ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay dait sanghaaray.
Because of the love of duality, God destroys the demons,
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
gurmukh saach bhagat nistaaray. ||8||
and ferries the Guru’s followers across the world-ocean of vices by yoking them to His devotional worship. ||8||
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਬੂਡਾ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
boodaa durjoDhan pat kho-ee.
Drowned in ego, Duryodhan lost his honor.
ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬਿਆ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਬੈਠਾ।
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥
raam na jaani-aa kartaa so-ee.
He did not remember the creator God.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖਿਆ
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੯॥
jan ka-o dookh pachai dukh ho-ee. ||9||
One who makes God’s humble devotee suffer, shall himself suffer and rot. ||9||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ॥੯॥
ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
janmayjai gur sabad na jaani-aa.
King Janmeja did not care for his Guru’s teachings.
ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ (ਆਪਣੇ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥
ki-o sukh paavai bharam bhulaani-aa.
Deluded by doubt, how could he find peace?
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਭੁਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ, ਫਿਰ ਸੁਖ ਕਿਥੋਂ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁ?
ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੦॥
ik til bhoolay bahur pachhutaani-aa. ||10||
Making a mistake even for an instant, he suffered and repented later on. ||10||
(ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਕੋੜ੍ਹ ਦੀ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਪਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਣ ਦਾ ਉੱਦਮ ਕੀਤਾ, ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਥੋੜਾ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਖੁੰਝ ਗਿਆ, ਤੇ ਮੁੜ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
ਕੰਸੁ ਕੇਸੁ ਚਾਂਡੂਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
kans kays chaaNdoor na ko-ee.
Kansa the King and his warriors Kays and Chandoor had no equals.
ਕੰਸ, ਕੇਸੀ, ਤੇ ਚਾਂਡੂਰ (ਬੜੇ ਬੜੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਸਨ, ਸੂਰਮਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ) ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
raam na cheeni-aa apnee pat kho-ee.
Without understanding God’s way, they lost their honor.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਲੀਲਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲਈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੧॥
bin jagdees na raakhai ko-ee. ||11||
Except the Creator, none can protect anybody|11||
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ) ਰੱਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin gur garab na mayti-aa jaa-ay.
Ego cannot be erased without the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨੂੰ (ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
gurmat Dharam Dheeraj har naa-ay.
Righteousness, contentment and God’s Name are attained by following the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਈਮਾਨ, ਤਸੱਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੧੨॥੯॥
naanak naam milai gun gaa-ay. ||12||9||
O’ Nanak, Naam is received by singing the praises of God. ||12||9||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥੯॥

ga-orhee mehlaa 1.
Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਅੰਕਿ ਚੜਾਵਉ ॥
cho-aa chandan ank charhaava-o.
Even if I anoint my body with sandal scent (perfumes),
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਅਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਦਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੇ ਲਾ ਲਵਾਂ,
ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹਢਾਵਉ ॥
paat patambar pahir hadhaava-o.
and wear silken and costly clothes,
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਰੇਸ਼ਮ ਰੇਸ਼ਮੀ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਹੰਢਾਵਾਂ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥
bin har naam kahaa sukh paava-o. ||1||
still without God’s Name, I would not attain peace anywhere.||1||
(ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੁੰਞਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਕਿਆ ਪਹਿਰਉ ਕਿਆ ਓਢਿ ਦਿਖਾਵਉ ॥
ki-aa pahira-o ki-aa odh dikhaava-o.
It doesn’t matter what I wear to please myself or to display to others.
ਵਧੀਆ ਵਧੀਆ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਤੇ ਪਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾਲਣ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ?
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin jagdees kahaa sukh paava-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without meditating on God I would not attain peace. ||1||pause||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੁਖ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਾਨੀ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਗਲਿ ਮੋਤੀਅਨ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ॥
kaanee kundal gal motee-an kee maalaa.
I may wear earrings and a pearl necklace around my neck;
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਪਾ ਲਵਾਂ, ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮੋਤੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਪਾ ਲਵਾਂ,
ਲਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਫੂਲ ਗੁਲਾਲਾ ॥
laal nihaalee fool gulaalaa.
my bed may be adorned with red blanket and rose petals,
ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਲ ਰੰਗ ਦੀ ਤੁਲਾਈ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਲਾਲ ਫੁੱਲ (ਖਿਲਰੇ ਹੋਏ) ਹੋਣ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
bin jagdees kahaa sukh bhaalaa. ||2||
still without meditation on God I would not attain peace anywhere.||2||
(ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਨੈਨ ਸਲੋਨੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
nain salonee sundar naaree.
Even if I have a beautiful lady with fascinating eyes,
ਜੇ ਸੋਹਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਖੋੜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਰੈ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
khorh seegaar karai at pi-aaree.
she may decorate herself with many kinds of adornments and make herself appear gorgeous,
ਉਹ ਸੋਲਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਾਰ-ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੋਵੇ;
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਭਜੇ ਨਿਤ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੩॥
bin jagdees bhajay nit khu-aaree. ||3||
still without meditating on God, I would be distressed daily. ||3||
(ਫਿਰ ਭੀ) ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ॥
dar ghar mehlaa sayj sukhaalee.
Even if I live in mansions and palaces with all the comforts of life,
ਜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਾਸ ਵੱਸਣ ਲਈ ਮਹਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਹੋਣ, ਸੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਲੰਘ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਫੂਲ ਬਿਛਾਵੈ ਮਾਲੀ ॥
ahinis fool bichhaavai maalee.
the gardener may decorate these with fresh flowers daily,
ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਲੀ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਫੁੱਲ ਵਿਛਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ॥੪॥
bin har naam so dayh dukhaalee. ||4||
still without remembering God, the body would remain miserable.||4||
ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ॥
haivar gaivar nayjay vaajay.
