ਮਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
man nirmal vasai sach so-ay.
The mind is rendered immaculate, and one realizes the presence of God within,
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ (ਹੋਏ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚਿ ਵਸਿਐ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ॥
saach vasi-ai saachee sabh kaar.
When one realizes the presence of eternal God in the mind, one’s whole conduct becomes truthful.
ਜੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵਸੇ, ਤਾਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਨਿੱਤ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਊਤਮ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥
ootam karnee sabad beechaar. ||3||
Then he realizes that the most sublime deed is to reflect on the Guru’s word.|3|
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur tay saachee sayvaa ho-ay.
True devotional worship is obtained from the Guru.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
gurmukh naam pachhaanai ko-ay.
But a rare Guru’s follower realizes God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੀਵੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
jeevai daataa dayvanhaar.
He firmly believes that the Giver of all gifts lives forever.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਦਾਤਾਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਊਂਦਾ-ਜਾਗਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੨੧॥
naanak har naamay lagai pi-aar. ||4||1||21||
O’ Nanak, he is imbued with the love of God’s Name.||4||1||21||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Guru:
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
gur tay gi-aan paa-ay jan ko-ay.
Rare is the one who seeks divine wisdom from the Guru.
ਕੋਈ (ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੀਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
gur tay boojhai seejhai so-ay.
The one who acquires divine wisdom from the Guru succeeds spiritually in life.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ (ਇਹ ਰਾਜ਼) ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਖੇਡ ਵਿਚ) ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
gur tay sahj saach beechaar.
From the Guru, he intuitively receives understanding about the virtues of God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੧॥
gur tay paa-ay mukat du-aar. ||1||
From the Guru he learns the way to escape from the vices. ||1||
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਇ ॥
poorai bhaag milai gur aa-ay.
Through perfect good fortune, the one who meets the Guru,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saachai sahj saach samaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
intuitively merges in the eternal God. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
gur mili-ai tarisnaa agan bujhaa-ay.
Meeting the Guru, the fire of desire of Maya is quenched.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਖਾਹਿਸ਼ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥
gur tay saaNt vasai man aa-ay.
Through the Guru, tranquility comes to dwell within the mind.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur tay pavit paavan such ho-ay.
Spiritual purity and righteous conduct is received from the Guru.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁੱਚ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
gur tay sabad milaavaa ho-ay. ||2||
Union with God takes place through the Guru’s word. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
baajh guroo sabh bharam bhulaa-ee.
Without the Guru, everyone wanders in doubt.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
bin naavai bahutaa dukh paa-ee.
Without meditating on God’s Name, they suffer in terrible pain.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਲੁਕਾਈ) ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
gurmukh hovai so naam Dhi-aa-ee.
One who meditates on Naam by following the Guru’s teachings,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦਰਸਨਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
darsan sachai sachee pat ho-ee. ||3||
receives true honor of experiencing the presence of the eternal God ||3||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੱਚੀ ਇਜਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ
ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦਾਤਾ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
kis no kahee-ai daataa ik so-ee.
When God is the only Giver, then why ask anyone else?
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ?
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
kirpaa karay sabad milaavaa ho-ee.
He, on whom God bestows mercy, unites with Him through the Guru’s word.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਉਹ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥
mil pareetam saachay gun gaavaa.
By meeting my beloved Guru, I keep singing the praises of the eternal God,
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ (ਭੀ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੨੨॥
naanak saachay saach samaavaa. ||4||2||22||
and forever merge in the eternal God, prays Nanak. ||4||2||22||
ਨਾਨਕ (ਦੀ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਕਿ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਾਂ
ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
ga-orhee gu-aarayree mehlaa 3.
Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Guru:
ਸੁ ਥਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
so thaa-o sach man nirmal ho-ay.
That congregation is truly the right place where one’s mind becomes immaculate.
ਉਹ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਸੱਚਾ ਥਾਂ ਹੈ, ਜਿਥੇ ਬੈਠਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
sach nivaas karay sach so-ay.
There, one’s mind is attuned to the eternal God and by virtue of the holy congregation, he becomes the embodiment of the eternal God.
ਉਥੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਤਸੰਗ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
sachee banee jug chaaray jaapai.
By virtue of the divine word, one becomes known through all the ages.
ਸੱਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਚੌਹਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੈ ॥੧॥
sabh kichh saachaa aapay aapai. ||1||
He realizes that the eternal God is everything, all by Himself. ||1||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੱਚਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਕੁਝ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
karam hovai satsang milaa-ay.
Upon whom God bestows mercy, He unites that person with the holy congregation.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਬੈਸਿ ਸੁ ਥਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har gun gaavai bais so thaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Sitting in that company, such a person sings God’s praises.||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਲਉ ਇਹ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
jala-o ih jihvaa doojai bhaa-ay.
May this tongue burn, which is in love with worldly astes rather than God.
ਸੜ ਜਾਏ ਇਹ ਜੀਭ ਜੇ ਇਹ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਚਾਖੈ ਫੀਕਾ ਆਲਾਇ ॥
har ras na chaakhai feekaa aalaa-ay.
Such a tongue does not taste the elixir of God’s Name, and utters insipid words.
ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਖਦੀ, ਪਰ ਫਿੱਕੇ ਬੋਲ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin boojhay tan man feekaa ho-ay.
Without realizing God, one’s body and mind become insipid.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਫਿੱਕਾ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਚਲਿਆ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥
bin naavai dukhee-aa chali-aa ro-ay. ||2||
Without meditating on Naam, the miserable one departs bewailing. ||2||
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਇਥੋਂ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
rasnaa har ras chaakhi-aa sahj subhaa-ay.
One whose tongue has intuitively tasted the elixir of God’s Name,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਨੇ ਸੁਤੇਸਿਧ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
gur kirpaa tay sach samaa-ay.
by the Guru’s grace remains merged in the praises of God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
saachay raatee gur sabad veechaar.
The tongue which reflects on the Guru’s word and is imbued with the love for God,
ਜਬਾਨ ਜਿਹੜੀ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਚਦੀ-ਵਿਚਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਧਾਰ ॥੩॥
amrit peevai nirmal Dhaar. ||3||
it drinks from the immaculate stream of nectar of Naam. ||3||
ਉਹ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਧਾਰ ਛਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਜੋ ਭਾਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam samaavai jo bhaadaa ho-ay.
The heart which has become pure by the Guru’s grace remains attuned to Naam.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁੱਧ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਊਂਧੈ ਭਾਂਡੈ ਟਿਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
ooNDhai bhaaNdai tikai na ko-ay.
No virtue can enter in the heart which is turned away from God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਲਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
gur sabdee man naam nivaas.
Only through the Guru’s word, Naam dwells within the mind.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਸ ॥੪॥੩॥੨੩॥
naanak sach bhaaNdaa jis sabad pi-aas. ||4||3||23||
O Nanak, true is that mind which longs for the Guru’s word. ||4||3||23||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਅਸਲ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਲੱਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ
ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Guru:
ਇਕਿ ਗਾਵਤ ਰਹੇ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
ik gaavat rahay man saad na paa-ay.
Some keep singing devotional songs, but their minds do not find true delight.
ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
ha-umai vich gaavahi birthaa jaa-ay.
They sing out of ego, and all their effort goes waste.
ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਾਵਣਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
gaavan gaavahi jin naam pi-aar.
Only those sing songs of God’s praise who are in love with His Name,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
saachee banee sabad beechaar. ||1||
and reflect on the Guru’s divine word. ||1||
ਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਗਾਵਤ ਰਹੈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
gaavat rahai jay satgur bhaavai.
If it so pleases the true Guru, then one keeps singing God’s praises.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man tan raataa naam suhaavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The mind and body are then imbued with God’s Name, and his life becomes embellished ||1||Pause||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਇਕਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇਹਿ ॥
ik gaavahi ik bhagat karayhi.
There are some who sing and perform devotional worship.
ਕਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਐਸੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ) ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਸਾਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਸਨੇਹ ॥
naam na paavahi bin asnayh.
Without the true love for God, they are not blessed with Naam.
ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
sachee bhagat gur sabad pi-aar.
The worship of those devotees is true who are imbued with love for the Guru’s word,
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਅਪਨਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
apnaa pir raakhi-aa sadaa ur Dhaar. ||2||
and they have always kept their Master-God enshrined in their mind. ||2||
ਤੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ
