ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਵੈ ॥
ha-umai banDhan banDh bhavaavai.
Ego ties a person in bonds, and makes him wander in cycles of birth and death.
ਹਉਮੈ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧੩॥
naanak raam bhagat sukh paavai. ||8||13||
O’ Nanak, peace is attained through devotional worship of God. ||8||13||.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧੩॥

Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਕਾਲੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
parathmay barahmaa kaalai ghar aa-i-aa.
First of all it was god Brahma who faced the spiritual death.
ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਵਸ ਪਿਆ ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਇਆਲਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
barahm kamal pa-i-aal na paa-i-aa.
Brahma searched the nether regions but failed in his pursuit to find the limit of the Creator and faced spiritual degradation due to his ego.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਕੰਵਲ ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇਅੰਤ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਨਾਂ ਲੱਗਾ।(
ਆਗਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਨੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
aagi-aa nahee leenee bharam bhulaa-i-aa. ||1||
He didn’t care for his Guru’s teachings and was strayed in the illusion of being the creator himself. ||1||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਵਲ ਗਹੁ ਨਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ ॥੧॥
ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲਿ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਆ ॥
jo upjai so kaal sanghaari-aa.
Whoever comes to the word, without meditation on Naam faces spiritual death.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੀਵ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਕਾਲ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ham har raakhay gur sabad beechaari-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God has protected me spiritually, as I contemplate the Guru’s word. ||1||Pause|.
ਮੇਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੇ ਦੇਵੀ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
maa-i-aa mohay dayvee sabh dayvaa.
All the gods and goddesses are enticed by Maya.
ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇਵੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ l
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
kaal na chhodai bin gur kee sayvaa.
The fear of death does not spare anyone without medication on Naam.
ਇਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀ।
ਓਹੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੨॥
oh abhinaasee alakh abhayvaa. ||2||
God alone is immortal, infinite, and incomprehensible. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਮਰ, ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਅਭੇਦ ਹੈ।॥੨॥
ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਨਾ ॥
sultaan khaan baadisaah nahee rahnaa.
The sultans, the chiefs and the emperors shall not remain forever in this world.
ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਹੋਣ, ਖ਼ਾਨ ਹੋਣ, ਬਾਦਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੋਣ, ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿਣਾ,
ਨਾਮਹੁ ਭੂਲੈ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਨਾ ॥
naamhu bhoolai jam kaa dukh sahnaa.
Whoever forget God’s Name endures the pain of the fear of death.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਖੁੰਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜਮ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮੈ ਧਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹਨਾ ॥੩॥
mai Dhar naam ji-o raakho rahnaa. ||3||
My only Strength is Naam and I live as You keep me. ||3||
ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਂ ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ॥
cha-uDhree raajay nahee kisai mukaam.
Neither the kings nor the leaders have a permanent abode here.
ਚਉਧਰੀ ਹੋਣ, ਰਾਜੇ ਹੋਣ, ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਭੀ ਇਥੇ ਪੱਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਹ ਮਰਹਿ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਮ ॥
saah mareh saNcheh maa-i-aa daam.
The bankers who just accumulate worldly wealth are spiritually dead,
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨਿਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਜੋੜਦੇ ਹਨ ਨਿਰੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੪॥
mai Dhan deejai har amrit naam. ||4||
therefor, O’ God, grant me the wealth of Your Ambrosial Naam. ||4||.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ॥੪॥
ਰਯਤਿ ਮਹਰ ਮੁਕਦਮ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੈ ॥
ra-yat mahar mukdam sikdaarai.
The people, the rulers, the leaders and the chiefs,
ਪਰਜਾ, ਪਰਜਾ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀਏ, ਚੌਧਰੀ, ਸਰਦਾਰ-
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਦਿਸੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
nihchal ko-ay na disai sansaarai.
none of them shall be able to remain in the world forever.
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਐਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਜੋ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੇ।
ਅਫਰਿਉ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੈ ॥੫॥
afri-o kaal koorh sir maarai. ||5||
One in love with Maya is repeatidly struck down by the inevitable death. ||5||
ਬਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਚੋਟ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
nihchal ayk sachaa sach so-ee.
God alone is eternal.
ਸਦਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕੋ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਸਭ ਗੋਈ ॥
jin kar saajee tineh sabh go-ee.
He, who has created and adorned this world will merge it back into Himself.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਰਚੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਲੈ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਓਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਤਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
oh gurmukh jaapai taaN pat ho-ee. ||6||
One who through the Guru realizes God is honored in His court. ||6||
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਏ ਤਦੋਂ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ) ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਕਾਜੀ ਸੇਖ ਭੇਖ ਫਕੀਰਾ ॥
kaajee saykh bhaykh fakeeraa.
Even those qazis, sheikhs and fakirs in religious robes (Islamic leaders),
ਕਾਜ਼ੀ , ਸ਼ੇਖ , ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭੇਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ,
ਵਡੇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਪੀਰਾ ॥
vaday kahaaveh ha-umai tan peeraa.
declare themselves as great but they all suffer in the pain of ego.
(ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਅਖਵਾਣ; ਪਰ ਜੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੭॥
kaal na chhodai bin satgur kee Dheeraa. ||7||
Without the support of Naam blessed by the true Guru, spiritual death does not spare even them. ||7||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲੇ ਨਾਮ- ਆਧਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਛਡਦੀ।॥੭॥
ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਅਰੁ ਨੈਣੀ ॥ ਕਾਨੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੈਣੀ ॥
kaal jaal jihvaa ar nainee. kaanee kaal sunai bikh bainee.
