ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
par ghar cheet manmukh dolaa-ay.
A self conceited person’s mind craves for another’s wealth,
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਡੁਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
gal jayvree DhanDhai laptaa-ay.
thus he is actually trapping himself in the web of vices.
(ਨਤੀਜਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜੰਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਫਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ (ਪੱਕੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh chhootas har gun gaa-ay. ||5||
But the Guru’s follower escapes from all such entanglements by singing God’s praises. ||5||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥
Jio Than Bidhhavaa Par Ko Dhaeee. ||
just as an unchaste woman uses her body with a stranger,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਿਧਵਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਰਾਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥
kaam daam chit par vas say-ee.
she even allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money.
ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਪੈਸੇ (ਦੇ ਲਾਲਚ) ਵਿਚ (ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ (ਭੀ) ਪਰਾਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
bin pir taripat na kabahooN ho-ee. ||6||
But without a legitimate husband, she is never fully satisfied. (Similarly, forsaking Husband-God a soul bride indulges in vices and never attains spiritual peace). |6|
ਪਰ ਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੀ ਭੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ) ॥੬॥
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥
parh parh pothee simrit paathaa.
One may read the religious books and recite the simiritis.
ਜੀਵ ਧਰਮ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਠ; ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥
bayd puraan parhai sun thaataa.
He may read and listen Vedas and Puranas and other compilations,
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਵਿ- ਰਚਨਾ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥
bin ras raatay man baho naataa. ||7||
but without being imbued with elixir of Naam, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7||
ਪਰ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਦਾ ਰਸੀਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦਾ, ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਹੀ) ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
ji-o chaatrik jal paraym pi-aasaa.
As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਪੀਹੇ ਦਾ (ਵਰਖਾ-) ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਹੈ, (ਵਰਖਾ-) ਜਲ ਦੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਸ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥
ji-o meenaa jal maahi ulaasaa.
and as the fish delights in the water,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
naanak har ras pee tariptaasaa. ||8||11||
similarly, O’ Nanak, a devotee of God feels satiated by partaking the nectar of God’s Name. ||8||11||
ਤਿਵੇਂ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧੧॥

ga-orhee mehlaa 1.
Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
hath kar marai na laykhai paavai.
Evan if one dies while performing torturous yoga exercises and austerities, shall not be approved in God’s court.
(ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਹਠ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਧੂਣੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਤਪਾ ਕੇ) ਸਰੀਰਕ ਔਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਵੇਸ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
vays karai baho bhasam lagaavai.
One may wear religious robes and smear his body all over with ashes.
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪਿੰਡੇ ਉਤੇ) ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਜੋਗ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੇ) ਕਈ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਭੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ)।
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
naam bisaar bahur pachhutaavai. ||1||
Forsaking Naam, he comes to regret and repent in the end. ||1||
ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਖ ॥
tooN man har jee-o tooN man sookh.
Enshrine God in your mind and enjoy the bliss.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਸਾ ਲੈ, (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਸਹਹਿ ਜਮ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam bisaar saheh jam dookh. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By forsaking Naam, you would endure the fear and pain of death. ||1||Pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਜਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰੇਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਅਗਰ ਕਪੂਰਿ ॥
cho-aa chandan agar kapoor.
One indulged in worldly pleasures,
ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਅਤਰ ਚੰਦਨ ਅਗਰ ਕਪੂਰ (ਆਦਿਕ ਸੁਗੰਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਰਤਣ) ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੈ,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
maa-i-aa magan param pad door.
and engrossed in Maya is far away from the supreme spiritual state.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ (ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ) ਦੂਰ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
naam bisaari-ai sabh koorho koor. ||2||
If one forgets Naam all else is false and vain.||2||
ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਦੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਤਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
nayjay vaajay takhat salaam.
The lances, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others,
(ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਭੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਏ) ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉਤੇ (ਬੈਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ) ਨੇਜ਼ਾ-ਬਰਦਾਰ ਤੇ ਫ਼ੌਜੀ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਨ,
ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥
aDhkee tarisnaa vi-aapai kaam.
only accentuate the yearning for worldly wealth and lust.
ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਹੀ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
bin har jaachay bhagat na naam. ||3||
Without seeking God, neither devotional worship nor Naam are attained. ||3||
ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਮੰਗਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਹ ਭਗਤੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਵਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ ॥
vaad ahaNkaar naahee parabh maylaa.
Union with God is not attained by scholarly arguments and egotism.
ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਬਲ ਨਾਲ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਚਾ ਦੇ ਝਗੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
man day paavahi naam suhaylaa.
It is only by surrendering the mind to God one receives the blissful Naam.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ (ਹੀ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਹੀ) ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ।
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥
doojai bhaa-ay agi-aan duhaylaa. ||4||
The love of duality leads only to ignorance and misery.||4||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਹੀ (ਵਧੇਗਾ) ॥੪॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕੇ ਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ ॥
bin dam kay sa-udaa nahee haat.
