ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਏ ਹਮ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਰਿਆ ॥੭॥
parabh paa-ay ham avar na bhaari-aa. ||7||
I have also realized God and I am not looking for anyone else. ||7||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਾਲਦਾ ॥੭॥
ਸਾਚ ਮਹਲਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥
saach mahal gur alakh lakhaa-i-aa.
Whom the Guru has revealed the incomprehensible God within his heart,
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਅਲੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਹਚਲ ਮਹਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
nihchal mahal nahee chaha-i-aa maa-i-aa.
he has attained such a state of mind where Maya has no effect at all.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਅਚੱਲ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ।
ਸਾਚਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
saach santokhay bharam chukaa-i-aa. ||8||
The doubt of those is dispelled who attain contentment by attuning to God. ||8||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੱਜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
jin kai man vasi-aa sach so-ee.
Those in whose heart dwells the eternal God,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
tin kee sangat gurmukh ho-ee.
in their association one becomes a Guru’s follower.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਈ ॥੯॥੧੫॥
naanak saach naam mal kho-ee. ||9||15||
O’ Nanak, that person gets rid of the dirt of vices by meditating on the Name of the eternal God. ||9||15||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥੧੫॥

ga-orhee mehlaa 1.
Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਰਾਮਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਰਾਪੈ ਜਾ ਕਾ ॥
raam naam chit raapai jaa kaa.
One whose consciousness is imbued with the love of God’s Name.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ (-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਉਪਜੰਪਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਤਾ ਕਾ ॥੧॥
upjamp darsan keejai taa kaa. ||1||
We should see the sight of that holy person at early dawn. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਿੱਤ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉਠਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਭਾਗੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥
raam na japahu abhaag tumaaraa.
If you do not meditate on God’s Name, it is your misfortune.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜੇ) ਤੁਸੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ, ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਬਦ-ਕਿਸਮਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jug jug daataa parabh raam hamaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Our Master-God has been bestowing gifts on us for ages upon ages. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਚਲਾ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
gurmat raam japai jan pooraa.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings and meditates on God, becomes a perfect devotee of God.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ)।
ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਅਨਹਤ ਬਾਜੇ ਤੂਰਾ ॥੨॥
tit ghat anhat baajay tooraa. ||2||
He is always delighted as if continuous divine melody is playing in his heart. ||2||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੜਾਉ ਹੀ ਖਿੜਾਉ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਨੋ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਤੁਰਮਾਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਜੋ ਜਨ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
jo jan raam bhagat har pi-aar.
The devotees who worships God with loving devotion,
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜਦੇ) ਹਨ,
ਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
say parabh raakhay kirpaa Dhaar. ||3||
showering His mercy, God saves them from the ego and vices. ||3||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਹਉਮੈ ਆਦਿਕ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
jin kai hirdai har har so-ee.
In whose heart dwells God,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ (ਦਇਆ-ਨਿਧਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
tin kaa daras paras sukh ho-ee. ||4||
peace is attained by beholding the sight of those devotees. ||4||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਵੈ ॥
sarab jee-aa meh ayko ravai.
The same God is pervading within all beings,
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਭਵੈ ॥੫॥
manmukh ahaNkaaree fir joonee bhavai. ||5||
but the self-willed person acts egotistically and wanders in various births. ||5||
ਪਰ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ , ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ-ਭਰਿਆ ਵਰਤਾਉ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
so boojhai jo satgur paa-ay.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings understands that same God dwells in all.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥
ha-umai maaray gur sabday paa-ay. ||6||
Subduing his ego, through the Guru’s word he realizes God. ||6||
ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਕੀ ਸੰਧਿ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
araDh uraDh kee sanDh ki-o jaanai.
Without devotional worship, how can anyone understand the Union between the human soul and the Supreme soul?
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਜੀਵਾਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੭॥
gurmukh sanDh milai man maanai. ||7||
Only that Guru’s follower whose mind firmly believes in meditation on Naam attains this union. ||7||
(ਉਹੀ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ) ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਰੀਐ ॥
ham paapee nirgun ka-o gun karee-ai.
O’ God, we are sinners without any virtues; please bless us with such virtues so that we can meditate on Naam.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਹਾਂ, ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ (ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ) ਗੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼।
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਤਰੀਐ ॥੮॥੧੬॥
parabh ho-ay da-i-aal naanak jan taree-ai. ||8||16||
O’ Nanak, when God shows His mercy and blesses with Naam, only then His devotees can swim across the worldly ocean of vices. ||8||16||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤਦੋਂ ਦਾਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ- ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੮॥੧੬॥
ਸੋਲਹ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਗਉੜੀ ਕੀਆ ॥
solah asatpadee-aa gu-aarayree ga-orhee kee-aa.
This is the end of sixteen ashtapadis of First Guru in Raag Gwaarayree Gauree.

