ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੧॥
raam naam tul a-or na upmaa jan naanak kirpaa kareejai. ||8||1||
O’ God, bestow glory on devotee Nanak and bless him with Your Name because nothing else can equal the glory of Naam. ||8||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ (ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼) ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦੀ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੈ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ॥੮॥੧॥

Raag Kalyan, Fourth Guru:
ਰਾਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸੁ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
raam gur paaras paras kareejai.
O’ God, the Guru is like the real philosopher’s stone, please bring me in touch with the Guru.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਗੁਰੂ (ਹੀ ਅਸਲ) ਪਾਰਸ ਹੈ, (ਮੇਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ) ਛੁਹ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਹ)।
ਹਮ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੀ ਮਨੂਰ ਅਤਿ ਫੀਕੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ham nirgunee manoor at feekay mil satgur paaras keejai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
We are unvirtuous like the rusted iron and are extremely unpleasant; bestow mercy that by meeting the Guru, we may become like him who is like a philosopher’s stone. ||1||Pause||
ਅਸੀਂ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਨ ਹਾਂ, ਸੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਲੋਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਬੜੇ ਰੁੱਖੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਾਂ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਾਰਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਈਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੁਰਗ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਸਭਿ ਬਾਂਛਹਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਆਸਾ ਆਸ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
surag mukat baikunth sabh baaNchheh nit aasaa aas kareejai.
All people long for heaven and salvation and always hope and pray for it,
ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ (ਹੀ) ਮੰਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ (ਸੁਰਗ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਦੀ ਹੀ) ਆਸ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਮਾਂਗਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
har darsan kay jan mukat na maaNgeh mil darsan taripat man Dheejai. ||1||
but devotees of God love the blessed vision of God, and do not ask for emancipation; their mind gets satiated only when they realize Him and experience His blessed vision. ||1||
ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਭਗਤ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦੇ। (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇ ਰਜੇਵੇਂ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ) ਮਨ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਲੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗ ਲਗੀਜੈ ॥
maa-i-aa moh sabal hai bhaaree moh kaalakh daag lageejai.
Even though the love for materialism is extremely powerful, it leaves black stain of the filth of vices within the mind of human beings.
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਮੋਹ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕਾਲਖ ਦੇ ਦਾਗ਼ ਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਜਿਉ ਮੁਰਗਾਈ ਪੰਕੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
mayray thaakur kay jan alipat hai muktay ji-o murgaa-ee pank na bheejai. ||2||
But the devotees of my Master-God remain completely detached and free of any vices just like the duck’s feathers do not get wet in the water. ||2||
ਪਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੁਰਗਾਈ ਦਾ ਖੰਭ (ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ) ਭਿੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੨॥
ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਵੇੜੀ ਕਿਵ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
chandan vaas bhu-i-angam vayrhee kiv milee-ai chandan leejai.
Just as a sandal wood tree is surrounded by serpents, how can one obtain the sandalwood? Similarly when the mind of a person is surrounded by vices then how can he enjoy the fragrance of union with God.
ਚੰਦਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਬੂ ਸੱਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਘਿਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਚੰਦਨ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਘਿਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੀ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ)।
ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਛੇਦਿ ਛੇਦਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
kaadh kharhag gur gi-aan karaaraa bikh chhayd chhayd ras peejai. ||3||
We can drink the elixir of Naam only by pulling out the sharp sword of Guru’s divine wisdom and cutting out the poisonous love for materialism. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਾ) ਗਿਆਨ ਤੇਜ਼ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਰ (ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਵੱਢ ਵੱਢ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਆਨਿ ਆਨਿ ਸਮਧਾ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਪਲੁ ਬੈਸੰਤਰ ਭਸਮ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
aan aan samDhaa baho keenee pal baisantar bhasam kareejai.
We may bring lot of wood and stack it in a pile, but a spark of fire can reduce it to ashes in an instant.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਲੱਕੜਾਂ ਲਿਆ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਬੜਾ ਢੇਰ ਇਕੱਠਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਏ, ਉਸ ਢੇਰ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਚੰਗਿਆੜੀ ਪਲ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਆਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਹਾ ਉਗ੍ਰ ਪਾਪ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਕੀਨੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਲੂਕੀ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
mahaa ugar paap saakat nar keenay mil saaDhoo lookee deejai. ||4||
Similarly the faithless cynics commit the most heinous sins, the spark of God’s Name can be used to burn these sins by following the Guru’s teachings. ||4||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੜੇ ਬੜੇ ਬੱਜਰ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ-ਅੱਗ ਦੀ) ਚੁਆਤੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥
saaDhoo saaDh saaDh jan neekay jin antar naam Dhareejai.
Pious are those saintly persons within whom is enshrined God’s Name.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਨ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਉਹ ਹਨ ਭਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ।
ਪਰਸਨਿ ਪਰਸੁ ਭਏ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ਦਿਖੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
paras nipras bha-ay saaDhoo jan jan har bhagvaan dikheejai. ||5||
They became saintly persons by coming in touch with God’s Name, as if they have visualized God everywhere. ||5||
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਛੁਹ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਾਧੂ-ਜਨ ਬਣੇ ਹਨ, (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਨੋ, (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਹਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਦਿੱਸ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਸਾਕਤ ਸੂਤੁ ਬਹੁ ਗੁਰਝੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਨੁ ਤਨੀਜੈ ॥
saakat soot baho gurjhee bhari-aa ki-o kar taan taneejai.
