ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਾਧ ਮਗ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bayd puraan saaDh mag sun kar nimakh na har gun gaavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even after listening to Vedas, Puranas (holy scriptures) and the ways described by the saints, he does not sing God’s praises even for a moment.||1||Pause||
ਮਨ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ (ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਾਂਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਪਾਇ ਮਾਨਸ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਵੈ ॥
durlabh dayh paa-ay maanas kee birthaa janam siraavai.
Having obtained this human body so difficult to obtain, he is letting it pass uselessly.
ਬੜੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਭੀ) ਇਸ ਜਨਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮਹਾ ਸੰਕਟ ਬਨ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੁਚ ਉਪਜਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
maa-i-aa moh mahaa sankat ban taa si-o ruch upjaavai. ||1||
This world is filled with Maya to the brim yet he is in love with it. ||1||
ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ- ਜੰਗਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਲ ਨਕਾ-ਨਕ ਭਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਇਸ ਜੰਗਲ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
antar baahar sadaa sang parabh taa si-o nayhu na laavai.
He does not enshrine love for God, who is always nearby, within and without.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੬॥
naanak mukat taahi tum maanhu jih ghat raam samaavai. ||2||6||
O’ Nanak, consider only that person as liberated from the grip of Maya whose heart is filled with God.||2||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਤੁਸੀ ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੀ ਸਮਝੋ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥੬॥

Raag Gauree, Ninth Guru:
ਸਾਧੋ ਰਾਮ ਸਰਨਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਮਾ ॥
saaDho raam saran bisraamaa.
O’ the Saintly people, there is peace in the refuge of God.
ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਣ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਪੜੇ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਗੁਨ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bayd puraan parhay ko ih gun simray har ko naamaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The real advantage of reading (holy books, such as) Vedas and Puranas is that one starts meditating on God’s Name with fervor. ||1||Pause||
ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਦਾ ਇਹੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਅਉ ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
lobh moh maa-i-aa mamtaa fun a-o bikhi-an kee sayvaa.
Greed, love for Maya, emotional attachments, evil pursuits:
ਲੋਭ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ, ਅਪਣੱਤ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਨ,
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਪਰਸੈ ਜਿਹ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਸੋ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੧॥
harakh sog parsai jih naahan so moorat hai dayvaa. ||1||
anyone who is not influenced by these vices or by pleasure or pain is an embodiment of God. ||1||
ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ, ਗ਼ਮੀ-ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਛੁਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਿਖੁ ਏ ਸਭ ਤਿਉ ਕੰਚਨ ਅਰੁ ਪੈਸਾ ॥
surag narak amrit bikh ay sabh ti-o kanchan ar paisaa.
Heaven and hell, ambrosial nectar and poison, gold and copper, these are all alike to such a person.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰਗ ਅਤੇ ਨਰਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਨਾ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਂਬਾ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਏ ਸਮ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਤੈਸਾ ॥੨॥
ustat nindaa ay sam jaa kai lobh moh fun taisaa. ||2||
For this person, praise and slander are all the same, as are greed and attachment. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੇ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਭੀ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਭ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਏ ਬਾਧੇ ਜਿਹ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਤਿਹ ਤੁਮ ਜਾਨਉ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
dukh sukh ay baaDhay jih naahan tih tum jaan-o gi-aanee.
Consider that person divinely wise who is not bound by joy or sorrow.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਮਝੋ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਵਿਚ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਉ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੭॥
naanak mukat taahi tum maan-o ih biDh ko jo paraanee. ||3||7||
O’ Nanak, the person who adopts such a conduct in life, deem him liberated from worldly bonds and vices.||3||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਭ, ਮੋਹ, ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਮੰਨੋ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥੭॥

