagee. ||6||
The True Guru is obtained by the destiny of perfect good fortune.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪੂਰੇ ਭਾਗ ਨਾਲ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੁਖ ਨਾਸੁ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa durmat dukh naas.
Egotism, possessiveness, evil-mindedness and suffering depart,
ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ, ਅਪਣੱਤ ਦਾ, ਖੋਟੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਦਾ, ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
jab hirdai raam naam guntaas.
when God’s Name, the Ocean of Virtue, comes to dwell within the heart.
ਜਦੋਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਸੁ ॥
gurmukh buDh pargatee parabh jaas.
By listening to God’s praises the intellect of the Guru’s follower is awakened,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਉਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਉੱਜਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਵਿਆ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੭॥
jab hirdai ravi-aa charan nivaas. ||7||
When he meditates on God’s Name and attunes his intellect to His Lotus feet.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jis naam day-ay so-ee jan paa-ay.
The devotee only obtains His Name when God Himself blesses it
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
gurmukh maylay aap gavaa-ay.
God arranges for that devotee to meet the Guru, who then destroys his own ego.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
hirdai saachaa naam vasaa-ay.
That person enshrines the true Name of God in his heart.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੮॥੭॥
naanak sehjay saach samaa-ay. ||8||7||
O Nanak, such a person intuitively merges in the eternal God.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l

Raag Gauree, by the Third Guru:
ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਭੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
man hee man savaari-aa bhai sahj subhaa-ay.
The one who has intuitively reformed his mind through the revered fear of God.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ,