Raag Gauree Bairaagan, First Guru:
ਰਾਗ ਗਉੜੀ-ਬੇਰਾਗਣਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ।
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God. Realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਗਾਈ ਕਉ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਰਾ ॥
ji-o gaa-ee ka-o go-ilee raakhahi kar saaraa.
Just as the dairy farmer watches over and protects his cows,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਆਲਾ ਗਾਈਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪਾਲਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹਿ ਆਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
ahinis paaleh raakh layhi aatam sukh Dhaaraa. ||1||
similarly, God always cherishes us, protects us from evils and blesses us with spiritual peace. ||1||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਲਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ, ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
it ut raakho deen da-i-aalaa.
O’ God, merciful Master of the meek, protect me here and hereafter.
ਹੇ ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਤਉ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ta-o sarnaagat nadar nihaalaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I seek Your refuge, please bless me with Your glance of grace. ||1||Pause||
(ਮੈਂ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਲ) ਵੇਖ! ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਰਖੁ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
jah daykh-a-u tah rav rahay rakh raakhanhaaraa.
O’ God, the savior, wherever I look, I see You pervading there; please save me.
ਹੇ ਰੱਖਣਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਜਿਧਰ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਤੂੰ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ,ਮੇਰੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰ ।
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
tooN daataa bhugtaa tooNhai tooN paraan aDhaaraa. ||2||
You are the benefactor and also the enjoyer, You are the support of our life. |2|
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਭੋਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੨॥
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਅਧ ਊਰਧੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
kirat pa-i-aa aDh oorDhee bin gi-aan beechaaraa.
Without contemplating spiritual wisdom, one keeps wandering in high and low states of mind (pleasure and sorrow) as per preordained destiny.
ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮ-ਗਿਆਤ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਣ ਦੇ ਬਗ਼ੈਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ, ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਡਿਗਦਾ ਜਾਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਕਦੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖੀ)
ਬਿਨੁ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin upmaa jagdees kee binsai na anDhi-aaraa. ||3||
Without singing praises of God, the darkness of ignorance is not dispelled. |3|
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਮਿਟਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੩॥
ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਲੋਭੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
jag binsat ham daykhi-aa lobhay ahaNkaaraa.
I have seen the humanity being spiritually destroyed by greed and egotism.
ਨਿੱਤ ਦੇਖੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
gur sayvaa parabh paa-i-aa sach mukat du-aaraa. ||4||
By meditating on Naam through the Guru’s teaching, God is realized and freedom from the vices is attained. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ (ਲੋਭ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਅਪਾਰ ਕੋ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
nij ghar mahal apaar ko aprampar so-ee.
The palace of that limitless God is in our own hearts, and He also is farther than the farthest.
ਅਨੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ-ਦਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥
bin sabdai thir ko nahee boojhai sukh ho-ee. ||5||
Without reflecting on the Guru’s word no one can remain permanently attuned to God. Peace is attained only by following the Guru’s teachings. ||5||
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਉਸ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ) ਸਦਾ-ਟਿਕਵਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਜਮ ਜਾਲਾ ॥
ki-aa lai aa-i-aa lay jaa-ay ki-aa faaseh jam jaalaa.
O’ mortal, what did you bring to this world and what are you going to take with you? Why are you getting caught in the noose of spiritual death?
ਹੇ ਜੀਵ! ਨਾਹ ਤੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਇਆ ਸੀ, ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ (ਇਥੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਲ-ਧਨ) ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਵੇਂਗਾ। (ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਜਮ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਡੋਲੁ ਬਧਾ ਕਸਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਪਤਾਲਾ ॥੬॥
dol baDhaa kas jayvree aakaas pataalaa. ||6||
As a bucket tied to a rope is sometimes lowered into the well and sometimes pulled up, similarly, at times you are in high spirits and at times in low spirits. |6|
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੱਸੀ ਨਾਲ ਬੱਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਡੋਲ ਕਦੇ ਖੂਹ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਦੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
gurmat naam na veesrai sehjay pat paa-ee-ai.
If we do not forsake Naam then by following the Guru’s teachings intuitively we receive honor in God’s court.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਹ ਭੁੱਲੇ, ਤਾਂ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
antar sabad niDhaan hai mil aap gavaa-ee-ai. ||7||
Everyone has the wealth of Naam in their heart but it is attained only by eradicating self-conceit. ||7||
ਹਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਰੂਪ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਇਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਣੀ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
nadar karay parabh aapnee gun ank samaavai.
The person on whom God casts His merciful glance by blessing with virtues, He merges that person in His embrace.
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਅੰਕ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧॥੧੭॥
naanak mayl na chook-ee laahaa sach paavai. ||8||1||17||
O’ Nanak, this union is never dissolved and in this way one earns the profit of Naam by meditating on the eternal God. ||8||1|||17||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਿਆ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਕਦੇ ਟੁੱਟਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧॥੧੭॥