Even if I own excellent elephants, horses, lances and marching bands,
ਜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਾਸ ਵਧੀਆ ਘੋੜੇ ਵਧੀਆ ਹਾਥੀ ਹੋਣ, ਨੇਜ਼ਾ-ਬਰਦਾਰ ਫ਼ੌਜਾਂ ਹੋਣ, ਫ਼ੌਜੀ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਹੋਣ,
ਲਸਕਰ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਪਾਜੇ ॥
laskar nayb khavaasee paajay.
armies, mace-bearers, royal attendants and ostentatious displays,
ਲਸ਼ਕਰ ਹੋਣ, ਨਾਇਬ ਹੋਣ, ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਨੌਕਰ ਹੋਣ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਝੂਠੇ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ॥੫॥
bin jagdees jhoothay divaajay. ||5||
still without remembering God of the world all these are vain undertakings.||5||
ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ (ਤਾਕਤ ਦੇ) ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੀ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
ਸਿਧੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਉ ॥
siDh kahaava-o riDh siDh bulaava-o.
even if I make people call me a sidha, man of miracles with worldly wealth and supernatural powers at my beck and call;
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਸਾਧੂ ਅਖਵਾ ਲਵਾਂ (ਜਦੋਂ ਚਾਹਾਂ) ਕਰਾਮਾਤੀ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਸ) ਸੱਦ ਸਕਾਂ,
ਤਾਜ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਨਾਵਉ ॥
taaj kulah sir chhatar banaava-o.
I may wear a royal crown and have a canopy over my head,
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਤਾਜ ਦੀ ਟੋਪੀ ਹੋਵੇ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਸ਼ਾਹੀ) ਛਤਰ ਝੁਲਾ ਸਕਾਂ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੬॥
bin jagdees kahaa sach paava-o. ||6||
still without meditating on God I would not find true happiness anywhere. ||6||
ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਤਾਕਤ ਕਿਤੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੬॥
ਖਾਨੁ ਮਲੂਕੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
khaan malook kahaava-o raajaa.
I may be called an chief, a lord or a king;
ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਾਨ ਅਖਵਾ ਲਵਾਂ, ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਕਹਾ ਲਵਾਂ, ਰਾਜਾ ਸਦਵਾ ਲਵਾਂ,
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਹੈ ਪਾਜਾ ॥
abay tabay koorhay hai paajaa.
I may arrogantly command others but all those are false shows of vanity.
ਨੌਕਰਾਂ ਚਾਕਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਝਿੜਕਾਂ ਭੀ ਦੇ ਸਕਾਂ, (ਤਾਕਤ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ) ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸਵਰਸਿ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੭॥
bin gur sabad na savras kaajaa. ||7||
But goal of the human life cannot be achieved without the support of the Guru’s word. ||7||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਸਿਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ॥੭॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa gur sabad visaaree.
I have shed off my ego and emotional attachment through the Guru’s word.
ਹੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਤਾਬੇ ਭੁਲਾ ਛੱਡੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥
gurmat jaani-aa ridai muraaree.
Through the Guru’s teachings, I have realized God in my own heart.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੧੦॥
paranvat naanak saran tumaaree. ||8||10||
O’ God, Nanak prays and seeks Your shelter. |8||10||
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ ॥੮॥੧੦॥

Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਸੇਵਾ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਅਵਰੇ ॥
sayvaa ayk na jaanas avray.
One who meditates on God alone, does not recognize any other equal to Him.
ਜੋ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ (ਭਗਤੀ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ।
ਪਰਪੰਚ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਕਵਰੇ ॥
parpanch bi-aaDh ti-aagai kavray.
He forsakes the worldly pleasures which give rise to many evils).
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਭੋਗਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਕੌੜੇ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
bhaa-ay milai sach saachai sach ray. ||1||
By being imbued with the love of God, such a devotee merges in the eternal God and becomes the embodiment of that eternal God Himself.||1||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
aisaa raam bhagat jan ho-ee.
A true devotee of God is such a person,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har gun gaa-ay milai mal Dho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
who by singing God’s praises washes off the dirt of vices and unites with God.||1||pause||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਧੋ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
ooNDho kaval sagal sansaarai.
In the entire world, heart of the people is turned away from God’s meditation.
ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕਵਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਲਟਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥
durmat agan jagat parjaarai.
The entire humanity is spiritually suffering in the fire of evil intellect.
ਇਸ ਭੈੜੀ ਕੋਝੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾੜ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥
so ubrai gur sabad beechaarai. ||2||
One who reflects on the Guru’s word is saved from this suffering. ||2||
(ਇਸ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥
bharing patang kunchar ar meenaa.
The bumble bee, the moth, the elephant, the fish
ਭੌਰਾ, ਪਤੰਗ, ਹਾਥੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੱਛੀ;
ਮਿਰਗੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
mirag marai seh apunaa keenaa.
and the deer suffer and die for their deeds done in greed and lusts.
ਹਰਨ-ਹਰੇਕ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨਾ ॥੩॥
tarisnaa raach tat nahee beenaa. ||3||
Similarly engrossed in the worldly desires people do not remember God and spiritually perish. ||3||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਸਲੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ) ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ॥੩॥
ਕਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥
kaam chitai kaaman hitkaaree.
A lover is always obsessed with the lust toward his beloved.
(ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਹੀ ਚਿਤਵਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
kroDh binaasai sagal vikaaree.
Anger spiritually destroys all who are engaged in evil pursuits.
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ (ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ) ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
pat mat khoveh naam visaaree. ||4||
One who forsakes Naam loses both intellect and honor.||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੪॥
