ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
man meh kroDh mahaa ahaNkaaraa.
If within the mind is anger and immense ego,
ਜੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਬਲੀ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹੇ,
ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
poojaa karahi bahut bisthaaraa.
then people may perform worship with great elaboration,
ਪਰ ਕਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਿਲਾਰੇ ਖਿਲਾਰ ਕੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇਵ) ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ,
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਤਨਿ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ॥
kar isnaan tan chakar banaa-ay.
and after taking bath they may make religious marks on the body,
ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉੱਤੇ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਚਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਲਾਏ ਜਾਣ,
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
antar kee mal kab hee na jaa-ay. ||1||
still the filth of evil instincts from their mind never departs. ||1||
(ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮਨ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਕਦੇ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ॥੧॥
ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
it sanjam parabh kin hee na paa-i-aa.
No one has ever realized God in this way,
ਇਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕਿਸੇ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਨੇ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ,
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhag-utee mudraa man mohi-aa maa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
that is by making ritualistic signs of the god Vishnu’s worship on the body, if the mind remains enticed by the love of Maya. ||1||Pause||
(ਜੇ) ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹੇ, (ਪਰ) ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂ-ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰਲੇ ਚਿਹਨ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਰਹੇ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੰਚਾਂ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
paap karahi panchaaN kay bas ray.
O’ brother, those who commit sins under the influence of the five impulses (lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego),
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਪਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਤਰੇ ॥
tirath naa-ay kaheh sabh utray.
after bathing at pilgrimage places, they claim that all their sins have vanished,
ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਸਾਡੇ) ਸਾਰੇ (ਪਾਪ) ਲਹਿ ਗਏ ਹਨ,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥
bahur kamaaveh ho-ay nisank.
and then without any hesitation start committing more sins again.
(ਤੇ) ਝਾਕਾ ਲਾਹ ਕੇ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ (ਉਹੀ ਪਾਪ) ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਾਲੰਕ ॥੨॥
jam pur baaNDh kharay kaalank. ||2||
Because of their sins, they are bound to be taken to the city of death (they face the fear of death). ||2||
ਕੀਤੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ ਵਿਚ ਅਪੜਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਘੂਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਬਜਾਵਹਿ ਤਾਲਾ ॥
ghooghar baaDh bajaaveh taalaa.
Those who tie ankle-bells, vibrate cymbals and dance to appease the deities,
(ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਕਿਸੇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਅੱਗੇ ਜਾਂ ਰਾਸਿ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਚ) ਤਾਲ ਵਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਾਲ-ਸਿਰ ਨੱਚਦੇ ਹਨ),
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
antar kapat fireh baytaalaa.
But within them is deception and are moving around astray from righteous life.
ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਠੱਗੀ-ਫ਼ਰੇਬ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-) ਤਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ॥
varmee maaree saap na moo-aa.
Just as a snake is not killed by destroying its hole, similarly evil instincts are not removed by performing rituals;
ਜੇ ਸੱਪ ਦੀ ਖੁੱਡ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਏ, (ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਖੁੱਡ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸੱਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ;
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥੩॥
parabh sabh kichh jaanai jin too kee-aa. ||3||
because God who created you, knows everything. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ) ਹਰੇਕ ਗੱਲ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਪੂੰਅਰ ਤਾਪ ਗੇਰੀ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥
pooNar taap gayree kay bastaraa.
One who sits before ritualistic fires and wears saffron colored robes,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧੂਣੀਆਂ ਤਪਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੇਰੀ-ਰੰਗੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾਈ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਸਤਾ ॥
apdaa kaa maari-aa garih tay nastaa.
is the one stung by misfortune and has abandoned his home,
(ਉਂਝ ਕਿਸੇ) ਬਿਪਤਾ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਘਰੋਂ ਭੱਜਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੇਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਹਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥
days chhod pardayseh Dhaa-i-aa.
abandoning his own country (Guru), and wanders to foreign lands (after those who pretend to be the religious guides),
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਤਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਦੇਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੰਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਨਾਲੇ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
panch chandaal naalay lai aa-i-aa. ||4||
is carrying five demons (lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego) with him. ||4||
(ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਪੰਜ ਚੰਡਾਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਲਈ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਾਨ ਫਰਾਇ ਹਿਰਾਏ ਟੂਕਾ ॥
kaan faraa-ay hiraa-ay tookaa.
One who gets his ears pierced (to become a yogi) and goes around looking for food,
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਨ ਪੜਵਾ ਕੇ (ਜੋਗੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਪੇਟ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਮਿਟਾਣ ਲਈ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਟੁੱਕਰ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ॥
ghar ghar maaNgai tariptaavan tay chookaa.
he goes begging from door to door and fails to be satiated.
ਹਰੇਕ ਘਰ (ਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ) ਤੇ (ਰੋਟੀ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਸਗੋਂ) ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਨਿਤਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਦ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
banitaa chhod bad nadar par naaree.
Deserting his own wife he glances at other women with evil intent,
(ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਵੱਲ ਭੈੜੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਵੇਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੀ ॥੫॥
vays na paa-ee-ai mahaa dukhi-aaree. ||5||
-he becomes extremely miserable because God is not realized by just wearing religious garbs. ||5||
(ਨਿਰੇ) ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਨਾਲ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਜਿੰਦ) ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਮੋਨੀ ॥
bolai naahee ho-ay baithaa monee.
One who does not speak and becomes a silent sage,
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ) ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲਦਾ, ਮੋਨਧਾਰੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਬੈਠ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਲਪ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ॥
antar kalap bhavaa-ee-ai jonee.
-his mind remains filled with the desires and is made to wander in reincarnation.
(ਉਸਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ (ਤਾਂ) ਕਾਮਨਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਕਈ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਭਟਕਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਹਤਾ ॥
ann tay rahtaa dukh dayhee sahtaa.
He endures bodily misery by abstaining from food.
(ਉਹ) ਅੰਨ (ਖਾਣ) ਤੋਂ ਪਰਹੇਜ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਰੀਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ (ਹੀ) ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਮਮਤਾ ॥੬॥
hukam na boojhai vi-aapi-aa mamtaa. ||6||
He doesn’t realize God’s will and remains afflicted with the love for Maya. ||6||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਮਮਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ (ਹੀ) ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥
bin satgur kinai na paa-ee param gatay.
No one has ever attained higher spiritual state without the true Guru’s teachings,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥
poochhahu sagal bayd simritay.
you may reflect on all the religious books like the Vedas and the Simritis,
ਬੇ-ਸ਼ੱਕ ਵੇਦ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥
manmukh karam karai ajaa-ee.
All the ritualistic deeds done by a self-willed person go waste,
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜਿਹੜੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ),
ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥
ji-o baaloo ghar tha-ur na thaa-ee. ||7||
just as the house of sand leaves no sign when destroyed. ||7||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰੇਤ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਹੀ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਏ ਗੋੁਬਿੰਦ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
jis no bha-ay gobind da-i-aalaa.
One on whom the merciful God has become gracious,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਇਆਵਾਨ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ ,
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਪਾਲਾ ॥
gur kaa bachan tin baaDhi-o paalaa.
-he has internalized the Guru’s divine word.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਪੱਲੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
kot maDhay ko-ee sant dikhaa-i-aa.
Only a rare such saintly person is seen out of millions,
(ਪਰ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ) ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਵੇਖਣ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
naanak tin kai sang taraa-i-aa. ||8||
and in their company, Nanak ferries people across the world-ocean of vices. ||8||
ਨਾਨਕ (ਤਾਂ) ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ (ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ) ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
jay hovai bhaag taa darsan paa-ee-ai.
If one has preordained destiny, only then the blessed vision of such saints is attained,
ਜੇ (ਮੱਥੇ ਦਾ) ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ (ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਦਾ) ਦਰਸਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਤਰਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥
aap tarai sabh kutamb taraa-ee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o doojaa. ||2||a
nd then that person crosses over and helps his entire family (spiritual associates) to cross over the world-ocean of voces. ||1|| second pause ||2||
(ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਆਪ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ॥੨॥

Raag Prabhati,Fifth Guru:
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਟੇ ॥
simrat naam kilbikh sabh kaatay.
All the sins (sinful thoughts) vanish by lovingly remembering God’s Name,
(ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਕਾਗਰ ਫਾਟੇ ॥
Dharam raa-ay kay kaagar faatay.
and the accounts of their deeds held by the Righteous Judge are torn up.
ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਦੇ ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਭੀ ਪਾਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
saaDhsangat mil har ras paa-i-aa.
By joining the congregation of saintly persons, one who has attained the relish of God’s Name,
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
paarbarahm rid maahi samaa-i-aa. ||1||
the supreme God is enshrined in that one’s heart. ||1||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਗਿਆ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam ramat har har sukh paa-i-aa. tayray daas charan sarnaa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, whoever has come to the refuge of Your devotees, has always enjoyed the inner peace by remembering Your Name with adoration. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ, ਉਸਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਣਿਆ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ
ਚੂਕਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੁ ॥
chookaa ga-on miti-aa anDhi-aar.
The wandering of the mind of that person came to an end and his darkness of spiritual ignorance vanished,
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇਸਮਝੀ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮਿਟ ਗਿਆ,
ਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gur dikhlaa-i-aa mukat du-aar.
whom the Guru revealed the path to liberation from vices.
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਣ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਦ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
har paraym bhagat man tan sad raataa.
His mind and body always remains imbued with God’s loving devotion.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਰ-ਭਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਨਾਇਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
parabhoo janaa-i-aa tab hee jaataa. ||2||
But one comes to know about it only when God has Himself made it known. ||2||
ਪਰ, ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਸੂਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ॥੨॥
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
ghat ghat antar ravi-aa so-ay.
God is pervading in each and every heart,
ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਸਭਨਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੀਜੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tis bin beejo naahee ko-ay.
and except God there is none other at all.
ਉਸ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਛੇਦੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮਾਂ ॥
bair biroDh chhayday bhai bharmaaN.
All enmities, oppositions, dreads, and doubts vanish from within that person,
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਵੈਰ-ਵਿਰੋਧ ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰ ਭਰਮ ਕੱਟੇ ਗਏ
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਆਤਮੈ ਕੀਨੇ ਧਰਮਾ ॥੩॥
parabh punn aatmai keenay Dharmaa. ||3||
on whom God, the immaculate soul, bestowed the sense of righteousness. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ ॥੩॥
ਮਹਾ ਤਰੰਗ ਤੇ ਕਾਂਢੈ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
mahaa tarang tay kaaNdhai laagaa.
That person escapes from the big waves of vices of the world-ocean and reach the other shore,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੀਆਂ) ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ (ਬਚ ਕੇ) ਕੰਢੇ ਆ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਟੂਟਾ ਗਾਂਢਾ ॥
janam janam kaa tootaa gaaNdhaa.
he reunites with God from whom he has been separated for many births,
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਹ ਫਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿਆ ॥ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥੪॥
jap tap sanjam naam samHaali-aa. apunai thaakur nadar nihaali-aa. ||4||
his Master-God saw him with gracious glance, he lovingly remembered God, instead of worship, penance and self-discipline. ||4||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜੇਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਮੰਗਲ ਸੂਖ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਤਿਥਾਈਂ ॥
mangal sookh kali-aan tithaa-eeN.
All kinds of joys, comforts, and pleasures are there,
ਉਸ ਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