The life of a faithless cynic is extremely entangled in vices, how can it become fruitful? It is just like an entangled thread which can’t be woven successfully,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਡੋਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਗੁੰਝਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸੂਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਤਾਣਾ ਤਣਿਆ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਤੰਤੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
tant soot kichh niksai naahee saakat sang na keejai. ||6||
because not a single string can be taken out of the entangled mesh, therefore we should not associate with a faithless cynic. ||6||
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਗੁੰਝਲਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ, ਇੱਕ ਭੀ ਧਾਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ। (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ॥੬॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਨੀਕੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
satgur saaDhsangat hai neekee mil sangat raam raveejai.
Sublime is the holy congregation of the true Guru, and we can remember God with adoration by joining the holy congregation.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਭਲੀ (ਸੁਹਬਤ) ਹੈ, ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
antar ratan javayhar maanak gur kirpaa tay leejai. ||7||
God’s precious Name is present within the mind of the human beings, and it can be realized only through the Guru’s grace. ||7||
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਪਤ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ, ਮਾਨੋ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰਾਤ ਮੋਤੀ ਹਨ ਇਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਲਏ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੭॥
ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਵਡਾ ਵਡਾ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਮ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲਹ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥
mayraa thaakur vadaa vadaa hai su-aamee ham ki-o kar milah mileejai.
Great and magnificent is my Master-God, how can we realize Him on our own?
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਸੁਆਮੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ?
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak mayl milaa-ay gur pooraa jan ka-o pooran deejai. ||8||2||
O’ Nanak, the perfect Guru unites us with God by uniting with divine word; we should pray: O’ God, bless Your devotee with the supreme spiritual state.||8||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ) ਜੋੜ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਸੋ, ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਪਣੇ) ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ॥੮॥੨॥
ਕਲਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Raag Kalyan, Fourth Guru:
ਰਾਮਾ ਰਮ ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
raamaa ram raamo raam raveejai.
We should always remember the all-pervading God with passion and love.
ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਰਾਮ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saaDhoo saaDh saaDh jan neekay mil saaDhoo har rang keejai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Ordinary people become saints by always remembering God, we should enjoy God’s love by joining the holy company. ||1||Pause||
(ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਾਧ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹੈ ਜੇਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਤ ਡੋਲ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
jee-a jant sabh jag hai jaytaa man dolat dol kareejai.
The minds of the human beings in this entire world waver unsteadily (under the effect of materialism).
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਇਹ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਭੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅਸਰ ਹੇਠ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਡਾਵਾਂ-ਡੋਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲਾਵਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਥੰਮਨ ਕਉ ਥੰਮੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
kirpaa kirpaa kar saaDh milaavhu jag thamman ka-o thamm deejai. ||1||
O’ God, bestow mercy and unite people with the Guru who provides support to the world like a supporting column. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ, (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ (ਗੁਰੂ ਜਗਤ ਲਈ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ ਹੈ), ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਦੇਣ ਲਈ (ਇਹ) ਥੰਮ੍ਹ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਤਲੈ ਤਲੈ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਨ ਰੁਲੀਜੈ ॥
basuDhaa talai talai sabh oopar mil saaDhoo charan ruleejai.
The earth remains under the feet of all, and it comes above after death, therefore one should become humble by meeting and following the Guru’s teachings.
ਧਰਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਖ਼ਰ) ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ
ਅਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਅਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਸਭ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਚਰਨ ਤਲ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
at ootam at ootam hovhu sabh sisat charan tal deejai. ||2||
(By doing so) your life would become spiritually sublime and you will win over the entire universe as if it has come under your feet. ||2||
(ਜੇ ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰੋਗੇ ਤਾਂ) ਬੜੇ ਹੀ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੋਗੇ (ਨਿਮ੍ਰਤਾ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਸਿਵ ਨੀਕੀ ਆਨਿ ਪਾਨੀ ਸਕਤਿ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥
gurmukh jot bhalee siv neekee aan paanee sakat bhareejai.
By following the Guru’s teachings, when one is enlightened with the sublime Divine light, then the Maya starts serving him.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਲੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜੋਤਿ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ (ਭੀ ਉਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਟਹਲਣ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਮੈਨਦੰਤ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਸਾਰੁ ਚਬਿ ਚਬਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
maindant niksay gur bachnee saar chab chab har ras peejai. ||3||
By following the Guru’s words, he becomes so kind hearted as if he has teeth of wax; then he can so control his evil passions, as if he can chew steel and drink the sublime elixir of God’s Name. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਅਜਿਹੀ) ਕੋਮਲਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਬਲੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥
raam naam anoograhu baho kee-aa gur saaDhoo purakh mileejai.
One should follow the Guru’s teachings because the Guru bestows the great benefaction of God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਦਾਨ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਸਥੀਰਨ ਕੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਜਸੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
gun raam naam bistheeran kee-ay har sagal bhavan jas deejai. ||4||
The Guru spreads God’s Name and His virtues throughout the world, and in this way the Guru is spreading God’s praises in all the worlds. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਖਿਲਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੰਡੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਾਧੂ ਸਾਧ ਸਾਧ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਜੈ ॥
saaDhoo saaDh saaDh man pareetam bin daykhay reh na sakeejai.
The beloved God resides within the minds of the saintly devotees and they cannot spiritually survive without visualizing Him;
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਸਦਾ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਰਿਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ;
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮੀਨ ਜਲੰ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਫੂਟਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
ji-o jal meen jalaN jal pareet hai khin jal bin foot mareejai. ||5||
just as a fish living in water loves only the water and without it, it agonizes and dies instantly. ||5||
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਮੱਛੀ ਦਾ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ, ਪਾਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਤੜਪ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
