ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਲਾਇ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
sani-aasee bibhoot laa-ay dayh savaaree.
The Sannyasi (hermit) decks his body by smearing it with ashes.
ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਨੇ ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਕਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰੀ ॥
par tari-a ti-aag karee barahamchaaree.
He practices celibacy, by abstaining from contact with all women.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਰਜ ਧਾਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
mai moorakh har aas tumaaree. ||2||
O’ God, I am ignorant and I have placed my hopes in You. ||2||
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ l
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਤਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
khatree karam karay soortan paavai.
The Kshatriya (warrior) acts bravely, and is recognized for his bravery.
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ (ਸੂਰਮਤਾ ਦੇ) ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਮਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮਣਾ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸੂਦੁ ਵੈਸੁ ਪਰ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
sood vais par kirat kamaavai.
The Shudras (serving class) and the Vaish (business class ) think that their salvation lies in serving others.
ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵੈਸ਼ ਭੀ (ਵਣਜ ਆਦਿਕ) ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
mai moorakh har naam chhadaavai. ||3||
I am ignorant but I firmly believe that it is the meditation on God’s Name, which would save me from the world ocean of vices. ||3||
ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
sabh tayree sarisat tooN aap rahi-aa samaa-ee.
O’ God, the entire Universe is Yours; You Yourself pervade in it.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਚੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
gurmukh naanak day vadi-aa-ee.
O Nanak, God blesses glory of His Name to the Guru’s Follower.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੯॥
mai anDhulay har tayk tikaa-ee. ||4||1||39||
I, the blind (ignorant), have reposed my support in You only. ||4||1||39||
ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ l

ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਥਾ ਕਥਾ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ॥
nirgun kathaa kathaa hai har kee.
The sublime words of God’s praises are way beyond the three traits of Maya.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਹਨ
ਭਜੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ॥
bhaj mil saaDhoo sangat jan kee.
Join the holy congregation and lovingly meditate on Naam.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਭਜਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਤਰੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ॥੧॥
tar bha-ojal akath kathaa sun har kee. ||1||
By listening to the praises of God, which cannot be described , swim across this dreadful worldly ocean of vices. ||1||
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਰ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਦੱਸੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ, ਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ l
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥
gobind satsangat maylaa-ay.
O’ God of the Universe, please unite me with the holy congregation,
ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ! (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼,
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har ras rasnaa raam gun gaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
so that I may enjoy the elixir of Naam by singing Your praises. ||1||Pause||
(ਤਾਂ ਜੁ ਮੇਰੀ) ਜੀਭ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ (ਲੈ ਕੇ) ਹਰਿ-ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੀ ਰਹੇ
ਜੋ ਜਨ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
jo jan Dhi-aavahi har har naamaa.
O’ God, the devotees who lovingly meditate on Naam,
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਤਿਨ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਮ ਰਾਮਾ ॥
tin daasan daas karahu ham raamaa.
make me the humble servant of those devotees
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਾ।
ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਊਤਮ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੨॥
jan kee sayvaa ootam kaamaa. ||2||
Serving Your devotees is the ultimate good deed. ||2||
ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
jo har kee har kathaa sunaavai.
One who recites to me the praises of God,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
so jan hamrai man chit bhaavai.
that devotee is very pleasing to me.
ਉਹ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਪਗ ਰੇਣੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
jan pag rayn vadbhaagee paavai. ||3||
It is only a very fortunate person who is blessed with the humble service of a true devotee. ||3||
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਭਗਤ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹੀ) ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥
sant janaa si-o pareet ban aa-ee.
Only they are imbued with the love of the saintly people,
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਿਭਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
jin ka-o likhat likhi-aa Dhur paa-ee.
who are blessed with such preordained destiny.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਧੁਰੋਂ (ਆਪਣੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਵੇ।
ਤੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੪੦॥
tay jan naanak naam samaa-ee. ||4||2||40||
O’ Nanak, only such devotees merge in God’s Name. ||4||2||40||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ, ਐਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨਤਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ l