Maya lays its trap for spiritual death through the eyes, the tongue and ears when one sees something with evil intent, speaks ill and listen to slander of others.
ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਜਾਲ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਅੱਖਾਂ (ਪਰਾਇਆ ਰੂਪ ਤੱਕਣ ), ਜੀਭ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਨਾਂ (ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਾਰਨ) ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਤਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ))
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥
bin sabdai moothay din rainee. ||8||
Without the support of the Guru’s word, day and night people are being cheated out of spiritual virtues. ||8||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਲੁੱਟੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੮॥
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹਿ ਸਕੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥
hirdai saach vasai har naa-ay. kaal na johi sakai gun gaa-ay.
Fear of death cannot torment the one in whose heart dwells the Name of the eternal God and who sings His praises.
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,ਤੇ ਜੋ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਉਸ ਵਲ ਕਦੇ ਤੱਕ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੯॥੧੪॥
naanak gurmukh sabad samaa-ay. ||9||14||
O’ Nanak, following the Guru’s word, such a person merges in Naam. ||9||14||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ) ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥੧੪॥

ga-orhee mehlaa 1.
Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਬੋਲਹਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਈ ॥
boleh saach mithi-aa nahee raa-ee.
Those who always speak the truth without a tinge of falsehood.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੋਲ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਝੂਠ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲਦੇ l
ਚਾਲਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
chaaleh gurmukh hukam rajaa-ee.
Such Guru’s followers live according to God’s will.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਰਹਹਿ ਅਤੀਤ ਸਚੇ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੧॥
raheh ateet sachay sarnaa-ee. ||1||
While remaining detached (from worldly affairs), they always remain in the refuge of the eternal God.||1||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਸਚ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ॥
sach ghar baisai kaal na johai.
The fear of death does not torment the one who remains attuned to God .
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
manmukh ka-o aavat jaavat dukh mohai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But an egocentric, because of love for Maya, keeps suffering in the cycles of birth and death.||1||pause||
ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ (ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਣ) ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ (ਦਬਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ) ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਅਉ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
api-o pee-a-o akath kath rahee-ai.
Partake the ambrosial nectar of Naam and sing the praises of the indescribable God.
ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ ਅਤੇ ਅਕਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
nij ghar bais sahj ghar lahee-ai.
You shall find intuitive peace within your own heart.
ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਧਾਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ, ਪਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ
ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਇਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੨॥
har ras maatay ih sukh kahee-ai. ||2||
Being engrossed in the elixir of God’s Name one can describe the experience this peace. ||2||
ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਇਹ ਕਹਿ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਸਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਾਲ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਨਹੀ ਡੋਲੈ ॥
gurmat chaal nihchal nahee dolai.
The way of life based on the Guru’s teachings is so stable that the onslaught of Maya cannot shake it.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਐਸੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹਿਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੈ ॥
gurmat saach sahj har bolai.
Following the Guru’s Teachings, one intuitively recites the Name of God.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਹ ਸੁਭਾਵਕ ਹੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਪੀਵੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਤੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੈ ॥੩॥
peevai amrit tat virolai. ||3||
He partakes the nectar of Naam and recognizes the essential reality.||3||
ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਰੋਲ ਕੇ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੀਨੀ ॥
satgur daykhi-aa deekhi-aa leenee.
Beholding the true Guru one who receives his teachings,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਪੂਰੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਹਣ ਕਰ ਲਈ,
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿਓ ਅੰਤਰ ਗਤਿ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
man tan arpi-o antar gat keenee.
enshrines that teaching in his mind and surrenders himself to the Guru.
ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਵਸਾ ਲਈ ਤੇ (ਉਸ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਭੇਟ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੀ ॥੪॥
gat mit paa-ee aatam cheenee. ||4||
By recognized the self he understood the worth of salvation |4||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਗਈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਵਡਾਈ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
bhojan naam niranjan saar.
One who deems God’s Name as the essence of spiritual food.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ) ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
param hans sach jot apaar.
He is immaculate, like a pedigreed swan because in his heart is the light of the infinite God.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਚਮਕ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
jah daykh-a-u tah aykankaar. ||5||
Wherever he looks, there he beholds the one God. ||5||
ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਪਾਸੇ ਉਹ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਏ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਏਕਾ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
rahai niraalam aykaa sach karnee.
He remains detached from Maya and always meditaties on God.
ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ) ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ॥
param pad paa-i-aa sayvaa gur charnee.
By humbly following the Guru’s teachings he attains supreme spiritual status.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਚੂਕੀ ਅਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਮਣੀ ॥੬॥
man tay man maani-aa chookee ahaN bharmanee. ||6||
His mind gets convinced and his wandering motivated by ego ends. ||6||
ਅੰਦਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਉਮੈ ਵਾਲੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
in biDh ka-un ka-un nahee taari-aa.
By following this way of the Guru, who has not been saved?
(“ਸਚ ਘਰ” ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ) ਇਸ ਵਿਧੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਸ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘਾਇਆ?
ਹਰਿ ਜਸਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥
har jas sant bhagat nistaari-aa.
God’s praise has always helped His saints and devotees to swim across the worldly ocean of vices.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