ga-orhee mehlaa 9.
Raag Gauree, Ninth Guru:
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਹਾ ਭਇਓ ਤੈ ਬਉਰਾ ॥
man ray kahaa bha-i-o tai ba-uraa.
O’ mind, why are you being insane?
ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿੱਥੇ (ਲੋਭ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਪਾਗਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅਉਧ ਘਟੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ਭਇਓ ਲੋਭ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahinis a-oDh ghatai nahee jaanai bha-i-o lobh sang ha-uraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One does not realize that his life-span is decreasing day and night and in the pursuit of greed he is experiencing spiritual decline. ||1||Pause||
ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਮਰ ਘਟਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜੋ ਤਨੁ ਤੈ ਅਪਨੋ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਅਰੁ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
jo tan tai apno kar maani-o ar sundar garih naaree.
Your body and your beautiful wife which you consider as your own,
ਜੇਹੜਾ (ਇਹ) ਸਰੀਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੰਨ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ,
ਇਨ ਮੈਂ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਰੇ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਦੇਖੋ ਸੋਚ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
in maiN kachh tayro ray naahan daykho soch bichaaree. ||1||
none of these is yours to keep forever; think it over carefully. ||1||
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ (ਸਦਾ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਥੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਸੋਚ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲੈ, ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲੈ ॥੧॥
ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਨੋ ਤੈ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
ratan janam apno tai haari-o gobind gat nahee jaanee.
You have lost your precious human life and have not understood the essence of the Master of the universe.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਹਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ।
ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਲੀਨ ਭਇਓ ਚਰਨਨ ਸਿਂਉ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਅਉਧ ਸਿਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
nimakh na leen bha-i-o charnan siN-o birthaa a-oDh siraanee. ||2||
Even for an instant, you have not attuned yourself to devotional worship of God and you have wasted your life. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦਾ, ਤੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਉਮਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੨॥
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਨਰੁ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
kaho naanak so-ee nar sukhee-aa raam naam gun gaavai.
Nanak says, that person dwells in peace who sings praises of God.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਉਰ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥੮॥
a-or sagal jag maa-i-aa mohi-aa nirbhai pad nahee paavai. ||3||8||
The rest of the world is deceived by the enticement of Maya and never attains the spiritual state where there is no fear. ||3||8||
ਬਾਕੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਹਾਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ, ਜਿਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਪੋਹਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੩॥੮॥

Raag Gauree, Ninth Guru:
ਨਰ ਅਚੇਤ ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਡਰੁ ਰੇ ॥
nar achayt paap tay dar ray.
O’ spiritually ignorant person, be afraid of sins.
ਹੇ ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਿਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਪਾਪਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹੁ l
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਗਲ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਪਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
deen da-i-aal sagal bhai bhanjan saran taahi tum par ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
To save yourself from the sins, seek the refuge of God who is merciful to the meek and dispeller of all fears. ||1||Pause||
ਪਾਪਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹੁ, ਜੋ ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਜਾਸ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੀਐ ਮੋ ਧਰੁ ਰੇ ॥
bayd puraan jaas gun gaavat taa ko naam hee-ai mo Dhar ray.
Enshrine God’s Name in your heart whose praise is sung (written) in the the holy books, such as the Vedas and Puranas.
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੋ ਰੱਖ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਵੇਦ-ਪੁਰਾਣ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਗਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਗਤਿ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਕਸਮਲ ਸਭ ਹਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
paavan naam jagat mai har ko simar simar kasmal sabh har ray. ||1||
Yes, all-purifying in the world is the Name of God; meditate on it and eradicate your sins. ||1||
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਾਨਸ ਦੇਹ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਕਛੂ ਉਪਾਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਾ ਕਰੁ ਰੇ ॥
maanas dayh bahur nah paavai kachhoo upaa-o mukat kaa kar ray.
You shall not receive this human life again; make some effort to achieve liberation!
ਤੂੰ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਫਿਰ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕੇਂਗਾ ਇਹੀ ਵੇਲਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਇਲਾਜ ਕਰ ਲੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਤ ਗਾਇ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਮੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰ ਕੈ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੯॥੨੫੧॥
naanak kahat gaa-ay karunaa mai bhav saagar kai paar utar ray. ||2||9||251|
Nanak says, O’ human being sing praises of that merciful God and swim across the dreadful worldly ocean. ||2||9||251||
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ-ਤਰਸ-ਰੂਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ॥੨॥੯॥੨੫੧॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satnaam kartaa purakh gur parsaad.
One eternal God, the Creative Being and is realized by the Guru’s Grace:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
niDh siDh nirmal naam beechaar.
Reflecting on immaculate Naam in itself is a treasure and miraculous power.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਰਿੱਧੀਆਂ) ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਹੈ।
ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