ga-orhee gu-aarayree mehlaa 4.
Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Fourth Guru:
ਮਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਤੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
maataa pareet karay put khaa-ay.
Just as the mother loves to see her son eat delicious food .
ਹਰੇਕ ਮਾਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਨਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੀਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭਈ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
meenay pareet bha-ee jal naa-ay.
just as the fish loves and feels happy when it freely swims in water.
ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਮੱਛੀ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
satgur pareet gursikh mukh paa-ay. ||1||
Similarly the true Guru‘s happiness lies in delivering divine word to disciple. ||1||
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਭੋਜਨ ਪਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਹਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
tay har jan har maylhu ham pi-aaray.
O’ my beloved God, unite me with those devotees of Yours,
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਮਿਲਾ,
ਜਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jin mili-aa dukh jaahi hamaaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
meeting whom, all my sorrows may depart. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ l
ਜਿਉ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਛਰੇ ਗਊ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
ji-o mil bachhray ga-oo pareet lagaavai.
Just as the cow shows her love to her calf,
ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਵੱਛੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਗਾਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
kaaman pareet jaa pir ghar aavai.
and the bride shows her love for her husband when he returns home,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਤੀ ਘਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
har jan pareet jaa har jas gaavai. ||2||
similarly the devotee of God feels imbued with love and joy when he sings the praises of God. ||2||
(ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਤਦੋਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਸੈ ਜਲ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
saaring pareet basai jal Dhaaraa.
The most pleasing thing for a song bird is when rain falls like a stream from heaven.
ਪਪੀਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ (ਸ੍ਵਾਂਤੀ ਨਛੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਮੁਹਲੇ-ਧਾਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਰਪਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
narpat pareet maa-i-aa daykh pasaaraa.
The king loves to see his wealth on display.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਕਿਸੇ) ਰਾਜੇ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਪੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
har jan pareet japai nirankaaraa. ||3||
The humble devotee of God loves to meditate on the Formless God. ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਨਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟੇ ॥
nar paraanee pareet maa-i-aa Dhan khaatay.
Every human being loves to earn wealth and property.
ਹਰੇਕ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਧਨ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਾਟੇ ॥
gursikh pareet gur milai galaatay.
The GurSikh (disciple) loves to embrace the teachings of the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ (ਮਹਿਸੂਸ) ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਗਲ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਪਗ ਚਾਟੇ ॥੪॥੩॥੪੧॥
jan naanak pareet saaDh pag chaatay. ||4||3||41||
O’ Nanak, a God’s devotee loves to humbly serve the Holy. ||4||3||41||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਚੁੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ l

The beggar loves to receive alms from a kind person
ਮੰਗਤੇ ਨੂੰ (ਤਦੋਂ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ) ਮਾਲਕ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਭਿੱਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭੂਖੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
bhookhay pareet hovai ann khaa-ay.
The hungry person loves to eat food.
ਭੁੱਖੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਤਦੋਂ) ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ) ਅੰਨ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਘਾਇ ॥੧॥
gursikh pareet gur mil aaghaa-ay. ||1||
The disciple loves to meet the Guru and feel satiated towards Maya. ||1||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
har darsan dayh har aas tumaaree.
O’ God, please make me realize You in my heart; I pin all my hopes on You.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਹ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੋਚ ਪੂਰਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar kirpaa loch poor hamaaree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Please show Your Mercy, and fulfill my longing. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ, ਮੇਰੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰ l
ਚਕਵੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
chakvee pareet sooraj mukh laagai.
The song-bird loves to see the sun shining right in front of her face,
ਚਕਵੀ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੂਰਜ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤਿਆਗੈ ॥
milai pi-aaray sabh dukh ti-aagai.
because, upon meeting her beloved mate, she forgets her pang of separation.
ਸੂਰਜ ਚੜ੍ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ) ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਚਕਵੇ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਲਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੨॥

The Guru’s disciple loves to behold the sight of the Guru. ||2||
ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ
ਬਛਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਖੀਰੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਖਾਇ ॥
bachhray pareet kheer mukh khaa-ay.
The calf loves to suck its mother’s milk.
ਵੱਛਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੁੰਘਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
hirdai bigsai daykhai maa-ay.
Calf’s heart blossoms forth upon seeing its mother.
ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਖਿੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥

ਗੁਰਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ
ਹੋਰੁ ਸਭ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥
hor sabh pareet maa-i-aa moh kaachaa.
All other love and emotional attachments to Maya are false.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਹੋਰ ਮੋਹ ਕੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੂਰਾ ਕਚੁ ਪਾਚਾ ॥
binas jaa-ay kooraa kach paachaa.
They shall pass away, like false and transitory decorations.
ਹੋਰ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਝੂਠਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿਰਾ ਕੱਚ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥੪॥੪॥੪੨॥
jan naanak pareet taripat gur saachaa. ||4||4||42||
O’ Nanak, one who meets the true Guru becomes truly happy because of the satisfaction of meeting the Guru. ||4||4||42||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਣ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