Just as one cannot buy anything from a shop without money,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਸੌਦਾ-ਸੂਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ ॥
bin bohith saagar nahee vaat.
and just as one cannot cross the ocean without a ship,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੫॥
bin gur sayvay ghaatay ghaat. ||5||
similarly without following the Guru’s teachings there is total loss of spiritual wealth (and the aim of life is not achieved). ||5||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਵਲੋਂ) ਘਾਟੇ ਹੀ ਘਾਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਰਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je vaat dikhaavai.
Applaud the Guru again and again who shows the righteous way of life.
ਉਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਆਖ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je sabad sunaavai.
Eulogize him again and again who recites the divine word (to you).
ਉਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਆਖ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je mayl milaavai. ||6||
Yes, blessed is the Guru who unites us with God.||6||
ਤੇ (ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਉਸ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਆਖ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
vaahu vaahu tis ka-o jis kaa ih jee-o.
O’ my friend, highly applaud God who blessed us this life.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ (ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥
gur sabdee math amrit pee-o.
Contemplate on the Guru’s word and partake the ambrosial nectar of Naam.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀ।
ਨਾਮ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੀਉ ॥੭॥
naam vadaa-ee tuDh bhaanai dee-o. ||7||
Whenever He so wills, He would bless you with the glory of Naam.||7||
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ ॥੭॥
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਇ ॥
naam binaa ki-o jeevaa maa-ay.
O’ my mother, how can I spiritually survive without meditating on Naam?
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਜਿਊ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤੁ ਰਹਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥
an-din japat raha-o tayree sarnaa-ay.
O’ God, I have come in Your refuge, bless me so that I always remain meditating on Naam.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ, (ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ) ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੨॥
naanak naam ratay pat paa-ay. ||8||12||
O’ Nanak, by remaining imbued with the love of Naam honor is attained both here and hereafter. ||8||12||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧੨॥

Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
ha-umai karat bhaykhee nahee jaani-aa.
Acting in ego, no one has ever realized God even by wearing religious garbs.
“ਮੈਂ ਮੈਂ” ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਨਿਰੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਭੇਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
gurmukh bhagat virlay man maani-aa. ||1||
Rare is the Guru’s follower, whose mind is satiated with devotional worship. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਗਿੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਤਿਆਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
ha-o ha-o karat nahee sach paa-ee-ai.
The eternal God is not realized by indulging in self-conceit.
ਮੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ (ਕਦੇ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-umai jaa-ay param pad paa-ee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
When self-conceit departs the supreme spiritual status is attained. ||1||pause||
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੇ ਦੂਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
ha-umai kar raajay baho Dhaaveh.
To satisfy their ego, kings and rulers attack other nations.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦੇ ਦੇਸਾਂ ਉਤੇ, ਕਈ ਵਾਰੀ ਹੱਲੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥
ha-umai khapeh janam mar aavahi. ||2||
Consumed by their ego they keep suffering in the cycles of birth and death. ||2||
ਆਪਣੇ ਵਡੱਪਣ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ , ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
ha-umai nivrai gur sabad veechaarai.
One who reflects on the Guru’s word dispels his ego.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
chanchal mat ti-aagai panch sanghaarai. ||3||
He controls his mercurial intellect and stills the five evil passions ||3||
ਉਹ (ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਆਪਣੀ) ਹੋਛੀ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
antar saach sahj ghar aavahi.
Those within whom dwells the eternal God enjoy intuitive peace.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਵੱਸਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਅਡੋਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥
raajan jaan param gat paavahi. ||4||
By realizing the sovereign God they attain the supreme spiritual status. ||4||
ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
sach karnee gur bharam chukhaavai.
One whose doubts are dispelled by the Guru, meditation on Naam becomes his daily intuitive deed,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਿੱਤ-ਕਰਮ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
nirbha-o kai ghar taarhee laavai. ||5||
and remains attuned to the fearless God. ||5||
ਉਹ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
ha-o ha-o kar marnaa ki-aa paavai.
Other than spiritual deterioration, what does one gain by indulging in ego?
ਹਉਂ, ਹਉਂ; ਮੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੀ ਸਹੇੜੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਟ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ।
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
pooraa gur bhaytay so jhagar chukhaavai. ||6||
One who follows the teachings of the Perfect Guru is rid of all conflicts. ||6||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਟੰਟੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jaytee hai taytee kihu naahee.
Wandering around to satiate one’s ego does not yield any spiritual gain.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਜਿਤਨੀ ਭੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕੋਈ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁਚਾਂਦੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
gurmukh gi-aan bhayt gun gaahee. ||7||
By obtaining spiritual wisdom from the Guru, the Guru’s followers sing the praises of God. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ) ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
